Error with template on File:Entrepreneur's Barnstar.png

After uploading this image, I found that the template for copyright was not displaying correctly on the page. Later, a bot added that I did not have appropriate copyright information (obviously due to the fact that the tag didn't work). How do I make this template work? Best way to upload books

What would be the best way to upload these two books to Commons [1][2]? They are both filled with images useful to those who are interested in geometry in art, and written by Samuel Colman who was a notable artist of his time. They are both out of copyright. Note that if you want the images to be usable for Commons, they need to be cut out and uploaded separately, as PNGs or JPEGs. Just uploading them as PDF or DJVU is not very useful if your goal is to make the images available--Prosfilaes (talk) 01:45, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

I got a nikbot telling me I got the license wrong, so I revised it, but I can't tell if it is right.

As a newbie I found the initial contribution of a picture very confusing.

Wikimedia Commons can be confusing for the new user, but this is true of every other collaborative volunteer project I have seen. For example, start a stopwatch and see how long it takes to figure out how to upload your GPS tracks to OpenStreetMap and edit the map. With all these projects, the trick is to read at least the beginner manuals (Commons:First steps) and take notes. And also find your way to the Help desk early and often. But judging from (probably) your user page on the English Wikipedia and User:MikeDunlavey/Difex Article you have more than enough experience to know that.
File:Difex.JPG lacks any license template (or categories) at the moment.
  • First we hunt for categories. The description you wrote is a bit narrow in that it might only make sense to someone specialized in the relevant field (e.g., execution of what?). To the extent possible, we should write for a general audience, by leaving enough clues to let someone without the background knowledge know where to find it. A search on Wikipedia finds the relevant term "differential execution" in the Serialization article. Presumably that's what we're talking about here. So we look for existing media files on Commons relating to that topic. There is probably a subcategory in the Category:Computing tree (or its Category:Software engineering subtree) that would contain them. For the time being I categorized your image into Category:Software engineering because I don't recognize a more specific category. If that is not an appropriate choice, you can edit the category yourself, or suggest a better one here if the syntax looks too confusing.
  • Now to the license. See Commons:Project scope, COM:L, and COM:EIC#Ctags. Your basic choices for licensing would be: {{PD-self}} if you want to put your image into the public domain and you don't care about acknowledgment from people who reuse it; or something like {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}} and {{GFDL}} if you want acknowledgment. Here is how to add the latter; if you want something else, edit the image file page.
  • You uploaded a diagram as a JPEG file. {{PNG}} is a better raster format for diagrams, but SVG is an even better (vector) format for diagrams. See COM:EIC#Inkscape and Commons:Transition to SVG if you weren't busy enough already.

File extension does not match MIME type

I keep getting the error "File extension does not match MIME type" when I try to upload a new version of a current file. It is ridiculous and I cannot seem to upload anything without getting this error. Can someone explain this to me in nonprofessional terms and tell me what to do to fix the problem? Thanks! Is this happening with a specific file only or with all files? It seems like the file you are uploading is of a type which does not correspond to the file extension. Try uploading the file to a one-click-hoster, say Rapidshare or similar, and link it here, so we can have a look at it. Regards, -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 11:50, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

The first one is a large file saved as progressive jpeg. See COM:VP#Rokeby Venus by Diego Velázquez for a similar problem.

Uploading a Historic Image

I would like to know if it is ok to upload an image whose copyright status is unknown. It is claimed that the photo was taken in 1902-03 and belongs to the archives of British Library. Further the photos have British Library marked on it. Hello!

Is there a function on Commons with which you can show all pictures in a category with all pictures who are in the categorys under the main category. I mean for example I want to see all pictures in the Category:Bulgaria with the pictures in the Category:Architecture of Bulgaria at the same time in one and the same homepage? --A.Ceta (talk) 14:24, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

There are CatScan (a link on every category page left to the search box) and CatScan2 (a link on category pages can be activated through a gadget in Special:Preferences). They can be used to list files in categories and subcategories.
For the specific sample, it wont work well as Architecture has just one file and Bulgaria quite a few files that probably should go elsewhere, but, e.g. CatScan on Buildings in Bulgaria is interesting. -- User:Docu at 15:50, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Special Air Service

Hi the Special Air Service article is going through a [Article review] and it been mentioned that the image File:SASWings.png and the cap badge image right may not be released under GDFL. This would probably fall under PD-UK-Gov, but it might be worth checking on Commons to have it clarified. Someone might know on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. If the badge design is old enough, it might fall under {{PD-UKGov}}. The Special Air Service traces its origins to WWII but the creation date of this badge design is not clear. You might have to contact the SAS and ask. No longer seeing the QPreview option

AFAIK my option to use the new features is on, although I am using previous skin. However I no longer see the QPreview button when editing, which I am starting to miss. Did something change? BrokenSphere 21:39, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

Deletion of ""public domain" photos

A user, Moc trojan, uploaded a lot of "Public Domain" photos to Wikipedia, and I am positive the user didn't take them. All of the photos in question deals with the East Carolina University campus. None of these houses or places are found on campus or in the city of the university. I already found one of his "public domain" photos from the actual source by TinEye, but the other ones are coming up empty. The user created a couple of articles, that were deleted, and these photos were on there. What is the proper procedure to get them deleted? The photos in question are:

Pictures on User Profile

Hi Mantlewood. First of all, navigate to your userpage and click on edit. Then you can insert the image like this: [[File:Anas-strepera-001.jpg|200px]]. The number behind the image (in this case 200) controls the size of the image. If you want to have a gallery of images, use the Commons:Galleries option. Amada44 (talk) 09:36, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

I think that is just an example link that you are supposed to edit with the file name of the image for which you want the thumbnail to refresh. If I understand the intent of that section correctly, then a cleaner way to present that example would be to use the {{urlencode}} magic word to URL-encode the image file name instead of asking the user to manually URL-encode it. (That's the standard method in external link templates such as {{Flickr free}}.) What image are you not able to update? Tell us the image file name and we'll show you how to edit it into the sample URL. Also note that sometimes purging the image page causes the image to update. The FAQ entry could be clearer. It would be nice if we could make a form or a template or something that would let the user copy and paste a filename to generate the proper link. Instead, we currently show a link that the user is not really supposed to click on, but rather copy and edit. It's a bit confusing. When people look to the FAQ, their short term memory will typically already be occupied with the problem that led them to seek help with the FAQ. That limits a person's ability to decode any extra levels of abstraction in the FAQ entry. The FAQ entry should be as direct and simple as possible, requiring a minimum of inference and interpretation from the user. I created a {{Regenerate thumbnail}} template which seems to work. I added a mention of it to the COM:FAQ#PURGE section. If the template is reliable enough, it could replace the manual edit method altogether. Licensing information for an Image already uploaded

I have found various vintage images during random Google search and would like to upload it to Wikicommons. These images are mostly about Hyderabad and as per information available on these sites, these images are atleast 100 years old. Various images by this same author and of similar vintage by other authors have already been uploaded on Wikicommons (Category:Deen Dayal & Category:Historical images of Hyderabad). However during uploading an image, I could not fill the licensing information required appropriately. This image was reportedly created in 1880. You are requested to let me know what exactly should be selected in Licensing? The image is named File:Parade Grounds, Secunderabad 1880.jpg. This image is already uploaded. Regards

Problem with license

In this case, the copyright status of the photo depends on: who created the photo, who owns the copyright today, where the photo was taken, and whether and when it was first published. The photo is not yet old enough for the copyright to have expired in all cases. There are lots of old photos floating around with unclear authorship, and we cannot assume they are automatically free content. Much of what Commons users have written about copyright and licensing is linked from COM:EIC#Copyright. See for example:

Tell us what photo you want to delete, why you want to delete it, what instructions you followed, and where you got stuck. Presumably you followed COM:D. There are many possibilities depending on who uploaded the photo (you, or someone else), whether the photo is in use on any Wikimedia Foundation projects, and why you want to delete it. Depending on the cause for deletion, it may qualify for speedy deletion, or it may require discussion from the community. If the photo is heavily used, deleting it may require someone to do a lot of work to clean up damage to pages that use it. --Teratornis (talk) 08:18, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

I would like to delete the file titled, "LTG Cone Iraqi Army Pesh Federal Police.JPG". Additionally, there are three thumbnail versions of this file on this page: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LTG_Cone_Iraqi_Army_Pesh_Federal_Police.JPG - I would like all three thumbnail versions of this file deleted as well. The reason is that LTG Cone requested that I, as his representative, delete the file. Initially I had tried to follow the speedy deletion instructions by typing in {{speedydelete|reason}} but apparently I didn't type that in the right place or in the proper manner. Its public-domain file as its the work of the US goverment, copyright wise I think we're entitled to keep it, the only reason I can see to delete it is if it endangered the safety or otherwise compromised individuals depicted in the file (the maps on the walls and documents seem to have already been censored, so I see no harm there).--KTo288 (talk) 08:59, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
Right. I'll just add that we don't need these images; there's plenty of properly released images of "Robert W. Cone"/"Robert Cone" at www.dvidshub.net (site needs registration to get hi-res photos without watermarks, but registration is free; it's a U.S. Army website; the large majority of the material posted is PD-USGov (unless maybe produced by contractors, but that should be noted where it is the case)) or also at www.defenseimagery.mil, or even some at Flickr. You uploaded File:Hoar frost feathers.jpg. Click on this blue link here, then click on the "edit"-tab at the top of that page. An edit page will open. Scroll the text input area to the bottom and add "[[Category:Hoar frost]]" (without the quotes) at the end of the text. Remove the line saying "{{Uncategorized|year=2010|month=June|day=6}}" from the text. Fill in an edit summary describing your edit (something like "add category", or "categorize", or "add [[Category:Hoar frost]]") and click on the "save" button. Done. Lupo 14:02, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

Downloading an image

The same as you would download an image from any Web site: browse to the image you want, right click on it, and select "Save image as..." in your Web browser. Different browsers may use different words to describe this command. On Wikimedia Commons, if the image has a large pixel size, the image page will show a lower resolution preview. If you want to download the original image size, you have to browse to it first. Some users may have trouble downloading very large images, I think, particularly over a slow Internet connection. If you want to reuse the image, see COM:REUSE. What image are you trying to download and are you having trouble? --Teratornis (talk) 03:55, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

Threshold of originality tag

add contemporary artist

Wikipedia recommends to use wikimedia to upload the artist's info page.

As webmaster for artist Mimi Stuart for 12 years I consider her artwork as some of the finest. I should have done it long ago, but didn't think of it. Some of her artwork is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian and the San Diego Air & Space Museums. How can I upload her page? I've put together the information page in accordance with the Wikipedia format and have ascertained the accuracy of all facts, but does one claim authorship for that?

This is Wikimedia Commons, a collection of free images. We would be happy to host any of her artwork she is willing to license under a license that freely permits the making of derivative works and commercial use. If you are looking to upload an encyclopedic article about the author, you need to go to Wikipedia, but I suggest you read and understand Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, which would strongly discourage someone with your relationship to the artist from writing that article.--Prosfilaes (talk) 16:06, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
You can request that someone else write an article on Wikipedia:Requested articles. Writing new articles from scratch on Wikipedia can be surprisingly hard for someone editing on Wikipedia for the first time, because there are so many rules for the content which is acceptable, and how to structure the articles and cite sources. The best way to learn Wikipedia editing is to start by making small edits to existing articles. For example, Wikipedia may have articles about topics that touch on Mimi Stuart's work, where the artist could be mentioned briefly. For general background please read WP:BIO, WP:BLP, WP:V, WP:RS, WP:CITE, WP:FOOT, and WP:LAYOUT. As the webmaster for the artist you could be uniquely qualified to make a list of reliable published sources about her. The limiting factor in writing Wikipedia articles is typically finding the sources we can cite. Note that the sources should be independent of the subject. Uploading a Screenshot, what license?

Do not upload. Game Center is not licensed under any free content license, Screenshots of non-free software aren't accepted on Commons as this project is dedicated to free content only. Free means free to use by anyone, anytime, for any purpose including commercial purposes. See Commons:Project scope#Must be freely licensed or public domain and Commons:Screenshots. --Martin H. Copyright on photo of statue

According to the rules, a photo I have taken of a statue cannot be regarded as acceptable under Creative Commons. See COM:CB#3D art (sculptures etc.), Help:Public domain, Commons:Hirtle chart, Commons:Freedom of panorama, Commons:De minimis, and other links under COM:EIC#Copyright. If you want specific advice, indicate the statue, the sculptor, its location, and age. Wikipedia:Media copyright questions may be a better place to ask if you don't get a clear answer here. Copyright length

If a Japanese publishes a work in Japan which protects copyrights for life+50years, how many years after author's death his work are protected in U.S ? life+50ys or life+70ys, which is right? (in case other conditions are not considered) In other words, if the Japanese author dies in 2000, can other people in Japan upload his work to Commons in 2051 ?--Wow123 (talk) 14:15, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

I hope nothing like copyright law in its current form will still exist in 2051. By then there will be two whole generations having grown up with the technological capability to create, copy, and publish anything. Our existing copyright laws date from the days of the printing press, when only a small percentage of people had a meaningful ability to copy and publish. Copyright law is getting laughably out of step with the way most people actually use information. Maybe someday the majority will vote to legalize what they are all doing. File:Wikipedia aus spieltheoretischer Sicht.pdf

Text really large

When I made a file in Inkscape, I put the text in a certain place, so it wouldn't overlap over items. When I uploaded the .svg to Commons, the text is larger then in the file I had on Commons. See File:Map of GDP per capita in the EU in 2007 (NUTS 3).svg, cmopared to the bitmap which was exported by Inkscape. The bitmap is how it should look. Jolly Janner (talk) 02:42, 13 June 2010 (UTC)

Weird black box on SVG file

File:SCPA Cincinnati Map.svg looks fine in Inkscape, but renders on Commons with a weird black rectangle at the bottom. I tried uploading it as a plain SVG and vacuuming the <defs>, but those did not work. Can someone more experienced than me please take a look? We have an {{OpenStreetMap}} template you can use on the image page. It has some advantages over editing the general {{Information}} template when the image is a map from OpenStreetMap. Das Logo ist komplex genug um unter die Schöpfungshöhe zu fallen. So weit ich weiß sind Bilder der Kirche unter keinem besonderen copyright, d.h. du musst wohl erst mal von den eine Erlaubniss besorgen; siehe COM:OTRS--DieBuche (talk) 14:34, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
Wahrscheinlich wird es in der deutschen Wikipedia unter de:Vorlage:Bild-LogoSH akzeptiert. Die Regeln auf Wikipedia sind allerdings mitlerweile sehr locker, ich vermute fast, dass mit dem Baustein (der den von dem Baustein gemeinten Urheberrechtsstatus überhaupt nicht richtig anspricht) eine Form von Fair-Use in de.wp eingeführt wurde. Auf Commons sind die Regeln nicht so locker, die Schöpfungshöhe bemisst sich nicht nur nach deutschem Urheberrecht, die Schwelle zur Kreativität ist also deutlichst niedriger, und Fair-Use gibt es hier nicht. --Martin H. I'm a model and I've uploaded some images about my job to put what i've done and i didn't find out how to license them because it was confusing... because those images are part of my job but i'm not use to see the licenses of my portfolio. The "Recommended" License

The upload "your own work" form offers the recommended choice to multi-license GFDL and CC-BY-SA. I was wondering what the reason for this is, and if there is any advantage over using CC-BY-SA only. Thanks, Fletcher6 (talk) 13:29, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

CC-BY-SA is not compatible with the GFDL; in general, any two copyleft licenses aren't compatible. If you want users working on GFDL materials to be able to use your images, you need to license it under the GFDL. I don't believe that the GFDL is strictly more restrictive than CC-BY-SA, but in practice the only thing to be concerned about with the multi-license is that it means that your work can end up as part of a GFDL-only work that can't be taken back as CC-BY-SA.--Prosfilaes (talk) 14:14, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

Lots of software projects are licensed under the GFDL. Someone might want to reuse media from Commons in a GFDL-licensed software project. Generally speaking, people are numerous and diverse, and you never know what someone might think of doing in the future. That's... weird. The only possible explanations I can think of are that either a) the file you downloaded got corrupted somehow, or b) there's a bug in the Windows ZIP extractor. You could check the file's integrity using md5sum -b: mine says e80a5544fd888487f165305c2c01f599. Uploading Collage

I've created a collage from files available at commons to be uploaded and used in a specific article. Tried doing so using Derivative FX to get the licensing straight, but there seemed to be a problem with the program. I guess that's been fixed, but now I don't remember how I got there! Ok, so where's the button/program, and are there other options to get help with getting the licenses and sources right when uploading a collage? The upload with "It is a derivative work of a file from Commons" in Commons:Upload works, the tool tells you that you are not logged in, but that a bug possibly, it will work, just ignore the error. You can edit the image page just like any other page, by clicking "edit". The template does not mention stamps specifically, so we must assume that the the conditions mentioned there hold for stamps as well. As most stamps will be artistic in nature, that would be: ... more than twenty five years have elapsed since the year of authors death and fifty years have elapsed since the year of publication. Stamps might be public domain, but I really couldn't find any evidence for that. Stamps appear to be issued by GPTC, so you might get some information from them. --rimshottalk 06:12, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Der Prozess ist, dass der Uploader die Datei hochlädt und sie, wenn sie schonmal Andernorts veröffentlicht wurde, mit {{OTRS pending|year=2010|month=June|day=17}} markiert, diese Vorlage steht im Upload-Formular, und die schriftliche Freigabe ans OTRS weiterletet. Damit ist kenntlich gemacht, dass eine schriftliche Freigabe des Urhebers besteht. Wenn die Freigabe beim OTRS angekommen ist und geprüft wurde - das kann etwas dauern, es handelt sich auch dort um die Arbeit von freiwilligen Mitarbeitern - wird der OTRS-Mitarbeiter die Freigabe entsprechend auf der Bildbeschreibungsseite kenntlich machen, hierzu wird er die Vorlage {{PermissionOTRS}} verwenden. Verwandten geerbt). Ein OTRS-Ticket werde ich von ihm wohl nicht bekommen, da er mit Computern nichts am Hut hat. Zur Lizenz: Unter der Lizenz, die der Rechteinhaber gewählt hat, einer freien Lizenz zustimmen muss dein Kontakt auf jeden Fall. Zur Freigabe: Besteht die Möglichkeit, eine kurze schriftliche Freigabe zu erreichen und diese ebenfalls zu scannen und an COM:OTRS zu senden oder einfach mit kurzer Erläuterung per Post an Wikimedia zu schicken, die die Freigabe dann digital im OTRS archivieren können? Beachte, dass eine Freigabe zur Nutzung 'in der WP' nicht ausreichend ist, siehe die Vorlage zur Einveständnisserklärung. Diese Standardvorlage sollte verwendet werden und kann natürlich von dir freundlicher/weniger formell umformuliert werden um z.B. die wunderbare Absicht deines Vorhabens - die Erhaltung und Weitergabe historischer Aufnahmen - hervorheben. Template syntax help

Hi, I am working on the template {{Taxasource}}. This template uses {{PAGENAME}} to construct a link to an external web site.
Exemple: on page Category:Botaurinae, the template creates a link named "ADW" to http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/search?category=Classification&SearchableText=Botaurinae.
It works perfectly except on pages like Trias (Orchidaceae).
My question: is there a way to automatically transform the {{PAGENAME}} containing "Trias (Orchidaceae)" into "Trias" (simply getting read of the "(Orchidaceae)" part)?
Exactly as the en:Help:Pipe trick does transform [[g (factor)|]] into [[g (factor)|g]] (but trick is done by wiki save mechanism + only for internal links, not in templates).

One way would be to generalize the template with an optional input item for the species name, which if blank would default to the pagename. Then for pages that have names that have extra characters after the species name, you would call the template with the species name you want. See Help:Magic words and mw:Help:Extension:ParserFunctions. To do this automatically would require the mw:Extension:StringFunctions which I don't think is implemented on Wikimedia Foundation wikis such as Commons. --Teratornis (talk) 18:06, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
See for example Template:Commons category which generates a link that defaults to the page name on the English Wikipedia as the link destination category on Commons, but allows for the user to override the category name and the displayed link text. Most if not all listings on that page cite either the copyright law of a country, or a statement from its central banking authority. You can try the following:
  • Ask on Commons talk:Currency. And read the existing discussion to get an idea of how other Commons users have researched this for other countries.
  • Contact the central banks of Iran and Iraq to find out the copyright status of their currency.
  • Look on their official government Web sites for the relevant section of their copyright statutes.
  • Ask an attorney.
  • Look for existing images of currency from Iran and Iraq on Commons and see how it is licensed. That doesn't necessarily prove the licensing is correct, but it might shed some light. Start with the Iraqi dinar and Iranian rial articles on the English Wikipedia. It looks like the Iraqi dinar image on the English Wikipedia is under a fair use rationale. That won't do on Commons.

If I want to download an image, and it is under copyright the best way is that I should send the author of the image an email in order to ask if I can upload it to Commons. Urheberrecht Foto

Genügt es, wenn mir der Urheber eines Fotos schriftlich erklärt, dass er auf seine Urheberrechte verzichtet? Ihm die Einzelheiten der Lizenzen zu erklären, würde ihn überfordern. Oder gibt es eine andere kurze Erklärung des Urhebers, mit der ich das Foto in Wikipedia einbringen kann. Es handelt sich um das Foto eines vor über 20 Jahren verstorbenen Malers, über den ein Wikipedia-Titel handelt. Um das Foto will ich eine ältere Dame angehen, die vermutlich Fotos von ihm gemacht hat, doch muss ich von vornherein wissen, was ich brauche, um das Foto in Wikipedia veröffentlichen zu können. Confused about licensing status of this image

Hello. I was going to upload a map of the U.S. solar energy resource potential (http://www.nrel.gov/gis/images/map_pv_national_lo-res.jpg) from the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Renewable_Energy_Laboratory to use for some solar articles on the English Wikipedia, but I got confused when I read their copyright policy (http://www.nrel.gov/disclaimer.html). I understand that most works produced by the federal government of the United States are public domain, but it seems like NREL is operated (under contract) for the U.S. Department of Energy by a private company. I read their copyright policy, but I have to admit I don't understand what they're saying. Are their works under a license (or public domain) that allows me to upload them here to Commons? The EERE publishes some material from NREL and says "Materials on the EERE Web site are in the public domain." For example, see the EERE renewable energy resource maps. The EERE site features lots of images (such as this solar energy map) which say "NREL" on them. If you want to upload something from NREL, see if the EERE has published it on their site. A simple text-only logo that uses a standard font may be trademarked, but not under copyright protection (see for example File:Boeing wordmark.svg which is too simple to be copyrighted). If the logo does meet the threshold of originality (fr:Seuil d'originalité), the copyright owner must release the logo under a free license if you want to upload a copy of it to Commons. If you refer to File:39CluesTaskForceLogo.png that looks like an unrelated case - the uploader claims the image does not meet the Threshold of originality, making it a derivative work of an image in the public domain. The site of publication is incidental. The Tracker logo does not appear to be based on any public domain image, and it might meet the threshold of originality for logos based on its artistic elements. See Commons:Image casebook#Trademarks, COM:EIC#Permreq, and COM:OTRS. You may want to read a few more manuals before starting a task force here. The success rate of new initiatives on Commons or the Wikipedias is not particularly high. Labeled image needs correcting

I really appreciate having access to this labeled map of the counties of California, but one of the county names is misspelled: it's "San Bernardino", not "San Bernadino" (which is how it's pronounced). I cleaned up the history & the one I'm hearing now is the longer version, where you hear a mouseclick on the end. If your still hearing the wrong one, its got to be some kind of cache problem. What happened?

Looking at http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Insect_External_Morphology.jpg&action=history, MiPE tried three times to upload this with Flickr upload bot. I tried to upload it once with Flickr upload it. It didn't work any of the times. Is this fixable or should I notify the bot owner? Joe Chill 2 (talk) 02:56, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

For some reason the flickr bot is unable to upload it. There is a bug that sometimes (1 of 1000 jpgs) happens when the jpg as some symbols within the first 1024 bites or so - Commons:Village_pump/Archive/2010Feb#Upload problem - I like to blame that bug for such problems ;) In such cases please download the original size from flickr and upload it manually. --Martin H. Quoting a diagram

I'd like to add a diagram to a Wikipedia article. It is from a book, and it is labelled boxes and circles connected with errors [Edit: arrows, of course ^^]. I do not want to upload an image or screenshot of that diagram, but I built my own similar to the original. See COM:DERIV and Threshold of originality. If you drew a diagram, you may upload it as your own work as long as it is not too similar to the copyrighted original. Since you have not shown us the two diagrams, we cannot guess whether your diagram is original enough. If you traced an exact copy of the original diagram, preserving layout and other graphic elements, then you would have made a derivative work and you could not upload it to Commons without permission from the original author. But if you rearranged the diagram, used different fonts, sizes, shapes, and colors, then your work could meet the threshold of originality. See Idea-expression divide. The appearance of the diagram is copyrightable (the expression), but the underlying relation between entities that the diagram represents is not copyrightable (the idea). Of course if the book is old enough, it could be out of copyright and then even a faithful reproduction or scan would be acceptable on Commons. What's wrong with the image in the Whitney Houston article? It probably reflects how Ms. Houston appeared on stage to the audience that evening. This is much better than some candid photograph taken when the performer had no expectation of being seen. For future reference, if you preview a template and it doesn't work, you could save your change anyway, and revert it. Then when you ask for help you could present the diff that did not work, and helpers could find the problem faster. See WP:MITC. If the image on the English Wikipedia is within the Commons:Project scope, then someone can move it to Commons. Incidentally, I do not think the fair use rationale was necessary for en:File:Pro7-Logo.svg, because the logo is so simple that I do not believe it meets the threshold of originality and thus cannot be copyrighted. I need help

Hello, everyone. I know this is probably explained in the Commons guidelines, and that it is irritating when users ask you again to explain something about it. I asked this an administrator, but he told me that he is very busy in this moment, and I fully understand it. So I'll repeat the question I sent him:

Hi! I often moving images from the Serbian and the English Wikipedia to Wikimedia Commons. I mainly use CommonsHelper. Even though I am administrator on the Serbian Wikipedia, I am a little confused with a licenses here. I read a few instructions, but my English is not excellent, and also the instructions are not so understandable. I like to do things well, so the other people don't have to clean after me. In addition, people often ask me for advice, because they are confused with the same thing. So I would be grateful if you could explain to me this. When I transfer the image with {{GFDL}} license, which license should I put here? Just {{cc-by-3.0}} or some dual licence? The same question applies to the following licenses: {{GFDL-self}}, {{GFDL-user}}, {{GFDL-user-w}}, and pictures with dual licence on Wikipedia ({{GFDL}} and {{cc-by-3.0}}). CommonsHelper don't do this things, so I have to manually fix the licenses. For example: this and this picture, and also this picture (these are just examples). Thanks in advance. All the best!

There is already a Lenticularis gallery on Commons, and Lenticular cloud#External links links to it. See the links under COM:EIC#Gallery. Advice page for creating featured pictures?

I'm interested in trying to take FP-quality pictures of architecture, but I can't find any guidance on reaching FP quality other than that found at Commons:Featured pictures. Is there an FAQ page for creating FPs, with pointers specifically aimed at trying to pass FP standards? I wanted to ask those who have taken FP-quality architecture pictures, but virtually all of the ones I looked at have been inactive here at Commons for many months. Your Wikipedia experience pre-dates both index pages. By the time the index pages appeared, you probably had established your work habits and knew other ways to look things up without them. Similarly, I can't imagine what problem the new Vector skin is supposed to solve, since I already know how to do what I need in Monobook. As a new editor you can't and, in general, you shouldn't. Use another filename instead.

SVG text different after upload

I uploaded this image: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RGBTriples.svg

On my computer (using Inkscape), the text is "(R,G,B)". You can see that when it was uploaded, it changed to "(,,)RGB". Anyone know why this would happen?

After perusing some documentation, it looks like the problem may be the <tspan> element. You have the "R", "G", and "B" enclosed in <tspan> tags, all within another <tspan> tag for the whole text. Firefox and Inkscape appear to treat those nested <tspan> tags differently than the MediaWiki renderer does. (Since <tspan> is used to make the placement of the text inside relative to the previous <tspan> element, it looks like MediaWiki is moving those nested tags outside of the parent <tspan>.) As a guess, I would try changing those <tspan>s to <span>s, but that's just a wild guess. Powers (talk) 13:29, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

I would think that the Global Text Project must have re-used lots of free content from other sources by now, and should have internal documents explaining how to comply with the licensing terms of such sources. (If those instructions on the Global Text Project site are not clear, maybe you could clarify them.) I've seen other wikis that re-use content from Wikipedia and Commons, and the basic approach is just to duplicate the same licensing templates used here, with links back to the original image pages here. "Photo/wiki" was never (!!!) a sufficient credit, "wiki"/Wikipedia or Wikimedia doesnt own any copyrights here. All photographs on Commons are free to reuse anywhere for any purpose as long as you follow the license requirements. See Commons:Reuse. You say that it was more simple in the past, however the copyright status of images didnt change, we only make the reuse requirements more obvious and visible so that reusers not come to the idea to credit (C)Wikipeda or so ;). E.g. for File:Mimetite-Galena-216754.jpg (random file) you have the attribution requirement Rob Lavinsky & his website and the ShareAlike requirement to redistribute any copy of the image under the same license, so you have to quote the link http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en. If you not follow this requirement your reuse is a break of the license terms and the reuse permission will terminate automatically and the copyright holder is eligible to demand a licensing fee for the wrong reuse. Some of our photos are Public Domain, you dont have to attribute. Some are Creative Commons as described in my example (Attribution and ShareAlike), some are GFDL requiring attribution, indication of the license and a fulltext copy of the full license text with every copy. Even if we would like to give you advice what you could do at WikiBooks, you should really ask there.
It is possible, probably even preferred, to upload files to Commons, even if they are only used at WikiBooks.
Even if you upload them to Commons, you could still categorize the files at WikiBooks (if that's ok with them). -- User:Docu at 08:59, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
But my question is, is there any opposition to creating a category for the files for that book at Commons? Local files at Wikibooks is rare as only uploaders can upload them, and only fair use ones. Adding a "version" of a file

Consider this file: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RGB.svg

There is a section on that page that says "other versions". If I wanted to make the background white, how would I then upload another "version" of this file? Daviddoria (talk) 13:35, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

You have to upload it with Commons:Upload (option: It is a derivative work of a file from Commons) and add a link to the newly uploaded other version to the other versions field. No, you just need to upload your own version. When you get to the derivativeFX upload form, it will ask you for the original file (which is File:RGB.svg in this case). Then follow the rest of the instructions, which is editing the contents of your own version. ZooFari 17:00, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Hello, I am quite an experienced editor on Wikipedia but I'm new to Wikimedia commons. I would like to try and get help with this image - I am trying to upload it for another user so they can put it in their article. The r is just ®, it doesn't have any incidence on the main question, but obviously it limits the usefulness of such files on Commons. You might want to read through the "The logo of an organization" part on en:Wikipedia:Upload to see if it qualifies for upload there. -- User:Docu at 12:49, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
It's not clear whether the logo meets the threshold of originality that would make it under the copyright of the creator. Categories not recognized and unlinked image

Dear Staff, I have uploaded a photograph and written about 8 categories and imported the Commons image into an article in Wiki, yet I am getting messages that my uploaded image is not linked, has no categories and in fact, is not even a file in Wiki Commons. I have written several messages in several different places and still have no idea how to reconcile what I think I did correctly with the operational notes I am receiving back. Can you please help me understand where things stand? First, please look at my submissions under samson22911 and you will see in Wiki, under Pio Pico, the section on Medical History. I just imported the image of Pio Pico 1873 and if you click on that you should see a file with all the relevant data and with a whole list of categories. So, what have I done incorrectly? Strangely, it seems the {{Uncategorized}} template and the associated bot message on the user's talk page fail to tell the user to remove the template after adding categories. The template links to instructions on how to add categories, but I don't see any obvious instruction to the (likely new) user to remove the template after fixing the problem (like this). The ambiguous use of the word "link" is also likely to confuse the new user, who won't understand that it refers specifically to category links. Also note that Wikipedia is not "Wiki", and we don't add our edit summaries to the body of an image page, but rather to the Edit summary field below the edit window. --Teratornis (talk) 22:12, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
