Bug

Hello.

Actually, when I want to connect on V2C, there is this message :

Hello, recently i view that Video2commons does not work correctly, when i try to import a audio o video file from a external site to commons, it leaves the following error:

Unable to extract video data II: The Revenge

Hey there, as this was a topic back in November 2019, and had a ticket on phabricator (phab:T236446), i'm only coming here to say that the error messsage "An exception occurred: DownloadError: ERROR: tsnTyEq-Pfs: YouTube said: Unable to extract video data" is appearing everytime i try to send a YouTube video, and has been this way for the last couple of days. • V2c needs to update pywikibot from 5 to 6.
  • Uploads of more than ~50MB do not work for some time now (everywhere)
  • 4GiB is a hard limit for file size
  • V2c still does not save metadata
  • MW does still not display MetaData at file description pages
  • MW does still not include MetaData in transcoded videos.

unable to download video data

Hi, I don't know if it is related to errors mentioned above, but I get An exception occurred: DownloadError: b'ERROR: unable to download video data: HTTP Error 403: Forbidden with Rojulu Marayi Telugu Full Movie, already mentioned earlier. Yann (talk) 12:08, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

@Yann Hard to track this one down. I can find the error in the logs, but manually downloading the file with youtube-dl on the same server works, even using the same cache directory as v2c is using. In attempt to make it a little more robust, since there are several reports of local youtube-dl cache causing similar issues I'm setting v2c to retry on these errors without using a local cache. Let's see if that solves it or at least provides more info into the issue. Chico Venancio (talk) 18:15, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

titleblacklist-custom-filename indicates it is matching against MediaWiki:Titleblacklist. On the logs I see the filename as "Seymour Kneitel - Noveltoons - The Stupidstitious Cat (1947) (restored raw HD version).webm.webm". The likely culprit there is the duplicated extension. Can you make sure the extension is not duplicated when you send the task? Chico Venancio (talk) 20:48, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
Never mind. I got it happening the filename had duplicated extension; I removed it and tried again.

429 error and unfriendly messages

Trying to upload a video, I got the error:

Error: An exception occurred: DownloadError: ERROR: Unable to download webpage: HTTP Error 429: Too Many Requests (caused by HTTPError()); please report this issue on https://yt-dl.org/bug . Make sure you are using the latest version; see https://yt-dl.org/update on how to update. Be sure to call youtube-dl with the --verbose flag and include its complete output.

which is far from user-friendly.

https://yt-dl.org/bug redirects to https://github.com/ytdl-org/youtube-dl/issues - a page which is returning a 404 error.

I checked the WaybackMachne for that page, and was taken to a version with a prominent link which said:

READ THIS BEFORE OPENING ANOTHER YOUTUBE 429 ISSUE

I followed that link, and found the message:

Any attempt to open Youtube 429 issue ignoring instructions above will be considered spam with corresponding consequences.

There are no "instructions above".

Given that we direct people to use Video2commons using Commons' voice, I don't consider that this threat (nor the whole time-wasting chain ending in a 404 error) is an acceptable way to respond to those who encounter an unexpected (at least; by them) error massage and are making good-faith attempts to comply with the guidance given in that message.

How can it be improved? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 09:31, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

I agree with Andy. @Zhuyifei1999: I used the tool yesterday 6 times (workedwell!), so my youtube-dl worked (and it's today's version); it refused to work today c. 30 times since 3am - the problem is with the tool (or a server jam?), not the software on my computer. Yet, in order to inform GitHub of the error, I needed to copy and paste the inner workings of my laptop (including the small intestines), before anyone helps. And as Andy says, it's not at all friendly when an error occurs. In 2017 (above) you mentioned that mass upload was possible; I have >120 videos to upload 2 Commons. Anything I can do to help? Llywelyn2000 (talk) 15:11, 17 November 2020 (UTC)

429 error

Lots of people are reporting the 429 error and have been since 2019. I read the past discussion and I think here is the story -

  • The error comes when transferring videos from Google's YouTube to Wikimedia Commons, not from non-Google services like Vimeo
  • If you get the error try again some hours or days later, many people report that it works sometimes
  • the problem is at Google. They only allow a certain number of video transfers per hour or day
  • Google will not tell us how many videos they allow, and also they change the number they allow often, so it is unpredictable
  • Google lawyers / policymakers will not talk with any Wikimedia lawyers / policymakers to negotiate allowing the video transfers, so Wiki people just have to accept whatever Google offers
  • Despite what the error message says, it is totally incomprehensible, there is no documentation or help to read, and there is no place to submit a report except here on wiki
  • If you submit a report on wiki then maybe someday it will get to Wikimedia lawyers / policymakers, and maybe someday Google lawyers / policymakers will grant them a meeting to request wiki video transfer allowance, but probably not
  • My own advice: in 2028 the mp4 file format comes off patent, and then we can upload to Wikimedia Commons easily. Just wait till 2028
  • alternatively consult Category:Astrology for aids in choosing the right time to submit the URL

  • Any specific workflow recommendations (sites/plug-ins), if this is likely to persist for the near future? czar 23:42, 16 December 2019 (UTC)
It's likely to persist for the near future. YouTube thinks our use is against ToS, I responded to their email last Wednesday and have not received a response from them, so the IP blacklisting of Wikimedia Cloud Services is at the moment staying. Same origin policy on browsers also prohibits us from using the client's browser to fetch the video with the client's IP address. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 01:24, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
In the longer term of another few weeks / months, if YouTube still won't respond, I'll actually think about using slimer. It will be massive code to get that to work. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 01:27, 17 December 2019 (UTC)

This is absolutely outrageous! Since day 1 the Internet and the world of streaming has been filled with legal complications that quite frankly shouldn't exist. In the meantime...

Since we do not know if/when v2c will be operational again, does anyone have recommendations on other software for converting video to webm or ogv? I'm using avidemux at the moment, but I'm dissatisfied with the results. Huntster (t @ c) 07:05, 5 November 2021 (UTC)

The only reason to upload ogv would be, if the original is in ogv and therefore does not need to be transcoded for upload. Even the worst webm codec (VP8) ist better than ogv. MW transcodes all videos to webm and delivers only webm to readers. A good choice for converting is ffmpeg (command line), because ffmpeg outputs extensive information about the converrting process. Most FOSS video software uses ffmpeg as its core. C.Suthorn (talk) 13:12, 5 November 2021 (UTC)

Youtube subtitle not imported

i just uploaded File:President Trump Participates in a Bilateral Breakfast with the Secretary General of NATO.webm. i'm pretty sure i selected subtitles, and the video has an english sub, but it's not imported. why?--RZuo (talk) 14:20, 13 March 2022 (UTC)

It's unclear from the description whether subtitles are imported or not (it says they are "removed"; does this mean, deleted, or copied across?) but it seems obvious that subtitles should be imported. Some advice from the devs would be appreciated. --JimKillock (talk) 21:53, 30 March 2022 (UTC)
Subtitles can be part of mp4 and webm files, but wikipedia (commons) does it another way: subtitles are seperate files in srt format. I don't know, if v2c is supposed to create srt files for imported videos, but that would be the way. --C.Suthorn (talk) 06:04, 31 March 2022 (UTC)
@JimKillock: what "says they are "removed""? RZuo (talk) 08:37, 31 March 2022 (UTC)
@RZuo: The intro to this page says "video2commons is a tool to upload videos from a url to Wikimedia Commons, it automatically converts the video to a Commons compatible format. It includes functions such as removing audio, subtitles, video" --JimKillock (talk) 11:39, 31 March 2022 (UTC)
@C.Suthorn: v2c imported subs. a most recent example i could find is TimedText:Welcome_to_the_Very_Large_Array.webm.en.srt. RZuo (talk) 08:37, 31 March 2022 (UTC)
@RZuo: When I created these files imported from Youtube:
the subtitle files (en, la) were not picked up, and I added them manually afterwards; I'm not sure if I should have added an option for this, or something, or whether it was an error. I haven't found any instructions about subtitle import options, or if these need to be applied. --JimKillock (talk) 11:42, 31 March 2022 (UTC)
every time you import something there're 3 options. it used to be that choosing the import sub option would import all subtitles present in the youtube video (youtube auto-detect subs are not imported).
something is broken i guess. RZuo (talk) 09:02, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
@RZuo: Thanks very much, I did not spot those options at all, and will report back if they work or have disappeared for me. --JimKillock (talk) 17:32, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

Spam blacklist

I got the following error: "Error: b'Your file description matches spam blacklist! Matches: bit.ly/2MpRb0F' "

When I follow that bit.ly link, I get a Department of Conservation (NZ) page. Why would that possibly be on a spam blacklist? Michal, do you have the ability to take this off this blacklist? The video url in question is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUJSevYvEts Schwede66 09:40, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

The link triggers the spam filter of Commons. v2c can do nothing about it. But you can request that the link is removed from Commons list of forbidden links. --C.Suthorn (talk) 09:53, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
@Schwede66: Do you have the ability to change that bit.ly redirect to the target link? bit.ly is blacklisted here, and will probably remain so.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:17, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
Bitly is only shown in the error message. I’m using the full YouTube URL as shown above. Schwede66 15:49, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
Edit the file descritpion at the Youtube site to replace the bitly-url with the expanded url. Otherwise dwonload the video with youtube-dl and use any upload tool to upload to commons with an adapted file description. --C.Suthorn (talk) 16:02, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

Not importing subtitles from youtube

This has come up previously and a discussion item is in Archive1; it had previously been successfully resolved. I recently imported a bunch of videos from the Department of Conservation (New Zealand) and they all have subtitles. None of those were imported. Which is a shame for two reasons:

  • Some people struggle to understand the Kiwi accent
  • Some of those videos have passages in Māori

One of the videos, File:Paparoa Track, New Zealand.webm, is scheduled to be on the Main Page on 25 July. I've done the subtitles manually (by downloading the subtitles from YouTube, editing them to achieve the right format, and uploading them) but it would obviously be preferable if this functionality got fixed. Would anybody have any ideas what it is that needs mending? Schwede66 05:43, 21 July 2022 (UTC)

The format of youtube may have changed, or something in v2c may have broken. In either case it needs to be fixed by the maintainer. It seems the maintainer has not been doing anything at WM since he particapted in an argument and was unhappy with the outcome. If no one else becomes a maintainer of v2c and nothing happens that calms the current maintainers mood, it is unlikely that anything gets fixed on v2c. --C.Suthorn (talk) 07:35, 21 July 2022 (UTC)
Oh. That's a shame. I have already commented in a thread above; v2c is an amazing tool. Much gratitude to whoever came up with it. Schwede66 10:10, 21 July 2022 (UTC)
@Schwede66: As a workaround, you could try either: (a) import from YT and publish to a Peertube instance, (maybe Sharetube qwhich invites this kind of CC republication?) which should bring across the subtitles so they are at least easy to get hold of; or (b) use the command line tools YTDL / and its more maintained fork YTDLP. Video2commons and Peertube both use these same tools to download YT videos for conversion and import. You can use the cmd line tool to download the subtitles onto your device. I'm going to try these methods for the same reason as you (I need to import videos with subs). --JimKillock (talk) 10:47, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
I’ve already solved my problem manually: downloaded subtitles manually and then figured out how they are handled by Commons. Works fine. Just a tad annoying that it’s manual. Schwede66 11:12, 7 August 2022 (UTC)

Should I report this and if so how can I get the detailed error message please? Or is this software no longer maintained? Chidgk1 (talk) 07:31, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

Can you provide more info? Uploads of more than 600MB (the transcoded webm, not the original mp4) will often fail, >900 will fail nearly always. It looks like the uploading of a chunk fails. That is not the fault of v2c, but mediawiki. --C.Suthorn (talk) 10:55, 1 March 2022 (UTC)
It is about 2 seconds of video from my iphone - about 2.4 MB of .mov - do you know how I can get a more detailed error message please? I rarely have any problem uploading photos but this is the first time I have tried to upload video. When I tried directly from the iphone it just hung so I copied the file to my Chromebook and from there got the above error. Just tried again now from Chromebook and the progress bar went quickly to 100% uploaded then it said "Error: Something went wrong while uploading... try again?". Whereas from iphone bar goes to 100% then it shows the loading icon fora few mins then gives message. So it seems there might be something wrong with the progress bar too. Same here. Stops at 7% - after a while the error message reads: "Error: Something went wrong while uploading... try again?" - hope its just temporary, but have Commonist in mind i fear its a again the same "improvement" of some software ...Sicherlich talk 20:34, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
I've got around the issue by uploading my mp4 file to a web server and pointing Video2commons to that. Not great, but it works. Dr-Mx (talk) 01:11, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
oh i'm not the only one.
mine stopped at 4%. it's a 94mb mp4.
i guess it must be a very specific bug, because i've tried both pc and mobile browsers, chrome and firefox, and they all stopped at 4% for my video. RZuo (talk) 16:24, 10 March 2022 (UTC)

V2c still maintained?

V2c has been written by one user. This user participated last year in an argument about the CU blocking of another user and was unhappy with the outcome of the argument. Them user page says, the user is no longer active at commons and there actually is very few activity by the user since. Some edits about POTY voting, some phabricator comments, but not much else. There have been no commits by the user to v2c at github since 2020 (and other github users mainly only contributed to translation). It looks like this tool has become a zombie and another commited user has been alienated and left the project. --C.Suthorn (talk) 12:42, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

That is unfortunate, and a bit of a problem I would say. Video usage on WM seems to be growing, it appears to be very popular on pages where it is deployed, at least from the stats, albeit these may be misleading. If we want users to import video tho, tools like this are incredibly important. I could point people to this tool, and expect them to use it, but explaining how to download YT files with websites, then convert to WebM with Handbrake, extract subtitle files, walk through through the nineteen fields of the upload tool, etc. would be wasting my time. --JimKillock (talk) 17:31, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

@Gabriel Classon, Chicocvenancio, and Martin Urbanec: could you please help update v2c's youtube-dl to a new version as per https://github.com/ytdl-org/youtube-dl/issues/31530#Description ? thx a lot.
quoting @dirkf's 19 feb message for the record

The problem, which was revealed by a change in the metadata served by YouTube, applied to both youtube-dl and yt-dlp and has been fixed in both programs.
There is a release of yt-dlp that includes the fix. See #31535 for discussion of whether this would be a good choice for you.
See below for ways to update to a fixed version of youtube-dl. Using -U doesn't (yet) work. A new release may be created, including the final fix, some time later than now.

RZuo (talk) 11:21, 12 March 2023 (UTC)
sorry for the ping. with my very limited coding skills i took a quick look at v2c codes. it seems it'll be too troublesome to update it manually. i guess we should just wait for youtube-dl update, unless changing youtube-dl to yt-dlp is feasible.--RZuo (talk) 19:13, 12 March 2023 (UTC)
User:Chicocvenancio, thank you so much for fixing it!--RZuo (talk) 22:08, 2 June 2023 (UTC)

DownloadError: b'ERROR: Unable to extract uploader id

I get Error: An exception occurred: DownloadError: b'ERROR: Unable to extract uploader id. RodRabelo7 (talk) 04:50, 3 March 2023 (UTC)

This error has occurred before. I assume you're trying to upload from YouTube? YouTube doesn't like direct downloads of videos from its platform, and tries to keep up with blocking software that allows this to happen. Video2commons uses youtube-downloader to extract videos from YouTube, which itself keeps updating to outpace YouTube blocking it. Seems it's in a down period at the moment. You can report the issue, but they're probably aware. Kingsif (talk) 02:25, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
Kingsif, you’re right. I’m trying to upload from YouTube. Still not working, unfortunately. RodRabelo7 (talk) 10:30, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
Also having the same issue. Shame YouTube sucks so bad. OmegaFallon (talk) 23:27, 11 March 2023 (UTC)

I'm now getting the same trying to upload from Vimeo. - Jmabel ! talk 22:57, 19 March 2023 (UTC)

What the deal is with not being able to extract uploader ID

I want to start a discussion about this. @Llywelyn2000 has posted on Commons talk:YouTube files that they tried contacting the developer of Video2commons with no luck. youtube-dl itself hasn't updated since 2021. The alternative youtube2mediawiki hasn't been updated since 2015, so there's no alternative avenue either.

From all the error logs it seems this is an issue with youtube-dl, and I think I have a theory as to why it's broken, namely that YouTube has sort of stopped using channel IDs and switched to a Twitter-like @ system. Though, honestly, knowing what's broken helps us very little. Our only real hope is to contact "Ricardo Garcia Gonzalez" or one of the other "youtube-dl developers."

I'd like this thread to remain open to anybody with ideas on potential solutions to this problem, as several people have posted here with a desire to upload videos but can't because of the current tools being broken. Any ideas on solutions or ways to move forward would be greatly appreciated.

Mentioning some people who may want to participate in this discussion: @Kingsif @HeminKurdistan @Rzuo OmegaFallon (talk) 00:52, 12 March 2023 (UTC)

I want to also state that although my technical knowledge is limited I have tried youtube2mediawiki and youtube-dl via the command line on my Windows machine, the former of which gave me syntax errors suggesting that it's incompatible with the 3.11 version of Python I'm running, and the later of which gave me the same error we're all getting with Video2commons, i.e. the uploader ID error. So I'm nearly certain this isn't an issue with Video2commons, it's an issue with youtube-dl. OmegaFallon (talk) 00:55, 12 March 2023 (UTC)
I deleted youtube-dl from my linux machine and installed new from github. I was not able to download videos that had been uploaded to youtube in the last week, and i was not able to download a 15 year old video. With the Android app "LibreTube" however, i can download youtube videos without problems. C.Suthorn (talk) 12:11, 12 March 2023 (UTC)
Di was nice enough to direct me towards a useful tool: this site converts to WEBM without any strings attached as far as I can tell, other than it being a tad slow. This appears to be our best option currently. OmegaFallon (talk) 13:01, 12 March 2023 (UTC)
@OmegaFallon: All of my tries with that tool so far have resulted in "There was an issue with the YouTube link you submitted. Please try again." :(   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:30, 2 April 2023 (UTC)
I found a patched fork of youtube-dl and have been using that. I don't remember where I got any of it though, sorry. OmegaFallon (talk) 20:12, 2 April 2023 (UTC)
yt-dlp is a fork of the original youtube-dl. It works perfectly and is extremely fast. Pinging relevant users that may be interested: @OmegaFallon, @C.Suthorn, @Jeff G. ~ Eejit43 (talk) 02:46, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
Youtube-dl works also (you probably still have to use the patched version, the youtube-dl people seemed to want to wait for a stable situation at youtube before making a new official version). The problem is, that the maintainer of v2c no longer maintains v2c. If no one else "adopts" v2c it is more or less dead. C.Suthorn (talk) 04:28, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
thx to User:Chicocvenancio, code has switched to using yt-dlp and been working again.--RZuo (talk) 22:08, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
Resolved by moving to yt-dlp. Chico Venancio (talk) 21:04, 15 June 2023 (UTC)

Error message

Hi, I'll get the following error message when trying to upload a video:

Error: An exception occurred: FileNotFoundError: b"[Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/data/project/video2commons/video2commons/frontend/static/uploads/e7b09232-50ef-11ed-8b57-66fb5a932327'"

What can I do? CKibelka (WMF) (talk) 03:26, 21 October 2022 (UTC)

TypeError: b 'NoneType' object is not iterable

Hi, I saw a new (to me) error: An exception occurred: TypeError: b"'NoneType' object is not iterable"

Context/Reproduction-steps: I was trying to upload a file from GoogleDrive, if that's relevant? It initially recognized the file-type, and let me fill in the {information} box, but then once it was in the 2nd-step on the Task screen it failed after a few seconds.

I've added a mention on the project page, with an empty "Meaning" parameter. I didn't see the error mentioned above or in the archives. Thanks. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 22:56, 23 February 2023 (UTC)

File not found

I am trying to upload from the disk and I am receiving an error File not found. How to debug? --Juandev (talk) 09:30, 3 June 2022 (UTC)

The maintainer of v2c seems to have left. So proably there is no way to debug. You could say the file size and file type, also if the filename contains "funny" characters and the encoding and encoder of the file. you could upload a screenshot of the error. You could encode the file to webm (vp9) locally and upload with another upload tool. C.Suthorn (talk) 12:19, 3 June 2022 (UTC)

I'm getting Error: An exception occurred: FileNotFoundError: b"[Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/data/project/video2commons/video2commons/frontend/static/uploads/cf3490de-c6a9-11ed-8805-12dffaea8a17'" on a file called "Racehorse Falls 01.mp4". No "funny" filenames there. 9 seconds of video, 15.4MB. - Jmabel ! talk 23:03, 19 March 2023 (UTC)

Error uploading file from computer

Good day. I am trying to upload a mp4 video (502 Mb) from my local PC, but no matter what I try I keep getting the error "Error: An exception occurred: FileNotFoundError: b"[Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/data/project/video2commons/video2commons/frontend/static/uploads/66607222-03a3-11ed-921f-82d0630f66a4'" during the upload process. Anyone understand this error and how to get around it? Huntster (t @ c) 18:42, 14 July 2022 (UTC)

This may be a temporary malfunction of the tool. Otherwise only the maintainer of v2c can fix it. If you want to get the file uploaded soon, your best bet would be to transcode the file to webm locally, than upload with any other tool. --C.Suthorn (talk) 19:24, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
Yeah, hopefully that's the case. Unfortunately uploading locally doesn't seem to be an option either; I have a webm version of the file, and Upload Wizard errors out as well. Oh well. Huntster (t @ c) 21:30, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
@Huntster: A MW-server has been restarted. Uploading with Upload Wizard should work again. --C.Suthorn (talk) 06:38, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
Yep, converted one of the files last night. Thanks for the update. Btw, do you know if the 4Gb upload limit imposed by Chunked also applies to this tool? Huntster (t @ c) 14:18, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
@Huntster: I believe that is imposed by the backend filesystem.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:24, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, Jeff! Huntster (t @ c) 16:28, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
Actually the limit is imposed by the MW database storing file size as a 32bit unsigned integer value (=4GiB). The whole DB scheme of MW needs to be evaluated/changed (to 64bit integer for file size) to overcome this limit. --C.Suthorn (talk) 04:32, 16 July 2022 (UTC)
Very interesting. Has there been any serious consideration express by WM toward updating to 64 bit? Huntster (t @ c) 06:18, 16 July 2022 (UTC)
@Huntster: I don't know. Considering by Commons:Village_pump#MP4_patents_expiration_date, user:Donald Trungs remark about MP4, I doubt that there will be done something soon. However the Offroader upload tool splits video files into parts of less than 4GiB before upload. --C.Suthorn (talk) 12:57, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
That's very true. The lack of Foundation support for things like this is frustrating, considering MP4 being the dominant video format and the resources required to properly convert to another format. Offroader looks very useful but I don't use a mobile device for editing or for file storage. Insert sadface. Huntster (t @ c) 17:26, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
Unfortunately, getting the same error again. If restarting the MW server is what fixes this, would it be possible to create a regular restart schedule? Huntster (t @ c) 22:49, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
Getting this error as well just now. Vera (talk) 15:40, 26 March 2023 (UTC)
