Summary

[edit]
Author
Admiral Sir Edward Gennys Fanshawe
Description
English: 'Jungfrau from Interlaken, 1877' [Switzerland]

No. 36 in Fanshawe's Baltic and later album, 1843 - 83. Captioned by the artist on the album page below the image, as title. Interlaken, Switzerland, between Lakes Thun and Brienz, has a long history as a summer visitor resort, well before mountaineering and skiing became general pastimes. To the south lies the impressive range comprising the Eiger (3970 m), Monch (4107 m) and Jungfrau (4158 m) to which Interlaken is the nearest large town, and with good views of them. This is presumably a drawing done on holiday when Fanshawe was Admiral President of the Royal Naval College at Greenwich, 1875 -78.
