Description
This set explains in 4 stages the process known as Messinian salinity crisis from 6 to 5.3 million years ago, when the Mediterranean dried (due to its disconnection from the Atlantic) and the salt in its waters accumulated in the bottom of the sea. The dry Mediterranean basin was re-flooded after 700,000 years. The illustrations show the most important stages of this process, including recreations in an inset box. Is the only set of images in Commons that explains the Messinian salinity crisis. The collection of images was created by an art student (via wikiArS initiative) under scientific supervision, and it was reviewed and corrected by a geophysicist before its upload.

Support. All criteria are met: 1. Is the most valuable illustration of its kind on Wikimedia Commons. At the moment it's the only illustration providing a complete description of the Messinian salinization process. 2. Is nominated as being the most valuable within a suitably generic scope. Scope is right. Other broader scopes could be also used (such as Geologic history of the Mediterranean Sea or Salinization processes). 3. Must illustrate its subject well. It clearly describes the whole process illustrating entirely the subject. As the wikiArS initiative relies on the cooperation of experts in their field, we can trust it scientific accuracy. 4. Is fully described on the image page. Fully compliant. 5. Is geocoded, when relevant. It does not apply (valid exceptions are maps). 6. Is well categorized at an appropriate level.
