Public domain Spanish Civil War pictures are nearly impossible to find in Spain, not even in its national archives. The pictures, however, can easily be found in foreign websites with much higher quality, generally in two two kind of websites: Commons such as Flickr, and in greater quantity, in public domain archives. The following is a list with the most useful webs to locate free SCW resources.

Narodowe Archiwum Cyfrowe (NDA Archive)

The NAC Archive is Poland's National Digital Archive, and is holds the biggest number of public domain Spanish Civil War pictures. To extract pictures from the NAC/NDA follow these steps:

  1. Enter in this link
  2. In the top left corner there's a box with the word Zaawansowane, which transletes to Submit. Enter your search interestes here.
  3. When you have chosen a picture click on it. It will be displayed alone. Click on the picture with the middle button of the mouse.
  4. The picture has been opened on a new window. Download it.
  5. Upload it to Commons with the license {{PD-Polish}} and write {{Spanish Civil War}} below.
  6. In the description, put an external link to the Archive's photograph individual page with the name Narodowe Archiwum Cyfrowe, Poland. Don't forget to mention the author, which will most likely be Concern Illustrated Daily Courier - Illustration Archive

Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BnF-Gallica)

The Bibliothèque Nationale de France is one of the archives usually not appreciated when it comes to search Spain-related pictures. Its digital collection is called Gallica, and hosts many pictures related with the Spanish Republic, and from French concentration camps:

  1. Enter in this link
  2. Easily enter your search interestes on the centre box.
  3. When you have chosen a picture click on it. It will be displayed alone.
  4. The picture has been opened on a new window. Download it by clicking on the sixth button on the left interface. Choose JPEG and "the image in full"
  5. Upload it to Commons with the license {{PD-GallicaScan}} and write {{Spanish Civil War}} below.
  6. In the description, put an external link to the archive's photograph individual page with the template {{Gallica|NUMBER}}. Don't forget to mention the author.

Biblioteca Virtual de Defensa (BvD)

Although being a Spanish Government source, it's the one that presents the most lacks of quality and quantity. Many of the pictures are gathered in albums, without any identification at all:

  1. Enter in this link
  2. In the top left corner there's a box with the words Búsqueda/Buscar. Enter your search interestes here.
  3. On the left interface, click on "Fotografía Histórica del Museo del Ejército". Click on the picture.
  4. You can choose between all available photographs. Click on the save button. Choose "Imagen JPG", "Una selección", and "Página actual".
  5. Upload it to Commons with the license {{cc-zero}} and write {{Spanish Civil War}} below.
  6. In the description, put an external link to the archive's photograph individual page with the template {{BVD-image|NUMBER}}. Don't forget to mention the author.

Library and Archives Canada

The Library and Archives Canada is an incredible and unknown source when it comes to Spanish Civil War pictures. With more than 700 results, it is formed mainly by portraits from the men of the Mac-Pap Battalion:

  1. Enter in this link
  2. Easily enter your search interestes on the centre box. You can chose the type of material, although "All" is the most recommendable.
  3. When you have chosen a picture click on it. It will be displayed in a new page. Check the copyright is expired.
  4. Click the picture, a new page has been opened (or go back to the search results and click the picture with the middle button). Download it.
  5. Upload it to Commons with the license {{PD-Canada}} and write {{Spanish Civil War}} below.
  6. In the description, put a {{LAC|REFERENCE|MIKAN ID}} template. Don't forget to mention the author if known.

New York Public Library

The New York Public Library is responsible of the digitalization of thousands of pictures and materials. Although Spanish Civil War-related pictures are scarce, yet existent, it holds a good collection about Spanish history:

  3. When you have chosen a picture click on it.
  4. Click the picture, a new page has been opened. Download it.
  5. Upload it to Commons with the license {{PD-Scan|PD-US}} and write {{Spanish Civil War}} below.
  6. In the description, use the template {{NYPL-image-full}}. Don't forget to mention the author if known.

Others

Flickr

Flickr has a great Commons project, but many users don't follow it and many times tag a copyrighted picture as it was on the public domain. Flickr will be useful to find reenacment pictures:

  1. Enter in this link
  2. Enter your search interestes on the top right box.
  3. In the search results, click on "Any license" and switch to "Commercial use allowed"
  4. Click on a picture, download it with the button on below on the right.
  5. Upload it to Commons via UploadWizard and mark the Flickr license stated below the uploading date. Later add {{Spanish Civil War}} below.
