English: 'Florence from hotel window on the Lung' Arno, July 1st 1857' [Italy] No. 17 in Fanshawe's Baltic and later album, 1843 - 83. Captioned by the artist on the album page below the image, as title. The fifth of a series of drawings of Lord Lyons's Mediterranean fleet summer cruise, from Malta and back, between 3 June and 7 November 1857. It appears to include the Ponte Vecchio in the extreme left distance, suggesting it may be taken from the north side of the river Arno looking south-east towards the Boboli Gardens. Fanshawe, commanding the 'Centurion', wrote to has father from off Leghorn on 27 June: 'We arrived here last night, and the Admiral & Co. are going to Florence today [by train], to stay till Wednesday. I am part of the Co; and hope we shall have three pleasant days there. We go to Spezia Wednesday evening or Thursday, and stay till Saturday, ... to pick up the second detachment of officers on leave at Florence and till the ships have watered...' (Fanshawe [1904], p.351). |
