Artificial ski-jump on Hampstead Heath, with snow-boxes
Description
Ski jumping in Hampstead Heath in London, England in March 1950. A 60 ft (18 metre) high scaffold (hill, tower) was set up, and 45 tons of snow and 25 ski jumpers were sent from Norway to England. On Friday 24 March 18 000 spectators attended the ski jumping competition, on Saturday 25 March a total of 52 000 spectators attended the two competitions that day. Oppose due to scope: A one-off artificial ski jump created near London hardly represents the major skiing areas of the United Kingdom, which are in Scotland, as I understand it, nor, from the evidence given, has this ever been repeated at that location. Support I'd say this is not only valueable but also important within this scope due to the very fact that this was a special, unique action in an area where skijumping was/is not very common, as Adam Cuerdens comment shows. I suspect that this action would be in the same category as the PR-campaigns for skiing in the US of A - and here we have a set of photos describing such an event, constructionwise and with the jump and spectators in its context. SupportAfter spending about 15 minutes hunting around, I can find no evidence of any current ski jumping hills in the UK, and in fact, Snowsport England says "There are no facilities in the UK". I stand corrected in that regard. So, there's evidence of three ski jumps in all of the UK, two and possibly all three of which were one-off events on temporary structures, all three of which used snow imported from overseas. In that regard, this set seems as representative of ski jumping in the UK as any other image or image set we are likely to find. Furthermore, these images are undoubtedly the most valuable images on Commons within this scope, as they are the only such images on Commons. I suppose I can see your point, although I do wonder whether this is a valid scope, given there's no major tradition of it. If the skiing in Scotland had ski jumps, it'd at least be a notable part of skiing in the UK. If it's only 3 or so events, spaced over a century, then I'd perhaps want to see some Wikipedia articles on such before considering support. Adam Cuerden (talk) 19:37, 21 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
