Reviving pre-pandemic theme proposals

I saw two theme proposals get archived because of the pandemic: ‘Back to school’ and ‘Women in Sports’. We have the new proposal ‘Digitization at school’, but does anyone want to revive the ‘Women in Sports’ proposal? (I haven’t done it myself because I don’t have an updated gallery of examples.) Re-use of photos

Andrea Berg at a concert in Chemnitz in 2014.

I thought this was kind of cool: this photo took 3rd place in a photo challenge and then used as an example for a later photo challenge! I wonder if this has happened with any other photos. Brianjd (talk) 12:21, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

I often add additional photos to the example galleries. Many additions come from already recognized images, like winners of previous challenges, valued images, quality images, etc. So that scenario is not unusual. --Jarekt (talk) 02:57, 3 February 2023 (UTC)

‘Support as proposer’

What does that even mean? What is the point of writing it? Most proposals say it, but some don’t. I find it confusing. Brianjd (talk) 10:50, 3 February 2023 (UTC)

I, like some others, do this to make it clear, that I am voting for my own proposal. It is certainly not necessary to identify like this, I do it out of courtesy. I certainly did not want to confuse anyone. Should I stop? --Kritzolina (talk) 12:11, 3 February 2023 (UTC)

@Kritzolina What about signing each proposal? Some proposals are already signed. That would achieve the same purpose, but also (provided the signature is under the gallery) allow easy responses using the reply tool. Many proposals starts with at least one support vote from the proposer. "Support as proposer" is just clarifying that as a full disclosure. It is not necessary to vote for your proposal, but if you do than it is fine to acknowledge it. --Jarekt (talk) 00:54, 4 February 2023 (UTC)

@Jarekt We seem to have a lot of proposals with 3–4 support votes, which may or may not include the proposer. I find this confusing. I would prefer that users not vote on their own proposals at all. Brianjd (talk) 03:31, 4 February 2023 (UTC)

Voting on your own proposal seems to be pretty standard in cases where larger amount of votes are to be expected. See also Featured picture candidates. There are probably reasons for that and I do not see the harm in it. So why forbid it? FlocciNivis (talk) 13:43, 4 February 2023 (UTC)

Invalid entries

The new challenges have just started, and we already have three invalid entries out of eight (uploaded prior to challenge period). All are from the same nominator. I have left a note on the nominator’s talk page, but have not removed the entries pending discussion here. (Organizers might prefer to do so themselves at the end of the month. The Maintainers Manual doesn’t say anything about removing invalid entries early.) Brianjd (talk) 03:56, 4 February 2023 (UTC)

Entries uploaded prior to challenge period are handled automatically by the C# code used for page processing (Commons:Photo challenge/code/voting.cs). They will be detected and will not advance to voting page. --Jarekt (talk) 04:25, 4 February 2023 (UTC)

Monthly discussions about future challenge themes

The top of Commons talk:Photo challenge/themes says: Please add Commons talk:Photo challenge to your watchlist and participate in the monthly discussions about future challenge themes.

There don’t seem to be any such discussions, which I find a little disappointing. It would be nice to have some idea what is going on, especially if we are going to use the Lunar/Lunisolar New Year (Q1944136) theme next month (which seems unlikely, but I don’t know how themes are actually chosen). It looks like the most supported theme is ‘Spectral color - Rainbow colors’, but it was suggested to run that in another month. Besides that, we have ‘Baby farm animals’ and handle (Q200266), along with the somewhat suspicious ‘Digitization at school’. Brianjd (talk) 10:49, 26 January 2023 (UTC)

I was involved in discussions here in previous years, but not a lot of people participated and as I am suggesting a lot of challenges, it did not feel appropriate to me to dominate the discussion. Others seem to have dropped off as well. I believe Jarekt would be happy to have active discussions here again. The challenges should be chosen not strictly along the line of the most votes, even though support for a challenge of course is important. Other factors are also the mix of topics for challenges over time and especially how the two challenges harmonize with each other. And, not to forget special appropriate months, like June for the ‘Spectral color - Rainbow colors’. --Kritzolina (talk) 08:12, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

@Kritzolina and Brianjd: Yes in the past we had discussions about which challenge to run each month, as we had more people participating in choosing themes. However over time those discussions dropped to always the same 2 people and than down to just me. After a while I skipped this step. In the past, the rule of thumb was that whoever is willing to create the new challenge page (see Commons:Photo challenge/Maintainers Manual for how), is the one that can pick the challenge from the top scoring Commons talk:Photo challenge/themes proposals. I will pick something this evening, maybe "handles" and "cruise ships" (?), but if there are other ideas or someone wants to create new challenge page. Handles and cruise ships sounds good to me! I can definitely create more themes for challenges, if you want to, but I do not want to flood the page with too many suggestions just by me. Just accidentally dropping by: I was there in the very beginning, but pretty much lost interest when it seemed that people preferred "upload things from your archive" type challenges over "go out and shoot" challenges and themes that were "things we need more images of" over things that would challenge me as a photographer. But I'm very happy to see that the project is still alive (no doubt thanks to @Jarekt) and there have been a couple more creativity inducing themes like "greens" recently.

Regarding monthly discussions: We had them, but in my memory they were not very efficient and we were often late with our selection of themes. You also end up discussing each proposal twice, first on the /themes page and then again in the monthly discussion. The current system seems to work, so ... I thought the status was always that Jarekt decides the themes because he creates the pages, but always takes into account the votes and comments on Commons talk:Photo challenge/themes. We are already voting on the themes there so there's usually not much point to also discuss them here. Too many pictures submitted

Wiki Science Competition

Hi, I would like to remind you all the if the challenges of the months of November and Deceber have some theme of clear or possible technical or scientfic interest, I usually suggest to put a short reminder in the page of the challenges to submit some entries also at Wiki Science Competition.

The current challanges of November are not related, I am not sure if the themes for December have been approved yet but I don't care too mucg if some specific theme is approved or not, I just think that it's useful to inform the uploders if there is some overlap, they might be interested.

In that case the best strategy is to upload via then WSC interface, than submit the image also here. That's why I prefer to add few lines. Alexmar983 (talk) 00:16, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
