Title |
2009 T615 Post Medieval seal matrix |
||
Description |
English: British Museum Report on post-medieval silver seal matrix from 'Tendring District', Essex, 2009 T615.
Fragmentary silver fob seal, integral suspension loop broken, fluted baluster handle, applied separate oval disc engraved as seal matrix with figure of a putto in front of a beehive complete with flying bees, edging worn. The interpretation of the scene is unclear; perhaps the putto has stolen honey from the hive or has been stung by the bees. Some kind of allegorical or moral reading is intended and the engraved design resembles that of British prints of the later 17th and early 18th Century and of tomb monument designs. |
