Principles

• Tinctures for all palettes are defined in one of the Tincture draw templates, the only place for their definition.
• Each one of these templates may normally define all the 13 tinctures, some plus the specials e, m, V, whether they are really in use by that palette or not.
• Only the really used tinctures of each palette are shown in the examples (as at the bottom of this page), and for the GIMP tables.

How to maintain this page

This page contains GPL palette data of heraldic colours, technically known as tinctures, which can be used in image editing tools such as GIMP and Inkscape.

The data is rendered in the form of lists or tables, making it easy to copy and paste it to individual text files that can be imported into the tool used. It is also easy to maintain such tables, to change or expand them. Every change to a table is automatically updated on this page.

(An empty edit and/or a cache purge may be necessary to see the changes immediately.)

How the partial tables are generated:

Each table is generated by a simple transclusion of the template:Tincture with all the relevant colours,

These templates have the following general structure (example: Tincture/drawBY), may be not the currently used colors); the displayed labels are also autotranslatable (using {{LangSwitch}} with a mandatory default label in English, as seen below):

• Parameter 1 is a colour, either by the one-letter-shortcode or the long name.
• Parameter 2 is optional, normally it is "box", when it is "tab" the gpl table is generated.
• {{Tincture/box}} (or {{Tincture/tab}}) gets three values: the tincture, the textcolor and the text.
• With the code gpltabnam the {{Tincture/tab}} can get some headline information.

Inserting a new palette:

This can be done by

1. Assigning a new table following the structure of the other tables in Category:Tincture draw templates as shown above
   the name suffix for the new table Template:Tincture/drawxx should not exceed the length of two characters.
   See a list of possible names in Template:Tincture/catP.
2. Inserting the transclusion of the new variation into the page, at the place where it is wanted
   New headlines may structure the page in a helpful manner.

To meet every requirement, the system is expandable without limit.

A new variation can both be used for the gpl page and for tagging an image with the used tinctures.

Editors are requested to use only the 14 standard colour names/abbreviations
and to limit creative inventions of other codes to very special cases, as e.g. in Tincture/drawGN.

Considerations for newpalettes:

The template:Tincture is heavily used; alterations of the template itself should be restricted to a bare minimum.

Before anything is done, the template checks whether the ss= code is valid; most codes currently used are known to the template,

and unknown codes are checked with an #ifexist: request. This is a rather expensive interrogation!

It remains the responsibility of the editor neither to expand the template for rarely used variations, nor to accept the "if exists" for frequently used variations.

Only a few variations have all colors defined.
