Summary[edit]

Description
English: Potassium chlorate and gummy bear

- A gummy bear is dropped into a test tube containing molten potassium chlorate. The gummy bear is rapidly consumed giving off a lot of smoke. The potassium chlorate first melts (an endothermic process), and then the molten potassium chlorate decomposes liberating oxygen (an endothermic reaction). The sugar present in the gummy bear undergoes rapid oxidation (exothermic reaction).

KClO3(s) → KClO3(l) 4KClO3 → KCl + 3KClO4 KClO4 → KCl + 2O2 C12H22O11(s) + 12O2(g) → 12CO2(g) + 11H2O(g)

Planned and performed by Marina Stojanovska, Miha Bukleski and Vladimir Petruševski, Department of Chemistry, FNSM, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, Macedonia.

KClO3(s) → KClO3(l) 4KClO3 → KCl + 3KClO4 KClO4 → KCl + 2O2 C12H22O11(s) + 12O2(g) → 12CO2(g) + 11H2O(g)
