Wikimedia CH accounts[edit]

These requests have been moved to Bureaucrats' noticeboard -- (talk) 14:16, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

After looking at a few of the recent GWtoolset uploads I spotted several things which would quickly have been picked up if the upload had been discussed first on Commons:Batch uploading. Since the GWuploads are normally not done by Commonists/Commoners that (or some similar forum) is the place where feedback would be able to influence the upload before it was done.

For the partners currently looking at using the tool has this been brought up? Should it maybe even be a requirement that feedback is first sought at Commons:Batch uploading (or similar) to ensure the result sits well with the community? /André Costa (WMSE) (talk) 13:30, 11 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

André: I certainly agree, thanks for raising this.

Helping New Zeelandia Te Papa collection into Commons[edit]

Due to a post by Sarah Stierch a contact to the legal department of the central New Zealand Museum The Papa collection was established. I quote their inviting reply:

"Kia ora Barbara, Thank you for your feedback. I understand you’ve also been in contact with my colleague Adrian via Twitter. At present the way to search for re-useable content is to enter your search term and check the check box “with downloadable images”. Obviously, this is not quite what you need to sort data and bulk download for Wikimedia imports. We are aware of Te Papa’s lack of an API, lack of bulk download facility, and also the lack of a filter for rights. These are both items on our development radar however, like other GLAMs, we have a finite resource of both staff development time and funding.

We have provided our No Known Copyright data to Digital New Zealand’s commercial API: The team at DigitalNZ have very kindly organised a call for you to use if you wish. follow link for API If you do wish to use that API please start here: link The DigitalNZ team are happy to provide any advice if you need it. While this may not help you with the bulk download – at least it is a dataset that might be helpful to you. Please note that some of the “No Known Copyright restrictions” material will still not be suitable for Wikimedia as, while it may be out of copyright in the New Zealand jurisdiction, some material will still be in copyright in the USA and Europe.

Kind regards, Victoria Leachman Rights Adviser Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa PO Box 467 Cable Street Wellington New Zealand Direct Dial: +64 4 381 7444 Email: victoria.leachma [at] tepapa.govt.nz"

Is there anybody around that likes to explore the collection and start uploading it to commons? It contains both images on autochthonous flora and fauna, art craft and art. --Barbara Fischer (WMDE) (talk) 09:53, 3 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Log[edit]

Hello there. Is there a log where we can see, which uploads have failed? We have uploaded 185 pictures but there are only 183 in commons. How to find out which have failed and why? Thanks. --Micha (talk) 15:10, 19 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikitech Purge 2016[edit]

Does the tool use gwtoolset.wmflabs.org directly or indirectly? If so, someone may want to save it from being deleted. -- KTC (talk) 22:53, 8 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Empty categories[edit]

Hi everyone, i am not familiar at all with this Toolset but could such empty categories be avoided?[1] Or is it a mistake of the uploader? Thank you in advance, --Arnd (talk) 17:50, 21 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Deprecated tls are suggested as link-to-see[edit]

It would be confusing if GLAM staff should open a link no more in use, and we could better point them to maybe enwiki pages? One example: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:PD --Omotecho (talk) 06:00, 7 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Removing this tool from Commons[edit]

I just filed phab:T270911 to remove this tool from Commons. This of course needs community consensus (also tagged as such). Please comment here. Multichill (talk) 17:08, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Support - I concur with this - for the GLAM community, we have not recommended GWToolset at all in the last two years, and have been telling folks to use Pattypan as a general bulk upload tool, or to use one of many well-documented bot scripts. The authentication method is not modern (does not use OAuth) and the pre-requisites for using this are rather complex - needing to apply for a special user right and then needing a domain to be white listed. GWToolset had its moment and we should not consider it a bad idea or failure if we learn from it. -- Fuzheado (talk) 17:10, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment Apparently I 'm the last one who use this tool, and I'm not sure what to think about that as I'm not familiar with Pattypan, in fact I was not even aware about it. It will force me to change my habit of being forced to change of tool, because I use it regularly and it was my intention to continue using it. Being put in front of the fact, I reserve my appreciation for later, as I currently don't know if I will have the same possibilities, the same working speed which includes the preparation of uploads, the same efficiency.... Regards, Christian Ferrer (talk) 19:12, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • I'll contact you directly to see how to do a smooth transition to another tool. Multichill (talk) 22:18, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
      • I just downloaded Pattypan and it seems quite easy to use, in fact I already use Excel tables to create the XML files needed for the GWtoolset. However,and it is a big "however", I have not got the faintest idea of how to upload the files on my computer. With GWtoolset I worked with files URLs in Excel tables. Concretely that add me a work step, and that is not a trivial workstep, e.g. in May 2020 I made a batch of 17 000 files. Does that mean that now I will have to upload such a quantity of files on my PC? what is the gain in the story? how to do such a thing? Christian Ferrer (talk) 08:44, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oh I think I understood that Pattypan can upload by URLs (XLSX vs XLS had blinded me), however in order to test it I created a .xls file with 124 images, I managed to do all steps (no errors, no warnings), I logged in and clicked "Upload" ("envoyer" in french), and I got the following message: "[1/124] Envoi de Enderleiniella (10.3897/zookeys.884.36154) Figures 1–4.jpg". But after 15min nothing more happened and not a single file was uploaded, so I clicked on "stop". @Multichill: if your message above is a proposition to help me for changing tool, so thank you, your help will be welcome. I will wait that you contact me. Christian Ferrer (talk) 17:40, 1 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose Pattypan does not do the same xml farm uploading job as GWT, so it's not 'retireable' in my view. Considering it cost $200k or thereabouts, we should be very sure before binning it. -- (talk) 21:02, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose (maybe just a ?temporary oppose? but still an oppose vote). I managed to upload the no-cropped versions of those files from my PC with Pattypan, after I extracted them from a scholarly article. However 1/it took me 42mn (!!!) to upload 36 files: first at 19:53 and last at 20:35 (36 files takes 2min to be uploaded with GWtoolset). 2/ I still not managed to upload files from URLs despite 3 different attempts, each times after to have wait 15-20min with that kind of message "[1/124] Envoi de ..." but without further reactions.
    I'm rather skeptical and pessimistic about this tool change as far as I'm concerned. I will therefore oppose unless I have a suitable and as effective tool (that I am able to operate (forgive me for thinking at me)) as the GWtoolset to make my batch-uploads. That being said I'm not the center of the world and if I'm not able to use another tool, that's maybe mean that I should not make bacth-uploads, or at least that I should stop at the same time thet the tool will stop, I guess this is a question of point of view. If so then no problem I'm pragmatic, and I will find other stuffs to do, although it would be a shame because I am rather methodical with the Zookeys articles, see:
SELECT ?item ?itemLabel ?date ?commonscat ?commonssitelink WHERE {
  ?item wdt:P1433 wd:Q219980; wdt:P577 ?date; wdt:P31 wd:Q13442814 .
  FILTER(YEAR(?date) = 2018) .
  OPTIONAL { ?item wdt:P373 ?commonscat }
  OPTIONAL { ?commonssitelink schema:about ?item; schema:isPartOf <https://commons.wikimedia.org/> }
  SERVICE wikibase:label { bd:serviceParam wikibase:language 'en' }
} ORDER BY ASC(?date)

Try it!

Christian Ferrer (talk) 22:04, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I would be very interested in helping with Zootaxa uploads. If you get help from Multichill it's probably best, but otherwise please contact me and tell me about your process, your requirements (including what kind of networking you have available) and so on. I'll probably forget to check here again so please use email. Cheers, Nemo 00:16, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks you, let's wait to see the evolution. Christian Ferrer (talk) 07:49, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
 Comment I was advised to try url2commons as an option for uploading through URL's. I have not tried it yet, but it was said "You can invoke it in batch mode, so it doesn't require a UI or human intervention. And you can specify templates and categories for each upload." Ciell (talk) 10:30, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment Hi there! Thank you for the notification of this and the opportunity to feedback. I've never had any particularly major trouble with it in the past when uploading en masse for British Library so am surprised to hear it described in such dire terms! I haven't used it recently as I don't have the capacity in my role for the work, but we are soon hiring a Wikimedian in Residence again who will manage such uploads so there should be much more from us shortly. I don't know what their upload tool of choice/experience will be though. I'm surprised to see that analysis of usage as I believe BL collections have been added more recently by others, Jheald may be able to shed some light as he supports us quite a bit in this. Cheers! --Ndalyrose (talk) 11:07, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

GWToolset disabled[edit]

Hi, based on the above section and T270911, I've disabled GWToolset from Commons and the source code will be archived shortly. It hadn't been used in nearly a year and was broken in other respects. Legoktm (talk) 17:22, 19 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
