Category naming: very long personal names

What is the current take on naming categories for people with names like Auguste-Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Cadolle (1782-1849) ? The few English sources I have usually reduce it to Auguste-Antoine Cadolle or Auguste Cadolle, but since the person is barely known outside of Russia there seems to be no definitive shortcut. Start by reading Wikipedia:Naming conventions (people). Then look for articles and categories about this person on the various language Wikipedias, and (possibly) follow their style. You could also look for a relevant WikiProject where you might find other users who specialize in the topic involving the person in question, and ask for suggestions on the WikiProject's talk page. This is the basic problem-solving procedure on Commons and the Wikipedias:

• What are the documented rules?
• What have other users done for the current case, or closely related cases?

None of these seemed to work, that's why I am here. I am for the time being "the user who specialize", and the search for French sources yields conflicting answers (in Russian and contemporary British sources he is known by surname alone). The only commonly used English-language name for the person is M. Cadolle, unacceptable since there are another Cadollles on the record. NVO (talk) 13:14, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

If you are the sole authority then you get to set the precedent. I'd suggest "Auguste-Antoine Cadolle" because it is short enough to be convenient but long enough to (probably) be unambiguous. In the category description (the user-editable text that appears at the top of a category page) you can list the person's full name and all the variants you know about in various languages. Then they will show up in a search on Commons. If someone doesn't like your choice of category name in the future, they can rename the category. We don't get locked in if you make a "bad" choice, although renaming categories is not the easiest task. --Teratornis (talk) 00:27, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Copyright status of pic on Panamanian Government Website

Hi all. I would like to use an image of a past president of Panama, Daniel Chanis. There is a pic on the Panamanian government's website, very small, very low quality. If it's possible, what rationale could be used:

1. The same rationale that one would use for the US federal government?
2. Such a small, low quality image, and no other image exists?

Any help would be appreciated. This is the page the image exists on.

Both no. 1) The US copyright law exempts works created by U.S. federal government employees from copyright (at least in the U.S.), the copyright law of Panama not have such a broad exemption as far as I see from a quick view (only the usual, text of laws, regulations, etc. - see Art. 9). And 2) even if the image is of low quality or blurry: it is maybe protected by copyright, a rational like "no other image exists" is fair use and fair use is not accepted on Commons. You may check other Commons:Free media resources for images or look out for photographs or paintings created by photographers or painters who 1) published their work in Panama and 2) died >50 years ago (Art. 42) I dont know if this is ok with URAA and US copyright. --Martin H. U.S. Government archives, how to upload and credit documents and images from ...

help! how do i upload stuff i got during a research visit at the "Archives of the Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site of the National Park Service"? they freely provide access to photos, plans and plant lists, asking only that reproductions be credited "Courtesy of Archives..." for example, how do i credit my upload of a scan i made "Oldfields_Border_plantings,_Olmsted_job-6883,_sheet_88,_scanned_11_2007_orig_sz_29x24inch.jpg"? the Park Service has not been able to digitize these materials yet, and i'd like to link the examples i have to the wiki articles on "Olmsted Brothers" and "Oldfields." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jeffvonb (talk • contribs) 06:13, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

There is a {{PD-USGov-NPS}} template, but that only applies to works by National Park Service employees in the course of their official duties. However, the template illustrates how to document the reuse provisions for a class of content. Merely claiming what the reuse provision are ("they freely provide access...") is not good enough for Commons; we need a verifiable citation of an official statement of that policy, preferably with a URL. I don't see anything useful on this FAQ page. I'm not sure what to make of this sentence:

• While great strides have been made to gain intellectual control of the historic collections involved, more work is needed before embarking on a digitization effort.

Using an image with permission that has a copyright notice

I have asked the original uploader of this picture on Flickr to use it on Commons. He replied on the comments and gave permission. In addition he relicensed the picture under CC-BY. The problem is, the picture itself has a copyright notice on it. May I upload it anyway, since I have permission to do so, or should I or the uploader remove the notice?—Totie (talk) 11:53, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

You was asked to sent a written permission to COM:OTRS, not to post it on the help desk. Also a permission "FOR THE WIKI NEEDS" is not enough, permission must be given voluntarily by the copyright holder that everyone can reuse the images everywhere, for every purpose including commercial purposes and modification under an irrevocable free license. Okey, there it goes: I have mailed twice to the following: [permissions-commons@wikimedia.org] (no reply yet) - where I have asserted that I have had the full rights to use those two files on Wikipedia. I'll repeat it: I HAVE mailed it there. Now, one of the 2 files has been deleted, the other one is "questionned". Why? Now to the actual Licensing-matter: I do not (not yet) possess knowledge sufficing to distinguish one from another different codes such as those indicated in the list from where I should tick my appropriate license. I DO KNOW FOR SURE that I'm ENTIRELY AUTHORIZED to give Wikipedia the rights to use those images within the proj, and all I need thus is that you help me correctly license-tag them. Would you or anyone please read my support page where I have cited all informal & formal permissions I could, and help us out of it without risking the files? There again: HOW can I bring over to wiki the consent I have from the owner of the pictures? And should my own word not suffice?

Please help me tag back [File:951-core.jpg] and [File:Plastico.jpg] and restore them, and specify what I should do to maintain them.

Well, my hebrew is not that good and I must rely on automatic translations that produce only riberish for hebrew ;) As far as I understand: You have wrote a request to the copyright holder, they answer with the name of the photographer and one sentence saying you can reuse the image in an article. You sent an email to Wikimedia saying the copyright holder licensed the images under {{Cc-by-all}}.

1) I dont see the connection of your email with the original permission. "You can use the image in article xy" is not a permission to a free license.

2) The copyright holder must voluntarily release the image under a free license HE specified in his words, nothing else. He must aknowledge the terms of the license and the scope of the licensing (=everyone can reuse the image, not only Wikipedia but everyone).

At least your question on "how to?" was answered above, Commons:OTRS. You said you already forwarded your written permission, so it will be checked by an OTRS volunteer and accepted or rejected, if deleted in the meantime images will be restored. --Martin H. (talk) 21:21, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

I see that now it takes only to wait and see the permission-guys's decision accept-or-reject as you said, since the guy you call *the copyright holder* is no other than the music group leader himself (- and as such is the one in both the photograph and cd-scan), and is the sole authority to determine what may be done with his lable and products, the fact that he personally and consciously has given me the permission to use the two files on Wiki could, or so I was hoping, be enough for us - as you guys trust me;-) - or so should it be, and in no way will that person intervene in our wiki-internal-mess here just to finally enable that article bare his pic – this is OUR very aim that the article be nice and graphically well-rendered etc. - His duty is to make music.

Wrong name

hi, some time ago I uploaded a photograph on Wikimedia Commons, but accidently gave the picture a wrong title.. The picture shows the Philip II Arena in Skopje being under construction, but the title I gave the pic is "Petrovec".. a photograph of a Macedonian village near Skopje which I thought I was uploading (I did later). So my question is : Can someone change the title of the pic http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Petrovec.JPG to something like PhilipIIArena under construction.JPG ?? Blender-Logo

I want to replace this logo currently used in most Blender Articles: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Blender.svg with the official one.

Because I think this old logo file is tagged with the wrong license (the Blender Logo is not GPL), is not really the Blender Logo but some icon for it and probably lacks some Trademark information/warning, I wanted to ask you what would be the correct form to upload this logo to wikimedia commons (I simply want to do it correct this time).

The logo guidelines for the Blender-Logo can be found here: http://www.blender.org/blenderorg/blender-foundation/logo/ . I already converted the .eps to a .svg, so the file is not a problem. But the license is.

I already talked to the chairman of Blender Foundation, Ton Roosendaal, but he wasn't sure either about correct licensing and tagging and about the correct author-description. Nevertheless, I think he will help bringing it to commons if he has to give any permission or something like that.

The logo page clearly states the logo is copyrighted and not free content. Thus it is unacceptable for Commons. See COM:L#Acceptable licenses. Note especially the restrictions on commercial use of the Blender logo. Commons can accept no commercial restrictions on media uploaded here. If Ton Roosendaal will release some version of the logo under a free license, you could follow the procedure in COM:OTRS. Otherwise your only alternative is to upload the logo to one or more of the Wikipedias and claim fair use, which you cannot do on Commons. --Teratornis (talk) 01:12, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

Then I'll probably contact Ton again, but it looks like it is not possible to find a license suiting the commercial interest of the Blender Foundation and the requirements on commons. Who owns Copyright?

I have a photo and it's being challenged, by people who for their own reasons are harassing me to get me to quit editing on Wikipedia. My question is simply this: Suppose you and your spouse are on vacation and you ask a total stranger to take your photo with YOUR camera. Is my nemesis right that this photo cannot be used without locating that stranger and getting HIM to give permission? This seems overly pedantic. In my case it was a photo taken by my wife on MY camera, at my request with a famous person (with his permission of course). Are these illegal photos for use on Wiki, based on this guys interpretation of your rules?Drsjpdc (talk) 22:07, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

A difficult question. Commons talk:Licensing/Archive 20#A stranger takes a photo of me with my own camera, who owns the copyright? supports the view, that you can not upload the image here. The photographer is the copyright holder and a copyright transfer (speaking in U.S. law as you are from the U.S. as I can guess from your timezone) is only possible in written form. In question the most precautionary view will "win" on Commons. A very odd deletion discussion on this is Commons:Deletion requests/File:Wm2007 DrorK and Bastique (with troll).jpg, finaly someone came out as the photographer. The same problem was also addressed e.g. in de.wp, the answer there was, that it depends on whether taking the photograph is creative enough for copyright or not depending on the strangers photographic skills. That's however impossible to determine, so in question: No upload. In case the photographer is a family member it might be easy to solve the problem, I don't think anyone will protest if you upload a photograph taken by your wife with the appropriate author information (your username +the information "family member" or "wife"). Also Commons is full of photographs showing the "author" with a famous person, this shows that the pedantism is correct but impossible to enforce. --Martin H. (talk) 00:14, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

There is a Work for hire article on the English Wikipedia. It may shed some light. Or not. In the case of a photograph taken by the original poster's wife, he could follow the COM:OTRS procedure to document her permission. Look on Special:MergeAccount to see all the Wikimedia Foundation wikis you have automatically logged into. If you unified your account, you will log in automatically to a Wikimedia Foundation wiki merely by browsing to it while logged into any other WMF wiki. This causes some confusion for example when you log into another language Wikipedia and it is one that sends an automatic welcome e-mail in its site language. Move/rename an image

I recently uploaded an image from my phone, and somehow I uploaded it to [[File:Cafeteria.jpg]] instead of File:Hospital cafeteria.jpg. I don't see a "move" tab, so I'm guessing that's restricted to admins here unlike Wikipedia. search engine

Why is the search window not working? Something as simple as "beans" or "wagon" should get at least some response. The Wikimedia technical blog sometimes explains server outages. It is unreasonable to assume anything about a system built by strangers. Different people think in different ways, and have different priorities. There is also no reason to expect a successful fundraiser would yield any arbitrary feature, unless it had been promised. A million people could look at Wikipedia or Commons and each person could have a different idea about where the money should go. In reality, only the people in charge of spending the money will determine how it gets spent. For perspective, note that Bill Gates probably loses more money under his sofa cushions than the Wikimedia Foundation will ever see, and yet despite having orders of magnitude more money behind them, Microsoft products do not satisfy everyone either. Question re licensing of screeshots to be uploaded to Commons

I am the owner of Formula Calculator Pty Ltd, which in turn owns the Formula Calculator Products described at www.FormulaCalculator.com.

The Terms and Conditions at this site specifically allow free use of screenshots of the FC Products in various types of document, but, because it is commercial software, such screenshots don't seem to come under any of the Free License categories, at least as I understand them.

Does this mean that I can't upload screenshots to Commons, even though I personally, as the author of the FC Products, and the company, as the copyright owner, are prepared to place them in the public domain?

If You as a copyright holder agree to release some screenshots of your work under any acceptable free license then it's absolutely OK to upload them. But please tag all images with {{OTRS-pending}} tag, then copy email template, fill necessary fields and send permission to the permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, best of all from official company email address. I think you (the original poster) would be better off licensing your material with {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}} rather than placing it into the public domain, because then you would retain attribution rights, and prevent anyone else from depriving others of freedom to reuse any derivative works based on your work. Hinweistafel abfotografiert - wer hat jetzt das recht am Bild ?

Hallo, ich hoffe hier ist jemand dabei der mir helfen kann....?
Ich habe eine Hinweistafel fotografiert auf dem ein Gebäude zu sehen ist, dass würde ich gerne hochladen weiss aber nicht ob ich das darf ? Reicht es aus wenn ich dazu schreibe wer die hinweistafel gespendet hat oder sollte ich es bessder nicht hochladen ?

Das kommt darauf an, in welchem Land du das Foto gemacht hast und ob diese Tafel permanent und an einem öffentlich zugänglichem Ort installiert war. Die Frage ist, ob die Tafel unter die sogenannte Panoramafreiheit fällt. Diese gibt es nur in einigen Ländern (z.B. Deutschland). Also die Friesenhaus Entscheidung kenne ich schon lange. Dann eben anders erklärt. In Duisburg stehen die reste eines Schlosses, der Weg dorthin ist öffentlich und die Hinweistafel ist ebenfalls öffentlich zugänglich. Würde es also reichen wenn ich folgendes schreibe:

"Historischer Wanderweg im Angerland" Hinweistafel gestifftet vom Huckinger Bürgerverein sowie der Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann

Und welche Lizenz muss ich dann auswählen? Die Lizenz gilt für das Foto, nicht für das Objekt. Du als Fotograf kannst dir also irgendeine der auf commons zugelassenen aussuchen. Am flexibelsten ist die im Uploadformular angebotene Doppellizensierung. Oder du nimmst PD/Gemeinfrei, wenn du auf Namensnennung (des Fotografen) usw. verzichten willst. Ansonsten fällt das Foto der beschriebenen Tafel unter die Panoramafreiheit, kann also hier hochgeladen werden. Bei dem abfotografierten Bild ist das schon schwieriger. Wenn eindeutig erkennbar ist, daß es älter als 130 Jahre ist, kann man davon ausgehen, daß der Maler lange genug tot ist und die Urheberrechte erloschen sind. Also hochladen, wenn es für die Wikipedia irgendwie zu gebrauchen ist. Ist das Alter nicht eindeutig zu ermitteln, oder ist es eindeutig jünger als 100 Jahre, dann hast du leider ein Problem: Es könnten noch Urheberechte drauf sein - ohne Genehmigung des Malers oder dessen Rechtsnachfolger/Erben kein Hochladen erlaubt. -- smial (talk) 01:27, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Problem with image reload

this image has a tag on it... if you think the issue has been resolved just remove the tag. I would like to point out, however, that this image is not in the public domain. Interesting is, how the gifting took place: in general, if you are not the author of that file, you have to bring a written permission (email, etc). Ruth Draper

Hello, I'm wondering if you can help with another photo problem. The 1903 picture posted on the page for Ruth Draper, the American monologue artist, is NOT a photo of Draper. It may be someone else with the same name, but it is not Ruth Draper, the actress known for her one-person theater sketches. I tried to delete the photo, but no luck. Your question is easier to understand if you link to the page and photo you have in mind. There is a Ruth Draper article on the English Wikipedia; you seem to be contesting the description on the photo File:Ruth Draper 1903.jpg. The Library of Congress entry does not specify which Ruth Draper the photo depicts. You could be right, the photo could depict a Ruth Draper other than the subject of the Wikipedia article, but just making an unsourced assertion is not helpful here. Ideally you should provide sources to identify the person in the photo, and show she is different from the Ruth Draper in the Wikipedia article. See WP:V. Problem with rotating Image

The bot Rotatebot, rotated unnecessarily the image File:Farol do Castelo de Santiago-02.JPG, and I reverted it, but now is a little overwhelmed in the category page (thum image), and in pt.wikipedia - someone help?--JotaCartas (talk) 06:52, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

I dont know how exactly this works, but the EXIF orientation tag was identified with the upload, a tag was placed on the image and the bot executed the rotation and not recognized that you already did it (I think there is some room for improvememnt, the bot may have recognized your reupload). However, I dint understand your request, for me the image is showing up correctly in the category and article. Please refresh your browsercache if this was the problem. --Martin H. Help:Public domain#Copyright terms by country gives life of author plus 70 years for the copyright term in Germany. Since 1943 was about 67 years ago, the film is probably not out of copyright yet. COM:SCREENSHOT says screen captures are derivative works of the program or film from which they come, and thus fall under the same copyright as the source. If you can determine who owns the copyright to this film, you could ask them to release some screen captures under a free license and follow the procedure in COM:OTRS. First Upload: Some Question

Hello, this is my first attempt to upload, here. I have a picture of State Senator Gretchen Whitmer that I'd like to add to her Wikipedia page:

The photo on this page clearly reads "Photo available for media use", meaning its free to use, here, but when I go the the upload page, I have no idea of what option to choose on the "Where is the work from?" list. It's not my work, or a flickr file, or a derivative Commons work, etc..., so I click on the "Somewhere else" option to take me to the upload page. From there, I have no idea what I'd add in the "author" field. Can someone tell me what I'd type into each of the required fields? Titel

I could not see how to edit the title of a file so I uploaded it again with the correct title. I do not see how to delete the file with the wrong title.

Hi Liebgard, you can not rename a file so you may upload it again under the correct name (what you did, so ok), or you can ask for rename with {{rename|newname.ext|reason=Your reason (e.g. typo, wrong identification, nameing shema)}} with .ext beeing the file extension like .jpg or .JPG. See Commons:File renaming.

Now you have uploaded the duplicate and you want to delete the old version. See Commons:Deletion guidelines, the correct tag is {{duplicate|newname.ext}}. • Ok, this is fixed. You can force the server to purge the local cache by adding the "&action=purge" tag to the end of the page. After that, you need to force a reload of your local cache. Well, there is a problem. For instance, when you uploaded File:LRprezidentura.jpg on June 20, 2007, you just said "author=kastsmig" and GFDL as the license. However, this image also exists at Panoramio, where it is marked "all rights reserved". So, if you just took that image from panoramio and uploaded it here: we won't restore this image. If youare "Kastsmig", you could simply change the license at Panoramio to CC-BY or CC-BY-SA; then we could restore the image here and adapt the license accordingly. But then I don't understand why you say it was a problem that you didn't keep the files on your computer: just get them again from Panoramio.

The same problem also exists with File:KrikstenuMokykla.jpg, which also exists at [3]. I didn't look at your other uploads.

If you want these files restored (or re-upload them), you should really change the license at Panoramio to CC-BY or CC-BY-SA. Lupo 08:20, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

Links in category description text

Is there a general consensus on where links should point to? That is, should they mostly try to point to categories here in Wikimedia Commons, or to articles in Wikipedia? -- DMS (talk) 15:29, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Give examples of what you mean. There are almost infinitely many possibilities for the linked text. The only general rule that could make sense would be to choose the link destination that best describes the linked text. The category page Category:First Great Western Link is a good example. FGWL was a train operating company, and the text on that page summarises the area it operated in as follows: "...local and regional services from London Paddington to West London, the Thames Valley, Oxford, Hereford, Worcester, Newbury and Basingstoke." What I'm trying to get a steer on, is whether people would expect links like these location names to be links to elsewhere in Commons where they'd find images, or links to the pages about these places in Wikipedia, where they'd find information. I came across this page and noticed that these place names were all red links (they just have double square brackets around each place name, like you'd do in Wikipedia), and was about to set them to point to relevant pages here in Commons, but then thought I'd best check first, in case there's a consensus on this. -- DMS (talk) 22:43, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

The red links to pages on Commons would (eventually) point to gallery pages on Commons, if someone makes them. (Instead of articles on Commons, we have gallery pages in the main namespace.) Each gallery page could have interlanguage links that would lead readers to the Wikipedia articles in various languages about the respective locations. I doubt there is a consensus on the best way to do this, because Commons is less-developed than the English Wikipedia - we don't have the same kind of intricate Manual of Style guidelines here. Since it is difficult to predict whether a random visitor would want to find images or information about a topic, one solution would probably not be ideal for everyone. However, linking to Wikipedia articles is not necessarily a dead end for images, because they can link back to Commons galleries or categories via Template:Commons or Template:Commons category. When I'm organizing categories or galleries on Commons, I add interlanguage links to them if suitable Wikipedia articles exist, and then add the templates to the Wikipedia articles to link back to Commons, if they weren't already there. With these linking methods we can insure that whether you linked to a page on Commons or on a Wikipedia, a reader could eventually get to the corresponding page on the other wiki. Another possibility is to create a template that creates a double-headed link to both a page on Commons and on one of the Wikipedias. --Teratornis (talk) 00:10, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Thank you Martin. Regarding the date for the image, I am quite sure it must be before the end of 1983, more than 25 years ago. Because it has been publicly known now that this person has left the position of the nuc sub designer for civil nuc plant before that time. The image was published at this website appeared dated Jan 16, 2007; while one other website (http://www.zgge.com/newsinfo.asp?SmallSortID=42&newID=704) I just newly found publishing the same image did not clearly date it. One more website (http://www.csfqw.com/peoplename/ShowAddArticle.aspx?artid=25850) having the same image dated it Sep 23, 2009. Regretably not. The copyright expiration term, according to s:Copyright Law of the People's Republic of China (2001), Article 21, for photographic works is 50 years after the first publication of the photo or, if unpublished 50 years, 50 years after creation. Sorry for intrude muself, but i had similar problemns, and the solution is not to purge the browser cache. The problem is the cache of the 'thums images' of commons or wikipedia. I cleaned the original image in commons, supressing the watermark (File:Chapora-fort.jpg). In en wikipedia, (en:Chapora Fort) is still showing the watermark. In pt.wikipedia i changed the pixels from 300px to 299px and the image is clean (pt:Forte de Chaporá), but if I restore the 300px, the thum is still showing the watermark. In commons, the 'big image' is clean, but the two thumbs at the end of the page still show the watermark. I think that it's needed a purge to commons cache. (obs: the change was made more than 24 hours ago, it was/is written in white over the blue sky "GoaHolidayHomes.com"). (sorry about my poor english)--JotaCartas (talk) 22:34, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Just telling us you are having problems is too vague to admit an answer, because we can't tell whether you are trying to upload photos, use photos that are already here, or what. Reversion

I just tried to revert File:Earth precession.svg to the orginal version 22:01, 4 May 2008 because its thumbnail shows the correct CW precession as I explained at File talk:Earth precession.svg. However, there was no change in the image displayed. Does clicking revert next to a specific version of an image actually revert to that image as implied by the message "You are about to revert the file Earth precession.svg to the version as of 22:01, 4 May 2008."? Or should I have clicked revert next to the wrong image?

Hello, I found this map [4] on Wiki Commons and it seems to imply by the coloring that the West Bank and Golan Heights are part of Israel. I want to take it down, but I don't want to mess up any pages and don't know where to find a replacement... Some one help!!!

May I upload a picture of my own artwork?

I'd like to contribute a photograph of an artwork for the article about paper quilling (the photo). I'm the author of both the artwork and the photo. If you are willing to release your artwork under a free license (meaning anyone can modify the image and use it commercially for anything they want), then yes, you may upload the photo. Powers (talk) 14:37, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

PD-Philippines -> PD-US-1996

I am encountering what I believe to be an absurd situation where some very old photos from the Philippines which are clearly in the public domain in the Philippines as stated in {{PD-Philippines}} are being prevented from being used on Wikipedia as public domain photos because of U.S. restrictions. Looking at the problem a bit more closely I notice that {{PD-US-1996}} may provide the answer to a great many of the situations.

According to Philippine law, all copyright on works expires 50 years after creation—a very broadly applicable and clear-cut standard.

{{PD-US-1996}} lists 3 criteria:

• it was first published outside the United States and
• US copyright formalities were not complied with and
• it was in the public domain in its home country on January 1, 1996.

The third criterion on that list can probably be easily met by a great number of photos. The flies in the ointment are the first two points.

For the first item:

• What is a published work? If I saw a photo in a Philippine museum or hanging at the entrance of a publicly accessible company office HQ is that considered published? Is my seeing it considered acceptable or do I need some published or printed source to confirm what I say?
• If a work is unpublished it's still public domain in the Philippines 50 years after creation. Is an unpublished public domain photo in the Philippines covered by {{PD-US-1996}}?
• How can one be certain it wasn't published in the United States first?

For the second item:

• How does one determine United States copyright formalities weren't complied with?

New Licensing Template

Hi. Recently I had obtained permission through OTRS for the files listed at Category:Drowned World Tour from Mad-eyes.net. however, actually the website has agreed to release all their images for commons under proper CC-BY-SA-3 license and attribution. My question is instead of continuously sending mails to OTRS whenever uploading an image can we create a separate template asserting the single OTRS ticket for permission as is done for eg in this template: {{Cc-by-3.0-IndiaFM}}? Where is the record of the website agreeing to license all their images under {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}}? Sites that do this generally put a page on their site that explains their licensing terms. You could make a license template that links to that page. I see an FAQ page on that site, but it says nothing about licensing terms for the site content. If your program can only run on a Microsoft operating system, you could try contacting Microsoft to ask whether your screenshot constitutes a derivative work that violates their copyright. Select a filename without the apostroph, they were allowed one time in filenames, but now they are forbidden. You can also request renaming of the file on en.wp to a filename without apostrophe before moving it to Commons. --Martin H. (talk) 20:30, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Dont know, my information based on personal expirience, I - and other user too - was once unable to reupload images with ' in filename because of some restriction. However, I tested it with File:Test's.svg and it works, also I already transfered the image requested above to Commons File:Customers at Charlottesville Union Station from inside Amtrak's Cardinal.jpg. So false alarm. I dont know why the user was unable to upload the file containing an ', hopefully I was not only able to do so because of Admin privileges. --Martin H. How to add a subcategory

I am a semi-newbie. I want to create a subcategory called Downtown San Jose, California within the category Neighborhoods of San Jose, California but I don't know how to do this. I checked the Help pages and could not find this info. Can someone help?

Take a look at other subcategories of Category:Neighborhoods of San Jose, California, then go to the page you want to create, Category:Downtown San Jose, California and create it following the examples of the other subcategories. Its quite simple, you only have to edit the new page and add [[Category:Neighborhoods of San Jose, California]] to it and save the page. That must be a temporary problem. A next step is to fill the category with more images if you want, see the search. For this purpose you may test the gadget HotCat, you can activate it in your preferences and it allows you to speedy edit the categories without changing into the edit modus every time. --Martin H. Hi. I am new to wikipedia and commons and in error uploaded an organisation "non-free logo" to commmons instead of direct to wikipedia. Banner Adverts from charities

What sort of copyright best describes this sort of charitable banner advert? Example from Save the Children - there is a copyright sign at the bottom of the page but they are clearly encouraging people to use it. Is it in the PD or does it come under "Fair use" or does some other rule apply to it? --Payo (talk) 15:58, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

They encourage and allow to use it in a special context, the files are not free for every kind of reuse (commercial reuse, modification, perpetual permission) and not licensed under a free license. The 88x31 version or any version without the backround image is ineligible for copyright ({{Pd-textlogo}}, see Commons:Licensing#Simple design. Everything with the background photo or this b&w pixel cloud (dont know what it shows) is not free and not applicable on Wikimedia projects outside fair use. --Martin H. You can upload the image under a different filename using the "derivative work from Commons" option in Commons:Upload, or, if it is an undisputed improvement as you say, you can upload it directly over the old file. How are outdated images removed to leave only current version?

Is WP interested in removing old versions of images that have been updated? I have in mind removal of all but the current version of File:Roll Pitch Yaw.JPG. Brews ohare (talk) 15:54, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Question Regarding Images I Uploaded

Hello,

I hope this is the right place for this questions. I recently uploaded three files onto the Commons. They were: Jim_McCormick_at_North_Pole_April_18,_1995.jpg‎ Jim_McCorimick_at_AT&T_Park_2000.jpg‎ James_Maxwell_McCormick.jpg‎

Irritatingly, my email chose that moment to go down and it took me awhile to be able to forward the permissions to permissions_commons@ wikimedia.org. In the interim, there was a note placed on these files that states there is no evidence of permission.

This issue is resolved - at least I am now sure that the email was sent and it does contain permission from the copyright holder, the declaration of consent and links to both the files themselves and the article in which they appear. So, I would like to know if I can get the note removed. This doesn't seem to be something I can do.

There's also one more small problem. There was a typo in one of the filed I uploaded. In Jim McCormick's last name is misspelled in the second file. I put a tag on the image's page yesterday, but it doesn't seem to have had any effect. Perhaps I did not do this properly:

You refer to the {{No permission}} template at the top of each of these images:

The notices are directly editable. Just click the edit tab at the top of the image pages. The procedure you are trying to follow is in COM:OTRS. You tagged the last file for renaming, so all you can do is wait. It doesn't matter much if a filename contains a spelling error, as long as the description is correct. The filename is not visible to most Wikipedia readers, who only look at images displayed in articles without really digging in to see what the image filename is. --Teratornis (talk) 02:06, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

help! how do i upload stuff i got during a research visit at the "Archives of the Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site of the National Park Service"? they freely provide access to photos, plans and plant lists, asking only that reproductions be credited "Courtesy of Archives..." +++ for example, how do i credit my upload of a scan i made "Oldfields_Border_plantings,_Olmsted_job-6883,_sheet_88,_scanned_11_2007_orig_sz_29x24inch.jpg"? this is not a product by the US government but rather a historic document from a government administered archive. So, is the "Licensing" category "This work is in the public domain in the United States because it is a work of the United States Federal Government" correct?

The issue of copyright has been discussed in a public meeting of the Park Service (search for "copyright").[5] Material published before 1923 is {{PD-OLD}}. Material created by the US Federal Government, but not its contractors, is {{PD-USGov}}. I think that we must assume that File:Oldfields_Border_plantings,_Olmsted_job-6883,_sheet_88,_scanned_11_2007_orig_sz_29x24inch.jpg is protected and permission must be sought from the copyright holder, perhaps the heirs to the Olmsted estate. It may be helpful to discuss this with Superintendent Myra Harrison or Planner Jim O’Connell since they may have initiated similar discussions subsequent to the meeting cited above. I think that Commons would be pleased to host this content since it appears to be in COM:SCOPE, if the licensing problem can be resolved.

The pdf of the GMP meeting in Sept 2009 was unclear about archive material copyright. Not directly related is policy of the NPS digital image archive [[6]] [[7]] and [[8]] So today I sent a message to the Ntl Park Service archivist in charge of copyright issues at the Olmsted. I should get clarification tomorrow from the NPS regarding posting materials i obtained during my research visit. i'll then need to get some help with creating a Commons category for "interwiki links", please

May i ask a related follow-up question? I have used inter-library loan to borrow microfilms of Olmsted firm correspondence from the Manuscripts Division of the Library of Congress[[9]] . Our local microfilm reading machines can make digital as well as paper copies. I made digital copies since my USB-thumb drive is much more convenient -and cheaper- than several hundred xeroxed pages.

The archivist in charge of copyright permissions at the NPS Olmsted site replied, "We do own the copyright of Olmsted produced plans and drawings found in our collection and can grant permission to use those images. If the photographs and plans were produced by an outside firm or artist then we do not own the copyright. Should you wish to use any images obtained from our archive please send a list of those images to me and I will verify the citations and provide copyright permission where possible." See COM:REUSE. If you are not redistributing the photo, I doubt anyone will object if you just print it and put it on your wall. I suppose you could write the license terms on the back of your printout, with a link back to the Commons page, in case someone else should come to possess your printout. Museums typically use a small label on the picture frame or nearby on the wall. Be sure not to use GFDL-only-images, as the label would be at minimum A4- resp. letter size :-) If you print the attribution to the back side, it is not easily accessable. Well, if the picture is hanging on the original poster's office wall, to be primarily viewed by the O.P., nobody else needs to access the license. That would only be necessary if someone else comes to possess or copy the picture, at which time the next person could look at the back of the picture. Clearly that couldn't be any harder than figuring out the licensing terms on Commons - and on Commons we comply with the licensing, despite how difficult it is for people to figure out the reuse conditions. Given that the O.P. is not distributing the picture, I don't think this has to get harder than necessary. The wikipolice will probably not come knocking. As you seem very intent on getting a specific and explicit response, I have to point out that nobody here can give you legal advice, only opinions on how these licenses apply. Even if they're lawyers. :) As it says at Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia, "Please read the full licenses for legal details. Neither the Wikimedia Foundation nor the creators of material on Wikimedia sites provide legal advice. If you need information about how a license applies to your particular situation, you should contact a suitable legal professional in your jurisdiction." Even having a lawyer interpret the license may not get you out of trouble if you do it wrong, but it will go a good sight further than indicating that somebody told you here. That said, I myself would attribute on the front with at least a small note identifying the licensor and the license. If you can't do this discretely within the image, a matte or border around the image could be useful. I agree with smial that the more public the location, the more careful with attribution you need to be; "public performance" does not strike me as very well defined in the CC licenses (but that could just be me.) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 19:30, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

SVG rendering problem

I cannot get an image to render properly, part of the text appears jumbled together. Firefox renders the SVG file correctly at the upload URL [11] but File:Respiratory system complete tr.svg does not render as it should. I tried purging the server cache but that did not make a difference. I am using Inkscape on Windows using Arial fonts, if that's relevant. The 200px, 500px, 1000px, 2000px versions of the image on the server are from an earlier version and have not been updated either. I figured it out myself. It seems that the renderer that MediaWiki uses to create PNG images from SVG images does not handle proprietary fonts. I loaded the open-source "dejavu" fonts to my machine, used them instead of Arial and the image turned out fine. How to change a license

Your contributions suggest you might refer to File:Fischerhütte.JPG, although that is not your last contribution but your second to last, at the time you posted your question. Freeing up the license on my own file, done as SA by mistake?

Yes, it's possible. CC-BY is less restrictive then CC-BY-SA. Just edit images descriptions and change licenses accordingly. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 16:16, 25 January 2010 (UTC)

Merging of categories

You might want to tell us the categories, in the event that you've run across an odd case that would contradict the general advice you will get by not telling us. See COM:EIC#Cat for what should be links to everything about categories on Commons, or at least all the links the users who contribute to the index could find. In the worst case, you would pick one of the categories to keep, recategorize all the files or pages in the other category to be in the category you want to keep, then request deletion for the other category when you have emptied it. It is straightforward to have this gear combination on a multi-geared bike, for example on a touring bicycle or a mountain bike. Generally a 1:1 gear ratio is very low, for climbing steep hills. The small chainring on a triple-ring crank has a tooth count within the range of large sprocket clusters. See Bicycle gearing and Gear inches. However, when I log into Wiki Commons and search under fondant wedding cakes or wedding cakes I am unable to locate the image. Wikimedia Commons is not the english Wikipedia. If you post something on en.wikipedia you won't find it on Commons and vice versa. If you want to find/use that image on Commons you have to upload it to Commons. If you want to use it on several projects by Wikimedia (Wikipedia, Wikisource, Wikiquote,...) you need to either upload it to every project or you upload it to Commons. Second method is prefered. However on en:File:Wedding cake w fondant frosting.jpg http://www.brightweddingideas.com/cakes.htm is given as source and at the bottom of this page a text says "Copyright 2005 - 2010. All Rights Reserved. The material on this site may not be reproduced, distributed, transmitted, cached or otherwise used." I thereby highly doubt that this image is really self-made and anything else than a case for {{Copyvio}}. On en:File:Fondant wedding cake.jpg there is an OTRS ticket but I'm not sure if this is a real OTRS-ticket. Even you would have to upload this imge to Commons to find it here I wouldn't do so until the question of copyright is solved...

Can't see the image I uploaded even though it's shown in my contributions

Hi! I'm new here and trying to upload some images to add to an article that I am working on. I followed all the instructions & uploaded a photo. Everything looks right in my contributions but where the photo is supposed to show at least a thumbnail all I see is a small red x. Getting quite frustrated cuz I've tried everything I know and can't fix it. Please help! The file name is Familiaworoenlasmontañas.jpg. It´s only about 661kb. Any info would be greatly appreciated. The file used CMYK color space, which some browsers cannot display. I've re-uploaded it using sRGB color space. (My browser did display it, but way oversaturated.) Can you see it now? Lupo 15:46, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

Hey guys, thanks for all the help. I got it figured out. Part of the problem was the CMYK and part was using an image that had already been edited in a non-compatible program, I think. Merging accounts

Hi there. I was hoping someone could help me merge my accounts here. I started editing at Commons under the name Tiamat. My en.wiki account is Tiamut and when I globalized it, I sometimes get automatically logged in under that name. I can't figure out how to make the two one. Can someone help please? By "globalized" do you mean you went to Special:MergeAccount and followed the instructions? That's what I did; I had created my account on more than one Wikimedia Foundation wiki separately in the past, and they merged with no problems when I followed the instructions. But I had used the same username everywhere I made an account. What does Special:MergeAccount show you now? Symbol fonts in inkscape svg

Most likely you are using some font unsupported by mediawiki. Dirty workaround would be to convert your letters to paths (outlines} --Justass (talk) 12:51, 29 January 2010 (UTC)

The problem appears to be intermittent. For a couple hours before before saying so, I couldn't reach the page. An hour after user:Pruneau answered, it worked, but now it again does not. Anyway, thank you both, because at least now I know my procedure was corrct, and constant access to up-to-date counts is a luxury I can get along without. How include Ogg file in English Wikipedia?

How do I include an audio (Ogg Vorbis) file in an article in the English Wikipedia? If the audio file was not in Wikipedia commons then I would use the {{Listen}} template. However, this requires the filename to be entered without the leading "File:", so that if I add the "commons:" prefix then the template tries to play the file "File:commons:filename.ogg". This file, of course, does not exist. If I just include the link [[commons:File:filename.ogg]] then the file exists, but there is no play bar for people to actually play the file. I would suggest, however, that since Wikipedia is a wiki, that if an article doesn't exist that you would like you could create it. They do have some rules on conflict of interest and notability you may want to read first.
