Images
Description

Demand Notes, produced from August 1861 to April 1862, were the first United States federally-issued paper currency. Bearing the issue date of 10 August 1861, these are the only U.S. Banknotes (1861 to the present) to enter circulation without a treasury seal. All demand notes were hand-signed by treasury officials (Assistant Treasurers or clerks) on behalf of the Register and Treasurer of the United States. Demand notes were issued in $5, $10, and $20 denominations only.
