Welcome to the ISA Tool (https://isa.toolforge.org), a refined and user-friendly platform designed to enhance Wikimedia Commons (https://commons.wikimedia.org) by incorporating structured data to images contributed through Wiki Loves competitions and media campaigns. This comprehensive manual will adeptly guide you through the features and functionalities of the ISA Tool, ensuring your contributions are meaningful and valuable to the burgeoning Wikimedia Commons community.

Overview[edit]

ISA is a mobile-first tool that allows users to make "micro contributions" by adding structured data, such as captions and depicts statements, to images on Wikimedia Commons. Originally created for Wiki Loves Africa, ISA is now a versatile tool applicable to Wiki Loves competitions and all media files on Wikimedia Commons.

What is Wikimedia Commons?[edit]

Wikimedia Commons (also known as "Commons")  is a collaborative platform hosting millions of freely usable media files. It's one of the Wikimedia Projects sister to Wikipedia, serving as a repository for images, audios, videos, PDFs, and more other file formats. The platform has grown rapidly, with approximately 5 million new media files added each year by volunteers worldwide. Thousands of  the files uploaded to Commons are integrated  into Wikimedia projects, like Wikipedia, to illustrate the content they represent and to share that media with the public.

Structured Data on Commons[edit]

Structured data is data with a high degree of structured organization. Structured data on Commons is a project enhancing Wikimedia Commons with structured data to complement wikitext, templates, and categories. It facilitates better organization, reuse of data, and enables computers to process and understand information easily. With more structure, it becomes easier to reuse data in other Wikimedia projects and by third parties.

Captions: Short, multilingual descriptions limited to 255 characters. Enhance language-aware searchability and improve metadata accessibility.

Depicts: Statements that describe the primary subjects depicted in an image. Use Wikidata to select appropriate items associated with what is seen in the displaced image which was enabled on Wikimedia Commons in April 2019.In the case of files that depict multiple items, each item should be listed as a separate depicts statement, within reason. However, it is important to prioritize and include only those items that are most prominent or significant in the piece of media. To enhance clarity, there is also an option to designate a particular item as 'prominent', indicating its prominence in the media. This approach allows for a more comprehensive and informative portrayal of the depicted items, particularly in cases where the media file showcases numerous objects or individuals.

The role of the ISA Tool[edit]

The ISA Tool facilitates the addition of structured data to images through two main components: captions and depicts statements. It operates through curated campaigns created by coordinators, and anyone with a Wikimedia account can contribute.

How to create a campaign :

Coordinators choose a set of images, set campaign dates, and provide information.

Campaigns are created to organize contributors and encourage participation.

How to Create a campaign.

Step 1: Go to ISA Tool and then login or sign in with your Wikiedia account.

Step 2: Click on “Create New”.

Step 3: Input the Campaign details like Campaign Name, Short description of Campaign, Start and End Dates, Categories to use in this campaign, Metadata to collect in the Campaign and Long description of Campaign (full about info).

Step 6: Add the Structure data on the image displaced and click on save and if there is no data to add, please click on NEXT IMAGE”.

If there is no Wikidata item associated with the subject depicted, choose a more generic item which includes your subject as an example. Be as specific as you can with the primary tag. If there are multiple items clearly and deliberately depicted by the media file, all should be added as separate depictes statements, within reason. For files that depict dozens or hundreds of items (e.g. movies) only list those items which are most prominent.

User Requirements:

Contributors need to be logged in with a Wikimedia account to participate.
