Proposal for Wikidata and Commons model

In Wikidata, we distinguish between a creative work, its various published or manuscript editions, and individual map pages in collections. This follows a modified version of the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) model used for bibliographic items.

Works

The creative work in the abstract.

• In Wikidata: cartographic work (Q25106976), literary work (Q7725634)
• In Commons: Category for the entire work, if we have multiple images
  • Examples: Atlas of the Counties of England and Wales (Q27919282), Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Q1368633), The Description of Essex (Q106444451)

Editions

We should create an "edition" item for each published version, custom assemblage of maps, or manuscript copy of a work for which we have images.

• In Wikidata: map edition (Q56753859), manuscript (Q87167)
• In Commons: Subcategory for each edition for which we have more than one or two images
  • Examples: Lord Burghley's Atlas (Q105468439), Theatrum Orbis Terrarum 1570 first edition (Q106596068), Speculi Britanniae Pars: An Historical and Chorographical Description of the County of Essex, by John Norden, 1594 (Q106444484)

Individual maps

Manuscript maps in notable collections should have their own Wikidata items. Printed maps in notable collections may have individual items.

• In Wikidata: manuscript map (Q2353983) (hand-drawn map), individual copy of a map (Q63872468) (printed map)
• In Commons: Images, grouped into a subcategory of the edition if we have multiple images of the same exact map.
  • Examples: map of Devon (Q105815520), Coloured manuscript map of the borders of Scotland and the West Marches of England (Q105997978), Dioecesis Bergensis Tabvla (Joan Blaeu, 1667) BL 114.h*.1 (15) (Q63872802)

Insight

I'm a graphic worker how creates maps, illustration in quite a wide rang, see Gallery Goran_tek.en
I have started to actively fill out and correct Structured data on my pieces. It's quite hard to grasp this but I think I'm starting to understand a very small portion of it.
What I haven't found yet is how to add SD for that type of work I do (and many other graphic workers), mostly as requests from Graphic lab at commons and wikipedia. Also when I read here in the proposal I can't really find anything for that type of work.
So my question is, do you think I could be of any help here in sections for maps, illustrations etc?
I don't have all the knowledge regarding SD yet (willing to learn more), but I have experience from the other part. --always ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 15:50, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

Best practice for maps without Wikidata item

Hi:
