Description |
English: 'A surprise'. Original illustration to Marryat's 'Poor Jack' (1840)Jack (Tom Saunders) is told a story by his Greenwich Pensioner father (see PAF6067) in which a press-gang board a merchantman. One of the crew, hiding in the hold, is collared there in the dark. When brought on deck he finds he has been impressed by his own brother: 'Archy collars him and takes him on deck, when who should it prove to be but his own brother Andrew! "Oh Archy, Archy! I didn't think this of you." " Well, Andrew, I didn't know it was you, but there's no help for it; you must come and serve in the main top along with me..." '.
Wood-engraved by Henry Vizetelly, this appeared facing p. 222 in Chapter XXX1 of Marryat's 'Poor Jack' (1840). It is one of a group of five such drawings for the novel bequeathed to the Museum in 1953, and was cat. no. 236 in the Stanfield exhibition held at Sunderland and Bonn in 1979. For further details see PAF6068. |
