Summary[edit]

Description
English: Nitrous oxide is an oxidation agent and as a result, metals can also burn in an N2O atmosphere. Glowing steel wool placed in a tube filled with N2O ignites and burns with sparks and intense light. During this reaction, iron oxide is formed, and the equation that describes this process can be shown as:
N2O(g) + Fe(s) = FeO(s) + N2(g)

After the completion of the reaction, at the bottom of the combustion chamber, a dark-colored substance can be noticed. This substance is the product of the combustion of Fe in an N2O atmosphere, i.e. FeO.

The experiment was performed by Prof. PhD Miha Bukleski. The planning of the experiment also included the Prof. Emeritus PhD Vladimir Petruševski, Prof. PhD Marina Stojanovska and the student Mihail Trajkov, Department of Chemistry, FNSM, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, Macedonia.
