Summary[edit]

Description

English: Small piece of potassium metal is added in a test tube filled with water. The test tube is placed in a jar with water for safety reasons. When the metal touches the water a reaction far more vigorous then the one with lithium or sodium, can be observed.

2K(s) + 2H2O(l) = 2KOH(aq) + H2(g)

When few drops of phenolphthalein are added to the reaction mixture, the color of the solution becomes raspberry red. This is an indication that a compound with basic properties (potassium hydroxide, KOH) has been formed.

Planned and performed by Marina Stojanovska, Miha Bukleski and Vladimir Petruševski, Department of Chemistry, FNSM, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, Macedonia.
