How should we state the sequence of conference presentations?[edit]

During conferences, a presentation follows another presentation. How should we link them?

Some properties that semantically sound like a good idea but we can't are follows (P155) and followed by (P156). We can't use them because the data type of those properties is "Item" instead of "Commons media file"

I think these are some alternatives

  • Alternative no. 1: Create Wikidata items for each conference presentation, and then link the Wikidata item to the video in Commons through video (P10), then use follows (P155) or followed by (P156) between the Wikidata items
  • Alternative no. 2: Create new properties with the same name as follows (P155) and followed by (P156) that would only be used here in Commons with the data type "Commons media file"
    • I don't think creating duplicate properties for follows (P155) followed by (P156) just so that the data type of them is "Commons media file" is a good idea since having properties in Commons and Wikidata with the same name but with different data type could confuse some users
  • Alternative no. 3: Make follows (P155) and followed by (P156) accept two data types: "Commons media file" and "Item".
    • I've never seen a property that accept two data types. Nor I don't know whether it is possible in Wikibase for a property to have two datatypes.

A recording of a conference presentation ≠ a presentation[edit]

I think the proposal confuses various things. We are describing a media file here, not an actual presentation at a conference. A Commons video of a conference talk is not a presentation - it's a video recording of a presentation. It's not part of a conference, but it documents the conference. @Spinster: I agree with you. I proposed doing that in this revision, but now I think that's not a good idea, because as you said, a file is not a conference presentation. Is there any value you recommend using for instance of (P31) for conference presentations in Commons? -- Rdrg109 (talk) 19:50, 16 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Property for linking photos to conference talks[edit]

As of now, there's a property proposal for Commons for linking photos that were created during an event. We could use this property for linking photographs that were taken during a conference talk.

Here's the property proposal if you are interested in supporting it: wikidata:Wikidata:Property proposal/created during.
