New Category Required?

I uploaded a group of stylized representations of graphic objects that are associated with the Dorabella Cipher (on Wikipedia). The purpose of some has yet to be identified, others are known and documented. The materials were created by me and uploaded in preparation for modifications to a Wikipedia entry on the cipher (I'm working on parts of it in my sandbox there).

I left the category entry blank because I'm not sure whether they warrant a new category all to themselves. The DoraBella Cipher is listed under "History of cryptography | Uncracked codes and ciphers" in Wikipedia (no such category exists in Wikimedia) but these graphics are specific to the Dorabella Cipher and relate to no other, to the best of my knowledge.

Yes, if it's worth uploading, it's worth categorizing. They should be categorized in a new Category:Dorabella Cipher or else a new Category:Uncracked codes and ciphers, either of which should be a subcategory of Category:History of cryptography. My own preference would be for the wider uncracked cat, in part because it corresponds precisely to a category in en Wikipedia. Jim.henderson (talk) 16:24, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
OK, thanks. That begs a follow-up question :) Since these items are highly specific - to the Dorabella Cipher alone (which has an entry in Wikipedia - I obviously got my embed wrong because it didn't work, so it appeared that the highest applicable category is Uncracked codes and ciphers) - should the category be something at a lower level?
The cipher itself is obviously part of the category of Uncracked codes and ciphers, but the unique symbols IMHO should be part of a new lower category - perhaps Cipher-Related Symbols - since there are at least two sets of symbols, only one of which relates directly to the cipher (i.e., the cusp-like symbols that are mapped to the letters of a 24 character alphabet).
The other set has only been seen on a page in an exercise book owned by Sir Edward Elgar, a page that also contains sample cipher to alphabet mappings and test encodings. The suspicion is that they are an attempt at creating a visual mnemonic - a way of indicating, somewhere in the proximity of a coded message, the steganographic manipulation of the arrangement of cipher symbols used to prepare the message.
In the case of the Dorabella Cipher, only one side of the ciphered note was ever published (the other side was simply described), but the note is known to have accompanied a separate letter from Elgar's wife. The note was for Dora Penny, the letter for her step-mother.
It and the original ciphered note have apparently been mislaid, but the possibility exists that Elgar may have doodled a symbol on his wife's letter or the envelope containing both items (something he was prone to do) and the doodle would have been unremarkable, except to anyone aware of the purpose and function of the visual mnemonic.
I just want to be sure that I create the categories correctly. I propose "History of cryptography | Uncracked codes and ciphers | Dorabella Cipher | Cipher-Related Symbols".

Uploading Fonts?

Related to my question about categories for the Dorabella Cipher-related graphics, I created a (free) rough-and-ready TTF font that provides the symbols for that same cipher. I had a scout round to see whether Wikimedia catered for font uploads but couldn't see anything.

Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?

Hello! I don't think any Wikimedia site allows TTF uploads. You can see COM:PS/FT for a list of allowable file types on Commons. There's also COM:FT. Hope those links help! Killiondude (talk) 17:48, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
Hi - thanks for responding. I had a strong feeling that there might be a gap in the Wikimedia Foundation's projects, but wasn't absolutely certain. It does look as though there is no repository for fonts; I'll contact the Foundation and see if there's any plan (or even support) for something akin to a Wikifoundry. Deleting a file

Can't see new version

A question that had no heading

Hello, I am a newbie in Wikipedia, I would like to upload my text and picture, my own creation (biography) I have chosen my license, but the explanation for uploading are only decipherable for hackers or professional editors. I have tried on many occasion, but to no avail.... Can I get somehow some help for uploading without having to conform to 15 pages of details of do and don't and getting nowhere. If you are trying to create a new article on Wikipedia, it will probably be deleted. Very few new users come to Wikipedia understanding all the complex rules for what is allowable there. You have to read a lot more than 15 pages to have any idea of what is going on with these projects. It is much better to learn by making small edits to already existing articles, and then see what other editors do to your edits. In the meantime, anyone can create a biography on Wikibios. For a biography to be acceptable on Wikipedia, it must be about a notable person, and you should not create an article about yourself. The various Wikimedia Foundation projects like the Wikipedias, and Commons, are free to use because they rely on the ability and willingness of users to teach themselves by reading our friendly manuals. This keeps the costs very low because everybody can follow the same instructions and thereby avoid wasting each other's time. People who do not like to read manuals often do not have a satisfying outcome from editing here. --Teratornis (talk) 03:16, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

Copyright double check

Hi Commons, I just wanted to confirm that the first image on [2] (soldier in coat on the right) is in the public domain. It was created c. 1901, so it is in the public domain in Canada, where I assume it was first published (article appeared in Canadian Medical Association Journal and taken from a Canadian historical place), and in the Philippines (where the image was first created), the image is also in the public domain. However, is the image in the public domain in the United States? I don't know when the image was first published, and the US doesn't use creation date, rather publication date. How to publish a wikimedia commons image in wikipedia

I have made an animation to illustrate inductive heating, uploaded that animation to wikimedia commonas, and can find no information whatsoever on how to have the image viewable on the page I am attempting to add the image to.

Depending on the article you are editing, there might be an infobox template which displays an image, and you might use that instead. Adding a category to an image, Second go-round.

Instructions provided have no functionality. They tell clearly what needs to be done, but nowhere is included instructions on what links to use to change an image from un-categorized to categorized.

Again, I can read. Please do not re-use the same pages to give me the same information. Spell out exactly and specifically what links are to be used, and what steps taken.

I am frustrated at understanding what needs to be done, but no user-friendly way of effecting this change. There is no link, no button, no instructions of any kind. I have read the letter (see below), followed every link and read every word. I have read the similar faqs in the archives, and the most they say is to "add the information and save the page"... add where? add how? what page? how do I get to said page? I have logged in, been to every page, NOTHING IS EDITABLE!!!

The bot asked you to edit the file description page and add a category following the instructions on how to add a category. You can add a category by adding the text [[Category:Foo]] to the image description page. To add this text to the image description page you have to edit it. So go to the image description page, File:Atomic large.gif, click on edit, add the category text to bottom of the page and klick on save. reusing images CC-BY-SA on my site

The latter. The attribution is required in the way the copyright holder specified it, if no specification was made you can attribute the author in a way to the best of your knowledge (...without implying that he supports your publication and so on, thats written in other parts of the full license texts). But: The cc-by-SA license, the SA, ShareAlike requires besides the attribution that you indicate the license. See Commons:Credit_line#CC-BY and CC-BY-SA licenses for suggested credit lines. Additional, you pointed to File:Lophophanes cristatus Luc Viatour 5.jpg, the "I" in "I, Luc Viatour" is the result of a template error, should be fixed, of course you are not asked nor suggested to attribute "I, Luc Viatour" ;) --Martin H. You can't. When you uploaded your images, you released them under a free license that is irrevocable. But why did you change your mind so quickly, anyway? You only uploaded those files yesterday. Powers (talk) 13:24, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
This topic was started as a request for rename, so only in case you thought a complete restard would be the easier sollution: No, accounts will not be deleted and uploads unlikely as LtPowers said. Editing the image's name

Dear Administrators,

I am asking for your advice. Last year I placed nine images for a singer Arnold Azrikan, and they are in use which is fine but I have noticed that four images out of nine don't have a proper title (it should have the name "Azrikan" before the role's name). I would like to remove these four images and upload them again with a new title for a better usage. I would be very grateful if you tell me how to do it. I remember that last year I tried to do the same with two images (Andrii and Vakula) and then I created a mess which resulted in a long written exchange between you and me, and I was sorry to take so much time from you. My first step was to find out where exactly on the discussion page I should place my request for renaming the file. While I could not find the answer to this question I was shocked to see on the description of the image Mazepa.jpg linked to the "usage on ru.wikipedia.org" showing Azrikan's photo from our family archives as a painting from the Stockholm's museum!!!! Wow, what a terrible thing to see. Now we all can see how important the renaming is. I am going to place our request for the renaming the files which don't have the name Azrikan upfront to avoid future mistakes but this particular mistake must be immediately corrected. It is not an unknown painting but the photo of an opera singer Arnold Azrikan from the National Opera and ballet theater of Ukraine, Kiev (late 1930's years). You have to place the rename request directly on the file description page. The usage in ru.wikipedia is on some talkpage, they once had some other image uploaded localy to ru.wp with the same name which was used in this talk - http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mazepa.jpg?uselang=en&action=history - which was deleted in the meantime. Thats nothing to correct on Commons but simply on ru.wp. --Martin H. (talk) 16:57, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

Book Cover

Yes, that file is uploaded locally to the english Wikipedia en:File:Do_Not_Open.jpg, not to Commons File:Do_Not_Open.jpg. On other projects fair use is handled different. --Martin H. (talk) 14:09, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

Another difficult commons transfer

Union City, NJ seal

I was given a copy of the city seal of Union City, New Jersey, and permission to use it in the UC article on Wikipedia, by City Hall. I scanned it, but I don't know what license to use in uploading it. Can you respond on my Wikipedia Talk Page? I don't spend as much time on the Commons. Thanks. Permission to use something on the English Wikipedia is insufficient for uploading to Commons. See COM:L#Acceptable licenses. If whoever gave you the seal will agree to release it under a free content license such as {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}}, get their permission in email and follow the procedure in COM:OTRS. If they will not license it freely, then you can upload the seal to the English Wikipedia under a fair use criterion. I do not know who owns the copyright to the image. It will either be the artist who created the image, or it is a Work for hire, in which case whoever paid the artist will own the copyright. Presumably someone at the city government can tell you. Most people are not familiar with copyright law, so you may have to ask some number of people in the city government to get a definitive answer. Beats me. I've never uploaded any fair use images. If nobody here knows, you could ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions since fair use is a factor on Wikipedia but not on Commons. The problem with that is twofold: First, I don't know if the person in question would choose a Free License over say, a Fair Use template when uploading it to Wikipedia directly, since Fair Use would allow everyone to use it, and I'm not sure they'd want that, given how circumspect they were in vetting my request.
Second, you need to understand that not everyone is a Wikipedian, and understands all the ins and outs of how Wikipedia works, its templates, rules, upload procedures, etc. I've tried getting people who I thought were extremely intelligent, knowledgeable and computer saavy to upload an image that they own to illustrate an article, because doing it myself resulted in it being deleted, and they found the entire email/upload process too arcane and intimidating to figure out. (Hell, look at me: I've been an editor for 5 years, an administrator for over two, and have uploaded hundreds of pics to the Commons, and I can't make heads or tails of this particular area! :-) ) This is why I came here. Okay, but this isn't a Wikipedia. What fair use options there are depends on which Wikipedia you're uploading to, and there's no reason to assume that we on Commons will be familiar with the fair use licensing of a foreign project.--Prosfilaes (talk) 19:20, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

That's not for you or I to say; it's entirely up to the copyright holder whether to release it under a free license. You can ask, but I wouldn't hold your breath. If you want to use it on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use, ask there, not here. Powers (talk) 20:18, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

Carefull, the 70 years term is not related in any way to the death of the subject but the death of the author. We need an authors name or live data or we need the first publication to determine whether the image was published anonymously or not. --Martin H. (talk) 21:30, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Immaculate Conception Academy of Manila (Logo)

I have found an image of our school's logo from Google Images Search and I want to upload it to Commons but I don't know if to what copyright it will be subjected beacause it only says below:

"The image below was found by Google Image Search and may be subject to copyright."

See Commons:Project scope/Precautionary principle - in general, assume a media file is not free content unless we can prove it is free. The great majority of files resulting from a Google Images search are not free and thus not suitable for Commons. Most of the world is either not yet aware of free content licensing, or rejects the idea. However, some logos are too simple to be copyrightable; see COM:CB#Trademarks. For non-free content you can try to follow the procedure in COM:OTRS. If you want more specific advice, give us a link to the image you found. --Teratornis (talk) 18:55, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

Category for screenshots and drawings used in WIKIs of "French Wiktionary HELP"

When I uploaded the images, referenced on my page of discussion (and it will follow even more) I was aware of the problem, not having to categorized them. BUT I COULD NOT FIND a fitting Category or Category brach.
May I ask you to help me, for you it's surely a simple thing. And if I once get ahead ... (My problem is getting into the categories and their branches, understandig the struchture. This seems to me not to be simply and clearly explainded.) NoX (talk) 15:24, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

Deletion backlog

Over at en.wikipedia, a featured article review is waiting for a resolution to these two deletion requests, which were filed on January 12. I see from this page that the deletion backlog goes much further back than this, but if it's not too much trouble, could someone please close these discussions so that the featured article review can proceed? Image file replacement

The existing file Yaw_Axis.svg of aircraft rotation conventions showed roll axis rotations in the wrong direction (see http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/K-12/airplane/rotations.html for example). I have prepared a corrected version and uploaded it to Yaw_Axis_Corrected.svg (I couldn't replace the old file because my account is too new). Please move it to replace the previous file. Thanks! Look at random images and see, how images are sorted to categories (with the text [[Category:...]] on the file description), add an appropriate category to the file, create the category page and add categories to the category page to make it a subcategory, remove the higher level catetgories from the image to prevent COM:OVERCAT. uploading jpeg image

File:Billboard_Luyendyk.jpg.

I can't seem to get the color to show up after upload. The thumbnails appear black and white. The image is a color scan of a color slide. The scan was a TIFF and I changed from TIFF to jpeg in Photoshop to upload to WCommons. Tried checking "Use embedded profile" when saving and that did not help. Ideas?

No source license

One of my images, File:Kronshtadt1.jpg, has gotten tagged for no source data. However, I clearly specified that it was a US Naval Historical Center photograph, with the catalog number, and that it was a captured Luftwaffe reconnaissance photograph. You say the image was created by the Luftwaffe? So the license tag "created by an employee of the U.S. Navy" can hardly applie. If it was created in 1941 by the, I suppose german, Luftwaffe it cant be public domain in the country of origin (70 years pma). The image might be labled as public domain by the U.S. government, maybe seized enemy property or whatever, but if it is created by german forces it is not in the public domain. --Martin H. But now I looked at File:Poggiapipe indiano.jpg: This is not a reproduction of 2D artwork. This is a reproduction of a reproduction of 3D artwork, the person who initially created the photograph of this artwork gains copyright for his work, if this photo is from 1964 it is likely not public domain. The license template is clearly wrong. Lets ignore all scanning and photocopy, concentrate on the only creative work, the work of making the photograph: Who is the photographer? Flickr images with permission

I have had several users from Flickr give permission for their images to be used on Commons under the CC-BY-SA license, although on Flickr the images are All rights reserved. You can use http://toolserver.org/~magnus/catscan_rewrite.php, enter both categories in the categories field (Sydney Harbour Bridge in the first line, line break, Sydney Opera House in the second line). The result of this category interesection comes with image size, I found nothing really suitable. The result of course depends on the quality of categorization, so its better to browse both categories, Category:Sydney Opera House and Category:Sydney Harbour Bridge manually. If you find one image in one category that also shows the other subject but is not categorized you may add the category to help improving the categorization ;) --Martin H. I tried to upload an image called "Decoration.jpg". The page said, "Warning... has been deleted ... overwrite... the same file name..." I can't remember the exact wording. I clicked a button with the cancel function. Has that image with the same name been deleted? Please undo it. I did _not_ intend to overwrite this image with the same name. That file name is empty, and your image uploads list does not seem to include such a file name. So I think you're good. Just hit cancel as you did or click back on your browser to return to the upload form. ZooFari 03:45, 14 February 2010 (UTC)

Class Photo

I think you mean there is no copyright notice on it. In this case it's most likely {{PD-US-no notice}}. However, take a look at Commons:Project scope - we only accept files that serve a legitimate educational purpose, so it'd be helpful if you could think about what it would help illustrate. California's copyright policy on their websites is a vague "maybe be copyrighted". licensing question

I have a question regarding licensing. I'd like to ask the United States Naval Institute to donate digital media of the USMC Art collection, but I'm not sure if thier Online Photo Licensing policies are compatable with Commons's needs. Specifically, Commons:Licensing states that "Republication and distribution must be allowed. Publication of derivative work must be allowed. Commercial use of the work must be allowed. The license must be perpetual (non-expiring) and non-revocable." I also note that use cannot be restricted by to Wikimedia only or Noncommercial/Educational use only... only a handful of these images are PD, the rest have a copyright held by the USNI. Are there any other considerations I should take before making this request? Is there some sort of specific license that may be the best for both our needs and the USNI's? Read COM:CB#Trademarks (if the logo is very simple, it cannot be copyrighted) and look at Category:Logos for an example similar to yours. If the logo is your own work, and not a Work for hire, then you own the copyright (if it is complex enough to be copyrightable) and you can license it as you like, e.g. {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}}. If the client paid you to create the logo for the client, then the copyright might be owned by the client depending on the copyright laws in your jurisdiction, and whether you had arranged to retain the copyright yourself. I am not a lawyer, but I suppose the safest method would be for both you and your client to give permission in writing and follow the procedure in COM:OTRS. Adding categories to a previously uploaded image

It is being requested that I add a category to File:Gps error diagram 2.svg. In accordance with instructions as I interpret them, I clicked on "edit" at the top of the page, http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gps_error_diagram_2.svg. I then added "Category:Engineering diagrams" enclosed in double brackets to the bottom of the page or at least the last thing I was permitted to edit. I the clicked "Show preview" and then "Save page". But upon looking at the page it still says "This media file is uncategorized". What is the reason that my entry of Category:Engineering diagrams is not recognized?

Actually, your category is being recognized, as you can see at the bottom of the description page. However, you didn't delete the notice that says {{Uncategorized|year=2010|month=February|day=17}}Jim.henderson (talk) 23:16, 18 February 2010 (UTC)

Help me!

Because the file which プレイズマン uploaded, is reversed printing, I uploaded a new file which I reversed to normal. Probably because I did not clear cash when I reviewed it, the reversed printing was displayed again. Then I uploaded it again. May be, because of the same reason, the reversed printing was displayed again. However, the 2nd revision's thumbnails was displayed definitely, so I did a revert, but do not succeed. Then I tried a revert twice, but failed. I am sorry not to be able to return it to normal 2nd revision.

Maybe Javascript became disabled in your browser? That might happen if you accidentally bump the right hot key combination. I do weird things to my browser when I type in the dark sometimes. Making sure I understand licensing right

New user with existing accounts on the German and English Wikipedia.

I want to use this image originally published on Flickr under a CC-BY license. [6] If I understand it right, I can use the photo on Commons without asking the photographer for permission as long as I name the photographer in the file description, is that right?

If yes, what license do I have to, or am I allowed to, publish the photo under here on Commons? Also, I seem to be unable to find the photographer's real name in his Flickr profile. You can upload images licensed CC-BY or CC-BY-SA from Flickr, when uploading always put same license as on Flickr page. Flickr user name you can find at his profile page [7]. Should be fine, as long as:
  • The statement referred specifically to the works in question and clearly named the license.
  • You can link to the Twitter and that link either will work indefinitely, or can be archived by a mirror service.

Cropped version: other license?

The content from the original image is licensed under the same license as the original image, so the primary license tag you would just copy from the old image description page. Since it's CC-BY, not CC-BY-SA, if you make substantial modifications to the image, you can release them under any license you like - the most common thing is to use the template {{PD-retouched-user|YourUsername}} to release all rights to your modifications. However, mere cropping is generally considered ineligible for copyright, so you don't have to worry about it unless you want to be thorough. Dcoetzee (talk) 02:45, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

out-dated images

I see a Category:Maps showing history. You could look at that category and related categories, that might lead you to some maps that have templates to indicate their outdated status, if such exist. Backlog?

This file Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Weilandsuit2008.jpg still exists, and I was wondering why. I saw a large backlog, but the date I requested the deletion (February 7) doesn't show up on the backlog. Was it somehow overlooked? Or is the backlog so large that this will take time to get to? – Keraunoscopia (talk) 19:28, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

Currently around 5000 images awaits one or another decision. Oldest unclosed deletion request is from early June 2009, so it may take some time --Justass (talk) 19:36, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

Harassment

Hi, two anonymous users have written some defamatory remarks on my talk page, without signs: [9] [10]. And there is another one at: other user's page. Could anybody delete these? What do you mean by "delete these"? Are you asking for oversight? You can delete anything you like from your user talk page, but only a small number of privileged users can delete edits from a page history. Also, the link you gave shows a question, not a claim. good day...i am Ahmad DAoud from Jordan . i have uncle (soleeman)whom he left Jordan long time ego,, i heared that he is in Edrine and he used to have Gas Station & he is married & have nice family .
