  •  Comment - A photo of a bridge or the end of an interstate highway can be judged, because it has a finite length. A photo of a southbound highway between two cities seems pretty impossible to judge as best in scope. Can you understand why? -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:19, 3 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment Re: User:Ikan Kekek, yes I absolutely can. I wasn't really happy with the scope to begin with. Driving through different states have such different landscapes I was hoping to think of a way to phrase the scope in that content. Something along the lines of "Driving through the hills of northern Kentucky" but I wasn't sure if that was too general. Sixflashphoto (talk) 15:42, 3 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • I see your point. I could make the scope mile marker 46 on Interstate 71 just to get the scope very tight or withdrawal the nomination (which seems a real shame) but it seems a shame that it makes it hard to upload any VI's of this type under the scope of different landscapes driving through the US. Sixflashphoto (talk) 19:34, 3 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I am willing to compromise on the scope in someway. It does resemble how a lot of Kentucky looks on the interstates outside of the cities until you get deep into Appalachia. Sixflashphoto (talk) 18:19, 4 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
One issue I think we should consider is whether VI is for "stock" photos that simply represent a thing well, or whether each scope needs to be narrowly enough defined that an infinite number of views within 100 miles or whatever couldn't fit into it. Would anyone else like to give an opinion on this? And Yann, your comparisons are well taken, but they go to the stock photos vs. narrowly-defined scope question that I posed above. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:05, 4 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The label is given to the best picture we have on Commons to represent someone or something. So the question may arise if we have several potential candidates, and if there isn't any special feature for hundreds of miles, we should just choose the best quality. I am against narrow scopes, as there is no limit. As for my examples above, the same highway looks very different in the summer when everybody goes to the south of France for holidays... ;) So should we include the time in th scope? •  Comment It is a very delicate point. For my part I accept this type of image if there can be a typical reference element like a mountain, a hill that is recognizable, or even a remarkable building even in a second plane. I do not see any; it lacks character. The scope seems to me impossible to find. I especially notice the goodwill of the participants in this discussion which makes us want to participate. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 05:24, 5 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • The valuable aspect of a picture might be that the country is perfectly flat, that there is no vegetation and no building. A picture of rocks in the middle of the desert might be valuable... Regards, Yann (talk) 18:38, 6 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • This discussion has been very illuminating for me. I of course am biased but I tend to agree with Yann which is why I originally wanted to phrase the scope along the lines of "Driving through the hills of northern Kentucky" Sixflashphoto (talk) 20:08, 6 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • I favor the easiest and largest scope possible for a given picture. I don't have much idea about the place (I could look on Google Earth, but...). How long is it? Does this highway very look different elsewhere? Regards, Yann (talk) 09:52, 7 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is really how I feel I-71 looks in Kentucky outside of the cities. I-71 isn't near the Appalachian Mountains. I will also try to make this a bit brighter today. Since we've spent so much time on it, I'll try and make it as optimal as possible. Thank you everyone for the discussion. Sixflashphoto (talk) 13:30, 7 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
