Authorization to upload an image

Good day! How do I communicate to Wikipedia that I have authorization to upload an image? Thanks! Richard.reive (talk) 13:42, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

Hi Richard, that's not strictly the question that Wikimedia Commons cares about. See COM:LICENSING.
We care that all content here is 'free to use'. That means that it's all either public domain (by virtue of age, etc) or that it's 'freely licensed', i.e. that whoever owns the rights to it has granted a free licence to everyone, so that they may use it in the future.
We have a few other issues, such as COM:SCOPE (it must be "realistically useful" for an "educational purpose").
To answer your immediate question, we need to be clear that the media is freely licensed. So the uploader is either the rights holder (usually the author) and grants such a licence themselves, or they're acting on behalf of the rights holder and we can demonstrate this with a long-term audit trail, or else the material is inherently free to use, because old public domain materials are free for everyone. It's important that we record this correctly at the start, otherwise this might be questioned in future years when it's impossible to clear up any questions. So you might need to use COM:OTRS, where an email which is clearly from the rights holder states, "Yes, I'm happy to license this". Otherwise if it's already visible on the web, you might make a copyright statement on a company website saying, "We're releasing our archive material onto these pages, under a free licence, such as a Creative Commons free licence."
Any questions, please ask. Andy Dingley (talk) 15:43, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

Releasing my .webm contribution under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license

I have just uploaded my short video File:Tardigrade FlynnBurhoe.webm . I converted it from its original .mp4 format to the .webm In the process, I did not see Wikimedia's automatic license release option but I did include the licensing in the template. I revisited it to add a second template as suggested. Does the file not conform to Wikimedia's standards? If not, how do I add the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License (CC BY-SA) license? Thank you Oceanflynn (talk) 19:43, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

  • Convenience link: File:Tardigrade FlynnBurhoe.webm. - Jmabel ! talk 21:56, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
  • @Oceanflynn: Either you or a bot under your control tagged it {{No license since}} on original upload. You can certainly feel free to remove a tag you added if you feel the matter is addressed.
  • Also, assuming Maureen Flynn-Burhoe is yourself, you might want to give the author as [[User:Oceanflynn|Maureen Flynn-Burhoe]] both to clarify that and so the name links back to your account. Similarly, in the {{Self}} template, you might want to add "|author=[[User:Oceanflynn|Maureen Flynn-Burhoe]]" or someone is likely to credit your account here rather than your actual name. - Jmabel ! talk 22:03, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

Category name for railway stations

Hi, what is the right category name for a railway station? Is it Category:Meran train station or is it Category:Meran railway station ? JoeHard (talk) 20:08, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

That is Meran train station. You can find it by starting from Category:Merano -> Category:Transport in Merano -> Category:Train stations in Merano -> Category:Meran train station. Wouter (talk) 20:45, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
I did not ask specially for Meran train station, it was an example. I would like to know if there is a category naming rule for train stations. JoeHard (talk) 21:06, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

broken thumb nailing on a repeated basis

Yesterday, I tried to upload a minor amendment on Romance & Reality 2.pdf but the result was a file icon Fileicon-pdf.png which I cannot get rid of. It shows file dimensions of 0 x 0 with 335 pages. I tried uploading another version with exactly the same result, so tried reverting to the original version to no avail, both the reversion and the original are now similarly corrupted. At Wikisource they tell me this is to do with broken thumb nailing when upload volume is overloaded and suggested it may be corrected within a few days. Due to another issue, I have today uploaded a new version of Francesca Carrara 1.pdf, expecting some normality but exactly the same has happened again. It would appear therefore that any attempt I make to upload is going to be corrupted. Can you look into this and make sure it does not keep on happening, please? Esme Shepherd (talk) 11:27, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

Incidentally, the file icon I am repeatedly getting is https://nl.wikipedia.org/skins-1.5/common/images/icons/fileicon-pdf.png Esme Shepherd (talk) 11:36, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
Convenience links: File:Romance & Reality 2.pdf, File:Fileicon-pdf.png, File:Francesca Carrara 1.pdf. - Jmabel ! talk 18:19, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
File:Francesca Carrara 1.pdf reverted, that one should be fine now. File:Romance & Reality 2.pdf also looks fine, though I have no idea why removing the table of contents is considered an improvement. Nothing you did affected File:Fileicon-pdf.png; I believe that's just supposed to be a marker for external links to PDFs, at least on the Dutch language Wikipedia. No idea why it would be there on an internal link, unless you built it like an external link. - Jmabel ! talk 18:26, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
I have been asked by Xover not to include TOCs, that is the reason for removal. I have uploaded a new version of Francesca Carrara 1.pdf again in the usual way, again without a TOC and again it is corrupted by the Fileicon and the file appears to be blank. I've no idea what you mean by an external link, I have been uploading for years using the wizard and I've never had this problem before. As things stand, there appears to be a major bug in your systems and I can expect to have the same problem in the not too distant future when I use the UploadWizard for Francesca Carrara 2.pdf. However, in the meantime, please would you put the no TOC version of Francesca Carrara 1.pdf right for me. Thanks, Esme Shepherd (talk) 10:53, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
@Esme Shepherd: Your latest version of File:Francesca Carrara 1.pdf looks fine, but does haev a TOC. I have no idea what you mean by "put it right". - Jmabel ! talk 15:54, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
What I meant was to make the version without a TOC right - without the interloping file icon. This is not the current version but the Index does exist in all versions and I am working on it at this moment. However, if this is not practicable, the current version can stand and I will ignore the TOC on tranclusion, assuming I am still around to do so. Esme Shepherd (talk) 16:01, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

Hello, I'm working on a draft article on wikipedia which is now being reviewed and I would also like to have our company logo (which is trademarked) added. I'm new to Wikimedia and I'm not sure what the process is so I have a number of questions.

  • Should I wait until the article gets published or can the media be added now?
  • Does the media need to be uploaded in multiple sizes?
  • How can it be uploaded as a trademarked logo? The company probably doesn't want it modified/sold.
  • And finally, could someone help me with making sure it gets uploaded correctly? Thanks! Spektred (talk) 16:54, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
The fact the logo is trademarked does not really matter. What is important is the copyright status of the logo. If is very simple and not protected by the copyright you can upload it here and use in the article. If it is protected by copyright, it will need to be released under a free license prior to the uploading. In any case, people will be able to freely modify the logo and use it for any purpose provided the conditions of the chosen free license (if any) are obeyed and the trademark law requirements are complied with. Ruslik (talk) 20:49, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
@Spektred: No need to wait for the article. No need to use multiple sizes; give the highest resolution available, our software will do a good job of downsizing if needed. Mark anything that is trademaked with {{Trademark}}. If there is a copyright issue, you may still be able to upload within Wikipedia (e.g. see en:Template:Non-free logo) but not here on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 22:28, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

Photos supprimées

Bonjour

-- Asclepias (talk) 19:55, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

Image flips

Hi, I am trying to upload an picture I took to commons. But when I upload it using upload wizard, it flips the image upside down which is not good.

So I thought I should flip the image before uploading it to commons, so then when commons flips the image it turns right side up. But this does not work either. When I submit the already-flipped image, it DOESN'T flip the image and just leaves it upside down. It's like it wants the image to be upside down... I don't know how to fix it. photo pulled for copyright issues that are incorrect

Hello,

I have a photo I'd uploaded for an article re: Samuel A. Culbert https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Samuel_A._Culbert. It was pulled for potential copyright infringement. The reason is it also appeared in a HuffPost article. However, it is the property of Samuel A. Culbert. I can change the attribution/wording to reflect this, but can't seem to reload despite being logged into the system. Can you help.

Many thanks.

All my best, Bekah Wright bekwright@gmail.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bekwright (talk • contribs) 16:09, 3 August 2021 (UTC)

  • @Bekwright: I presume this is about File:Sam full size (1).jpg. Please do not re-upload. At this point, with the image deleted, the correct venue to discuss this is Commons:Undeletion requests. I note that when you uploaded this, you claimed this as your own work, listed yourself as the author, gave no source, and claimed as author to be granting a license, so the deletion appears to have been absolutely correct. If the facts are different, make sure that before you request undeletion you know exactly who owns the copyright on the image and also to have evidence that the copyright-holder has granted a Commons-appropriate license. - Jmabel ! talk 18:38, 3 August 2021 (UTC)
@Bekwright: File:Sam full size (1).jpg was a copy of the photo at https://www.huffpost.com/entry/good-people-bad-managers-an-interview-with-samuel_b_59f1ebf7e4b05f0ade1b554b . The photo in that article, https://img.huffingtonpost.com/asset/59f1ec8a1500007c417478c0.jpg , is captioned "AUTHOR PHOTO", which means nothing to us from a copyright perspective. I see no free license on that page, which is copyrighted by BuzzFeed, Inc. I also see no clues to a free license from author Culbert, or the photographer. So where is the free license from? Where is your evidence of that? Where is the metadata from the original camera? Can I upload my own photo of gift-shop items (playing cards, a small box of perfume, etc) with a logo related to the subject of an article?

The instructions say that Commons sometimes accepts original photos of "useful" and "non-artistic" items. What if the items are decorated with a logo? For an article about the founder of a restaurant chain that no longer exists, I'd like to upload my own photo of some small souvenir items (playing cards, a small drinking glass, a matchbook) that were sold at the restaurant gift shop. All of the items are decorated with the words "Patricia Murphy's Candlelight Restaurant." They're for an article about [Murphy, a restaurateur]. The items were promotional, not artistic. CreativeCommons license with additional restriction "sharing on social media not allowed"?

I have some questions about the license presented on this user page. The license is used in files such as this example.
The user shares their files under a CC BY-SA 4.0 International license, with the additional restriction that "it is not permitted to upload this file to Facebook, Twitter, Youtube". Is such a restriction even possible?
On CC's license page, it says that there are "no additional restrictions", and "You may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits."
CC's statement about sharing images on social media includes no mention of their terms of service being incompatible with CC. It may be incompatible with non-commercial licenses (although CC doesn't necessarily agree with this notion in their statement, see the section "CC licenses and terms of service: What about NC-licensed content?"). This doesn't seem relevant however, because CC BY-SA 4.0 is not an NC license.
My questions:
1. What am I allowed to do with the images created by said user?
2. If the restriction included in the user's license is valid then does the restriction not to share on social media apply to all CC-licensed content?
3. If it isn't then can the user's license be changed accordingly?
4. Can the user require that credit is given exactly as presented on their license page, or are other CC-conform ways of crediting them permitted? Renerpho (talk) 19:13, 4 August 2021 (UTC)

  • Just to be clear: there is no problem at all linking any CC-BY-SA image from Facebook or other social media.
  • However: uploading it there is actually a license violation. Let's just take Facebook as our example. When you upload to Facebook, you grant Facebook a basically unlimited license that doesn't even require attribution. You don't have the right to do that with someone else's photo.
  • People violate this all the time on Facebook: for example, think how many so-called "memes" steal someone's copyrighted photo. And Facebook makes no effort to enforce this sort of violation of a third-party's license. However, it is a copyright violation, and it is reasonable for a copyright-holder to announce that they will consider it as such, and reserve the right to pursue legal remedies. - Jmabel ! talk 22:23, 4 August 2021 (UTC)

Weird file

Hi, I have come across a strange to me behavior of the commons mechanism in relation to an svg file. This file opens normally, there are all icons on the toolbar and if you open it directly in the browser everything is as usual. However, this file when opened on the toolbar has fewer options, and when opened directly in the browser the text it contains is displayed as xml instead of an image. --Krzysiek 123456789 (talk) 22:56, 3 August 2021 (UTC)

P.S. ping me when giving answer. Krzysiek 123456789 (talk) 23:41, 3 August 2021 (UTC)
I do not know if this helps. When I open the second file I noted this text on top: "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below". Perhaps you can look for an explanation/cause on the internet @Krzysiek 123456789: . Elly (talk)
The SVG file at File:POL_Bełchatów_COA.svg lacks an "XML prolog" (the first line of the SVG should look something like <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>). Commons has a bug (see phab:T131012) where SVG files that lack an XML prolog are served to browsers with a text content type, not an image content type, which is why you see the raw text instructions for that SVG file when you try to view the original file directly from the browser. When you look at the page File:POL_Bełchatów_COA.svg the image you see is actually a smaller thumbnail image, not the actual original SVG file, which is why it looks OK. —RP88 (talk) 07:43, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

I have my doubts about this: File:TomBromhead publicdomain.jpg . Drmies (talk) 21:19, 5 August 2021 (UTC)

I think this photo upload is an example of fairly common misunderstanding - an image is not in the public domain just because the image appears on a publicly-available website. I've marked File:TomBromhead publicdomain.jpg for eventual deletion as an obvious copyright violation. —RP88 (talk) 21:32, 5 August 2021 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: This is the help desk and both parties don't have a lot of experience with Commons, so I wanted both parties to have some time to read and understand what was happening. In particular, I wanted the questioner to have some time to see what the copyright violation speedy delete template looks like (so they might decide to use it themselves in the future) and well as give some time for the uploader to also see it and maybe convert it to DR if they disagreed. At the time I tagged it I added a reminder to check back after the 7 days had expired and delete if neither questioner or uploader had any questions. —RP88 (talk) 23:59, 5 August 2021 (UTC)
@RP88: Drmies has been here for 12+ years, is an autopatroller and rollbacker here, and is a checkuser and oversighter on enwiki. Speedy delete templates are supposed to be acted upon speedily, not after 7 days.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:10, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

Hi, I don't really understand this "out of date". Each photo basically only shows the condition or appearance of the subject at the time it was taken. So, this can hardly be a rationale for deletion. --Túrelio (talk) 08:54, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

Releasing Copyrights on a web article

Hi all, I would like to release the copyright permissions on a web article for which I have already been in contact with the author. @Jeff G.: Apologies, I should have phrased that better. I am comfortable and familiar with sending the email to OTRS to formally release the works. What is the best way of 'uploading' the website to Commons? I would like to have the release authorised ASAP and it appears the quickest way to do that is to first upload it onto Commons. Yet I cannot find a good way to release a website URL, as it is not a file. What is the best way to upload the web article to commons? Do I even need to upload it or would it be better to send the URL in the email?

@Jeff G.: I have now sent permissions as instructed on VRT, how can I show that the copyrights on these articles have been released to a reviewer? How do they know that the sites have had the copyrights released when I have not uploaded anything to commons?
Jameshancock01 (talk) 14:16, 6 August 2021 (UTC)
@Jameshancock01: You should indicate such with the ticket number in footnotes or edit summaries or replies to questions about such copyrights. For files, we have {{subst:OP}} for file description pages, although the name may change with the conversion to VRT.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:37, 6 August 2021 (UTC)
  1. @Jameshancock01: You can't really upload a website to Commons. You can upload the images.
  2. Rather than the OTRS/VRT process: if it is their website, why don't they just indicate the license on the site itself? - Jmabel ! talk 15:40, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

How to creat profile photo — Preceding unsigned comment added by M Kareemulla Baigh (talk • contribs) 11:49, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

@M Kareemulla Baigh: Hi, and welcome. The process is the same as creating any other photo. Then, you can post it on a service that supports profiles, we don't. If you have been editing one or more projects in good faith, you may upload a photo of yourself and see en:H:PIC for image usage. See also COM:SIGN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:29, 6 August 2021 (UTC)
@M Kareemulla Baigh: The account from which you are posting does not seem to have made any significant contributions to Commons, nor any contribution to any of our sister WMF projects. There is no point to having a profile here unless you are actually doing something here. Profiles are welcome, but only from active contributors. - Jmabel ! talk 15:43, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

globalReplace.js

Hi! It looks like the gadget globalReplace.js doesn't work any more. But yesterday it worked normal. Is the gadget actually down? Doc Taxon (talk) 14:43, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

@Doc Taxon: I use mw.loader.load('//commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Perhelion/justReplace.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript'); and mw.loader.load('//commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Perhelion/JustReplace%2B.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript'); in my common.js, and "global replace" shows up for me on file description pages. this doesn't work too, clicking onto GlobalReplace or justReplace+ link does not open the form window. It happens nothing ... Not on Firefox, Chrome, not using desktop or mobile devices Doc Taxon (talk) 17:14, 6 August 2021 (UTC)
Hi @Jeff G.: I checked your common.js and prepended the line mw.loader.load('//commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Gadget-dashboard.UndeletionRequester.js?action=raw&ctype=text/javascript'); Only this way justReplace+ works. Weird Doc Taxon (talk) 20:23, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

Please be a bit more specific. What error messages do you get, and which file type are you trying to upload? De728631 (talk) 20:50, 7 August 2021 (UTC)
PS: If your request is about File:Don Gee Miami.jpg and other deleted images, please note that Commons has a specific educational scope and we do not accept personal images from editors that have not yet contributed constructively to any Wikimedia projects. Also, uploading images to promote yourself and writing an autobiography at Wikipedia is not acceptable either. If your music project is notable, someone else will eventually write a Wikipedia article about you and that would then be the time to upload images. De728631 (talk) 20:58, 7 August 2021 (UTC)

@H.jafarizade3559: From the deletion message, apparently the image had been previously published elsewhere without a free license and no confirmation was otherwise received by Wikimedia . The administrator 4nn1l2 can probably answer your question better, in Persian or in English. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:09, 3 August 2021 (UTC)
@H.jafarizade3559: Here we respect copyright rules. You can only upload files that you have created yourself entirely. You can also upload few freely-licensed content found on the web, but the vast majority of the content on the web cannot be uploaded here. Please read COM:L/fa. 4nn1l2 (talk) 14:38, 3 August 2021 (UTC)

Dear Sirs I still can not understand what you mean. Please retell your query in Farsi. For your attention, I used a picture from the 1914 anatomy book of Sobota. I created a photoshopped new picture from it. The sentences I quoted were taken out from the Gray anatomy published in the 19th century. Please send your alert definitely in Persian and describe your alert and the infringement of copyright, otherwise, I would put the case on a legal trial for disturbing and annoying me after 40 years of anatomy research. — Preceding unsigned comment added by H.jafarizade3559 (talk • contribs) 08:33, 8 August 2021 (UTC)

How can I find non-copyrighted images for a certain topic?

I tried to filter for images licensed under a Creative Commons license through advanced search settings, however the only results brought up are ones irrelevant to the topic, content on different websites are copyrighted. Is there a different, or more effective way to find images that aren't copyrighted? KhndzorUtogh (talk) 18:24, 5 August 2021 (UTC)

You could try the search function at Creative Commons or search at Flickr and then use their licence filter on the results. However, if you told us your preferred topic, we might be able to come up with a refined search over here too. De728631 (talk) 20:02, 5 August 2021 (UTC)

SVG thumbnail not updating

Hi, I can see similar questions in the archive but I can't see any solution. I regularly update this graph file, but regardless of which browser I use the thumbnail image used on the English Wikipedia and the thumbnail image on the Commons page are still a version from 26 July. I've uploaded six new versions since then and it's been almost two weeks. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I've not had this issue before. Ralbegen (talk) 09:22, 8 August 2021 (UTC)

@Ralbegen: The lastest visible version is from August 7. Please check if a "purge" will do the trick for you. Click here to purge the image page. Thuresson (talk) 11:16, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
@Thuresson: Thanks for getting back to me. I've tried pressing the purge link you've provided, but nothing has changed for me: the png preview at the top of the page, which is also the image that appears on the English Wikipedia, is still the version from 26 July. Clicking on the png preview links to the svg, which is correct and up-to-date; the issue is only with the png preview. Ralbegen (talk) 12:42, 8 August 2021 (UTC)

I've tried everything I can from Help:Purge and nothing seems to have helped. I've also verified the problem with other users, though one user has reported that the image on the English Wikipedia is up-to-date on their computer but the same version I've linked to above on their phone. Other people I ask have only seen the 26 June version. I don't know if that might be helpful information for anybody who might have a solution? Ralbegen (talk) 19:16, 10 August 2021 (UTC)

  • If the image was within the last week:
    • you can just edit the page and put a different license. In your edit summary, indicate that the original license was an error.
    • to delete the image, just put {{subst:My bad upload}} on the page and it will be deleted soon.
  • If it's older than a week, let me know, because the answer is more complicated. If that is the case, please say what license you want, and link the images when you reply so I can see if there are relevant details.

Can I use image from 1960 postcard that has no copyright notice

To illustrate the article on Patricia Murphy (restaurateur) I'd like to use a cropped portion of a 1960 photo of her that appeared on a postcard that was printed by the thousands and distributed to customers for free at her Candlelight Restaurants. There is no attribution for the photo and no copyright notice on the postcard, as you can see on my copy of the front and back. Murphy provided free pens and postage for her restaurant customers. The cards were a marketing vehicle, and many are still in existence. The restaurants all went out of business decades ago, Murphy is deceased, and the corporations she headed have all been dissolved.

Copyright help regarding File:Tom Taylor writer 2016.jpg

I am new to uploading files to Wikimedia. There's an image of Tom Taylor taken at a public place (2016 Singapore Toy Game and Comic Convention) that I wanted to use for the Tom Taylor (writer) article.

https://www.nookmag.com/interview-with-tom-taylor-saving-the-world-through-comic-books/

Article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Taylor_(writer)

It is my understanding that images of individuals taken in a public place can be uploaded to Wikimedia, but I am unsure what the copyright status of such a picture would be. Does the photo need to be uploaded to Wikipedia directly in this case? Or what is the best course of action here?

Thank you!

Uploading AI-upscaled images?

If I have a low resolution screenshot from a creative commons licensed YouTube video, can I use an AI-upscaler to increase the resolution and upload that image? DiamondIIIXX (talk) 08:03, 10 August 2021 (UTC)

  • Upscaling is almost never a good idea. Despite appearances, it does not add actual accurate information, it reduces it. Just upload as is. - Jmabel ! talk 15:25, 10 August 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I generally agree, but I guess it depends on the nature of the subject and just how ‘smart’ the AI in the upscaler is (assuming it’s not just called AI as marketing hype). I am inclined to be skeptical, but it‘s my impression that image-analysis research has been advancing recently … In any case, @DiamondIIIXX, I recommend uploading the original as well, even if it looks a lot worse, and linking the two files: it would make for better provenance (allowing the interpolation to be distinguished from fakery), and future software might well be able to do a better job. In case you don‘t also upload the original, please be sure to describe the manipulation in the file description.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 03:38, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel: @Odysseus1479: I have uploaded both, though I have only used the "orignal" in the article for now. Compare the Original to the AI-upscaled version. In my opinion, it's much less blurry (the video source was 480p from 2012), the detail is generally better across the image (on his cap and the Marshall speaker behind him). Also, the additional AI-added detail on the microphone, screw in the background, and his bike-handlebar necklace makes the image much less distracting and more presentable for a wiki page. What do you think? — Preceding unsigned comment added by DiamondIIIXX (talk • contribs) 04:05, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
I think the new texture on the microphone is entirely imaginary; other than that, it's basically a matter of sharpening; the higher resolution isn't really relevant. - Jmabel ! talk 05:18, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
No expert here, but from a quick look I think it smoothed out some of the JPEG artifacts—at least didn’t make them worse, and the sharpening doesn’t appear to have created ‘ghosts’ as would simple USM. But there seems to be an odd feathery texture in the edge of his chin, running up past his lip, where the original is mainly blocky. A pretty modest enlargement anyway, and considering the original video frame probably contained a rather small proportion of ‘real’ data to start with, I agree the added pixels are of little significance compared to the processing technique. As for the article where you’re using it, I suggest posting to its TP to see if anyone there has a preference.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 06:02, 11 August 2021 (UTC)

Upload company logo to it's Wikipedia page

Hey, I want to add our logo to our new Wikipedia page but it wouldn't alow uploading logos. The image I'm trying to upload is mine (under the company) and I can prove I work there. How can I overcome this issue?

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by NoaGreenberg397 (talk • contribs) 08:59, 11 August 2021 (UTC)

@NoaGreenberg397: Hello and welcome to Wikimedia Commons. First of all, for any copyrighted images that have been published before without a free licence, we need a verification that the copyright holder agrees with a release under a free licence at Commons. The easiest way to do that would be to grant a free licence for the logo at your company's website. If that is not an option, please contact our Volunteer Response Team by email.
As to uploading the logo, what file format did you try to upload? There are only a few certain file types for graphics that you can actually use here, so please see Commons:File types for accepted formats. De728631 (talk) 11:51, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
@NoaGreenberg397: Also, depending on the subject matter, people around here like to pick and choose what is or isn't appropriate and how quickly it's acted upon. In one case, I opened a deletion request for a logo. This DR has sat open for eight months and has not received any acknowledgement whatsoever that I'm aware of. In another case, a logo which was previously deleted twice as a copyright violation has been available on the site for the past three months because the uploader didn't want to hear anything about copyright and keeps uploading it under a different filename each time to get around any scrutiny. The important difference is that these are logos of non-profit rather than for-profit entities. Of course admins on this site will apply different rules if it's a logo of a for-profit company.RadioKAOS (talk) 14:16, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
Reiterating the key point: The easiest way to do that would be to grant a free license for the logo at your company's website. - Jmabel ! talk 19:55, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
@NoaGreenberg397: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png logo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png logos are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to license it on your official website or social media or send permission via VRT. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the logo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. See also COM:SIGN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:44, 12 August 2021 (UTC)

Can this image be posted?

This musician posted her selfie in Twitter saying she’d like it to be her Wikipedia image: https://twitter.com/leftatlondon/status/1425507606777405442?s=21

She then gave her express permission that it was to be added under the Creative Commons: https://twitter.com/leftatlondon/status/1425509311636148226?s=21

However, once it was uploaded, it was immediately removed. My question is simple: what do you have to do to make something kosher to upload in Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dabblequeen (talk • contribs) 18:26, 11 August 2021 (UTC)

  • @Dabblequeen: She's expressed a wish to have the image as her Wikipedia page, but no one has granted a free license.
  • Is this a selfie? If so, she is in a position to grant a license. Otherwise, we need permission from the photographer.
  • Assuming it is a selfie, then all she needs to do is to say (also on her Twitter account, preferably on one of these threads) that she is OK with releasing the image under a CC-BY-SA 4.0 license. Do make sure she is familiar with https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/, so she understands what that means. - Jmabel ! talk 20:00, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
@Dabblequeen: Hi, and welcome. Neither of you specified which Creative Commons license, and which version number. We accept about half of them. See also COM:L and COM:SIGN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:37, 12 August 2021 (UTC)

Copyright Album/Single Covers

Hi. How do we upload files of album covers and/or single covers? I've seen them being used for songs or albums even when it has some sort of copyright use in it so I wanna know how it can be done. — Preceding unsigned comment added by InOurHeartsJD (talk • contribs) 01:10, 12 August 2021 (UTC)

I'm not sure. Usually I'll see albums/singles used for artists in specific areas. Example, File:One direction up all night albumcover.jpg. I think the cover art has some sort of copyright on it. So I wanna know how or if it's possible to upload something similar like that. Sorry if I'm not making a whole lot of sense. I'm just not that great at explaining things InOurHeartsJD (talk)

@InOurHeartsJD: Hi, and welcome. File:One direction up all night albumcover.jpg doesn't exist. en:File:One direction up all night albumcover.jpg on English Wikipedia uses en:Template:Non-free use rationale album cover. Please see that template. Such covers may be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:49, 12 August 2021 (UTC)

Photo Removed

The user had our clients photo removed.

We are a management company with 200+ clients, we have been paying writers to do our content on our clients.

We have since hired a wiki writer in-house and they operate this profile.

The photo was upload while building the page, the particular photo is of a client whom of which is a hip hop musician signed with The Universe Records.

The same photo used professionally on all of their social platforms and press.

The clients name is VonRyan the Genius or VonRyan Elrod — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thegeniusmgmt (talk • contribs) 03:40, 12 August 2021 (UTC)

  • Assuming your paid "wiki writer in-house" edits the English-language Wikipedia, it is hard to see how that is not a violation of en:WP:Conflict of interest. But that is en-wiki's issue, not Commons'.
  • I'm guessing this is about File:VonRyan.jpg. It was deleted as an out-of-scope personal photo, which may not be correct, but since the entire description was "The Genius in 2019" and the categories were very vague, it was a reasonable assumption.
  • The photo was described as "own work." Are you, the operator of this account, the same person who took the photo?
  • At this point, this is enough of a muddle that if you want it undeleted, I suggest going through the process described at COM:VRT. - Jmabel ! talk 05:35, 12 August 2021 (UTC)

What do you do if you see something that probably violates copyright law?

Hi. I clicked through from a headshot on Wikipedia that looked professionally done. I was curious how you had permission to use a professional headshot, but the image page just claims it was taken by a user - I assume the uploader. That seems unlikely. What do you do when something dubious like that is uploaded? Does it just stay up unless the copyright holder asks for it to be taken down?

Here's the image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Carrie-Hope-Fletcher.jpg — Preceding unsigned comment added by TrueNeutral879 (talk • contribs) 21:50, 12 August 2021 (UTC)

  • Certainly dubious: rather low-res, cross-uploaded from Wikipedia, no other Commons contributions by that user, and has edited en-wiki on only one topic other than uploading that photo. It wasn't all that long ago so User:JWB2504 may be around to explain; on the other hand, they didn't provide an email address, so unless they are logging in to an WMF project, they won't get any notification.
  • Tineye shows this usage by the Sharpe Academy that predates the image being uploaded on Commons, so that's problematic. Image there is differently cropped, so the Commons image was not copied from there. No credit given there.
  • Also via Tineye, it was apparently used by @CarrieHFletcher on Twitter before being uploaded to Commons, but the account is now closed and the image is no longer visible.
  • So... we'd really need the COM:VRT process on this, and we don't really know how to get hold of the uploader. I wouldn't go so far as to just tag it for speedy deletion with {{Copyvio}}, but a deletion request seems in order. I hope JWB2504 is around and can help sort things out. - Jmabel ! talk 22:41, 12 August 2021 (UTC)

For what it's worth: I don't find "professional quality" to be inherently suspicious! I would hope that plenty of my own photo portraits would be considered to be "professionally done." - Jmabel ! talk 22:49, 12 August 2021 (UTC)

Certainly all great photos! I think what I found most suspicious was the posing - very typical of a formal professional headshot rather than something taken "in the wild" - and the fact that it's been photoshopped, according to the metadata section. Of course, your own research - that it has been used online before being uploaded on Wikipedia - is much more compelling. Thanks for educating me on how these things work! This is all quite interesting, and it's great to see that the site seems to respect copyright law even without receiving takedown requests. That's pretty rare on the internet. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TrueNeutral879 (talk • contribs) 22:57, 12 August 2021 (UTC)

Alex Proimos images - Pixsy trolling

I run a group that helps warn people about Pixsy trolls. For anyone who doesn't know what this is, it's basically when people put large numbers of Creative Commons images online and then hit unsuspecting users with license fee demands for hundreds of dollars through Pixsy (a copyright enforcement company) every time they make some minor error in an image attribution. Wikimedia Commons previously banned images by Marco Verch, who has been accused of doing this on an industrial scale. However, we get reports at our group of many other people doing this now on a smaller scale and I think it is important to notify Wikimedia Commons when we get a lot of reports about particular photographers who have a lot of images listed on here so you can take action.

I would like to suggest that Alex Proimos should be looked at on this basis. He has been mentioned to us on multiple occasions including some examples of him issuing Pixsy demands precisely because someone has linked to his image on Wikimedia Commons rather than his own Flickr account. The fact that hundreds of his images are listed on this site is a safety risk for ordinary users who might unsuspectingly use them and get Pixsy on their case as a result. If he complains about this, I would suggest giving him the chance to reupload them using a CC BY 4.0 license, which makes Pixsy trolling largely impossible as the updated terms specify that users have 30 days to correct image attribution errors before they can be hit with legal action. If he is an honest user and not, as our reports would suggest, a Pixsy troll then he would have no objection to this. However, allowing hundreds of his images to appear here under a CC BY 2.0 license is deeply problematic. Thomjobson (talk) 01:57, 13 August 2021 (UTC)

Air show photos from Helsinki 2021

Hi,

I was trying to upload some photos I recently took in the Helsinki Air Show (Aug. 6th). Uploading went well, except that the photos are all vertical, but somehow in the uploading process they were turned around so that they’re all horizontal. I don’t know how to change that in Wikimedia Commons. Is it still possible to change this when the photos are already in W-Commons? Or should something be done about this before uploading. The photos were shot vertical, and in the Canon Image Browser programme they are all vertical, so no change was needed there. Could you please help me with this problem? I have more photos to upload, if this problem can be solved. You can find these photos with the Category:Helsinki in 2021. Paul Hasselblatt (talk) 23:27, 11 August 2021 (UTC)

Hi, it seems the problem solved itself, and the photos are vertical! Paul Hasselblatt (talk) 23:31, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
@Paul Hasselblatt: AIUI there are many ways to encode photo orientation, and not all image software can recognize or reconcile all of them. I suspect in this case that while generating thumbnails the upload wizard neglected or misinterpreted something that the MediaWiki renderer handled correctly. At any rate, if an image does actually come out the wrong way around, you can put {{Rotate}} on the file page (see the linked documentation) and a bot will come around and fix it (losslessly).—Odysseus1479 (talk) 22:22, 14 August 2021 (UTC)

Copyright claims on public domain paintings?

I have encountered this painting from 1825. It would naturally seem to fall under public domain because of its age, however The Cyfarthfa Castle Museum & Art Gallery claims copyright over that image. Would that be seen as an invalid claim by that entity, and would that image be allowed to be uploaded to Commons? It seems to me that it isn't a derivative work of a public domain image with enough creative input for it to be protected by copyright. BeŻet (talk) 15:54, 14 August 2021 (UTC)

  • @BeŻet: I'd say utter copyfraud, but it's a little tricky because the UK has a sweat of the brow doctrine. - Jmabel ! talk 17:29, 14 August 2021 (UTC)
  • But, reading that article, it looks like a court ruling from 2015 makes it clear that it wouldn't apply here, and this is PD. - Jmabel ! talk 17:30, 14 August 2021 (UTC)
All that I could find is this article presenting an argument that if a painting belongs to a museum and you buy a ticket for said museum, the terms and conditions could prohibit you from taking photos of the painting, and therefore the problem would be of a contractual nature. But that particular painting is also available in other mediums. BeŻet (talk) 18:17, 14 August 2021 (UTC)
That UK judgement according with European law might not stand, because Brexit—but regardless, Commons policy (with some backing from WMF Legal et al.) has long been to disregard such claims on “faithful” reproductions of old works; see {{PD-art}} and {{PD-scan}}. Regarding museums prohibiting photography, I agree that’s a contractual matter based on the ToU for their visitors, nothing to do with copyright, and the same goes for websites. In these cases we leave it to photographers or downloaders (and would-be reusers) to assess the ethics of the situation, and any attendant legal risks, for themselves.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:47, 14 August 2021 (UTC)

@Magisita: Assuming you are the heir to your father's intellectual property (which would be the case if you are the heir to the residuum of his estate and no one else was specified as heir to your his intellectual property) you can use an "heirs" license template like {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}} or {{PD-heirs}}. That may not be offered as a choice when uploading with certain tools, but you can upload with the corresponding non-heirs license and then edit the file page immediately after uploading. Do remember to attribute your father, not yourself, as author. - Jmabel ! talk 19:26, 15 August 2021 (UTC)

General categories can be added or edited as HotCat.

Hidden categories, cannot be added or edited as HotCat.

How do I edit Hidden categories when I have an account and I am an auto-authenticated user?

When you add a classification that belongs to the Hidden categories to the contents of the file, it is only added to the Hidden categories.

Originally, it is not in the contents of the file, but it remains in the contents.

Most of the public files look in the file, but some of them don't have a category.

Here File:Itsutsu-Fundou-Kamon.svg The files, and most of them,

Category:Valid SVG created with Affinity Designer:Japanese crests When you edit a file, it appears below.

How do I solve this case?

If the account login user adds it and the IP user adds it to the contents of the file document.

Category:Valid SVG created with Affinity Designer:Japanese crests I can see that.

Is it possible to hide this invisible or to create and insert the corresponding classification?

File:Honjo family crest.svg When editing Category:Valid SVG created with Affinity Designer:Japanese crests I can't see.

-- int:license-header -- self/GFDL/cc-by-sa-all/migration=redundant

Category:Mon (5-fold symmetry) Category:Fundō mon (Japanese crests of counterweight) Category:Sakura mon (Japanese crests of cherry blossom) Category:Valid SVG created with Affinity Designer:Japanese crests

So

This is an example. Assessments/POTY=f/... When you see a code that says,, Template Name space Assessments in a document POTY (finalist) to F in You cross the parameters and put them in the middle. POTY (finalist) Category is template:assessments sandwiched in template:assessments/commons sandwiched in template:assessments/category In F in The parameters "create and insert" the classification.

I don't know what it's about, so when you edit it by inserting a category into a file document using parameters, you can't see it.

The file document says that there is a professional way to add categories to Hidden Categories, but I don't know how to do it.

Please solve it. 135.84.180.228 05:23, 15 August 2021 (UTC)

Hello, everybody. Well, Mexican law is not very specific in that regard. The closest thing I could find is that in the Ley Federal del Derecho de Autor (Federal Copyright Law), it says in its article 14:

Commons Commander is not working properly
Hello! I have the problem that the Commons Commander has not worked as it should for a long time. I helped myself with cat-a-lot, which works fine, but I would still like the Commons Commander to work again. The problem: When I open a category in Commons Commander, no images are displayed. You can see the category tree on the left, but no matter where I click on it, the page remains empty. The number of images and categories is also shown at the bottom. I use the latest Firefox but the problem has existed for a long time, as already written. I have no other problems with the display on the Internet.

De Minimis

Over at File:ESC 2021 Rotterdam 1st Semi Jury Show Russia.jpg and File:ESC 2021 Rotterdam 1st Semi Jury Show Russia2.jpg I pixelated both images due to the copyrighted artwork however Roman Kubanskiy has now added a De Minimis template to both files,
I don't really know if de minimis can apply as whilst the main subject was intended to be the singers on the stage - The singers are minute (tiny) whereas the artwork is certainly more visible than the singers.
I don't really know the best way forward - Should I unpixelate the images or leave them be?, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 16:36, 16 August 2021 (UTC)

Copyright tagging a derivative work

Hello. I'm looking for input on properly tagging a work like this: File:Schenectady_Ny_-_State_Street_History.jpg.

The top portion of the image was published in 1865 (prior to 1922). The bottom portion is my work, and I'm happy to release it under any license.

Since this is a derivative work based on an image in the public domain, is it appropriate to simply tag it CC? Or should it be tagged Template:PD-US-expired based on the original work?

Thank you! Jess Mann (talk) 23:58, 17 August 2021 (UTC)

I suggest uploading both source photos separately, each with an appropriate licence, then your composite can simply link to those, making the provenance clear. There’s no legal requirement to credit a PD source, but doing so greatly enhances the educational value. (And one day someone might want to do an 1865/2065 comparison, for example, or 2021/2071.) If you prefer a CC licence for your own photo and the derivative, go ahead: for the latter, PD components of a DW have no share or ‘weight‘ in any associated IP. (That is not necessarily true of copyleft components, which often limit the choice of licensing on a DW, for example the “SA“ condition in the licence shown at present.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:34, 18 August 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for the input. That sounds like a reasonable suggestion! Jess Mann (talk) 13:14, 18 August 2021 (UTC)

Manuel Jorge paintings

I received a notification about an image used on Wikipedia. The message was written in German and I used Google Translate to figure it out. The comment is meaningless. The situation is very strange. It was written by Turelius and none of the images belong to him. Mr. Túrelio does not have any authorship rights. Túrélio is neither the author nor the owner of any of the paintings.

I went to see the page https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manuel_Jorge and I noticed that several images were removed. I don't understand why, since the paintings are by Manuel Jorge, who was my father, and they are all part of my heritage. The works are from my private collection or which I have given to Portuguese museums in the meantime.

If necessary, I can send images or documents that prove the ownership of the works, whether mine or declarations from museums.

For these reasons, I thank you for clarification and the replacement of the images.

Kind regards, João Barbosa — Preceding unsigned comment added by João Pacheco Barbosa (talk • contribs) 21:47, 18 August 2021 (UTC)

@João Pacheco Barbosa: Hi, and welcome. The notice was from Túrelio, who started Commons:Deletion requests/File:Bairro típico de Lisboa.jpg. The files were deleted by Polarlys upon closure of that DR after you neglected to respond. Please post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on your official website or social media presence or send the photos and permission via VRT, and see COM:SIGN. Note, the same thing happened last October with Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Manuel Jorge. (Edit conflict)@João Pacheco Barbosa: although Jeff G. has addressed the principal question, let me add that a large part of the volunteer curatorial work on this project involves checking contributions for problematic content, including copyright violations. We all have an interest in ensuring that authorship rights are respected here, on behalf of both the creators and the re-users of the material. The message Túrelio placed on your Talk page is a standard auto-translated template, with links to versions in multiple languages underneath; I don’t know why you got it in German but I guess some kind of glitch in applying your language preference settings. In case you can’t get it to display in Portuguese in situ, the source for that version is at {{Idw/pt}}.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 02:35, 19 August 2021 (UTC)
@João Pacheco Barbosa: }} I didn't look at all of these, but you falsely falsely stated at File:Manuel Jorge - ceifeira alentejana carregando trigo.jpg that you were the author and this was your own work. You can't expect someone to guess that the person who made these false statements happens to be the artist's son and the heir to his intellectual property, so this particular falsehood is not really a reason for deletion. {{self|cc-by-sa-4.0}} is simply not correct. These need {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}. At this point, I think this needs to go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to clarify who you are and that you have a right to upload these. Make sure that you communicate to them the general situation, so they can give you a "ticket" that is general enough that you won't need to go through the same process for any other images of his work you may upload in the future. - Jmabel ! talk 14:58, 19 August 2021 (UTC)

Is this upload OK?

I probably should've asked before I did, but I uploaded this c. 1961 photo of painter Bob Ross as a soldier in the US Air Force (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Robert_N._%22Bob%22_Ross_1960s_Air_Force.jpg). Since this is a work by the US Air Force, I thought it would be considered Public Domain and OK to upload. Is it OK like I thought or no? If it was not OK, I'm sorry; please delete it. StrangeloveFan101 (talk) 10:16, 20 August 2021 (UTC)

@StrangeloveFan101: Why do you think it is an official Air Force photograph? The page where you found it, writes that it is "Courtesy of VA.gov" and there is no evidence that the photographer was a member of the USAF on his official duties. De728631 (talk) 13:16, 20 August 2021 (UTC)
De728631, you seem to be right. For all I know this could've been done by an independent photographer not affiliated with the Air Force or US Military. I did some digging, and this link from TheChive.com links to this blogpost from VA.gov, with Ross being nominated as Veteran of the Week. There is no evidence here that the photo of Ross in uniform was taken by someone in the USAF. In fact, there's a statement at the bottom that reads: It’s easy to nominate a Veteran. All it takes is an email to (VA email address) with as much of the information as you can put together with some good photos. So with this point in mind, someone probably just copied the image from Imgur, and submitted it with the nomination of Ross as VOTW. All that being said, and to play it safe, may this image be deleted? StrangeloveFan101 (talk) 14:01, 20 August 2021 (UTC)
Now that it is used in a bunch of articles, I don't think speedy-delete is the best way to go. Probably should just make a normal nomination for deletion & give a chance for someone to follow up & try to clear the rights. - Jmabel ! talk 17:05, 20 August 2021 (UTC)

I have removed it from the en-wiki main page as a precaution, but I'll add it back if I'm wrong. Cheers Amakuru (talk) 08:00, 21 August 2021 (UTC)

@Amakuru: according to the notice at Unisphere, the sculpture is free in the USA due to lack of compliance with the copyright formalities that were necessary at the time. You are right about American FoP—exempting buildings only, not sculpture—but PD is PD.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 08:15, 21 August 2021 (UTC)
@Odysseus1479: aha, thanks. I knew I was probably missing something, copyright law is so confusing! I wonder what would constitute a copyright notice for a 3D artwork? Should they have stamped something on the sculpture itself? (and has someone verified that they didn't... 🤔) Cheers Amakuru (talk) 08:27, 21 August 2021 (UTC)
@Amakuru: I think they could have put something on paper and sent it to the copyright office … certainly a renewal would have been in such form. No, that is the definition of irrevocable. We usually grant uploaders a courtesy period of one week to remove their own works, but we do not delete media after more than ten years because the authors no longer want to share it. The GFDL license is irrevocable and can be terminated by the original author only for someone who has violated the terms of the licence, and Creative Commons licenses are totally irrevocable. I.e. once you grant any such free license for a work of yours, you cannot take it back and anybody else may keep using it. De728631 (talk) 16:35, 21 August 2021 (UTC)

Soyuz Crew Photo Copyright Status (Soviet Union)

Hello,

I want to update the page of a Soviet cosmonaut with a picture of them in one of the crew photos that the Soviet Union took during that mission. However, I'm not entirely sure what the copyright status is of such photos. Am I free to share spaceflight photos? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Daarchini (talk • contribs) 02:36, 22 August 2021 (UTC)

  • @Daarchini: Just so you know: you're not being ignored, I just doubt anyone regularly monitoring this page has an answer for you. Do you have any reason to think the image would be public domain or free-licensed? I can't think of any, so I would presume that like most Soviet images of that era it is copyrighted. You might get a more knowledgeable answer at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 17:22, 22 August 2021 (UTC)

I created a page on Wikipedia about a Holding Company which is known in the MENA region and I'm not able to find it. User deleted the page without proper justification. Hi Mufaddalboxon. I assume the page in question is en:User:Mufaddalboxon/sandbox. You will have to take this up with en-wiki editors and their discussion boards. If the deleting admin did not respond, maybe try en:Wikipedia:Deletion review? Here on the commons helpdesk, we only deal with issues related to content on commons. Copyright help regarding File:Scott-patterson.jpg

Hi,

I am not sure how to properly attribute/tag/copyright a photo upload. I included the original link, but that doesn't seem to be sufficient. Any advice would be helpful.

--Crittab (talk) 18:44, 22 August 2021 (UTC)

@Crittab: What we need is also information about the copyright status of the file. Attribution of the source alone is insufficient because we need to be sure that the copyright holder allows free use of the image for anyone and any purpose. The photo you uploaded was credited to Getty Images at the source website which is a company that never publishes its content under a free licence. Therefore I had to delete the image here. Please read COM:L for further uploads. De728631 (talk) 22:19, 22 August 2021 (UTC)

Hello, we currently have two SVG versions of the current logo of NPO 3FM, File:NPO 3FM logo 2020.svg and File:Npo 3fm logo.svg. The latter is superior, as it's the one that comes directly from the website of the radio station, https://www.npo3fm.nl, and has a smaller size, while the former is converted from a PNG, as there wasn't an official SVG version when it was uploaded. Can File:Npo 3fm logo.svg be renamed to File:NPO 3FM logo 2020.svg, to be in harmony with the names in Category:Logos of Nederlandse Publieke Omroep (with "npo") and Category:Logos of Nederlandse Publieke Omroep (with diamond)? -Pennenetui3000 (talk) 20:26, 22 August 2021 (UTC)

To rename the smaller file, we would first have to delete File:NPO 3FM logo 2020.svg. It is, however, still in use at the Hungarian Wikipedia. I just changed the image at the Wikidata entry for the radio station, but somebody with a knowledge of Hungarian should make the edit at Wikipedia to explain the change in the edit summary. After that, you may want to open a deletion request for File:NPO 3FM logo 2020.svg. De728631 (talk) 22:15, 22 August 2021 (UTC)

Wrong Credit

Hello, Ive just created my first Wiki Article about the photographer Hanna Putz. I have uploaded a file and wrote the wrong credit as I credited it to the artist who made the collage Daniel Richter who approved for me to use the work for the article of Mrs.Putz. However the Copyright to this works seems to be at VG Bild-Kunst. How can I change this or how can I delete the old image with the wrong credit/Copyright and upload the new one? Thanks for your help!Anno — Preceding unsigned comment added by AnnoYMWD (talk • contribs) 10:28, 22 August 2021 (UTC)

@AnnoYMWD: You can edit a file page just like any other page. BUT please understand, someone approving you "to use the work for the article" is not enough for the work to appear on Commons. The copyright-holder must issue a specific free license that extends even to derivative and commercial works. They can do that in one of two manners:
  • They can indicate the license for the image on a website that is clearly under their control.
  • They can go through the process described at COM:VRT.
If the piece is derivative work, then we need sign-off from all relevant copyright-holders.

Muchas gracias.

Dear Sirs of Wikipedia:

Consulting the page of Cardinal Anastasio Alberto Ballestero, who died in 1998, I saw that there was only one photo and it was out of focus.

I searched the internet and I found a black and white photo (without any reference to copyright) and another in color that, by name, seemed to be copyrighted.

I only uploaded the photo in soft and black since if the cardinal died in 1998, the photo is 23 years old or older, and without any copyright.

My question is: how to know if a photo, or any other material, is copyrighted if nothing is explicitly indicated?

Thank you.

Hi there,

I'm an employee of a company, and I'm trying to upload the company's logos on to Wikimedia. I have obtained permission from the company to upload the logo, but I'm not sure what license it falls under or how to identify that in my upload and submission. Could you help me with this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ohsnapitswinnie (talk • contribs) 20:23, 23 August 2021 (UTC)

  • @Ohsnapitswinnie: Permission must come from the copyright-older or (if that's a company) their representative, and it must be for a specific license that must allow derivative works and commercial use (though it can require attribution and if the logo is trademarked, that is a separate issue and can be indicated with {{Trademarked}}). Generally, the least generous license we allow is {{Cc-by-sa 4.0}}.
  • The simplest way for a company to offer their (copyrighted) logo under that license is to indicate on their own website that the logo is available under that license. At that point, anyone can upload it here citing that page as source.
  • The other way to do this is the process outlined at COM:VRT. Someone representing the company can send a license release as described there. Again, it must indicate a specific license, and must allow derivative works and commercial use. - Jmabel ! talk 23:19, 23 August 2021 (UTC)

How to separate different revisions of a file to spearate files?

Hi all

I've recently been working with part of the EU to open license some of their content on Commons, to my knowledge this is only the second EU organisation to openly license content.

A user has made a completely new graph using data from one of the files, but has uploaded it as a new version of the file, not as a separate file so the graphic the EU has uploaded can't be used.

File:An increase in natural disasters, damage to the environment and rising temperatures are the biggest concerns for Europeans..svg

Please could someone who knows how to do it separate this into another file?

Thanks very much

Image incorrectly identifies athletes

I originally posted this to Wibramuc, the uploader of this image. I noticed that this uploaded image is mislabeled and contains different people than what is identified in the file name. As a result the file is being used incorrectly on various wikipedia language site for Katie Zaferes. The original creator of the image notes, the women racing are competing in the U23 Women's race, not the Women's Elite race and thus the numbers don't correctly correspond to the racers in the file name. You can also tell this by looking at the partial names on the jerseys and how they align with the race results (full results found here [5]). There are some other indirect clues that the image is identified incorrectly, but I'll leave it at that. I initially picked up on this as #22, originally identified as Katie Zaferes (nee Hursey), doesn't look like her (the women's triathlon 2020 Olympic bronze medalist). At first, I was going to take action and possibly move the file (to reflect the proper people identified) but fear that this is probably not the right response especially as multiple language pages use this image for the Zaferes article, especially following her recent Olympic medal. As I noted in its changed description the image actually contains the athletes Fumika Matsumoto (JPPN), Maria Cristina Farez Pucha (ECU), Sofie Hooghe (BEL), Deborah Lynch (NZL). My question is on what the recommended best course of action is. Outright deletion seems wrong as the image could be used on other pages (e.g. Sofie Hooghe German page). Should it just be remove from each Katie Zaferes page across the Wiki environment? Any thoughts or guidance would be appreciated. Thanks. Barkeep (talk) 01:15, 26 August 2021 (UTC)

The image should be removed because the current name is misleading. Yes, you are right it should also be removed from the pages that incorrectly use it. Ruslik (talk) 07:44, 26 August 2021 (UTC)

Need help with File:B morse code.ogg

Commons has a complete series of Morse code .ogg files, as found at Morse code. I noticed that the sample for the letter 'B', is inconsistent in sound quality with all the others, being muffled sounding, with static. Looking into the file history, it appears that the 'B' file is from an earlier version than the other letters etc, due to an entirely unexplained revert done back in January 2020. [6] I attempted to restore the correct, sharper-sounding, file with this edit, [7], but it doesn't seem to have had the desired effect, which was to restore the version of 30 March 2014 to be consistent with the other files, which were apparently all updated in 2014. Could someone more familiar with file reverting perhaps sort this out for me, and/or explain how the revert process is supposed to be done? AndyTheGrump (talk) 12:47, 29 August 2021 (UTC)

I think you did everything correctly, and the current sound is the better quality one. You might have a cached file in your browser though which means you still hear the "old" sound. Try listening to the sound on a different browser, or a different device, or delete all cache, and it should probably change. --Taktaal (talk) 10:49, 30 August 2021 (UTC)

convert PDF to JPEG?

I just uploaded an image from NASA which turned out to be a PDF (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pluto_Nomenclature.pdf). This seems like a bad way to present images, and Commons doesn't like it either ("Privacy considerations: PDF is a complex format that may expose some of your private information in some cases. Make sure to configure your PDF viewer in a safe way").

So, my question is, is it worth converting this to a jpeg? And if so, is there any better way than just making a screenshot of it?

Thanks, Danbloch (talk) 21:12, 24 August 2021 (UTC)

@Danbloch: converting to JPEG or taking a screenshot would ‘freeze’ the separate components into a simple image, at a fixed resolution, making it much more difficult to edit (e.g. to translate into other languages or to highlight a particular feature) while degrading the text & graticule. It would be much better to convert it to SVG, which format can preserve all the information in the PDF.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 09:23, 25 August 2021 (UTC)
@Danbloch: Oftentimes I use the com:CropTool to convert a pdf to a jpg on commons. Zoozaz1 (talk) 12:43, 25 August 2021 (UTC)

Cordialement, — Preceding unsigned comment added by AndreaRestols (talk • contribs) 21:28, 24 August 2021 (UTC)

photos

Hi there, would I be allowed to upload photos taken by my (deceased) great grandfather, taken late 1800-early 1900s?

Thank you.

  • Photos should be within Commons project scope. (In my observation photos taken more than 100 years ago often are since they might illustrate not just the narrow subject being photographed but also the fashions and conditions of a different era.) Were the photos previously published? If so copyright considerations can come in to it - different depending on what country, and the date of publication. Commons:Copyright_rules_by_territory has details; feel free to ask for help selecting the correct license as long as you know the when and where (what country and at least approximate year). If the photos were never published, and you are the heir with authority to license them, you may license them as you see fit - just try to be accurate and honest about authorship etc. You can make your decision about if you wish to use their real name or simply attribute "great grandfather of..." or "deceased relative of..." Some people use {{PD-heirs}} for inherited family photos; I sometimes use attribution licenses for inherited photos by deceased ancestors with attribution to "Family photos of Infrogmation". Cheers, -- 14:56, 25 August 2021 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Infrogmation (talk • contribs)
  • @Meri Oakwood: If you are the heir to the relevant intellectual property rights, then you can get around any copyright issues by offering a license such as {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}. - Jmabel ! talk 15:32, 25 August 2021 (UTC)

Adding Article To Wikipedia Without Violating The Policies

Hello,

I recently published an informative article about the International Atlantic Economic Society (IAES). I took a long time to proofread this article and make sure it was not paraphrased too closely to the information on the website of the organization (www.iaes.org). I took great care to write this article using my own words. However, for example the list of Presidents and Distinguished Associates was also found on the website (www.iaes.org). This only serves for informational purposes and with no advertising or marketing intent. Please let me know how to re-submit this article that contains information about the organization, without it appearing to be an advertisement or marketing campaign?

Thank you, I appreciate your help. Veronica Veronica at IAES (talk) 13:45, 26 August 2021 (UTC)— Preceding unsigned comment added by Veronica at IAES (talk • contribs) 13:43, 26 August 2021 (UTC)

Saving image map edit

Hi everyone! I am trying to use the ImageMapEdit feature in Wikimedia Commons after I activated the ImageMapEdit gagdet. It all looks really useful and intuitive, until the moment of saving/publishing my edit in a .jpg file... Actually, where is the "Save" button?? I hope I did not miss something. Thanks Iñaki LL (talk) 15:04, 26 August 2021 (UTC)

@Iñaki LL: maybe m:ImageMapEdit Howto might help.--RZuo (talk) 11:06, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
@RZuo: Yes, I did check that, the key is in the Edit section, but the final Paste option (after importing the wikicode) implies also pasting "File:", which creates another picture on top of the existing one, usually appearing below the image itself. I am far from being a savvy editor in Commons, so I may be missing sth, but still do not see the solution. Regards Iñaki LL (talk) 11:16, 27 August 2021 (UTC)

Uploading a logo to update to its latest design

Hi, I have a question regarding to logo. How do I upload a logo obtained from an official website, in this case, a university logo, but I don't quite understand how the copyright rules work and I'm afraid to infringe one. The reason I need to upload is because I would like to update the university logo attached on the Wikipedia page to its latest design, because the current one used on its Wikipedia page is very outdated and also not the correct one, thus I believe it needs to be changed. Is it okay to upload as long as I attach the URL source and the university as the author? What else I should and shouldn't do? Thank you for the response. --Hananfahrezi (talk) 07:23, 27 August 2021 (UTC)

@Hananfahrezi: basically an image can be uploaded here only if (1) its copyright expired, (2) the logo design is too simple, or (3) its copyright holder has released it under a free licence.--RZuo (talk) 11:06, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
Also: never overwrite with what is an essentially different image. If it is, for some reason, OK to upload this, do so under a different name and then replace in Wikipedia. The latter can be done via User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands. - Jmabel ! talk 15:03, 27 August 2021 (UTC)

Releasing Copyrights on a web article

Hi all, I would like to release the copyright permissions on a web article for which I have already been in contact with the author. He is happy for me to release this to OTRS but I can't see the best way to do this? Do I need to attach this as a file? or can I just send the website URL to OTRS releasing the permissions. Any advice would be welcome... Thanks Jameshancock01 (talk) 09:59, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

@Jameshancock01: Hi, and welcome. Which website URL is that? Have you read VRT yet?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:00, 6 August 2021 (UTC)
The related URL's are https://elements.cloud/2016/06/01/upn/ & https://elements.cloud/2020/06/08/the-evolution-of-process-diagramming-i-e-why-flowcharts-are-so-1980s/ .
Thanks for your speedy reply, Jameshancock01 (talk) 11:14, 6 August 2021 (UTC)
@Jameshancock01: Ideally, the author should send permission via VRT, but you can start the process by replying to him with a carbon copy to VRT. See also COM:TALK.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:24, 6 August 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel: If it is possible we would like to release the permissions on wikipedia rather than changing our website as we just want to release specific articles. @Choojvdoopie: You don't have to remove any categories. Template:Kościerzyna by century didn't show anything because Category:Kościerzyna in the 21st century did not have any entries. Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photos as a new user while leaving the summary intact, and Special:AbuseFilter/156 by trying to upload smaller (<50,000 bytes) jpg photos as a new user. Each jpg photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photos yourself, please upload the full-size originals of them per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photos, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept them, and have the photographer(s) license them on their official websites or social media or send the photos and permissions via VRT with carbon copies to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photos may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid filter 153.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:44, 28 August 2021 (UTC)

Please Change Help Save Faith to Bhavana

  Hello,
Can you please help me change my Wikipedia user account name from Help Save Faith to Bhavana,
                                                    Bhavana
  Bhāvanā (Pali;[1] Sanskrit, also bhāvana[2]) literally means "development"[3] or "cultivating"[4] or "producing"[1] [2] in
the sense of "calling into existence".[5] It is an important concept in Buddhist praxis (Patipatti). The word Bhavana normally
appears in conjunction with another word forming a compound phrase such as Citta-Bhavana (the development or cultivation
of the heart/mind) or metta-Bhavana (the development/cultivation of lovingkindness). When used on its own, Bhavana
  signifies contemplation and 'spiritual cultivation'
To explain the cultural context of the historical Buddha's employment of the term, Glenn Wallis emphasizes Bhavana's sense
of cultivation. He writes that a farmer performs Bhavana when he or she prepares soil and plants a seed. Wallis infers the
Buddha's intention with this term by emphasizing the terrain and focus on farming in northern India at the time in the
following passage: I imagine that when Gotama, the Buddha, chose this word to talk about meditation, he had in mind the
ubiquitous farms and fields of his native India. Unlike our words 'meditation' or 'contemplation,' Gotama’s term is musty,
rich, and verdant. It smells of the earth. The commonness of his chosen term suggests naturalness, everydayness, ordinariness.
The term also suggests hope: no matter how fallow it has become, or damaged it may be, a field can always be cultivated —
endlessly enhanced, enriched, developed — to produce a favorable and nourishing harvest.[6]

Can I upload an image that's freely available on the web of a public figure?

If the image is of someone who's been in news articles and such, can I use an image from these websites and upload it to their page, if they don't currently have an image on Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Holmsey124 (talk • contribs) 01:56, 29 August 2021 (UTC)

(Edit conflict)@Holmsey124: probably not—freely available is not the same as freely licensed. Unless there’s a statement to the contrary, we assume any photo on the Web to be copyrighted (unless the original is more than 120 years old). The English Wikipedia (like a few other projects) allows uploading of non-free content in some cases, but only when there is no free alternative, and it’s presumed that living people could be yet photographed by someone willing to provide such.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 02:18, 29 August 2021 (UTC)

Joshua Project's copyright status

The Joshua Project makes maps regarding linguistics and the location of where a certain language's speakers are located at. In their page they say that maps made by themselves are non-copyrighted material and "can be used without further permission", but they also state "Joshua Project information is intended for non-commercial missions research and educational use only.". So can these maps, such as this one[11]enter Wikimedia? I believe the licensing here is incorrect, should the file be deleted or the licensing changed? How to get permission for a specific personal picture to be added to commons?

I'm building a wikipedia article about a living person. What would that person have to do to give permission that one of his pictures to be added to commons? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sribera (talk • contribs) 16:45, 31 August 2021 (UTC)

Hello. The copyright holder of the picture needs to email a permission to our Volunteer Response Team. Please note that copyright is usually not held by the person depicted, but by the original photographer. So, unless there was a written transfer of copyright, we need a permission from the photographer that allows anyone to use the image for any purpose. Please check this list of appropriate licenses for reference. De728631 (talk) 16:55, 31 August 2021 (UTC)

@Nikhilthemacho: Achim55 actually reverted your talk page. What you were talking about was some random anonymous IP address threatening you. It was just a single edit from that IP address, no apparent coherence whatsoever, so I wouldn't pay much attention to these trolls, they don't deserve it. Unless you've got a really personal and very dangerous threat in your inbox, this is just a silent scream into the void. I'd start with precautions when it really becomes personal and becomes evident that person knows your address or a private detail of your life, or he becomes too annoying to ignore. One simple block should be enough. If not, and even after that the person in question finds a way to harras you, I'd contact authorities. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 12:07, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply. Apologies for my misunderstanding about Achim55. However my concern is: I have expressed my opinions about current Russia-Ukraine conflict on some other social media. And my email on that social media is not the same as on Wikipedia. So how did that anonymous user link my views there to my ID on Wikipedia? This is concerning for me. Because I always take strong cyber-safety practices like password managers, vpns etc. Even on that social media platform, I have a fictitious name which cannot be linked to me directly. May be just a coincidence, may be social engineering, or simply deducted identity from writing style and what not. I wouldn't personally be paranoid about some kind of hacker. If he was, he would threaten you directly. But if you still have concerns about your safety, just contact authorities. About your opinions about current conflict: Don't forget that supporting the attacker side may be illegal in your country. Personally, I think that both sides are somewhat guilty for this situation. However, it was still possible to solve diplomatic way. Putin just showed his impatience and hot thinking, and now he's completely blinded by rage. That's the biggest issue and that's what made so many people hate Putin. I agree that the West was nitpicking to Russia and naturally, Putin wasn't quite pleased. However, invading a soverein country and opening a blatant war there? Shooting civilians? That's simply disgusting. As much as I hated the pressure from USA to the Central and Eastern Europe, I would never assume that would be a reason to commit a war crime. Plus, trying to hide the truth to own citizens? That's cowardness. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 07:28, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
