Correction of typo

Could the first word in this file (below) be changed to 'Discussing' please? I don't uderstand the recommended way to do this myself.

File:'Dicsussing strategy'. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 'FM Bennett 1932' (lower right).jpg BFP1 (talk) 06:58, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

@BFP1: There is a dropdown menu that says "More" right next to the search bar. If you hover on it, you'll see an option labeled "Move". That will initiate a request to rename the file. If that fails, there's always COM:AN, which is used for this kind of request where you can't do some things due to permissions or if it simply doesn't work. I can see the file was renamed once, there is a redirect from another typo. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 07:09, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
See also Commons:Village pump‎#‎rename file. I now inserted the rename template (you need privileges to do the actual rename). If you understand diffs, see Special:Diff/646335559/646546228 for how to do it. –LPfi (talk) 07:45, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
Unfortunately the incorrect file was renamed incorrectly. Could you just put the correct word in (ie Discussing). And I will save your helpful information on the methodology for future use. BFP1 (talk) 08:09, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

FAA Remote Pilot Certificate

The FAA requires a Remote Pilot Certificate for commercial operation of a drone. When a drone is used to collect photos and videos for commercial use it must be registered and flown by a pilot with this FAA license. Since the CC license includes commercial use, I presume this will apply to Wiki Commons aerial photography and videography. Does Wiki Commons have any guidelines for providing this information when uploading aerial photography and videography? Can you point me to any information about aerial photography and videography uploads for Wiki Commons? Frankcjones (talk) 00:21, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

  • I don't think taking a photo that you allow someone else to use commercially without compensating you qualifies as "commercial use of a drone," but I'm not a lawyer. - Jmabel ! talk 00:48, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

Switching names of files

Hi. Names of people in these two images is wrong and should be replaced: File:Fazl-ol-Lah Sadr 1354.jpg and File:Mohammad Faza'eli 1354.jpg (this is Mohammad Faza'eli [1]). Possible image replacement?

So I went through and tagged File:LillianRussell.jpg as having no source this morning, but it was brought to my attention that a very similar image is available at https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/405454 which clearly establishes it as being PD. Should the original image just be edited to include source information from the Met, or should the whole image be replaced by a cropped one from the Met, or what? I'm afraid don't spend nearly enough time on Commons to remember best practices here. VernoWhitney (talk) 16:49, 8 April 2022 (UTC)

The met image is not the source of the Commons image, so no, we can't indicate a false source in the Commons page. However, the met information can be used as a reference to show evidence that the photo was published before 1891. Which, in turn, can make acceptable to keep the Commons image even if its source is unknown. In theory, every file should be accompanied with its source information, but in cases where files are without doubt in the public domain, and their sources cannot be ascertained, we don't necessarily delete them, especially when they were uploaded many years ago. Of course, nothing forbids to upload the met image as a different file under a different name. Even better, if someone is interested enough to do a search on the topic, would be to find a full uncropped copy of the original photo and information about the photographer. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:36, 8 April 2022 (UTC)

ERS-12/15

Hello!

I recently uploaded https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ERS-12_1963.jpg

I have reason to believe that the NASA publication in which the picture appears has mislabeled the satellite, and that it should be ERS-15 (ERS-12 was a tetrahedonal, not octagonal, satellite).

Can I delete the file? Can I rename it? Is this the purview of an admin?

Thank you. :)

--Neopeius (talk) 14:40, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

  • Convenience link: File:ERS-12 1963.jpg.
  • @Neopeius: Certainly don't delete, and nothing here that is particularly for an admin. Given that the identification comes from a presumably reliable source, and that source overtly says "tetrahedral" next to the image, any edit should still overtly indicate what the source says. {{Fact disputed}} might be the best choice here. In any case, I would suggest you turn the description into more of a lengthy explanation, rather than just make the terse edit you made.
  • Also: none of the categories you used exist. Non-existent categories aren't very useful. See Commons:Categories. - Jmabel ! talk 15:00, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
Neopeius, if it is a naming error, you can request to rename the file. See Commons:File renaming for more information. Hulged (talk) 15:00, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

Jmabel Thank you for your reply. :) It is in "satellites" which does exist. What do you recommend I do for the more rarefied categories? Should I make them? As for disputed facts, trust me -- SP-133 is wrong, and not surprisingly. It was a semi-classified USAF satellite at the time of publication (as noted on the SP-133 page). ERS-12 was a duplicate of ERS-11, which is on display at the Smithsonian, and which is tetrahedonal, not octahedronal. Per Jos Heyman, it's ERS-15 (sadly, he's dead, so I can't ask him how he knows, but ERS-15 is almost assuredly correct, and ERS-12 is assuredly incorrect.)

Hulged Thank you for that. I put in a move request. --Neopeius (talk) 17:03, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

  • @Neopeius: Then you presumably don't need "fact disputed". But you should explain in the description that the source has it wrong.
  • Yes, you should request a rename.
  • Either make the categories or omit them. I personally don't care which. - Jmabel ! talk 18:03, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

JPG file needs deleting because higher quality PNG file added instead

Hello wikimedia, with reference to the following two files:

The earlier uploaded JPG file needs deleting. The later PNG is of much better quality. The two images are identical in any case.

I was going to overwrite the JPG file with the PNG file but this was not possible.

Many thanks in advance.

with best wishes, RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 19:58, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

As it is your update of yesterday and the file isn't in use anywhere yet, you could just mark the file with {{Speedydelete|accidental creation, better version uploaded}}. Otherwise you could mark the file as superseded and perhaps suggest its deletion. –LPfi (talk) 11:36, 2 April 2022 (UTC)

use of privately owned photographs

We are the son and son-in-law of a deceased artist for whom we are attempting to create a Wikipedia page. We wish to use images of paintings created by the deceased artist to illustrate her artistic style and to give credence to the page. We own, privately, her entire body of work and have photographs taken by us of all of them, thus we own the copyright. Please can you explain what the 'source' of these images should be? We are grateful for your help and support in this matter. Sincere best wishes Mr Mazen Azzouz & Mr David Azzouz — Preceding unsigned comment added by MDA2022 (talk • contribs) 09:40, 2 April 2022 (UTC)

@MDA2022: Hi, and welcome. What you wrote here is inconsistent with "Her work is now widely collected internationally by both private collectors and she has the honour of having works in the collection of The Barjeel Art Foundation, Sharjah, UAE" at en:Draft:Nadira Azzouz. If she left a foundation or other legal construct to manage her paintings and rights, credit that as the source for the paintings. Otherwise, you can credit her estate for the paintings, and the photographer for the photos. For the photo of her at age 18 circa 1945 File:Nadira Azzouz.png, it is obviously not her or your own work; please be more honest. Pinging @Diannaa as tagger and interested enwiki Admin. See also COM:SIGN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:24, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
Thank you Jeff - but sadly it is still not clear HOW TO do any of what you suggest. We would really appreciate some more practical help here if possible please - we left our telephone numbers in the reply to Diannaa. The articles we are directed to are almost impossible to understand.
We manage the artists (Nadira Azzouz) entire catalogue and portfolio (400+ paintings) which have been, and some still are, owned by her son (Mr Mazen Azzouz) and myself (David Azzouz - her son-in-law) for many years.
The image of Nadira Azzouz at 18 was taken in 1945 and has also been in our possession for many years: since the subject is now dead, and presumably the unknown photographer also, to whom shall we give credit?
We have been and always will be honest but if genuine mistakes happen and information has been missed, then we apologise but this is why your kind help and support is very much needed.
Thank you for your kind and prompt attention and we very much look forward to hearing from you.

@MDA2022: Are COM:L and COM:EVID easier to understand? How about COM:Iraq and COM:UK?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:32, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
Thanks Jeff but sadly NO - they do not help and are no easier to understand. The images we want to use are our own images, taken by us (with the exception of the subject taken in 1945) of works created by a now deceased person. The original works and images thereof belong to us and so therefore we do not understand why we cannot use them! Is there a "how to ....." page that offers a step by step guide please?
Thank you for your continued help and support. MDA2022 (talk) 12:00, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
@MDA2022: To give practical help, we need details about your situation. For the 1945 photograph, UAE law seems to say it was protected for 25 years after the death of the author, prolonged to 50 years in 2002. If the photographer died at latest in 1970, its copyright expired in 1995, it was out of copyright at the URAA date in 1996 and it is thus in the public domain in the USA (unless published there). The 50 years term would have ended in 2020, and thus it would be in the public domain also in the UAE. If the photographer died later or the relevant jurisdiction is one with a term of 70 years pma, then it is probably still under copyright in the USA. Regardless, the photographer, if known, should be attributed.
For the photographs of the paintings, if you did inherit their copyright (i.e. the copyright was not sold or transferred to somebody else) you can upload them with a suitable licence, with a tag such as {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}} and a source of {{Private collection}}. You would need to also send email to VRT, to document your identity and copyright. They will probably want to ask some follow-up questions, to make sure there are no misunderstandings.
If you want to upload many files, you may also wish to ask for advice on how to upload them most conveniently.
Thank you for wanting to contribute with these works.
LPfi (talk) 12:04, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
@MDA2022: The problem is, all the photos you uploaded are copyright, and the artwork you have photographed also has a separate copyright (held by the creator of the artwork or their estate). We need to have documentation that shows the copyright holders have given permission for the material to be copied to this website. We can't take your word for it that you have the rights to these artworks; we have procedures in place for this purpose. If you are the copyright holder, not only of the photographs but of the artwork that was photographed, please provide evidence of permission by either providing a link to a website with an explicit release under a free license or by sending a declaration of consent via email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. There's full instructions at Commons:Volunteer Response Team as well as a sample email and an email generator. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 14:21, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
I edited the description of File:'Three Sisters' 2010.jpg according to the information above: Special:Diff/645926358/646078374. The same should be done for the other files, and preferably the date of creation of the painting would be added. Most importantly, the VRT process is still needed. –LPfi (talk) 15:16, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
Thank you Diannaa - we have decided to remove all the images and simply display text relating to her work and exhibitions. MDA2022 (talk) 17:15, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
@MDA2022: That is really a pity. It is your right of course, but I don't think handling the copyright bureaucracy via VRT would be that big an effort. –LPfi (talk) 19:08, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
It is a shame - this whole process has been quite stressful and very complicated.
We now feel unable to continue with the creation of the page and ask you to kindly delete the draft - I cannot find a process for doing this so am hoping of your kind help once again.
Sincerely
Mr David Azzouz & Mr Mazen Azzouz MDA2022 (talk) 09:47, 3 April 2022 (UTC)
@MDA2022: The process for the files is described at Commons:Volunteer Response Team (VRT), linked several times above. If there is anything on that page you don't understand, or you need further advice, we are happy to help, and so are the VRT volunteers. There is a backlog at VRT, so anything that can be solved publicly without ascertaining identities, should preferably be solved here (or at some other suitable page).
For the Wikipedia article, I have not worked much with Wikipedia in English, but I am sure other people can help you with getting it published in mainspace. The article (or its talk page) needs to show she is "notable" enough; the most relevant criteria I found are in en:Wikipedia:Notability (people)#Creative professionals:
"The person's work (or works) has: (a) become a significant monument, (b) been a substantial part of a significant exhibition, (c) won significant critical attention, or (d) been represented within the permanent collections of several notable galleries or museums."
There are some other criteria that might apply. Check that anything relevant for notability is mentioned in the article or on its talk page. You probably want somebody experienced to check that her notability is shown and that everything else seems OK before trying to get it published; there are at least some stylistic issues that need to be fixed.

Photo copyright

Hi, I downloaded this photo: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ivan_Brezina.png I am the person on photo. In 2000 I ordered the photo to be snapped, did agreement with my friend (who snapped it) and payed for the copyright. So I am not only subject of the foto, but also the legal owner of photo copyright. Few years ago Mediahub web did an interview with me. They asked me for some snaps, so I send them above mentioned photo and they used it as an illustration for the interview. And that is problem now - today after downloading I was accused of copyright violation, because my photo is already used at Mediahub web. As you can see, that is completely absurd accusation. Can you kindly change it? I would like use my photo at my Wiki page, but it refused it, because of "copyright violation". • @MichalWojciechowska: Believe it or not, there might be copyright issues. What country, and do you know who the photographer was? - Jmabel ! talk 21:34, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
Based on the username, I guess Poland, which should have similar copyright rules to Czech Republic (which is where I am from). 1930 was over 80 years ago, but it depends on when the photographer perished (I don't think the photographer will be still alive, that would mean the photographer would be well over 100 years old). I'm not sure what copyright status was for photos made in 1930s in Poland. I guess COM:POLAND would tell more.
Especially the Retroactive changes, which specifically mentions photographs:
    • According to the Article 21 of the Copyright law of March 29, 1926 (valid until 1952) photographs lost copyright protection ten years after the picture was taken. Series of scientific or artistic pictures lost copyright protection after 50 years.
    • According to Article 27 of the Copyright law of July 10, 1952 (valid until May 23, 1994) photographs and series of photographs lost copyright protection ten years after their publication date.
    • However, the retroactive Polish Copyright Law of February 4, 1994, Article 124, put all those images back under copyright protection for 50 years since the death of the author.
    • An amendment passed in late 2002, effective January 1, 2003, retroactively extended terms to 70 years after the death of an author.
So it all depends on when the photographer died. If it was 70+ years from now, the photograph is in Public Domain now.
Of course, I'm not entirely sure the person who originally asked is Polish, but it seems like they would be. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 05:41, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

translation of a map

I found the map of the roman via Augusta in the spanish page was written in catalan, so I downloaded it and translate to spanish. How can I upload it? Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rakidip (talk • contribs) 05:13, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

You can upload it as any file. The link in the left margin at Commons, which leads to the Upload Wizard, is probably the easiest way. You might want to use a similar filename, such as File:Mapa de la Via Augusta-es.svg. Link the former map in the source field ("Own translation of File:Mapa de la Via Augusta.svg" or similar). Use the same licence (as the map uses a "share alike" licence). Also add your file to the "other versions" line of the original.
There may be a specific template for translations. There are at least {{Derived from}} and {{Own based}}, which could be used, but as long as you give the information in any format, others can refine the description afterwards. The templates have the advantage that they handle translation to the reader's language, but Spanish and English are both well enough understood that it is a minor issue for this map.
LPfi (talk) 06:36, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
It seems the original version is actually French. Also, there is a Commons:SVG Translate tool that edits the original SVG and adds switch powered translations to it. It should be noted that original language should be still included as a translation. The implied language doesn't use any kind of language code, implied language is kept only for legacy reasons for renderers that do not support the language selection. I'm not sure if the tool does include original language as a translation automatically, when you choose the original language it is in, for a good measure just translate to the same language and just copy the text fields. That only applies to editable text though. If the text is not saved as a text, and instead is saved as paths, then the only way to translate the SVG is to use an external tool and painstakingly replace the text with translated portions. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 06:59, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
Wow! That's nice.
One feature request would be to allow choosing language to be shown in a certain context. For example a map on a part of Italy with no names specific to the language of the Wikipedia should be shown in Italian, not in English. Now, if one place name in the map has an English name, it needs to have identical translations into 200 languages to show the Italian names. –LPfi (talk) 07:27, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
For this map, the tool complains that it "contains unsupported SVG (nested tspan in #tspan6431)", so it seems the solution I outlined above should still be used, perhaps with File:Via Augusta map-es.svg as name. –LPfi (talk) 07:32, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

Deletion of File:Samsung Galaxy A40 (SM-A405F).jpg

My image (File:Samsung Galaxy A40 (SM-A405F).jpg) was deleted for containing a screenshot of copyrighted software (understandable, I should have changed the copyright section) and for being plagiarized from https://onerepair.dk/samsung-galaxy-a40/ (as shown on my user talk page), this is not true and was likely the result of a quick reverse image search, if you compare my image you can see the wallpaper is in a slightly different position and there is dust in the speaker of the phone not present in that website's image as theirs is a 3d render and not an actual photo. Any help with undeleting this image if possible would be appreciated. Thanks. RealNZZN (talk) 20:25, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

Hi RealNZZN. You can try explaining things to the administrator who deleted the file and see what they suggest. Perhaps they will advise you to start a COM:DRV to allow the matter to be reviewed and discussed. However, if the original screenshot is protected by copyright, then it's likely not going to be OK to uoload to Commons per COM:SCREENSHOT and COM:DW without the software developer's (assuming that's the copyirght holder) COM:CONSENT even if the photo you uploaded was mistakenly deleted as a copyvio. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:05, 6 April 2022 (UTC)

I have disagreements with the photographer (T Gordon Cheng) about whether need to add Category:Platform at Tamsui Station on this file File:Train at Platform, Tamsui Station 2020-11-13.jpg. Photo's

Hi there, I am currently writing an article about Japanese-Canadian Author Sally Ito, all the images I can find seem to be licensed. Am I able to use a picture of one of her publications covers? Or would I have to take that image myself? If I write the author and get permission to use these images am I able to use them or do they have to be unlicensed for general use? Kgn.wht (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kgn.wht (talk • contribs) 20:59, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

The copyright for any image belongs to the photographer. Therefore Sally Ito cannot issue a permission to use her photos. Ruslik (talk) 20:48, 5 April 2022 (UTC)
Hi Kgn.wht. Ideally, the best thing would be for you to take a photo of Ito yourself and then for you to upload that photo to Commons as you, or to have someone else do the same and then have them upload it Commons as COM:Own work; that, however, might be much easier said than done. As Ruslik points out, you cannot upload a photo taken by anyone else without either having them email their COM:CONSENT to the Wikimedia Volunteer Response Team or being able to demonstrate that the copyright holder has previously released the photo under a free license that Commons accepts. In pretty much all cases, the copyright holder of a photo is going to be the photographer who takes it, and not the subject of the photo. So, unless Ito can clearly demonstrate that she owns the copyright the photo you want to upload, her permission is not really going to matter. My guess is that the publisher of Ito's work is likely going to at least share in the copyright of any cover art of that work; so, their consent is most likely going to be needed for Commons to accept such a photo. Moreover, you can't simply take a photo yourself of one of her publications (e.g. a photo of a book cover) because that would likely be considered a derivative work or slavish reproduction depending on the nature of the photo you take, and the copyright of the publication's cover would need to also considered. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:59, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
I just want to point out that VRT is not the only, or even necessarily the best, way for someone to indicate that they are licensing a picture appropriately for Commons. If they have a web site or page (e.g. on Flickr) that is clearly under their control, they can indicate the license there. (Of course, this only works easily if it is clear that they are the photographer and copyright-holder; e.g. if there has been a transfer of copyright, that generally has to go through VRT). And, of course, they can start an account upload their own work to Commons, just like you or I. - 03:36, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
Yes, this is correct and thank you for clarifying. I thought my linking to COM:EVID kind of covered that, but perhaps it would've been better to link to COM:VRT#When contacting VRT is unnecessary instead or even better just posting what you posted. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:20, 6 April 2022 (UTC)

@Jerbear318: probably the best starting point is Help:SVG. Most likely you would want to start with someone else's free-licensed SVG map of the relevant CD and only have to deal with changing colors. - Jmabel ! talk 03:39, 6 April 2022 (UTC)

Muchas gracias. Tere CP

Sports Illustrated photos

Hi, I just need some advice as to whether pre-1964 editions of sports illustrated are protected by copyright on their photographs? I don't see any specific notices on the photos and with pre-64, as I understand, a notice would have had to have been provided and renewed in reasonable time. I can't seem to find anything relating to this though, so would appreciate some pointers. I could only see that associated press photos from this period are all PD but this doesn't necessarily apply to SI photos. Thanks. Bungle (talkcontribs) 21:30, 6 April 2022 (UTC)

  • @Bungle: A magazine would not have marked each photo with an explicit copyright then any more than now. They would have a single indication of copyright covering the whole magazine. - Jmabel ! talk 21:36, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Which is fair enough, but is it known whether sports illustrated imagery is likely to be PD or otherwise available? If I understand correctly, without knowing this, then it would have to be the case that any copyright was renewed as they would predate 1964, which is typically unlikely, but I hoped maybe (like with associated press) there was a wider understanding pre-existing. Bungle (talkcontribs) 21:42, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
If you can find instances of the photo being first published prior to appearing in Sports Illustrated and these are PD or otherwise released under a free license, then I think that would take precedence over a claim of copyright ownership attributed to SI. However, that needs to be clearly established and it can't just be assumed to be a possibility. If the photos were first published in SI then I don't believe "no notice" or "not renewed" would apply to them because my understanding is that only advertisements appearing in print publications were required to have clearly visible copyright notices at that time; everything else in the publication was covered by the copyright notice for the publication itself. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:27, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
You're right on that of course. I was just assuming that either SI or its parent company would've renewed its copyrights on old issues, but of course it's possible neither did. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:36, 7 April 2022 (UTC)
When in doubt for a periodical, look at https://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/cce/firstperiod.html . For Sports illustrated, https://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/webbin/cinfo/sportsillustrated , the site says that the first renewal was for volume 1, number 1. It's possible there's later issues that weren't renewed--Weird Tales, for example, was very patching with their renewals--but you'd have to check that yourself.--Prosfilaes (talk) 02:39, 7 April 2022 (UTC)
Thanks both. This does of course rely on SI holding all the copyright for the featured images too, I guess. It's quite a minefield trying to figure that out and even then, how could you be totally sure? The fact the first volume seems to be renewed implies they were aware of the need to do so, which gives me less hope for later editions. Wish there was an easier way of checking! Bungle (talkcontribs) 20:05, 7 April 2022 (UTC)
There are gaps in the renewals of Time. Someone made a list. See Template:PD-US-not renewed-TIME/PD issues. Mostly in the early years but also occasionally in years up to 1963. For Sports Illustrated, you'd have to search. With luck, you might find some public domain issues, or not. There could also be discussions in the archives of the Village Pump. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:38, 7 April 2022 (UTC)

What is the difference between "Graduation cap" and "Graduation hat"?

This confuses me because the title of the category on Commons don't match the title of the article on Wikipedia.--Kai3952 (talk) 12:07, 7 April 2022 (UTC)

That might be something to ask either at en:Wikipedia:Reference desk or at en:Talk:Square academic cap. The difference might simply be related to the national variety of English respectively used when the category was created and when the article was created. The words seem interchangeable to me, though cap is more in accordance with the "cap and gown" that is generally associated with graduation wear. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:38, 7 April 2022 (UTC)

fclm.ru

Which license does this site use for its photos? Are they avaible under one of our compatible licenses? If so, can anyone create its template concerning the license (one like Template:FC-Zenit.ru)? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dr Salvus (talk • contribs) 22:04, 7 April 2022 (UTC)

If you look at the English version of the site and scroll all the way down to the bottom, there appears to be a copyright notice written in Russian which states:"© 1999-2022 FCLM.EN Football club "Lokomotiv", Moscow With full or partial use of materials, a link to the official website of FC "Lokomotiv" is mandatory." The translation site I used might not be the best, but it at least appears that the content of the website is licensed in a way that Commons doesn't accept. The same notice also appears at the bottom of the main Russian version of the site. Given that it's an official website of a professional soccer team, it would seem unlikely (not impossible, but unlikely) that the team would be releasing its original content under a free license that Commons accepts. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:31, 7 April 2022 (UTC)

What makes you think it is public domain? UK publication from 1960 is not old enough to be automatically PD. See Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United Kingdom for details. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 18:36, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
Thanks! 24may1819 (talk) 14:33, 8 April 2022 (UTC)
Hi 24may1819. Is it possible that you're mistaking something being "publicly available" as being "within the public domain"? "Public domain" has a specific meaning when it comes to copyright matters and this meaning can vary (sometimes quite a bit) from country to country. There's nothing in the source url you provided for the image which clearly states the content is PD; so, perhaps you can clarify why you feel it is as Infrogmation of New Orleans asked above. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:36, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
Hmm I see! In that case, if the Playhouse were to give permission for this image to be used, that would be acceptable? 24may1819 (talk) 14:34, 8 April 2022 (UTC)
@24may1819: If the Playhouse is the the copyright holder of the publication and you can obtain their COM:CONSENT, then it could possibly be OK to upload the photo to Commons. I say possibly because I think that would depend upon whether the photo was first published by Playhouse. If, for example, the photo didn't originate with the Playhouse and was previously published somewhere else, then I believe that would take precedence over any claim of copyright made by the Playhouse. Tracking all of that down might be a bit hard which means that it might be better to see if you can find another image of Settle whose provenance and date of first publication can be more easily established so that its copyright status can be more easily verified if you wish to upload the photo to Commons. There is, however, another possibility that might work as well and that would be to upload the photo locally as non-free content to English Wikipedia per item #10 of generally acceptable types of non-free image use . Such a thing is sometimes allowed when the image is of a deceased person and there are no free equivalent images that can be found or created that would serve the same encyclopedic purpose. Non-free content use, though, is very heavily restricted and the relevant policy can be tricky to navigate; so, you might want to ask about this image at en:Wikipedia talk:Non-free content or at en:Wikipedia:Media copyright questions first to see what some others might think before trying to upload the file. Just for reference, files uploaded to Commons are often referred to as "global files" because they are licensed in way that makes them rather to use easily on all Wikimedia Foundation projects, whereas files uploaded locally to a particular project are often referred to as "local files" because they can only be used on that particular project and can be licensed in a way that is unacceptable for Commons. On English Wikipedia, you may see lots of images being used, and thus it easy to just assume they all come from English Wikipedia and they all are licensed the same. You need to actually click on the image itself to see where it's been uploaded and how it's been licensed because and how it's licensed is going to largely determine how it can be used. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:00, 8 April 2022 (UTC)

This means that the photos are licensed under a CC BY ND NC license, and we cannot use files with this license. Why are there still photos from this website? --Dr Salvus (talk) 07:13, 8 April 2022 (UTC)

It does not mean that the photos are under a CC license. They are under the license described on the site. There can be several possible reasons for the presence of the photos on Commons. In this case, the main reason is probably the permission in ticket 2006111410007364 used in the template:Presidenza della Repubblica. You can ask on the page Commons:Volunteer Response Team/Noticeboard if you want details about the conditions that a photo must meet to use that permission. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:10, 8 April 2022 (UTC)

I am trying to update the logo on a radio station entry for a radio station I own. I keep getting an error message that my image is not acceptable. What am I doing wrong? I uploaded the previous logo last year without incident. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Newsguyla (talk • contribs) 18:47, 8 April 2022 (UTC)

It seems you succeeded in uploading the logo File:93.7NRG LOGO.png when using the Upload Wizard at Commons instead of uploading it while editing Wikipedia. The filter is more strict at Wikipedias, because people there usually have less understanding of copyright than people here. You could do the same with the other versions.
This kind of logo cannot be kept unless we get permission for the licence from the copyright owner (so the filter did what it was supposed to do). If you own the copyright, either mention the licence on the radio station's web pages and link to a page that makes clear the licence applies to the logo, or send e-mail from an address of the station according to the instructions at Commons:VRT.
LPfi (talk) 20:25, 8 April 2022 (UTC)
@Newsguyla: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload png and smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg logos as a new user. Such uploads of png logos are not allowed at all. You indicated each is your own work. Usually when someone uploads a logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to publish the logo and your permission for it on your official website or social media or send them via VRT. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the logos may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. See also COM:SIGN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:22, 8 April 2022 (UTC)

You mean searching for a specific external link leading to offsite place? I would suggest fulltext Special:Search and enter desired http(s):// link in the search box. If you select File namespace, then you could search for specific website in file descriptions only. I don't know about any other way you may achieve this. Brainfart on my behalf, I didn't realize that LinkSearch is literally to find pages with specified external link. It's a basic part of MediaWiki software, so it's available everywhere MW is used, unless that feature is specifically disabled. Doesn't make sense why it would be disabled on WM sites. Photo of a public memorial - can it be uploaded to Commons?

As seen here - Homeland Security Digital Library, an official US Government website...but the photo of the WV (official) Upper Branch Mine Disaster Memorial seen on this HSDL page was taken by the then-Governor of West Virginia, Earl Ray Tomblin (in 2010).

This is the copyright notice for the websiteː https://nps.edu/web/guest/copyright-and-accessibility which states (in part)ː

  • This is an official Department of the Navy (DON) Web site (Government Information Locator Service Number: DOD-TBD-001923).

So this is an official US Government website, therefore the information & images on it are in the Public Domain. and

  • Information from this service may be distributed or copied, subject only to any indicated copyright restrictions and normally accepted procedures for properly crediting sources.

Photos taken by US/Federal employees in the course of their work are public domain in the United States, but this particular photo was taken by the governor of a state. I have tried to find any pertinent copyright/public domain information for photographs taken by a WV state employee but have so far been unsuccessful, so my question now is thisː
Can the photo on the page noted above, taken by a West Virginia State Employee (the Governor of WV in 2010) and then subsequently published on a Federal website...can the photo be uploaded to Commons as a Public Domain photo? Because it sure would be nice to have a photo of the Memorial for en:Upper Big Branch Mine disaster. Shearonink (talk) 06:09, 8 April 2022 (UTC)

@Shearonink: Sorry, no, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it as-is, and have the photographer post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their website or social media presence or send the photo and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:17, 8 April 2022 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Many thanks for your response and I get your point about Commons etc but you sort of didn't answer my question (and, frankly, I am not writing to the former Governor of West Virginia to try to get his permission to use this photo). I am looking for the West Virginia Code or the West Virginia state law that governs state employees' photographs that are taken as part of their employment, that states if these photos are public domain. Or if they are not. Shearonink (talk) 14:34, 8 April 2022 (UTC)
FWIW, very few U.S. states put the works of their employees in the public domain, and even then only if the image/text is created as an integral part of their job. So very unlikely here. - Jmabel ! talk 15:29, 8 April 2022 (UTC)
Yeah, I just wish I could find the WV code/law or WV official statement that exactly says so. Thanks,Shearonink (talk) 20:37, 8 April 2022 (UTC)
@Shearonink: Please note the distinct lack of any WV-related templates at Category:PD-USGov license tags (non-federal). However, I uploaded it to en:File:Upper Big Branch Mine disaster Memorial by Steven Rotsch.jpg and used it in en:Upper Big Branch Mine disaster#Memorial and memorial service for you.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:26, 9 April 2022 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Many thanks for doing that, greatly appreciated. The Memorial stone with all the miners' silhouettes received and continues to receive attention in the news. I was mistaken in thinking that this was a WV State installation - the marker and the Memorial Plaza were paid for by the non-profit group Upper Big Branch Miners Memorial. I could not find if the Miners Memorial group owns the land the Memorial & the Plaza are on (I was thinking it might be owned by the State?) - and how close or how far it is from the actual mine. The Mine itself is shuttered and presently owned by a company called Alpha Natural Resources. Thanks again. Shearonink (talk) 14:19, 9 April 2022 (UTC)
@Shearonink: The minehead is at 37.937256°N 81.543572°W in Montcoal, Raleigh County, West Virginia per the enwiki article. The Memorial Plaza is at 37.983445°N 81.454353°W on Coal River Road in Whitesville, Boone County, West Virginia per this memorial page. They are about 5.82 miles (as the crow flies per Google Earth) or 34 miles (driving per Google Maps) away from each other.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:52, 9 April 2022 (UTC)
In the "other information" field, the sentence "The author of the image has released the photographic work under a free license, or it is in the public domain" is incorrect. A no derivative license is not a free license. It is not even clear if Tomblin could license the photo of Rotsch the way he did, but that's a different problem. In the article section about the monument, a fair use rationale might apply to the commented sculptural work (assuming the commentary is sufficient to justify it), but not to the photographic work of the photographer, which is not the subject of the commentary. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:55, 9 April 2022 (UTC)
@Asclepias CC-BY-ND is free, just not free enough for Commons. It appears that Rotsch runs Tomblin's Flickr account.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:56, 9 April 2022 (UTC)
As far as I can tell, the definition of free license is the same at en.wikipedia and at Commons, and ND licenses can't be used on en.wikipedia more than on Commons. CC BY-ND is not listed in en:Wikipedia:File copyright tags/Free licenses. It is listed in Non-free Creative Commons licenses, with the warning "Do not upload". The principle is also mentioned in en:Wikipedia:File copyright tags: "For a file to be considered free under Wikipedia's Image use policy, the license must permit [...] derivative works." and in en:Wikipedia:Image use policy: "images that are licensed [...] under a license that doesn't allow for the creation of modified/derived works, are unsuitable." The Wikimedia Foundation applies the definition of free license to all its websites with its Licensing Policy, which refers to freedomdefined.org/Definition, which includes as one of the essential elements "the freedom to make changes and improvements, and to distribute derivative works". If Rotsch runs the flickr account, it would solve the other problem, although that doesn't seem specified on the account. Where can that information be found? But it would not solve the problem of the ND license. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:13, 9 April 2022 (UTC)
@Shearonink: In the case of this photo, although the photographer took photos for the governor, the exif information at [3] specifies that the copyright is owned by the photographer. The person to contact for a free license would not be the former governor but the photographer. This looks like his website: [4]. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:55, 9 April 2022 (UTC)

@Difficultly north When you took the photos you held your camera upside down (it is in the EXIF info, you can expand the metadata information on the file description page to see it: "rotated: 180°"). That is no problem. Graphics software reads this information and rotates the image back. Only the wizard ignores this. So, no problem at all. C.Suthorn (talk) 07:49, 9 April 2022 (UTC)

Is there a 'requested images' page?

I don't mean a request for a specific image to be found and uploaded in a suitable format. Rather a place where users can submit concepts/objects in the hope that someone can find or create a freely licensed image of it. I could come up with hundreds of things from Wiktionary that are not even super obscure for which we don't seem to have easily available pictures (e.g., I couldn't find anything to illustrate chef's kiss, although it's very plausible it exists in some image but without that label). 70.172.194.25 05:09, 9 April 2022 (UTC)

Source of an image

Hi everyone! I work on an article on Wikipedia and I want to use some images. I want to upload some, I did in the past but it didn't turn out nice, and I actually wonder about some sources. Instagram, sites eg. magazines or medias that upload photos from fashion events who have taken the pictures themselves or Getty Image, aren't free licensed sources? I mean the don't write anywhere if I can use it or not and if I do so, I guess I have to add the credits and write about them. So, is it OK?

Thank you for your response in advance.Fisforfenia (talk) 15:04, 9 April 2022 (UTC)

This category is a sub-category of category:Ships of Indonesia. Unfortunately I am not able to move this category 'Passenger ships of Indonesia'‎ to the rest of category:Ships of Indonesia, sorted by kind of ships, where Category:Ships of Indonesia starts. Now: {{cathead passenger ships of|Indonesia}}. I don't want to mollest this but a better way to categorise it is to do it like the other ships: [[Category:Ships of Indonesia| Passenger]]. Anyone to help?--Stunteltje (talk) 08:39, 7 April 2022 (UTC)

Much better way would be to edit the template that does the categorization. Done it. I'm not completely sure how that affects the categorization though, because categorization is done automatically by alphabetical order, so it would show up regardless of type specification or not. The template now specifies the type, so categorization should be available to all categories that use that template. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 08:47, 7 April 2022 (UTC)
It didn't work up till now.--Stunteltje (talk) 08:52, 7 April 2022 (UTC)
It really didn't show it up at all? Interesting. Anyway, there was a rogue link to a non-existent page "Passenger" on Commons, fixed it, it now points to Wikipedia. Doesn't change the way it categorizes, it's purely just to fix the red link it was showing. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 09:06, 7 April 2022 (UTC)
No. Solved the problem by useing <nowiki> and adding the usual categories.--Stunteltje (talk) 12:35, 10 April 2022 (UTC)
Here's the thing tho. The template was not only categorizing, it also added description to the page. Now it displays this: {{cathead passenger ships of|Indonesia}}. This is what it should display instead:

Passenger ships of Indonesia include passenger-carrying ships designed, built, or operated in or by Indonesia.

You've managed to fix categorization, but have broken the description. Now, there you have it. What was missing was the leading space in front of Passenger, that caused the wrong categorization. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 05:51, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
Likewise with {{Cathead passenger ships of}}, I also edited {{Cathead passenger ships of the}}, for parity. Both templates now contain correct categorization settings. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 05:55, 11 April 2022 (UTC)

Category nomenclature

I wish to add Category:Compton, Isle of Wight somewhere in the hierarchy beneath Category:Geography of the Isle of Wight, but it does not seem to exactly fit in any of the existing possibilities. Compton is a "place" on the Isle of Wight, but barely a "populated place"; the minimal "populated place" option is "hamlet", and I would not call it even a hamlet. Basically, Compton consists of coastline and open countryside and downland, a section of coastal road, with a farm and two or three other scattered/separated properties lying in the fields, and a car park for beachgoers. Do we have standard nomenclature for this type of place? It is too small to be called a "region". ITookSomePhotos (talk) 19:13, 10 April 2022 (UTC)

@ITookSomePhotos: Peeky44 redirected en:Compton, Isle of Wight to en:List of places on the Isle of Wight#Hamlets and other places in this edit 12:33, 28 November 2008 (UTC), so maybe Category:Other places on the Isle of Wight?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 22:05, 10 April 2022 (UTC)
@ITookSomePhotos: just put in in Geography of the Isle of Wight. it doesnt have to fit into a subcat. otherwise put into "populated places...". on commons, "populated" means inhabited, vs uninhabited places like forests, deserts or Mars. it doesnt mean populous.--RZuo (talk) 09:12, 11 April 2022 (UTC)

Uploading photo of a protest placard

Hi there, I just wanted to check if I can upload a photograph of protest placard that I took while visiting an anti-vaccine mandate protest in Dunedin. The organisers allowed me to take a photo of their placard. Since I didn't create the placard, I am not sure if I can upload it. Just wanted to check. Andykatib 01:41, 11 April 2022 (UTC)

  • @Andykatib: it's really going to depend on whether there is enough to the placard to reach the threshold of originality: is the placard itself complex enough to constitute a copyrightable work? - Jmabel ! talk 02:49, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
    • Hi @Jmabel: , should I upload it and wait to see what other people think? Or is there a way I can send it to you to assess? Cheers. Andykatib 03:09, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
      • @Andykatib: . If you're not really sure whether the placard imagery is protected by copyright per COM:CB#Noticeboards and signs, then you probably shouldn't upload it. Are there any other images of similar placards currently viewable online? If there are and you can provide a link to them, then that might help other assess things. If you've already uploaded the photo to some social media account or other wesbite and can provided a link to that, then that would help too; however, you that will make it easy to guess who you really are out in the real world. Other than that you will probably need to describe the placard. Is it simple text (e.g. "Say no to vacine mandates")? Does it contain any other imagery (e.g photos, symbols)? Is the photo a crowd shot of a bunch of people holding placards or is it entirely focused on the placard itself? Any information you can provide about the photo and the placard could help some determine whether it's OK to upload to Commons. Finally, there are quite a few places called Dunedin and copyright laws can vary quite a bit from country to country; so, if you can clarify which Dunedin, then that would help sort this out too. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:07, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
@Andykatib "The organisers allowed me to take a photo": If the organizers are the owners of the copyright (that would be the creator or anyone the creator transferred the copyright to) and if the organizers permitted any type of use (including commercial), then you can upload the file. But you may be asked for a confirmation by VTR. If you can contact the organizers and they are willing to mail a permission to VTR you are on the save side. @Olympian Xeus: I'm guessing that the special wizard adds a few templates and categories to identify the files. I see that some of the files you uploaded do have those templates and categories. Such as, for example, in the description the template {{Wiki Loves Africa 2022 country|ZM}}, and at the bottom of the page the template {{Wiki Loves Africa 2022}} and the category Category:Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2022 to check. You can probably add the relevant templates and categories to your other files where they may be missing. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:38, 11 April 2022 (UTC)

Uploading my rowing team's logo for their Wikipedia page

Hello, I was wondering whether I could upload my rowing team's logo for their Wikipedia page, as it currently lacks it. I don't know who to contact for permission as the logo is quite old (>80 years old) and I have no clue as to who designed it. I would like to know if I could add it to the wikipedia page even if I have only the permission from the owner of the team. Thank you in advance — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ev276 (talk • contribs) 07:29, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

It depends on whether the logo is licensed under a free license, or is in Public Domain, or is below COM:TOO, or its copyright expired. If none of these are true, then I'm afraid the logo cannot be uploaded to Commons unless the copyright owner is willing to sign a COM:VRT permission to upload it. You can still upload it in a limited resolution to one of Wikipedia that allows COM:FAIRUSE, given you provide a detailed Fair Use rationale to be used in a specific case (a specific article on said Wikipedia). If you don't know who designed it, then you can try to dig deeper on the internet, if you can find anything. Given the fact the logo is over 80 years old gives you a chance the logo's copyright status is expired and is now in Public Domain, but you have to be exactly sure that is the case. Try to dig deep on the internet for the logo designer and maybe you'll find someone who made it. I don't think that the original author is alive yet (after all, it's been over 80 years since it was made), but you may be able to contact his lawyers. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 08:08, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
@Ev276: It is possible that the team assumes it owns the copyright, regardless of whether that's the case legally. Anyway, if you have access to a chronicle of the team, it is quite possible that the author of the logo is mentioned, and if not, it might be out of copyright as an anonymous work: 70 years after creation in most European countries. However, in the USA, copyright for foreign works of that age lasts for 95 years after publication. If your team is in the USA, the logo is probably out of copyright, as copyright probably wasn't renewed, if ever registered. Foreign works got a US copyright as the USA joined the Berne convention, in most cases, and regardless of those formalities. Depending on country, the year of creation or first use ("publication") of the logo may be important. If the logo is still under copyright, you may still be able to use it in a Wikipedia article, based on "fair use". But please, first tell what jurisdiction this is about, and whether the logo is simple enough that it perhaps is not copyrightable at all. –LPfi (talk) 10:45, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
The last bit is talking about TOO, right? Some countries do not interpret it as a threshold rather than "if it is in intelectual property, it shall be copyrighted" (for example Czech Republic). It depends on the jurisdiction of the team. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 10:51, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
Yes. The legal definition may vary, and the threshold as outlined in case law, but the concept is part of the Berne treaty, so it should be comparable. Anyway, the jurisdiction is key to get forward. –LPfi (talk) 10:58, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

Hello,

I follow the U.S. District Judge circuit fairly closely and am hoping to embark on a project of updating judges' photos to their official photos from office. @Cofkebre: Which picture are you asking about? Are you asking about File:Borba neka tamo.jpg? Are you asking about File:Presveta kanta.jpg? Are you asking about some other picture?
"File:Borba neka tamo.jpg" was deleted by a Commons administrator named Túrelio per speedy deletion criterion G3; if you would like more information as to why the file was deleted, you can post a message at User talk:Túrelio and ask. I do, however, suggest you try and keep your message as COM:CIVIL as possible when doing so. If a mistake was made, Túrelio will help you figure things out.
The other file, "File:Presveta kanta.jpg", has not been deleted yet. It's been tagged for speedy deletion per criterion F5 by and administrator named King of Hearts, but it's still there and being used in en:Draft:Andraizam. I'm guess that the reason the file was tagged for speedy deletion is because it can also be seen used online here prior to it being uploaded by you to Commons. This is a problem for Commons because there's no way to know who took the original photo and thus who own the copyright on it. So, if you took this photo, then all you need to do is follow the instructions in the notification template that King of Hearts added to your user talk page. If those instructions are not clear, then you can find pretty much the same information here and consent. Once your copyright ownership of the photo has been verified, the speedy deletion template will be removed from the file. If you're still not sure why "File:Presveta kanta.jpg" has been tagged for speedy deletion, perhaps things will become clearer if you take a look at Commons:But it's my own work!. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:18, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

Is posting a passport against the rules?

I was about to post a Cypriot passport, and then I wondered if posting it was actually allowed. Am I allowed to upload a image of a passport to Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kxeon (talk • contribs) 12:05, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

Is it only the front cover? Then it should be okay, given the copyright conditions that make such photo eligible for Commons. It is a government issued document and therefore depending on copyright rules of given country, it may or may not be subject for copyright protection. However: passports, citizen IDs, driver licenses, etc. are all personal documents issued by government for that person. You cannot upload any photo that contains personal informations. Passports often have personal informations hidden inside the passport that takes a form of a little book, and are only revealed when the passport is opened. Front and back covers do not contain any kind of personal informations, so they should be safe to photograph and upload to Commons, unless the artwork on those covers are subject for copyright protection. Citizen IDs or driver licenses nowadays often take a form of a card where there's no way to hide personal information. If you have an image editing software, you can mask out the photograph of the person, mask out the full name of said person and any other stuff that identifies said person (birthdate, gender, nationality, etc.), leaving just the bare skeleton of the document. However, I would be sceptical if that would be appropriate for Commons. Traditional government issued passports? Front and back covers should be okay. Never upload photographs of personal informations, that's a given. In case of passports, that also includes pages with destination airport and border checkpoint stamps, as that gives out clue where that person travels. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 12:36, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
Oh, ok! Thanks! Kxeon (talk) 12:57, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
You can look at Category:Passports by country for examples of images of passports on Commons. For your question about uploading to Wikipedia, some copyrighted parts of passports may be accepted on the English-language Wikipedia if they qualify for fair use, i.e. if they are necessary to illustrate substantial information about the copyrighted parts in relevant articles. For details, you can ask at en:Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:55, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
You should be careful with personal information, but to never publish photos of personal information? I'd show my passport (or ID) in any shop when using my credit card, and might tell about my voyages on the net. I'd be naïve if I were afraid of CIA or KGB to get to know my gender or date of birth, and many give away that information on social media. So what secrets are there in my passport? If I uploaded mine, I'd do it from an account other than my main one though; I am not sure Google knows the real name connected with my account. –LPfi (talk) 15:44, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
@LPfi: much more concern about identity theft than intelligence agencies. - Jmabel ! talk 18:10, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
Exactly. I'm not concerned about agencies, that's afterall their job and they can get to these informations without even having to scourge the internet. What I'm more concerned about is identity theft from personal informations online. I can choose if I'm willing to post a photo of mine online, but it will be a photo of my choosing. Passport photos are usually following some criteria, you cannot freely choose let's say a photo in sunglasses and bikini underwear. Name? Well, I can choose if I'm willing to tell my name online, or date of my birth, or parts of my living address. But having someone post my personal informations on my passport without my consent? Nope. I guess you could do whatever you like with your own ID (if it isn't violating law specifically), the better outcome would be the photo would be deleted from Commons for violating rules about personal identificating informations, the worse would be the photo would be already sold online for identity theft before it would be deleted from Commons. But you should never upload personal informations of others without their consent online. And especially not on Commons. You can take a picture of let's say a celebrity, and upload it here on Commons if the person agrees with that. But there would be a serious doubt that that person would willingly agree with sharing their ID. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 05:43, 13 April 2022 (UTC)
Of course, you shouldn't upload a scan of a passport information page without making sure the person described has made a conscious decision to allow you to publish it. The question is whether you shouldn't under any circumstances upload yours, or let anybody do it. Am I a fool if I allow uploading the passport scan? There is no information that I can see that most people aren't sharing anyway.
It is a real problem that authorities tell you to hide public information not to get victim of personality theft. There needs to be other ways to prevent it. Anybody grown up with internet should know that it is easy to register a suitable domain name (or social media account) and copy another web site or social media profile there, modifying it as you want. That can be done without knowing any non-public information about the origin. For doing purchases or taking loans in the name of others, well, if the seller or loan giver doesn't check their customer's identity, other than asking about their birth date, then one shouldn't have to worry, just send the invoice back telling that one has nothing to do with the transaction. To go to court they'd need to show evidence they have an agreement with me, not just somebody they believed was me.
LPfi (talk) 07:31, 13 April 2022 (UTC)
Laws are a bit different depending on where do you live. I live in Czech Republic, laws regarding of loans and personal informations are more restrictive, and banks and loan providers are required to verify identity of the loaner. In most cases, all they need is the birth identification number, which consists of the birthday and 4-digit PIN, together they form a kind of unique identificator for a person. Nobody says you cannot publish your own birth identification number online, but you would be fool to do so. Authorities telling people to not publish own personal informations online isn't law enforcement, it's a recommendation, and fairly rightful recommendation to be honest. Publishing someone else's personal information without their consent, that's a crime in its own. I may have my own name and surname visible online (Facebook profile, my websites, my public social profiles, my profile on Wikimedia projects), you may know roughly where I live, you may know my personal email you can write to, but you may never see my actual home address, you may never see my phone number, you may never see complete list of all my relatives online, which many of them wish to remain private, and I gotta respect that wish. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 12:19, 13 April 2022 (UTC)
For information about others, the case is clear, for yourself less so. Authorities telling you to keep your identification number secret is bad, because that gives a social acceptance for confirming your identity using just that code. For a business to be able to identify you based on that code, they must have access to it. Thus a lot of businesses will know it. Over here it is stated on your passport and ID, which you are required to show to get to buy alcohol or tobacco (unless over 30), to get admitted to pubs etc. You cannot choose whom to show it to, without restricting your life severely. Thus e.g. a corrupt bouncer or shop cashier could easily collect that information from hundreds of customers. It simply isn't private information. Likewise with home address, if you buy things on the net (and most people have their address available in public records). For a random person targeting you specifically, it is a bit more difficult, but they could e.g. knock on your door delivering a parcel, and asking for your ID to hand it over. –LPfi (talk) 06:35, 14 April 2022 (UTC)
Well yes, but those employees are actually required to handle these informations by their employer, and only within the constraints of the bussiness itself. They are not allowed to distribute them further, nor sell them. That's illegal. You're wrong saying that it isn't a private information. It is, it's just not as private as many people may think. Most of bussinesses handle these personal informations without any issue, and that is because they're legally required to do so. But they can only use these informations for internal purposes only within their own bussiness, they cannot sell those informations or distribute them otherwise any further. If they did, they would do an illegal thing and potentially contribute to committing a fraud crime. You can do whatever you like with your own personal informations, the worst thing that would happen to you is someone stealing your identity and commiting a fraud as you. But if you somehow get access to someone else's personal informations, you're only allowed to process them within the boundaries set by law. You shall not distribute them further than allowed by your company, which also has to follow laws and has boundaries set by said laws. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 07:46, 14 April 2022 (UTC)
Yes, sorry, indeed they are legally private information. It just isn't well-protected information. If you want to commit fraud, the additional crime of illegally using private information is not a big deal. Of course, if you need to involve other people in your illegal business, it makes the thing a bit harder, but I wouldn't think bouncers, net shop keepers and shop cashiers to be less easily corrupted than people in general, so building a system on trusting them is a very bad choice. Fortunately, I think few of those are corrupted in my country (and seemingly you trust them not to be in yours), which keeps the system afloat, but it is still bad practice security-wise. For Commons, I think starting a business based on fraud requires you to have access to information on more than a few people, so you would need to have a source where you can gather information on many people. Thus I think individual passport photos would not be used, rather you'd break in to net shops or buy the information from people who do. Social media might be targeted if sharing birth day information is common. The information would still be unusable, if only businesses would check your identity by more reliable means (on the net: asymmetric cryptography). –LPfi (talk) 08:09, 14 April 2022 (UTC)
I understand your concerns, and I agree that the system for handling personal informations should be better. But saying personal informations are not private because they're not well protected, that's just not true. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 08:17, 14 April 2022 (UTC)

Request about file

Hi there!! I need some help. I am writing an article about a musician on Wikipedia and I also want to include some photos if it's possible. However, I saw that they need something like a permission to upload but unfortunately I do not have so much free time to do it. So, can I somewhere request about files???

Is this about File:LØREN (amfatb mv).jpg? You will need to contact the copyright owner and ask them to sent a permission to VRT. Very unlikely, that someone else will do it for you. Or are you asking for someone to take a photo? There are pages for picture wishes. Or you can search for an existing image with a free licence. for example at Flickr (many image there have a free licence). --C.Suthorn (talk) 16:57, 15 April 2022 (UTC)

Hi IP 2A02:587:1818:2400:D855:CED1:397C:4485. No, you don’t need to re-upload anything. The files should still be there if they haven’t been deleted for some reason. Did you upload them to Commons using another account? If you did, then log in to that account and at the top of the page you should see a link named “Uploads”. Clicking on that will take you to a page where you can see all of the files you uploaded. Clicking on a file will take you to the file’s page where you be able find the link to the page. The external link (i.e. url address) to the page will be at the top of the page. The internal link to the file is basically it’s file name. There are different ways to add files to Wikipedia pages and you can find out more about that at en:Help:Files. Finally, please don’t post in all capital letters. It won’t make someone help you any faster and many users considered it to be online shouting and not very polite. — Marchjuly (talk) 21:46, 15 April 2022 (UTC)

Scripting help wanted

Gallery pages about artists are a mess. example https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Frans_Post. There is all kinds of irregularities causing unexpected results such as undue line breaks and such. I can do trials and errors for hours deleting spaces, adding them, but I don't have a clue how to really fix this and make it work well. Other issues: 'Oil on Canvas' does not need capitailsation, nor does "oil on panel", etc. I'm not sure where to find the used templates and how to fix them. Most of these gallery pages have been 'work in progress' for over ten years since obviously nobody involved knows how to handle the underlying html and the used templates. All related templates need to be scrutinized carefully. It's a pita to edit these pages, and there are lots of them. I dare to say none of them are without layout issues. Check here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Gallery_pages_of_painters_of_the_Netherlands Can somebody look at this, so laymen can handle the pages in a breeze? Thank you. List of sites

Hi there. Gotta a question. Since I'm new here, I'd like to have something like a list of sites from which I could upload files if it exists something like that or close to that. Also, is there a place where I can suggest some pics to be uploaded? Like a place where I can request a file?? Also, If I find an image that is free licensed can I upload it without sending a permission? I'm talking about this pic. And the pics that write "ability to provide data" doesn't count as free licensed? Anyway, bc I don't know, the list would be really helpful. Thanks in advance. Astronaut photos won't upload

I can't upload any versions of this photo from this university domain to either https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Upload or the url2commons tool. Commons already has a version of this file, File:AS16-118-18879 (21709835851).jpg, but it is at a lower quality than the "med.png" ".png" and ".tif" versions. I want to upload a higher resolution of this photo to take advantage of its excellent original quality. Magnified and cropped with the css script, it could allow me to use one of the earliest astronaut photos of a certain area of the United States.

The commons tool has a whitelist, which apparently this domain is not on. Does anyone know why url2commons doesn't work either?

links that don't work:

The photo's entry is linked on this page: https://tothemoon.ser.asu.edu/search?class=nav-light&page=694

Would it be possible to add "https://tothemoon.ser.asu.edu/data_a70" to the domain whitelist?--Epiphyllumlover (talk) 02:29, 19 April 2022 (UTC)

I guess the domain is not whitelisted as it's not an official site of NASA, which publishes photos in Public Domain. If there are some photos that are not in Public Domain and are not licensed under a free license, then whitelisting it would mean that there might be a potential copyright issue. If a domain is not whitelisted tho, it doesn't automatically mean it's blacklisted. This "March to the Moon" website seems to be an unofficial educational website. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 06:23, 19 April 2022 (UTC)
The about page for March to the Moon states "Digital scans of Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo flight films by NASA (Metric, Panoramic, ALSCC, 70mm Hasselblad, 35mm Nikon and Stellar) in their raw (unprocessed) form are in the public domain and as such are covered by NASA usage policy for still image and computer files (see here)." They claim a copyright on the .png images though, and restrict the license past what commons would allow, which surprises me. I think this claim would not hold up in court. Yet I am most interested in having the raw image (.tif) uploaded to commons because it is has the highest quality.
Could the domain be whitelisted anyway so .tifs could be uploaded directly to commons? How would I go about requesting this?
Somehow many of the other astronaut photos have been added to commons through a database dump. How would I go about requesting a database dump of all the .tif astronaut photos?--Epiphyllumlover (talk) 14:12, 19 April 2022 (UTC)

SVG recreation of someone else's image (CC0)

I just uploaded File:Other_Part_of_Play_Board_which_led_to_win_cash_prize_in_a_TV_game_show_by_Larson.svg, an SVG recreation that I created yesterday of File:Other_Part_of_Play_Board_which_led_to_win_cash_prize_in_a_TV_game_show_by_Larson.jpg, a picture from 2012 and one which did not previously have an SVG version.

I'm somewhat new to doing this so I was wondering if another editor would be happy to look this over to check that I did everything correctly? In particular, I want to make sure that I'm attributing correctly (even though I technically don't need to since it's CC0) and that the date is correct (I currently have the original 2012 date on the SVG page since that's the date of the original work; should it be updated to 2022?).

Thank you! --TheSophera (talk) 12:05, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

I think that looks okay. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 12:51, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
Including the date? The original image was made in 2012, but I made the recreation in 2022. There's only space for one date, though. I just took a look and Template:Information says 'If the file is not a simple copy of the depicted work, the date or year of the creation of the depicted work should be stated rather in the "description" field.', but I can't tell whether this would count as a "simple copy" or not. I'm guessing not - should I make that change? --TheSophera (talk) 19:40, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
As far as I can tell, the SVG doesn't add anything copyrightable, so its date is irrelevant (just like the date of scanning a page from a book). But if for some reason you think it needs to be recorded, there is really no limit to what can go in the date field of {{Information}}. - Jmabel ! talk 21:41, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

Does Wiki Commons require model releases for photos?

I have a question about a photographer uploading a photo to Wikimedia Commons. I have used the upload file wizard before and am very familiar with Creative Commons and copyright and wikipedia rules. I am an editor for Wikipedia and edit articles about living authors. I have spent a lot of time chasing photos and asking photographers to release them under a CC license.

I don't recall if the upload form wizard mentioned anything about needing a model release for uploaded photos. Is it required -- or is it assumed that the photographer or publisher would only upload photos that they have full rights for?

Here are some cases that I'm thinking about:

1)suppose a writer pays a photographer to take a picture. If the photographer is the copyright holder and uses the upload form, is it required to get a release from the person being photographed?

2)suppose a writer is photographed with family or friends. It is unknown who these individuals are (or perhaps they have not been contacted about signing a model release). Is it required that the photographer obtain a model release?

3)suppose a writer is at an event like a conference and has people in the background (and cannot easily be cropped out).

4)an organization pays a photographer to take a photo of a writer for a website or publication for the purpose of publicity. The writer dies. The photographer later wants to upload & release it to Wiki Commons. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Robert J Nagle (talk • contribs) 23:08, 19 April 2022 (UTC)

I don't know how to answer these kinds of questions. I know that the photographer can crop people out of a photo, but sometimes that is not possible. Thanks for your help. Robert J Nagle (talk) 23:05, 19 April 2022 (UTC)

Hi, great question! I think you might be looking for Commons:Photographs of identifiable people. For the three first scenarios, see sections
1) Commons:Photographs of identifiable people#Consent
2) Commons:Photographs of identifiable people#The right of privacy
3) Commons:Photographs of identifiable people#Identification LaTerreACotta (talk) 00:28, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) Hi Robert J Nagel. You might find the information in Commons:Non-copyright restrictions and Commons:Photographs of identifiable people to be helpful with respect to questions #1 and #2. My understanding has always been that Commons's main concern has to do with the copyright status of the file it hosts and whether such files are compatible with general licensing of Commons as a whole. The idea of a "model release" seems related to "Personality rights" and these rights can very quite a bit from country to country; so, you need to make sure you in compliance with laws of wherever you're living and those are separate from Commons.
As for question #3, you might want to take a look at Commons:De minimis. It could depend on how identifiable a person in such a photo is and whether the focus of the photo is considered primarily to be on them.
Finally, question #4 sounds like it's related to en:work for hire and en:copyright transfer agreement. I believe copyright ownership is treated like an asset under the laws of many countries, and the transfer of assets of someone who dies depends on the laws applicable to such things. If a photographer signs away their copyright of a photo to a third-party, I don't believe that copyright reverts back to the photographer upon the "death" of said third-party. If the photographer retained shared copyright ownership of a photo as part of an agreement that they entered into with a third-party, then I believe they will still retain their share with the "heirs" of the third-party that has "died". Copyrights still can be quite valuable even after the original rights owner has died or has gone out of business. So, in the case of an individual, those rights are often be passed on to the individual's estate; in the case of a business, those rights are often sold to a new party or retained by the orginal rights holder. Copyright ownership rights aren't just automatically voided because the copyright holder has "died". -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:58, 20 April 2022 (UTC); [Note: Post edited by Marchjuly to correct a mistake in thre last sentence that significantly affects the meaning of the sentence: change "copyright ownership rights are" to "copyright ownership rights aren't". -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:58, 20 April 2022 (UTC)]
Also: typically, the subject of the photo dying has no bearing on copyright (unless the subject had obtained the copyright, in which case it passes to their heirs). In some countries, it affects personality rights, because certain rights may apply only to living people. - Jmabel ! talk 02:30, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the info. One more question. Does the upload wizard itself contain a checkbox about model release/personality rights? Robert J Nagle (talk) 03:58, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

Copy uploads are not available from this domain.

I have taken the trouble of restoring a terribly yellowed and aged image on Wikipedia so that I could update it. I get the message "Copy uploads are not available from this domain." I don't understand and I cannot find a clear explanation of why not. I assume Wikipedia would not block their own domain, and obviously someone else had no problem uploading the image, so I'm at a loss as to what the problem is. Is it my domain that's the problem? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jasmine093 (talk • contribs) 04:38, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

Hi Jasmine093. If you can give the name of the file, someone might be able to help you. Even though it's hard to tell from just looking at an image in some Wikipedia article, some files are uploaded locally to the various Wikipedia for various reasons. If you're trying to transfer a local file to Commons from one of the Wikipedias, then that might be why you're having problems. If the file meets Transfer a work from another Wikimedia project (or on English Wikipedia en:Wikipedia:Moving files to Commons), then you may have to download it to your computer first before reuploading it to Commons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:39, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

Is this map ineligible for copyright?

Does this map fall under the license PD-ineligible which implies that it is ineligible for copyright and therefore in the public domain because it consists entirely of information that is common property and contains no original authorship? It seems like it was adapted from this file (which is under the Creative Common license). Super ninja2 (talk) 05:09, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

I'd say no, it is not ineligible for coypright. However, it was apparently created using a website called mapchart.net, and on the main page there it says "Created maps are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License" (same in their terms and conditions). So {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} would seem to be an appropriate license tag for that map if you wanted to upload it here. --Rosenzweig τ 13:43, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

Regarding photography of unknown or unreachable artists.

Hello, I am working on a Wikipedia article about a ship, the United States Coast Guard Cutter, the Nano(o)k, and I found an image, yet, I reverse image searched it and found it was only on a single website, which listed absolutely no copyright information, as such, I do not know who took the photograph, and I currently have an open request for such knowledge on the page, in short, I asked the administrator(s?) of the site what the copyright status is, I do not know if they will contact me, yet I doubt they will, seeing as they did not respond to the comment above mine, the only comment on the article. My apologies for any errors or any confusion I may be causing, yet I am slightly rattled from this baffling mystery before me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Markovich Rashkolnikov (talk • contribs) 07:07, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

So what is your question? --Rosenzweig τ 09:34, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
Under the precautionary principle, if we don't know the status, then it doesn't belong on Commons. And, yes, it is frustrating that there are a lot of things for which we can't get a sufficiently free image. - Jmabel ! talk 14:56, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

Death date of artist

I just found a US publication from 1931 full of very nice restorations of extinct animals, drawn by the artist M. Elie Cheverlange[6], and while it would be nice to upload the images here, I can't find the death date of the artist, so I don't know if they are in the public domain. Anyone able to track it down? Another scan of the source can be found here:[7] FunkMonk (talk) 01:25, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

Hi FunkMonk. If the artist mentioned in DC Commisioners Being Done in Oil is the same M. Elie Cheverlange, then they were at least still living as of February 22, 1935. If you look at COM:HIRTLE, it seems the death isn't really relevant for works with a known author first published in the US between January 1, 1927, and December 31, 1977. What seems to matter more is whether the work was published with a copyright notice. If it wasn't published with a copyright notice, then it's possible it would be OK to upload as {{PD-US-no notice}}. If it was published with a copyright notice between Janaury 1, 1927 and December 31, 1963, but that notice wasn't renewed, then it's possible that it would be OK to upload as {{PD-US-not renewed}}. My understanding is that only print advertisements were required to be published with separate individual copyright notices during that time period; other content appearing in print publications bascially was convered by the copyright notice for the publication as a whole. So, rather than DOD of Cheverlange, things could depend on the copyright status of the 1931 publication. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:46, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
I think date of death will always trump any other aspect, no? As long as the artist died more than 70 years ago, the copyright status of the publication itself should be irrelevant. I can't see any copyright renewal in the record sites I know of. FunkMonk (talk) 15:10, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
"I think date of death will always trump any other aspect, no?" In the U.S., for this era, no. A copyrighted 1931 U.S. publication that had its copyright properly renewed will enter the public domain on January 1, 2027 regardless of when the author died. Doesn't matter whether the author died that year or lived into this century. - Jmabel ! talk 17:57, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
So in this case, because I can't find any copyright renewal records, it might be PD? Is anyone able to confirm? FunkMonk (talk) 18:16, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
The BHL assessment is: "Copyright Status: Public domain. The BHL considers that this work is no longer under copyright protection." Given that the publication did have a copyright notice, it seems a good guess that the reason for the assessment is no renewal. So, PD-US-not renewed. Even safer if you did search the renewal records of the relevant years, probably in the periodicals, possibly in the books. You can also add Template:BHL-no known restrictions for good measure. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:11, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
I found out that he was apparently French ("O'Reilly, Patrick; Teissier, Raoul: Tahitiens : répertoire bio-bibliographique de la Polynésie Française. - Paris : Musée de L'homme, 1962" via World Biographical Information System Online) and that he lived in Washington, where he worked for National Geographic in the 1930s and "later joined the staff of the Communicable Disease Center as an illustrator, and subsequently spent several years living in Tahiti." (text snippet from a 1999 book called "The Art of National Geographic: A Century of Illustration" via Google Books, there may be more info about him in there). A HathiTrust search for "Elie Cheverlange" finds books from the 1920s to 1949. Ancestry has some documents, among them shipping lists for ships arriving from France or Tahiti, and apparently he was born in Limoges (France) on 1st September 1876 and applied for social security in the US on 24 April 1946. In the 1940 US census, he is listed as a 64 year old artist living in Washington DC with his 42 year old wife Evalie Cheverlange, who was a framer born in Illinois. An Elie Cheverlange is registered as having died in September 1961 in Hillsborough, Florida, United States, there are obituaries for an Elio (sic) Cheverlange in The Tampa Tribune of September 22, 1961. And here is the picture of the grave of Elie Cheverlange, 1876–1961, in Marti-Colon Cemetery, Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida, USA. I guess that should be conclusive :-) --Rosenzweig τ 22:44, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
Ah, thanks, so he definitely died less than 70 years ago, but per Asclepias, it would appear that there are no longer copyright restrictions on that publication, and I will start uploading images from it, unless there are objections. Thanks for the detective work, guys! FunkMonk (talk) 23:23, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
BTW, the "M." probably stands for "Monsieur", not for a name. Like here in this French legal text from 1929-03-06, apparently some kind of waiver from the Governor of French Polynesia (or so) when he married. This confirms his birth in Limoges on 1876-09-01 as the son of Jean and Marie Flacassier (not sure why the family name is different). His (second?) wife is named Mary E. Anderson here, born in Moline, Illinois 1899-03-05, daughter of Thomas Pollard and Mary Hock. A previous wife husband of hers apparently died in Van Nuys, California on 1926-08-07. --Rosenzweig τ 06:40, 21 April 2022 (UTC)

Image metadata

Why does some of my image not showing the metadata? Vitaium (talk) 10:48, 21 April 2022 (UTC)

@Vitaium: This kind of questions are very much easier to answer if you link the files and tell what you have done.
Of your latest uploads File:Virgate wormwood and caricature-plant near gas station.jpg, File:Green raw bananas.jpg and File:Promethium.jpg lack exif data (you added an "according to exif" comment to the first of these, but perhaps according to your copy?). The banana image had metadata in its older version, but not in the new version uploaded by the mobile app, while File:Female rose-myrtle lappet moth.jpg, also uploaded by the mobile app, has exif data.
At what point did the metadata get missing? Is the metadata there in your copy? Have you edited the file between taking it and uploading?
LPfi (talk) 14:18, 21 April 2022 (UTC)
I've edited the image using a software that causes the image metadata to be lost Vitaium (talk) 14:22, 21 April 2022 (UTC)

I've installed filesMetaData in my global.js page but it doesn't appears. Vitaium (talk) 14:49, 21 April 2022 (UTC)
I don't know that widget, but I assume it does not fetch the metadata from your computer. You might be able to configure the file editing software so that it doesn't remove the exif data, or you could use another tool to save the metadata and readd it before upload. Exiv2 can do that, but if you prefer graphical tools, you need to ask somebody else, or check Commons:Exif#Tools. –LPfi (talk) 16:55, 21 April 2022 (UTC)

google images refined by license types works better than your search bar? why? am i doing something wrong? or do you only have exact match only search bar?

Hi there, I want to use a totally copyright free, free to use, no attribution necessary image of dolly parton.

I searched wikimedia commons for an image of dolly parton and selected the license type 'no restriction' and then 'other' and got 4 and 0 search results respectively.

Then I tried searching through google images, selected 'commercial & other licenses" and i saw this result: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Young-Dolly-Parton.jpg

i clicked on the image and see it says it is a public domain image- yet it didn't show up in my search on wikimedia commons itself even though it's on your website.

So why did it not show up on your search results page? IS there some way to search I am not aware of?

There are some websites like reddit that have a bad search function so it's more effective to search on google for reddit items, and I wonder if it's the same with you? I even tried searching "dolly-parton" on wikimedia commons and nothing showed up, but if i search exactly on wikimedia commons "Young-Dolly-Parton.jpg" i will get the search result...is there a way to turn exact matching only off?

For years I didn't use wikimedia commons bc I thought you didn't have a lot of conent - now I think you have a lot more content than I think - it just doesn't show up in search results so I didn't know it existed. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 104.162.189.197 (talk) 18:02, 21 April 2022 (UTC)

Hi, About the search tools, there is some general information at Help:Searching. There are subtleties for specific searches. You can probably find detailed information at places such as mw:Help:CirrusSearch on Mediawiki, en:Help:Searching and en:Help:Searching/Features, on Wikipedia. But I usually keep it more simple and intuitive. For example, a simple search with the keywords "Dolly Parton" "public domain" returned 41 results with Special:Search and 37 results with MediaSearch. Some results are not photos of her, but it's manageable. It leaves about 20 usable photos. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:23, 21 April 2022 (UTC)
I think the problem with matching licences is a horrible political one. Essentially, Special:MediaSearch is an initiative of the Wikimedia Foundation, who are are in favour of the use of Commons:Structured data. Thus, when deciding what licence a file has, Special:MediaSearch looks only at the structured data of the file, and not at the extended metadata derived from the templates on the page. The Commons community is less enthusiastic about Structured Data than the Foundation is, so while we require every picture to have a copyright tag as a template, we don't require corresponding structured data, and as a result Special:MediaSearch can miss things. I've tested this by adding copyright status (P6216) public domain (Q19652) to File:Young-Dolly-Parton.jpg and now Special:MediaSearch finds it correctly. --bjh21 (talk) 13:19, 22 April 2022 (UTC)

Flickr upload - "The file is a ZIP file"

Hi there, I'm attempting to upload https://www.flickr.com/photos/robinzblog/31119482440/ through the Flickr image tool, and I'm getting an error: "The file is a ZIP file that uses ZIP features not supported by MediaWiki. It cannot be properly checked for security." Any idea what might be causing this issue, and how to fix it? The file is a .jpg. --Prosperosity (talk) 08:14, 22 April 2022 (UTC)

@Prosperosity: While the file is a JPEG file, it's also a valid Zip file containing a one-second MP4 video and a single frame from that video. It looks like this is the "Living Images" feature described in this blog post. MediaWiki doesn't like Zip files embedded in files uploaded here because they can be (and I believe have been) used to smuggle undesirable material through Commons. You can almost certainly fix the problem by loading the file into an image editor and then saving it again, since that is likely to remove the "Living Image". There may be more surgical approaches, but I can't immediately come up with one that works nicely. --bjh21 (talk) 11:45, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
Changing the file extension to ".zip", unzipping with a zip-archiver, should reveal the original files (jpg and mp4). --C.Suthorn (talk) 12:37, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
Thank you! It seems to have worked. --Prosperosity (talk) 21:34, 22 April 2022 (UTC)

Flickr image

Hello,

I would like to ask a Flickr user if they would be willing to change the copyright status of this image (https://www.flickr.com/photos/steveox/50822146281/) to CC-BY or CC-BY-SA for it to be used on a Wikipedia article: w:Russell Martin (footballer). However, I’m not very familiar with the process as I’m not a regular contributor to Commons, and I prefer not to email people I don’t know. I requested help with a similar Flickr image a few years ago, which was successful. Is there someone who could do this for me? Thanks for any help. Doogooder (talk) 07:57, 23 April 2022 (UTC)

@Doogooder: Hi, and welcome. en:WP:ERP#Commons Flickr 1 worked for me in the past.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:21, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
Hello, thank you for the reply. I tried messaging the Flickr user, but it's prompting me to create a Flickr account before I can message, and I'm not keen on creating an account.
I have written the message I would like to send. I based it on the template you suggested, and en:WP:ERP#Short Flickr image request . Should the licence be 2.0 or 4.0? I'm not sure what Flickr uses.
"Dear Mr. Daniels,
I am a volunteer editor from Wikipedia. I am working on the Russell Martin (footballer) article and am seeking a relatively recent image of the individual to use in the article. I came across your image (https://www.flickr.com/photos/steveox/50822146281/) which I think would benefit the article.
Would you be willing to license the image either under the Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY 2.0) or Attribution-ShareAlike license (CC-BY-SA 2.0)? Wikipedia accepts only freely-licensed pictures like those with Creative Commons "Attribution" and "ShareAlike" licenses. These licenses expressly protect creators from being considered responsible for modifications made by others, while ensuring that creators are credited for their work.
The contents of the CC-BY and CC-BY-SA licenses can be found at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/ and https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/ respectively.
The Wikipedia article can be found at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell_Martin_(footballer)
If you are willing to contribute your image under either CC-BY or CC-BY-SA, you can change the license by:
1. Going to the image's Flickr page
2. Under the "Taken" date, clicking on the currently applied license and selecting "Attribution" or "Attribution-ShareAlike".
With your permission, we will credit you for your work in the image's permanent description page, noting that it is your work and is used with your permission, and we will provide a link back to your Flickr profile or website. Please explicitly state under which license you grant permission.
Please be assured that if permission is not granted, we will not use your image — we have a very strict policy against copyright violations.
Many thanks for your time; I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards"
Is a Commons contributor with a Flickr account able to send this to the Flickr user? Apologies for complicating the process. I am grateful for any help. Doogooder (talk) 18:07, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
  • @Doogooder: Flickr offers CC-BY-SA 2.0, but not CC-BY-SA 4.0.
  • I believe you can easily set up a free Flickr account I send this yourself. It may lead to further correspondence, so it is not easy for someone to do this for you.

Are video game mobs copyright violation

I uploaded two minecraft files — Preceding unsigned comment added by Peyton Dodson 4 (talk • contribs) 00:22, 25 April 2022 (UTC)

Hi Peyton Dodson 4. Most video game screenshots are going to be considered to be protected by copyright as explained in Commons:Screenshots unless the original game itself is either not eligible or no longer eligible for copyright protection (i.e. it's within the public domain) or it has been released under a free license acceptable to Commons. Moreover, even though you might have purchased a copy of the game and thus "own" a physical copy of it, the intellectual property rights (i.e. copyrights) associated with the game are most likely retained by the game's creator or the company that produces the game. Since most commerical video games have lots of value to their creators, it's unlikely that screenshots from a game like en:Minecraft are going to be OK to upload to Commons without the consent of game's creator. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:38, 25 April 2022 (UTC)

That webpage has a copyright notice on it, so unless you are able to find other information about the image's origin it can't be uploaded to Commons. You may be able to upload it under a claim of fair use on an individual project, depending on local rules, for example, the English Wikipedia's policy is here. Beeblebrox (talk) 05:43, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
You can try to find the original source of the photograph and as much available information as possible about it. For example, with an image search, it is found that the image possibly comes from the Biblioteca comunale dell'Archiginnasio, more specifically from this fonds. From the search page, a search with appropriate keywords gets to this page and this image with the portrait. It can be seen that this copy does not include information about the original source nor the photographer. Archived with this copy of the portrait are handwritten notes and a copy of a biographical article originally from p. 112 of this publication, but that is not the source of the portrait. It is possible that the portrait was published with one of the works by Ungarelli. You could look at them. You could contact the library and ask if they know anything more about that portrait. After more research, if still no information, you can try to estimate the year of creation. Perhaps the 1910s? It looks like a professional portrait, so it probably cannot use the short copyright of PD-Italy for ordinary photos. And the year of creation may be a little too late for PD-old-assumed. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:36, 24 April 2022 (UTC)

See commons:File_requests#Images_at_EOL. There was green light for the upload. I have to complain, as my request to clear the licence question in advance and if ok perform the upload was not fullfilled. I am sorry. --Ernsts (talk) 21:59, 25 April 2022 (UTC)

  • @Ernsts: On that page, you left the licensing section blank, so it should be no surprise that someone says the file does not have sufficient information on its copyright status. Since it is pre-1900, I'll add {{PD-old-assumed}}, but if you have something more definitive please substitute that. - Jmabel ! talk 23:04, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
    • Thank you. I already did quite a lot internet research in order to get birth an death date of tha author. Unfortunately there are several people with the same name and also given name. So I was not successful. I do not remember if this was the reason why I left the fieldd blank, or because I did not know the correct template ({{PD-old-assumed}}), or if it was just by accident. Baecause of this I'm afraid I cannot help to improve the licence info. --Ernsts (talk) 21:46, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
At the bottom of the uncropped image at the source, what does the mention "Artist. Anst v. Th. Fischer" mean? Is it that the artwork is by an anonymous artist working for the publisher Theodor Fischer? -- Asclepias (talk) 23:08, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
The abbreviation means "Artistische Anstalt von Theodor Fischer" i.e. Theodor Fischer's artistic institution. That is not the publisher but a sort of graphical workshop which would create such illustrations as lithographies from black and white photographs or from original drawings of the researcher. So, in the end the executive artist that created the final image is anonymous. De728631 (talk) 01:03, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
Very interesting, thank you. So, that Artistische Anstalt probably bears the name of this Theodor Fischer: [8]. -- Asclepias (talk) 06:05, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
Yes, that seems to be the one. Thank you for looking it up. ~~

G'day

Couldn't find anywhere that a site user could suggest an edit, rather than edit themselves. The following should illustrate the issue:

On this page: Commons:Featured pictures/Astronomy

the planets, dwarf planets, asteroids, stars etc. are pictured. It would be understandable to not show every asteroid or star but why, in showing the planets of our solar system is there no Uranus?

Picture deleted

How can I return all pictures that were deleted? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Somsinsrp (talk • contribs) 03:53, 28 April 2022 (UTC)

Somsinsrp, you can request the undeletion of your files on Commons:Undeletion requests only if you think the files were deleted in error. Files deleted as copyright violations and those out of scope won't be restored. Thanks. Hulged (talk) 04:09, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
And just for example: you can't go to Hello magazine's site, snag a picture, claim it as your own work and say you are offering a cc-by-sa-4.0 license. Doing something like that makes me, for one, suspicious of all of your uploads. - Jmabel ! talk 14:48, 28 April 2022 (UTC)

Broken thumbnails for video

I just tried to upload a video for the first time using the UploadWizard. The video uses the AV1 codec and WebM container format (there is no audio). The upload was successful, and the video can be played without problems, but all of the thumbnail images are broken and do not render at all. I tried to purge them and use the “regenerate thumbnails” function, but it doesn’t appear to work. What am I doing wrong? File:Drehweiche_EP-Express.webm ― --Winof (talk) 16:25, 13 April 2022 (UTC)

You could upload a version with VP9 codec as test above the existing file. If the thumbnails then appear, it may be due to the codec. AV1 does not have a real advantage, as users usually see a version of the video transcoded to VP9. Only when downloading the video or setting "original webm" in the media viewer is the AV1 version actually delivered. And although it is smaller than the VP9 version with the same quality, that's it.. --C.Suthorn (talk) 17:03, 13 April 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the hint. So you think it’s a bug, and I didn’t do anything wrong? In that case I’ll leave it as is. I guess the bug will be fixed sooner or later, as the AV1 codec is becoming more popular. --Winof (talk) 17:34, 13 April 2022 (UTC)
Definitly not your fault. But I would not wait for it to be fixed. This broken thumb has not been fixed for 21 month. --C.Suthorn (talk) 19:47, 13 April 2022 (UTC)
But that one has VP9 video, not AV1, so the problem doesn’t seem to be related to the codec. --Winof (talk) 21:41, 13 April 2022 (UTC)
Chronology of WebM-Uploads by codec. Yellow=VP8, Blue=VP9, Green=AV1

Following up to my initial question ... I tried to find other AV1 video uploads, to no avail. Am I the first one to upload a video using the AV1 codec? I can't believe that. AV1 is clearly mentioned as a supported codec on the Wikimedia help pages, and it is mentioned to be superior to VP8/VP9, so I wonder why almost everyone (except me) still uses VP8/VP9. If AV1 still has certain bugs when used on Wikimedia Commons (and if they're not going to be fixed shortly), such as broken thumbnail images, then this should be mentioned on the help pages and on the upload facilities (such as the upload wizard). --Winof (talk) 10:17, 14 April 2022 (UTC)

Category:AOMedia_Video_1 --C.Suthorn (talk) 20:41, 14 April 2022 (UTC)
Well, I discovered that category before ― however, it only contains files about the AV1 codec, but no videos that actually use the AV1 codec. --Winof (talk) 12:08, 15 April 2022 (UTC)
PS: I’ll probably create a new file using the older VP9 codec, and ask for deletion of the old one (it has a wrong title anyway). Will take some time, though, because I need to compile my version of ffmpeg with VP9 support. This is annoying … I just compiled it with AV1 support specifically for Wikimedia Commons, because normally I use h.265 (a.k.a. HEVC) for everything else. I still think there should be a warning on the help pages and on the upload wizard, stating that AV1 is currently not correctly supported. That would have saved me a lot of time. --Winof (talk) 12:18, 15 April 2022 (UTC)
You can change the filename with "move". And you can do a revision upload on the existing file with the rillke script (linked on the descripition page). But you should not have the existing one deleted. --C.Suthorn (talk) 14:01, 15 April 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for your assistance. I did as you advised, and now the thumbnail images appear to work, indeed. I can’t believe I’m the first one to upload an AV1 video … What do I have to do in order to bring this problem to the attention of someone who can either fix it or add a warning to the help pages and to the upload tools? I spent quite a lot of time with all of this, just to find out that AV1 is broken with Wikimedia Commons. This is frustrating and doesn’t really motivate me to contribute more. --Winof (talk) 09:13, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
I tried to create an AV1 long ago, but ffmpeg's AV1 encoder would have needed over a year for the encoding. You can upvote the Phabricator ticket (linked in this section in the upper right corner. You will need to OAUTH your wiki account for that). Probably the most promising thing to do. --C.Suthorn (talk) 11:07, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for pointing me to Phabricator. I’m new to this. As far as ffmpeg is concerned, I recommend building it with the SVT-AV1 library (libsvtav1). It is more optimized for speed than the AV1 reference code from AOM. I’ve done some research and testing to find a set of options that gives me almost the same speed, quality and file size as with the H.265 codec (a.k.a. HEVC) that I normally use for everything. Actually, VP9 is much worse. In order to get nearly the same quality, ffmpeg takes a lot longer for encoding (about five times slower with the settings that I use), and the files are still considerably larger. --Winof (talk) 10:22, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
Would you add the info on options for AV1 to Help:Converting_video#Linux_and_OS_X_command_line? Also it would be helpful if someone updates the page and also Commons:Video ("There are roughly 135,000 video files on Commons." -> it is more like 120K WebM, and 80K ogg-video (ogv and ogg, and 2M ogg-audio (oga and ogg)). --C.Suthorn (talk) 17:42, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
Looks like the linked Phabricator task is closed as duplicate. T296562 seems to be the original. So user:Winof probably isn't the first one to upload with AV1 codec, but appears to be the first one since previous uploads were most likely testing uploads to see if it works correctly, or the files were deleted because of this bug. The bug report is still open, marked as low priority as it seems. I awarded it with "Like" token, as I couldn't find any upvote/downvote thing in Phabricator. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 12:49, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
Sooner or later YouTube will change from VP9 to AV1. As many Videos on commons are imported from YouTube at exactly the point in time the phab task will change from "low priority" to "super nova". --C.Suthorn (talk) 17:42, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
I see. If YouTube is using VP9 at the moment and will be switching to AV1 soon (does that mean older videos are going to be processed once again?), then I guess that will make the bug report quite important. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 05:12, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
New uploads to YouTube are more likely to be imported to Commons than older one's, as older one's are either out of scope for commons or probably already imported to Commons. --C.Suthorn (talk) 10:00, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
YouTube is already able to deliver AV1 if you’re using a supported browser + OS combination. I think this is currently still beta, though (I’m not 100 % up-to-date on this), so you might have to enable it in your user preferences. --Winof (talk) 08:23, 29 April 2022 (UTC)

Is this Photo c1927 Royalty Free?

The Asahi Shimbun has a photo of the Kure Naval Arsenal. The description says it was taken at the beginning of the Showa era which is between 1926-1927. In the bottom of the page it says Copyright Asahi Shimbun, no reproduction or republication without written permission. However, if it was made in 1927 then the copyright has expired. -Artanisen (talk) 15:45, 25 April 2022 (UTC)

@Artanisen: Hi, and welcome. Please see COM:JAPAN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:55, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
Hi, I don't know the author's name or maybe it is Asahi Shimbun. This is an old photograph. The date of creation is before December 31, 1946. That means PD-Japan-oldphoto. Is this correct? -Artanisen (talk) 16:06, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
Asahi Shimbun is not the author, it is a newspaper (the name basically means "evening news"). - Jmabel ! talk 21:28, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
Yes, it's a Japanese newspaper. I mean maybe someone of Asahi Shimbun took the photo. Actually it means 'morning sun newspaper'. That doesn't answer my main question though. -Artanisen (talk) 04:47, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
Oops. So much for my scant traces of Japanese. Outside of terms relating to sashimi and the game of go, I'm pretty helpless. - Jmabel ! talk 15:43, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
@Artanisen: So I've read through the page and it seems like the copyright should be expired, by the informations. But beware of copyright extension, copyright can be renewed. Is the page a word for word reproduction of original news article from 1926-1927? Or is it specifically for the photo only? I can't seem to load the page in Chrome, and I don't currently have another browser to try out, all I see is a blank white page. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 10:20, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
EDIT: So I do have another browser, an old Internet Explorer, which did load the page, it is only a photo. I guess the copyright notice is for an entire web, as in the design and current content of the website. You may want to ask them if you can upload the photo on Wikimedia Commons as per public domain with its copyright status expired, just to be absolutely sure. I don't speak Japanese, so I can't read the contents of the page. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 10:27, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
@Polda18 and Artanisen: Some browsers showed me some 62 images are presented on that page, which uses cross-site scripting (the other site being https://www.asahicom.jp). They also showed that the Japanese language text was unrelated to copyright concerns.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:59, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Alright, so it's most likely in the public domain and safe to use on Wiki commons? Artanisen (talk) 19:35, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
@Artanisen: Not without more info about which exact photo, photographer, lifetime, publishing date, etc.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:17, 30 April 2022 (UTC)
Just a clarification: if something is royalty free, that doesn't automatically mean free of charge and free to use. Royalty free just means that whatever you're going to use doesn't require periodical royalty fee payment, but you will most likely have to purchase the license, which then ties your hands in terms of where you can use it. Royalty free is mostly used in music, where you purchase stock of royalty free samples and you can then use them in your YouTube video for example. But you cannot upload them to Commons as they're not free to use. Free of charge also doesn't automatically mean free to use, because something may be free of charge for non-commercial purposes, that's not free to use, and something may be free of charge for everyone, but license isn't compatible with licenses Commons uses, thus that stuff is considered not free to use. What you probably meant is COM:PD (Public Domain). Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 05:19, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
Yes, you're correct, public domain is the correct term. -Artanisen (talk) 06:18, 26 April 2022 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome. What photo?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:07, 30 April 2022 (UTC)
If the photo legally intrudes on your privacy, you can have it deleted without publicity by e-mailing the WMF (I assume ca@wikimedia.org would be the correct address; we'd still get to know it has been deleted, but you'd avoid having some people download it before deletion). If you just don't want to have it here, then ask for a courtesy deletion by the deletion request procedure cited above. You'd need to have a good rationale to get our sympathies, although obvious cases might get that more easily. There is also the issue of knowing whether you really are the subject of the photo.
If the photo you have problems with is bad quality but still used on Wikipedias, you can probably get it replaced there if you upload a better one that you can license in an appropriate way (the copyright of portraits is by default owned by the photographer, so we'd need their permission or evidence of a rights transfer). The previous one might get deleted as redundant, in some cases.

Rotate uploaded pictures

Is it possible to rotate uploaded images? How to do it? Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eacnobre (talk • contribs) 19:46, 30 April 2022 (UTC)

@Eacnobre: Hello. Please sign your contributions to talk pages and discussions like this one by typing four tilde characters ~~~~. This will add your user name and a time stamp for reference.
To rotate an image, you may place a string of code on the file description page here at Commons, e.g. {{rotate|90}}. This will tag the file to be rotated by an automated bot routine with an angle of 90 degrees clockwise. You can also select -90, 180 and 270 degrees, but please note that the rotation will be delayed for a few hours until the bot crawls your particular file. De728631 (talk) 21:25, 30 April 2022 (UTC)
Or you can use the crop tool in lossless mode; just make sure you don't also actually crop, and make sure you overwrite rather than uploading as a new file. - Jmabel ! talk 00:44, 1 May 2022 (UTC)

Uploads

Image uploads haven't been working lately.Sardaka (talk) 09:24, 27 April 2022 (UTC)

@Sardaka: Hi, and welcome. Please be more specific, as Special:Newfiles shows 50 new files in the past 2 minutes.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:16, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
I try to upload an image, the normal upload doesn't work, so I tried the old form and that doesn't work either. Sardaka (talk) 09:30, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
Just tried the old form and got "we can't reach this page." Sardaka (talk) 09:54, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
@Sardaka: Uploading is error prone for years now. You can try with different browsers, with different devices, with different OSs and with different external upload tools. You can also give information about the file (type (jpeg?), size, dimensions, a link to where else the file can be found online, a description of the file contents, the error messages the upload tool gave), that may help. You can open an error task at phabricator. --C.Suthorn (talk) 09:56, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
Have just tried again, but new and old upload wizards are both not working. Can someone fix these things, or do I have to give up on wiki?Sardaka (talk) 10:58, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
Do not wait for the Wizard to be fixed. For most people the Wizard works most of the time. For you it does not, but you do give no information, so no one will be able to help you with a workaround. You can use one of the external upload tools (patty pan, Commonist, ...) --C.Suthorn (talk) 12:08, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
"Doesn't work" does not say much. It could be your not having an internet connection. Is "we can't reach this page." the exact error message? Did you get a Commons page saying so, a Wikimedia error page saying so, or didn't you get a page at all? I tried to search for the phrase here but didn't find it, it also sounds odd as an error message (who's we? why "reach"?). –LPfi (talk) 12:34, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
Upload wizard gives me:None of the uploads were successful "Retry failed uploads". Old upload gives me:"Hmmm...can't reach this page". My uploads have been working for years, why would they stop working now (and the problem is on two computers, so it's not the computer. And again, what is phabricator? Sardaka (talk) 08:34, 30 April 2022 (UTC)
@Sardaka: Phabricator. See also COM:TALK.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:00, 30 April 2022 (UTC)
There may be a transient error, such as if the server is busy. I don't know how that interacts with other factors, so that it might be persistent for you. For me it is common that one or a few of the files didn't upload, but the retry usually works. The underlying issue might be the same with both upload pages. The developers at Phabricator have access to server logs, so they can more easily debug the problem. You might want to read the documentation, try a few new uploads (does it work with a single small file? a few of moderate size? do you have a non-standard configuration? try to get as plain a situation as possible). When you have a clear case, post a bug report (you'd need to register your Wikimedia account at Phabricator). –LPfi (talk) 12:06, 30 April 2022 (UTC)
It's working again. Thanks to everyone who answered (including the tech gods who were obviously watching). Sardaka (talk) 09:00, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
The "tech gods" did not watch. If they do, they watch at phabricator, not here. And they didn't do anything. They might only have done something, if there was a precise error report at phabricator. But most likely not even than. --C.Suthorn (talk) 10:59, 3 May 2022 (UTC)

Arnold Rechberg Lucifer statue location

Hi

Does anyone know where this statue is located and if there are other images of it?

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f8/Arnold_Rechberg_-_Luzifer%2C_Paris_1906.jpg

Thanks

Setken — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 49.185.161.168 (talk) 10:29, 28 April 2022 (UTC)

According to what I can glean, Rechberg was imprisoned in Dachau. He survived the war but died in 1947. I don't have proof, but I would say that puts the chances fairly high that the nazis destroyed this statue, which they almost certainly would have considered "degenerate art". Beeblebrox (talk) 20:42, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
According to "The Gaulois" a French newspaper talking about the the author, the statue was sold at the time to a private unnamed German collector. See here and here. Seem like this work, if not destroyed, was only exposed in Paris at the 1905 Salon and maybe again in 1906 (also in Paris). It's probably the only available image of the work. That said the "Ebay" source for this image is very dubious, this image may originally come instead from an exposition catalog, maybe 1906 this one by Roger-Milès, or a french a newspaper. Provocative images of women on wmf-wikis

putting this here so everyone can see from the getgo what is so very, very provocative about this foul piece of pornography. She's like, old and we can see her arms and everything! Beeblebrox (talk) 19:05, 29 April 2022 (UTC)

I hope this is the correct forum to post this question. I am here as a consumer of images with a dilemma: How does one determine which image to use on a wiki page of a woman?

Here is an example I have noticed : q:Catherine Asaro (also on other wikis) is currently using an image that I assume some readers would consider provocative especially if one looks at this person’s date of birth. When I see such an image on a wiki-page I usually move on to another (more serious/respectable/?) page. Does this type of image minimize a woman's accomplishments?

Just wondering how others feel about this topic. Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 14:07, 28 April 2022 (UTC)

As you demonstrated here you can edit! There is a "less provacative image" that is used in other language versions. So feel free to change the image. It's a Wiki! Sometimes we don't have choices available and use what we have. Perhaps that was the case, when the article was created. Wuselig (talk) 14:55, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
"How others feel": There is nothing provocative. The image is respectable. The image is serious. There is nothing wrong with her age. The image does not minimize accomplishments. --C.Suthorn (talk) 15:31, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
We could still have more images to choose from. The portrait image (uploaded earlier) is low-resolution. Choosing images among those we have on Commons is done on the individual projects, Commons has no say on that. On those projects anyone can change images, but anybody can also change images back, the final choice is made on articles' talk pages. –LPfi (talk) 15:41, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
I cropped out a portrait image from the one in the linked article: File:CatherineAsaro2009 (cropped 1).jpg. Feel free to use that, but you might want to ask on the talk page of the article before you change images. –LPfi (talk) 16:37, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
The cropped file has its merits and it makes a good choice for a drivers license or even as a foto for the wikidata entry. But replacing the original with the cropped version in an article would be disrespectful. As you can see from the other files in the category the jewellery Asaro is wearing is featured in other images of her. Cropping that out in the sole image in an article is not a friendly move to make. --C.Suthorn (talk) 17:11, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
OK. Yes. I hesitated a bit after having uploaded the image, and did not change away the "provocative" image from any article, as it was the one she had made available. I didn't look at the group images you refer to. –LPfi (talk) 17:40, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
I agree with C.Suthorn: There is nothing provocative. It’s completely unclear to me what the problem is with that image. Actually I think it is rather the opposite: To me it feels provocative that you suggest that the image might be provocative. If the person in question has provided the image herself, I would definitely keep it (unless the image was in violation of some Wikimedia rules, but that’s not the case). If I were that person, this discussion here would probably make me feel sad. --Winof (talk) 11:01, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
I think this was not about keeping the image here. For author biographies on Wikipedia, the lead image usually has less of the body shown, so this is unusual, which can be part of why the image was brought up. It might of course be provocative also that a 60+ woman is shown in jeans and top (not 60 in the image, though). –LPfi (talk) 13:31, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
I agree 100% with Winof's remarks. If this were an older man in a sleveless t-shirt and jeans we would not be having this discussion. Beeblebrox (talk) 18:54, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
@Winof,@Beeblebrox@C.Suthorn:
I have not seen similar images of, say, Angela Merkel, and would be surprised if any turned up on wmf-projects, wouldn't you? BTW I did not know that the photo was supplied by Ms. Asaro herself (not sure where to find this type of info on commons). Ottawahitech (talk) 04:34, 30 April 2022 (UTC)
This foto of Merkel is definitly missing. --C.Suthorn (talk) 05:57, 30 April 2022 (UTC)
Top level politicians often share only photos representative of that role. Unless there happen to be older photos, or somebody can take photos where they are in other roles, such photos will mostly be missing. The role of a writer is significantly different, while some will still try to manage their publicity to conform with a specific image. I assume this image is in line with such an image for her. Although we'd want to have images of Merkel playing as child, Wikipedias wouldn't use those as lead image of her biography article. –LPfi (talk) 11:19, 30 April 2022 (UTC)
@Ottawahitech: Click on the image to get to the file description page (right click instead if you otherwise end up in some WMF image viewer). Her role isn't explicitly told, but in the description field it says "Owner: Catherine Asaro" and in the permission field there is a link to the VRT permission ticket. The former suggests the image might be from her, and the ticket would probably tell that (if you have access). In the upload log, in the entry for the first upload, you can read "Permission email will be sent by Catherine Asaro", which confirms this. The original upload seems to have been to Wikipedia in English, and the original upload blog, quoted on the file description page, says the same.
So yes, it is hard to know her role and intentions for sure, and there is no standard way of telling about them, but they can often be inferred with some level of certainty.

Folks, this is a silly discussion. As soon as I read "provocative especially if one looks at this person’s date of birth", I was done. This, for whatever reason, apparently makes the OP uncomfortable, the very idea that a woman over 50 is permitted to dress any way she wants and be proud of her appearance is "provocative"? No, it just isn't. Let's not give this foolishness any more attention. Beeblebrox (talk) 18:18, 30 April 2022 (UTC)

@Beeblebrox: why is this a "silly discussion"? Do you mean this is not the right forum for my question? Ottawahitech (talk) 14:17, 1 May 2022 (UTC)
It’s for individual projects to decide what image they use to illustrate an article. Malcolmxl5 (talk) 15:23, 1 May 2022 (UTC)
I changed the one at en-wikiquote. So far with no objection. Ottawahitech (talk) 15:13, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
