Couple ideas:

How about changing special:contributions column to toolserver/Gallery.php? or maybe both.
Should there be some marking for users with problems? For cases you see user has problems and you cant help, so you mark it to list and someone else can check it? Or maybe just skip them.

1. Yes, I always read welcome messages, and I was struck by how professional, neat, colourful and helpful the welcome box looked.
2. The welcome box was extremely useful. It gave lots of links to helpful places, making me feel a lot more welcome.
3. I think it would be useful if the box included the standard signature stamp at the end, like the bot's version of ~~~~.

One of the important things that sould be in the welcome messege, is "Please write your native language and your level of English, since it's mostly important" (or something like that). Seems that some users just don't know English, and by talking with them in their native tounge, many misunderstangings could be prevented. I've also noticed that Commons:Babel is translated to various languages, but I haven't found an Hebrew translation...

1. Not always because I've already red the welcome messages on fr:WP. I'm shy because they are not the same !
2. Yes, I've learned about specific commons procedures like badname...
3. Nothing special. Think that if you add or change something in the welcome message all those who have already red it won't read it again : the edit should be really visible.
Maybe to prevent omission the upload tool should not work without having choosen a license. In the case where the license is generated by a special template (like {{PD-GallicaPic|xxxxxxx}} ) an option could be given like Automatically generated license. 1.It is true that I didnt read all, but I read part of them. And I like to receive the messages. On other side, in this moment a empty talk page means clear for all "this user is troublefree, goof. On other side it can give us a new information now "this user is activ here".

3.I think, it is very improtant to inform all users, that we need many files that are not so easy to get.

I take note of a good idea on Hungarian Wikipedia . If you make a new account there, you will see a welcome site automatically /without receiving the message/. But it find it very usefull to use both possibilities.

Also you should have a place in the template for the signature (the bot would use the current version, but with the user=~~~~ parameter, there could be an extra line saying if you need help, or feel lost you can always contact me. --Bdamokos 21:14, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

2. Yes, I found it very useful. But, telling the truth, I was a bit disappointed. I hoped it would be another warm welcome from a dear user (like on the other wikis), but this time only a bot... IMHO user generated welcomes would a little bit more encourage people.
3. It is almost perfect in its current form, but I think it should be translated to the remaining 5 languages ASAP.

Maybe it answers the third question... in fr.wikipedia and fr.wikiquote, welcome messages are posted and signed by sysop... no matter if they use a bot or not... This is beter because

- 1. this is warmer
- 2. This give more weight (is it a frenchism ??) to the welcome message
- 3. It is a way to have a model as a user and someone to talk to ...

1. I rarely log into commons unless I'm uploading a picture. My user page points to my user page on the english wikipedia. It's a fluke that I even saw the welcome message.
2. The only thing that I found in the welcome box that I wasn't already aware of was the info about babel and graphics ability as it relates to commons.
3. Information on how commons categories are organised when compared to wikipedia would be helpful. Many don't even vaguely align and it can be difficult to categorise photos.
This is a joke, right? I get a new user message over 4 months after my first upload! I've put about 28 photos on commons over that time. --Athol Mullen 03:54, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

3 ter: a technicality: the banner You have new messages did not appear at my latest login, even if the welcome-bot modified the talk page. It could be guessed that some users will notice they have been welcome only later on.

1. Oh yes, I read the welcome message (in fact, I have a habit of reading everything in writing presented to me ... ;-) )

There are indeed some useful hints although I already had some experience from Wikipedia (where I have been around since 2003) and from Commons, too (because I have been uploading image files since summer 2005 and was indeed quite astonished to find a welcome message now in February 2007 - in fact, I did not even notice it immediately but came upon it by chance!).
3. I think the most important hints for newbies are the links leading to helpful pages such as First steps help file, FAQs, How to upload files and Helpdesk. --wg 21:13, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
