Description
Förgyllningsexperter fanns bland annat i London.
English: Pair of porcelain vases decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, with gilding added in Europe. Qing dynasty, c.1770-80. The vases are decorated with a common export scene, that became so well liked by clients in Europe that in 1780 a pattern was engraved by Thomas Minton, versions of which have been produced by English factories to this day. Known as the “Willow Pattern”, it was accompanied by a complicated love story. This clever marketing tool was encouraged by speculation that the legend came from China more than a thousand years ago, carried from the East by Crusaders. Another jumbled version of history relates how the scene contained pictorial elements that defied incoming Manchu rulers at the beginning of the Qing dynasty. Its origins were more prosaic, for Chinese landscape painting had depicted mountain scenes with water, pavilions, boats, flying birds and small figures, for more than a thousand years. They formed part of the standard repertoire for every jobbing painter, and were designs familiar to decorators at Jingdezhen. Chinese gilding was considered inferior because it rubbed off with use, so pieces were gilded upon arrival in Europe. London, for example, had expert gilders.
