One photo for both

I have uploaded an image that fits both of this month's themes, as it is "unfinished hair". Should I submit it to both, or just one? WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:53, 10 November 2022 (UTC)

Interesting question. I've seen pictures that work for multiple challenges, but for a while now, almost all challenges require you that you can only nominate pictures that you have uploaded to Commons less than a month ago, which excludes most of the cases where you'd submit twice. That's in fact why I think we can hold another insect and another arthropod challenge once every two or three years. But for a photo that matches both challenges during the same month, I have no idea what you should do. – b_jonas 09:39, 11 November 2022 (UTC)
ofc you can submit it for both. i had always wanted to do something like that just for kicks, like August 2021 "Contre-jour and Playgrounds", June 2021 "Five Birds in Flight". it's all up to you to decide.
you can do whatever you want, even if you submit five irrelevant photos to one theme ("should illustrate the challenge theme in the opinion of the photographer"). they just get reduced to 4 and no one sensible would vote for them. RZuo (talk) 10:20, 11 November 2022 (UTC)

Interface for voting on contests

I think that the current process for voting on pictures is very tedious. The current interface for voting for the Picture of the Year in comparison is pretty neat. In my opinion it could be possible to repurpose this tool for photo contests. I would appreciate opinions from other users on this. And if I'm not alone with this opinion maybe some suggestions to make this opinion/suggestion actionable? Best, FlocciNivis (talk) 13:47, 11 December 2022 (UTC)

i thought about the same thing, but dont have the coding skills or time to do it now.
i dont know how User:Jarekt manages the contest. it surely seems like a difficult task.
i'd imagine improvement can be done in a few parts:
  1. script/automated tool to automatically disqualify files, and reduce "more than 4" to 4.
  2. candidate overview page should be randomised to make the contest technically fairer.
  3. script/automated tool for vote tally.
RZuo (talk) 15:53, 11 December 2022 (UTC)
@RZuo and FlocciNivis: Let me demystify the process a bit. First at some point I wrote Commons:Photo challenge/Maintainers Manual about it, what is mostly what I could figure out the process to be when I inherited it from user:Colin. We mostly use 2 C# scripts: Commons:Photo challenge/code/CreateVoting.cs and Commons:Photo challenge/code/voting.cs, detect number of issues which I then try to manually correct. The process takes about 4+-2 hours per month, so from my perspective it is not too bad. I also agree that "the current process for voting on pictures is very tedious" which was discussed occasionally over the years. I think it is a great idea to adopt some javascript tools used for the Picture of the Year, but I would prefer for the tool to work in a way which is compatible with the current formating we use so that we do not have to change the C# codes. I do not usually code in C#. I specialize in Python, Lua, Matlab, R, C , C++, Pascal, Fortran and few others, but no C#, javascript, java or languages useful for this project. --Jarekt (talk) 23:05, 11 December 2022 (UTC)
@Jarekt and RZuo: Thank you both for your answers! I might be able to do something here myself. I have experience programming in Javascript.
For the POTY I found the following Help:Gadget-EnhancedPOTY.js. It is unfortunately over 2000 lines of code, that is not very documented very thoroughly. So it's probably not as easy to transfer as I first thought.
And I agree that we should keep the current pipeline in place and integrate a new voting interface into it.
I have however never done anything with gadgets in Wikimedia so far and could need a bit of guidance. So my suggestion would be to wait a little bit. Maybe other people have some further ideas. Otherwise I would try to contact the author of the POTY gadget, if they would be willing to help or advise me a bit on this. FlocciNivis (talk) 00:08, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
maybe you can help poty first. XD
the organisers seem to have difficulty setting up the contest, which is why it's being held now instead of earlier in the year. RZuo (talk) 05:40, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
I always wished that PhotoChallenge could get a better UI for submissions and voting. It is an area where newbies contribute images without understanding wiki syntax and the submission page can get errors in it that can disrupt (and risk losing) other people's submissions. So I'd like if we could improve both aspects, submission and voting. The Wiki Loves Monuments contest uses a special wizard page for submitting images, perhaps we could look at that or similar contests.
Wrt keeping the voting wiki end-result the same, I don't mind changing the code. I think the ideal solution would be for someone to be able to press a button online to generate the results pages, rather than doing it offline on a home computer. But we don't need to achieve everything in one go, and a migration where there was a new UI on top of the existing wiki could be a valid step. There is a scheduled job that runs on the Commons FP page to collect votes at the end of a nomination period, and work out if it passed/failed, and move the image into the FP gallery if it passed. I wonder if there is anything in that area that someone could do something similar to count the votes here?
Doing a new UI is also an opportunity to think again about the voting system. Are we happy with it. It was invented quite quickly without great discussion, in a kind of experimental way (let's try this and see how it goes) and ended up not changing. Is it still good? The main intention with it was that it should be entirely positive (unlike FP and QI which can be very negative) and we have a simple ranking system where you pick the best few photos to award points to, but also you can give "love" to other photos. Anything about that we want to change?
I can code in C# but unfortunately don't know Javascript well enough to write in it. I can certainly change code to process any generated wiki and output voting results if we change the rules or page layout at all.
Perhaps we should try again to ask for help on the village pump, at Wikipedia village pump and also from WMF. Between all those, we could maybe get some good Javascript & wiki expertise to produce something solid and user friendly. And perhaps with comments in the code too! -- Colin (talk) 09:55, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
@Colin I think we should do this step-by-step. First a new voting interface should work with the current rules. Then, if voting becomes more accessible, dynamics will change again anyway and it might be necessary to adjust the rules. In my opinion ideally the UI would be more general and allow for different rules to be set.
And I agree that asking on village pump is a good idea. In the best case this UI wouldn't depend on one single developer, but have a group of people who are able to do bug fixes and use it. FlocciNivis (talk) 17:46, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
I can code in c# and javascript or basically any language, if you tell me what to do I could do the code. BTW I made an extension for Quality Images to improve the voting process. And I can do what you ask me --Wilfredor (talk) 16:41, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
BTW, its better do it on typescript and compile it to javascript --Wilfredor (talk) 16:44, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
Thanks very much Wilfredor. In terms of voting, we want something to automate the rules at Commons:Photo challenge/2022 - November - Unfinished things/Voting. At the moment, each candidate is written by a program as raw wiki text in a section of its own. The code that generates this page can easily be changed and perhaps it would be best if a template was created for a candidate. I'm not knowledgeable about templates but there are plenty people who are. The generating code sizes the thumbnail in a way that each image gets the same area of screen, even if then some are taller or some are wider. That's to make it fair. And we include a description and a link to the full size image. The latter makes it easy to avoid going to the file scription page where you might find out who the photographer was. I'd like to continue to keep the existing votes hidden, but we could discuss whether we want to keep it possible to have a peek or whether to completely hide the votes (they could be held in a comment in wiki text, so it didn't appear on the UI, or maybe there are other ways). We want to enforce the rules that there are only three votes that award numbers 1, 2 or 3. But you can give as much love votes as you like. We don't want to make the generated wiki text too complicated as we want to be able to review the diffs/history in case someone mucks about with it or breaks it by accident.
Wrt the suggestion to randomise the order, I think someone tried that very early on but the performance for loading the page was horrendous. So we'll need to be careful with that. The page can already become difficult to load if the challenge is very popular. So I don't think randomising is a critical feature to begin with. -- Colin (talk) 11:10, 13 December 2022 (UTC)
I would like to start with a template to make the nominations more homogeneous to start, I would like to know your opinion. Wilfredor (talk) 23:58, 13 December 2022 (UTC)
The nominations, for voting, should be homogenous as they are created by a tool, not by hand. A template has appeal, as a software developer, since it looks less like lots of copy/paste. But if nobody had to write all that text (it's generated) and nobody has to edit it (there will be a new UI) then maybe that doesn't matter. From the point of view of parsing the page, a template makes it easier than free text, but not a huge amount easier if that free text always follows a set pattern. I have a feeling that having lots of templates on a page can be a performance problem but can't remember if that was something we saw at FPC or was a feature of a featured process on Wikipedia. Does Cart recall? If you know how to create a template for each entry, then we could give it a go on a test page. The template would need:
  • File name
  • Caption text
  • Creator user
  • Date taken
  • Date uploaded
  • Fullsize image width
  • Fullsize image height
The thumbnail size is currently calculated:
  • int factor = 240000
  • int thumbPx = (int)(Width * Math.Sqrt(((double)factor) / (Width * Height)));
The text for megapixels is calculated:
  • double mp = ((Width*Height)/1000.0/1000.0);
  • double mpRound = Math.Floor(mp*10.0)/10.0;
  • string mpText = mpRound.ToString("F1");
If it is too hard to calculate that in the template, both can be supplied as parameters. -- Colin (talk) 10:34, 17 December 2022 (UTC)
Got the 'ping'. The template problem was not at FPC but QIC. That page had (has?) troubles with putting templates inside templates. I haven't been active there for some time now, so I don't know if the problem still exists. Some templates did not function inside the templates used on the page and certain characters in text in templates would cancel out parts of the texts. --Cart (talk) 12:22, 17 December 2022 (UTC)
Hi @Colin: The template was done using your instructions here, I also added a small documentation, you can ignore the error message at the beginning Wilfredor (talk) 19:25, 23 December 2022 (UTC)
