Wiki Loves Monuments 2023 in Georgia

Wiki Loves Monuments is an annual international photographic competition held during the month of September, organized worldwide by the Wikipedia community members with the help of local Wikimedia affiliates across the globe. Participants take pictures of local historical monuments and heritage sites in their region and upload them to Wikimedia Commons. The aim of the event is to highlight the heritage sites of the participating countries with the goal of encouraging people to capture pictures of these monuments and to put them under a free license which can then be re-used not only in Wikipedia but everywhere by everyone.

This year, by the organization of Wikimedia UG Georgia's members, Georgia is participating in the contest for the fifth time.

Join us contribute free-licensed photographs of the Cultural and Historical Heritage in Georgia!

Why participate?

Georgia is one of the oldest states in the world; which has a rich history and culture. This contest is an excellent opportunity to bring your camera, go to the heritage sites listed, take some photos, and show the history and culture of Georgia from your point of view to the rest of the world!

Participating in the contest is a great way to experiment and learn which photos gain recognition. You certainly don't need to be a professional photographer to take photos useful for Wikipedia. Here's a great chance to try it out! Entries to the local competition are eligible for selection to the international finale, and did we mention there are prizes to win?

Competition rules

We try to keep the competition clean and simple to participate. There are only a few rules for photos to participate in the contest in Georgia. Let's quickly go through them.
All entries must be original photographs uploaded by their authors.
All photos must be uploaded within October 2023 to be eligible
All photos must be under a free license
Participants must have an active email account.
Lists of eligible sites are published on Georgian.
Captions and description are required
Make sure that there are no visible watermarks
All photos must have at least 2Mpx.
Please note that there is no Freedom of Panorama in Georgia, so you can only upload photos of monuments if the architect died before 1953 or if the building was constructed before this date (if the architect is unknown).

Next to that, there are a few practical rules and advice:

The Jury

In October, you may upload pictures (old or new) as you want from the given list that you have visited. At the end of the month, the national jury will evaluate the photographs and select the best 10 pictures of the heritage monuments in Georgia to submit to represent in the international finale. If there are any doubts about the implementation of the rules, the jury decides.

Judging criteria

The jury will determine the winners of the international contest by taking into consideration the following criteria (in no particular order):

  • Technical quality (sharpness, use of light, perspective, etc.);
  • Originality;
  • Usefulness of the image for Wikipedia.
