Title
"Victorian Better Farming Train" Interior of train, Baby Welfare section - Mothercraft Carriage. Copied for the Agricultural Department
Description
These trains were painted yellow so that they were distinctive in appearance ("The Coach and Motor Builder, 1924, page 207). "The triumph of this exclusive conception of woman hood in rural areas (woman as housewife/ dependent and husband as the breadwinner) - and the manner of its transmission - is suggested in the report of the activities of the Better Farming Train, which took the news of scientific farming from the experts in the city to the farmers in the Mallee. In 1926, the most popular part of the train was reported to be the 'women's section' especially the 'mothercraft.' "The mothercraft car was packed with mothers who had come to learn" reported the Herald. (M. Lake in Grimshaw, McConville and McEwen's (Eds) "Families in Colonial Australia" 1985 page 184)
