User scripts

I'm not familiar with Javascript, but it seems to me that many Commons cleanup tasks could be aided with some user scripts. For example, after seeing Template:Incomplete license, it seems like it must be pretty straightforward to write a script that adds a tab to each image, "tag as incomplete license." It could then insert this template, as well as automatically leave some generic warning/info template on the uploader's talk page.

The only one I know of at the moment is the one that adds a check-usage tab to each image page. Are there any others? pfctdayelise 04:09, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

Picasa

Does anyone know any way to force Picasa to upload pix directly to commons? It would really be nice and handy... Halibutt 15:46, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

I did some looking around and reading. It seems that there is no way to search Picasa yet by CC license. See this Feb 7, 2009 thread:

Picasa now allows uploaders to pick any CC license for their image. See:

mass deletion tool

Hi!

Is there a mass deletion tool? It would really help to clean up Commons:Deletion requests/Superseded, for instance deleting all the Autobahn and Texas road shields in one go. --ALE! ¿…? 07:07, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

tool server / database time lag

Could somebody explain, why the databse used for the tool server is such much behind? I thought that the time lag of the English Wikipedia should be reduced. But instead the time lag for all other is already over one day and increasing. --ALE! ¿…? 17:12, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

Tools down?

Tools are down for weeks now (like the "tool server mediasearch", or the "check usage" tab tool). Any reason, or estimate when they will be up again? Ingolfson 08:53, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Tool to find out image source

I am an Admin on gu.wiki and know there have been several images without a proper/correct licencing tag, is there any tool which can be used to find the source of the image from Internet? I remember coming across somthing that said that a specific user/tool/bot works to find out the source of Image to check whether it is copyrighted. It is the tineye tab on top of every image page - if you activate it in your preferences / Gadgets / Maintenance Tools --Jarekt (talk) 14:53, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

Tineye shows other locations of the image on the web. It does not say which one is the original source (if any), nor whether the image is copyrighted or not. People copy images from wherever they find them, and it is frequently difficult to find the original source. Tineye helps in that effort. --Timeshifter (talk) 23:15, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

Thank you Jarekt for the info, I have now activated Tineye. Timeshifter, THank you too, I basically wanted to find other locations only, I know it is very difficult to identify which is the original source, but even if we could trace its other locations, and few of them are copyrighted, the use of it here becomes doubtfull, doesn't it?--Dsvyas (talk) 09:02, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

Nichalp's upload.pl replacement

Hi,

since upload.py has login issues I have created a replacement, written in python: kwiki.py (https://launchpad.net/kwiki.py) It can be downloaded here: http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~wojtek-golf/kwiki.py/trunk/files

Upload media is dishonest, methods don't work for video or audio

The whole issue of OGG/Theora encoding makes the "Upload media" section generally dishonest, unhelpful, and basically useless for someone trying to accomplish that. Most of these media tools don't apply to that sort of media, so generalizing as media is too non-specific.

The "Upload media" section should be renamed to "Uploading still images and GIFs", and there should be a new section exclusively for "Uploading video and audio" that can cover those details.

List of uploaded images

What's the best tool to make a tabular (HTML table, CSV or TXT) list of uploaded files by user? Just plain list of all uploaded images, without any thumbnails. I'm looking for equivalent tool to [1]—that tool seems to be inactive. dariusz woźniak (talk) 17:52, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

CommonSense

CommonSense was a web based tool for finding appropriate categories for images on Commons. This tool uses the live database copy on the Wikimedia tool server and is developed and maintained by User:Duesentrieb.

Introducing Toolhub

What does your participation on the Wikimedia projects look like? Do you edit articles? Upload files? Patrol vandalism? Translate articles? Translate interface messages? Do you organize people, online or offline? Do you train new editors, or new trainers? Do you write code?

There are many different ways to contribute to Wikimedia – more than you would expect just from reading Wikipedia articles. Over the past several years, volunteers have developed technical tools that help Wikimedians improve content, patrol vandalism, and perform many other tasks. They make it possible to do what the wiki software alone cannot accomplish. Without these tools, many of our projects would slow down to a crawl.

I am very happy to announce a new project called Toolhub which seeks to create a searchable index of these tools in all languages. Taxonomy/"Bread crumbs"

Because sometimes there is a need to create a chain of categories ("bread crumbs"), as, for example, here, I tried to find a tool to speed up the process (something like breadcrumb widget), as well as the ability to compare with other projects' chains. From {{Category tree all}} it was possible to make only {{Taxonomy}}. But it has disadvantages: 1) statically located only on 1 page; 2) it is inconvenient to enter category names; 3) the category name does not appear if you start typing it; 4) can not be compared with other projects. So I tried to make a small tool that would be devoid of these drawbacks. While in it there is an opportunity to use only categories of Commons. I plan to add the opportunity to compare with Wikidata items, with Wikipedia category chains and other. --Fractaler (talk) 07:52, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
