Summary[edit]
Author |
Lt James Henry Butt |
Description |
English: '"Waka Miya" Temple at Nagasaki' [Japan] No. 17 of 51 (PAJ2051 - PAJ2101): inscribed by the artist on the album page, as title, and dated '6/68'. View of the entrance to a Shinto shrine, with the distinctive 'torii' gateway structures that characteristically distinguish them, though they also appear on Buddhist temple sites, and symbolically mark the boundary between the realms of the sacred and the profane. The Wakamiya or Wakamiya Inari shrine is in the Irabayashi district of Nagasaki. It is known for its 250-year-old October festival called Tangenkei, for which see PAJ2086, Butt's drawing of its outer entrance. |
