현재 남아있는 『석보상절』초간본은 권 6,9,13,19,20,21,23,24등 8책이며 국립중앙도서관에 보물 523-1호『석보상절 제6,9,13,19』4책이 소장되어 있다.

『석보상절』은 조선 세종29년(1447)에 수양대군이 세종의 명을 받들어 어머니 소헌왕후 심씨의 명복을 빌기 위하여 간행한 책으로 『석보(釋譜)』는 석가의 일대기를, 『상절(詳節)』은 중요한 것은 상세히, 중요하지 않은 것은 생략한다는 뜻이다. 이 책은 남은 초간본 중 제19권이다.
