Wiki Loves Cosplay

Wiki Loves Cosplay is an initiative organized by WikiVibrance with the aim of celebrating Young people in the Wikimedia Projects in a fun and people-centered way. It consists of a photo contest open to all Wikimedia communities, but also to people with no previous experience, in which any image related to the art of Cosplay will be accepted.

Three different prizes will be offered, in which the best photograph of the contest, the best costume, and the best photograph of a character or series that does not have any coverage in Wikimedia Commons will be valued.

Why Cosplay?

[edit]

Cosplay is an activity in which participants wear accessories and costumes that represent a specific character.

It is an urban culture whose values are related to those of the Wikimedia movement: cosplayers design and make their costumes, in the same way that in the wikimedia movement self-training, research and hard work is carried out to make articles, photos, documents for Wikisource, etc.

We also believe, given the copyright laws that govern the free culture movement, that Cosplayers are our allies, as long as their representation of popular culture characters is compatible with Wikimedia Commons, and therefore, It serves to illustrate the many articles that Wikipedias in all the languages of the world have on popular culture: video games, animated series and comic books/manga.

How to participate

[edit]

Anybody with a Wikimedia Account can participate.

There is a dedicated upload wizard and a Campaign link that must be used to upload your pictures of Cosplay. Any picture uploaded between the 16th August to 30th September will be eligible for the campaign.

Rules

[edit]
Wikipe-tan has celebrated otaku culture in the movement since its inception in 2006.

Only images made by the person linked to the account uploading the pics to Wikimedia Commons will enter the contest. Alternatively, images will also be accepted when they have been uploaded by the person represented therein, the cosplayer, provided they have the permission of the person who took the photograph for their participation in the contest.

For the purposes of the contest, the person uploading the image to Wikimedia Commons is considered to be the entrant, either the original photographer or the person depicted as a cosplayer.

In no case will images that have been made without the permission of the participants be accepted, always taking into account the laws of Freedom of Panorama in the different legislations of the globe, and any image taken from the Internet, violating copyright of the legitimate author, will be automatically eliminated for falling into license washing.

The whole event follows Wikimedia's Universal Code of Conduct, as well as Wikimedia Commons' community recomendation on Personality rights and Wikimedia Commons policy on Photographs of identifiable people and Copyright rules on the specific matter.

Awards

[edit]

Three awards will be made for the best photographs in the following criteria.

  • Best overall photography
  • Best Cosplay (costume)
  • Best photograph of series or character not represented in Wikimedia Commons
