English: 'Fortress of Monjuich [Montjuïc], Barcelona, July 30th 1857' [Spain] No. 19 in Fanshawe's Baltic and later album, 1843 - 83. Captioned by the artist on the album page below the image, as title. The seventh of a series of drawings of the Mediterranean fleet's summer cruise, from Malta and back, between 3 June and 7 November 1857. The 600-foot eminence of Montjuïc, with its mid-18th-century castle, lies just south-west of Barcelona, in which it has long been incorporated. The fortress has an unenviable reputation, almost from the beginning, as a place where political prisoners were held (and tortured) into the mid-20th-century, when some of the worst excesses occurred in the Spanish Civil War and subsequently under Franco. It is now a military museum, with the adjacent botanical gardens and spectacular views making Montjuïc a place to visit. Fanshawe's view from seaward shows the Mole and entrance to the harbour on the right. The fleet touched at Barcelona en route from Toulon and Malaga to Gibraltar. |
