More on this contrasted with Wikidata please.[edit]

The software development for implementing structured data on Commons is based on that used for wikidata.org and is being written with compatibility with other Wikimedia projects in mind.

It is the Wikidata software, right? In Special:Version I see much the same set as wikidata:Special:Version: mw:Extension:DataValues Time, mw:Extension:Wikibase DataModel, etc. Are {{Information}} templates creating properties for articles yet? I don't see a Property namespace yet, will commons reuse wikidata's?

Is the difference for commons that all the data lives on commons, so rather than having "Q" items on wikidata.org corresponding to each article, you'll directly describe each file in the same wiki? (Edit: but I see references to a separate "commonsdata" in e.g. d:Wikidata_talk:WikiProject_Visual_arts#Wikidata:Notability_and_artwork)

Interesting stuff -- SPage (WMF) (talk) 03:46, 8 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@SPage (WMF): -- I think you got it pretty much right. The plan is to use the same software ("wikibase") that Wikidata runs on, but to have data attched to a filename, rather than a Q number. "CommonsData" is just a unofficial shorthand nickname that some people sometimes use for the Commons wikibase.
The exact data modelling is still under discussion. It is likely that, as far as possible, the Commons system will use the same P-numbers as Wikidata, to facilitate information being shifted between the Commons system and central Wikidata (and to reduce confusion). {{Information}} templates (or rather, their successors) will draw facts both from Commons (eg who painted a picture) and from Wikidata (eg the painter's dates). But there is a lot more still being designed, let alone implemented. Jheald (talk) 13:06, 8 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
