Convert to SVG[edit]

I think you should mention that PDF can often be converted to SVG (with Inkscape or Illustrator). --Rudloff (talk) 23:14, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to add a section about that. I, and many others, would like to know how to do that. A separate page might be created to explain it in detail. Commons:Converting PDF graphics to SVG image files. --Timeshifter (talk) 01:04, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I personnaly use Adobe Illustrator for that. (Just open the file and save it as SVG.) But as it is shareware, I think it would be better if someone using a free vector graphics editor (like Inkscape or Sodipodi) made the tutorial. --Rudloff (talk) 14:26, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have a problem with using shareware. Please explain the exact steps to convert a specific illustration in a PDF document to an SVG file. --Timeshifter (talk) 09:36, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  1. Open the PDF file with Adobe Illustrator.
  2. (Optional) Remove unneeded stuff, resize, adjust colors, etc
  3. Save the file as a SVG (File > Save as...) and use the following recommended parameters :
How long does the Adobe Illustrator trial version here last?:

30 days. --Rudloff (talk) 12:11, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Can any of the free PDF tools here convert to SVG?:

I don't think so, these mostly convert to HTML or DOC. I would rather recommend using Inkscape or Scribus. The process should be quite similar to Illustrator. (I can't be totally sure, as I haven't use them for a while.)
I will try to write a Scribus tutorial, as I really don't want to encourage the use of non-free software.

Most people don't care if software is open source. Ease of use is much more important. I tried Inkscape and soon gave up. Irfanview is much easier for what I need to do, and it is freeware. A plugin for IrfanView editing of PDF to SVG would be nice. --Timeshifter (talk) 17:39, 7 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As a free (as in speech) project, I think Commons should encourage its user to use free software, but freeware is fine. The problem with Illustrator is that is it really expensive !
If you know any good (and multiplatform) freeware vector graphics editor, please add it to the list.
