Commons:Wikimania 2014

This page aims at coordinating Commons at Wikimania 2014, a series of events about Wikimedia Commons at the next Wikimania conference in London.

In 2014, Wikimedia Commons will celebrate its 10th anniversary. What could be better than getting together Wikimania and celebrating this special occasion? At Wikimania 2013 in Hong Kong, Commons photographers went on two photo tours and enjoyed spending time together. However, Wikimedia Commons was barely visible at the conference. Next year, we're going to change that. With presentations about Wikipedia's biggest sister project and photography in general, special Commons celebration events and more get-togethers than ever before.

Comments from Wikimania 2014 organiser EdSaperia (talk)[edit]

Hi All - I finally managed to track down this mythical page! I just wanted to say:

  • Free Culture is as close as we get to a commons track. It will be a mix of commons and GLAM stuff, mostly.
  • If you want to organise fringe events, which is basically anything not covered by the formal programme (i.e. sessions chosen by the programme committee), you can make a page for it on the wikimania wiki and put a link to it in the fringe programme - this can be things like field trips and evening events and so on, but also unofficial sessions that can even occur during the conference in the conference venue. There are lots of breakout spaces for exactly this kind of unofficial session which will be made explicit in the coming months. For now, you can just put it as location and time TBC and start gathering interest.
  • I can't guarantee that I'll be able to keep an eye on this page; if you move this discussion to the Wikimania 2014 wiki, or have someone at least tell me what you're deciding, then I'll try and support your initiatives as much as I can! We're really keen to have this kind of decentralised activity, and I'm trying to deliberately keep the programme quite sparse and supply a wide variety of breakout spaces.

Ideas for events (meetups, presentations, workshops, etc.)[edit]

You don't have to be the presenter/organizer – using this list as a wishlist works as well ;-)

  • one more "How to take good photos with a cheap camera" with Dschwen (please in London with functioning technnology ;) --Ralf Roleček 19:11, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • "State of Multimedia", a follow up to this year's multimedia roundtable with Fabrice Florin. Let's see what the multimedia team got done and how the goals evolved. --Dschwen (talk) 19:57, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • a Computer with direct LAN for upload of pictures (speed LAN) and a printer for all Visitors of Wikimania to print boarding passes for return-flight? --Ralf Roleček 20:59, 14 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Some 5-minutes presentations w/ following panel discussion: "The Future: Wikimedia Commons in 2024" --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 05:13, 15 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • I had thrown an idea at Commons:Picture of the Decade - some sort of a competition for the occasion. We ought to think about a type of celebration for the tenth anniversary of commons which will be on 7 September 2014. Wikimania could be a prequel to such an event. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 04:00, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
  • Workshop: "You want to significantly improve your photos? Buy an alarm clock!" – The word "photography" literally means "painting with light". I will demonstrate how shooting under the right lighting conditions (as in: getting up early) will help you with getting great shots. As part of the workshop, I'll also show you how to further enhance your images during post-processing by using tools like Viveza and Color Efex Pro. The workshop will be targeted at beginners as well as at intermediate photographers, with examples mostly from landscape and architectural photography. --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 18:33, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Cheap Camera Challenge" – Some of our featured pictures photographers will be provided with a cheap camera. They'll have a certain amount of hours to shoot some images and get back to the conference venue. Who will be able to take great pictures without expensive gear? --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 03:56, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Workshop: Lets make Commons a better place. Working out ideas for improvement (e.g.: Better search, Next/Prev buttons within categories, ...) --Matthias Süßen (talk) 08:08, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Video: A video to show the Commons diversity, something like the My name is: contributors who explain who they are and what they do on Commons. The goal would be to demonstrate we're an international and multifacet community. --Dereckson (talk) 22:15, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Synergies between Commons and Wikidata for better categorization": so far this is just an idea in my head, but if other people are interested, we could organize a talk. --MB-one (talk) 09:02, 14 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I might attend the conference[edit]

Add your name here if you'd like to attend the conference and don't know yet whether you can make it.

  1. If timing allows, definitely!--Eloquence (talk) 23:03, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  2. I'll do all I can! I will join preparations as soon as I am confident I have the capacity --Susannaanas (talk) 07:19, 20 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

General support and endorsement[edit]

You can support this project irrespective of whether you plan to attend Wikimania 2014 or not.

  1. Sounds like a great idea. A dedicated Commons track at the conference itself might also work.--Eloquence (talk) 23:03, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
