Maps vs Satellite pictures and Aerial photographs[edit]
To me, in most cases I'll look for either a map or an image to illustrate an article, so maybe we should include the Category:Satellite pictures--branch, or maybe we could include an link at Template:Oldmapslink (which is to be placed in any maps-category), to get the branches similarly? the same with Category:Aerial photographs greetings --W!B: 09:21, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

- ah, well, that won't help, as thats just top level, I'd prefer to have a tree similar to maps, thus the link should be in any categoery - but the template is quite complicated (including some template from meta) and not well documunted, so I prefer to have ist done by a specialist - its enough to make a see also in my opinon - greetigs --W!B: 03:33, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Old maps including old maps of history[edit]
The template used on many or most old maps category pages does not reflect the four categories discussed at points 4 and 5 and in the unfilled example that follows them.
It produces this:

Map shows Category to use
{{{1}}} in maps older than 70 years [[:Category:Old maps of {{{1}}}]] or its subcategories
{{{1}}} in modern times [[:Category:Maps of {{{1}}}]] or its subcategories
{{{1}}} in history [[:Category:Maps of the history of {{{1}}}]] or its subcategories
That omits "Old maps of the history...". I know that it should be a subcategory of "Old maps..." and of "Maps of the history..."; but that's not a convincing reason for not listing it specifically, because the same logic would require "Maps of the history" to be omitted.
I know that there are only three of them at present, but that too is not a reason for omitting a category that is officially desired and may have content some day in respect of any area. The media in category "Old maps showing history" comprise 26 too-generally categorized files, which if better categorized would be wanting several categories of "Old maps of the history of...". (Some of them possibly don't show history, but some clearly do.) There are, for example, at least three that would fit into Category:Old maps of the history of the United States. Check Category:Maps showing history for more candidates, such as File:Bulgrin1891.jpg.
I suggest that the template should be changed to show all four of the desired categories, for proper demonstration of the "parallel, complementary networks of categories".
