Flag design copyright

Hello

I'd like to upload an alternative Australian flag design to Commons in order to feature it on the Wikipedia "Australian flag debate" page.

The design was the winner of the 2000 Ausflag professional designers flag competition (see: www.ausflag.com.au/winners.html)

At the time (and occasionally since) the design was reproduced in many newspapers and magazines to further discussion of the Australian flag debate. What would be the best copyright tag for this case? Could it be some sort of fair use without contacting the designer, given that it has been widely disseminated and promoted as an alternative flag design.

Permission for re-use

I would like to ask Stefan Kuhn if he'd allow us to use the image of his Anemometer in our book Cool Solutions for a Warming Planet to be published internationally later this year.

If you refer to an image uploaded here by User:Stefan Kühn, it is likely tagged with a licence. Contents of commons is free, that is may be freely reused (even commercially) under some basic conditions depending on the licence (typically identifying the author and mentionning the licence). No need. As long as you maybe link back here or something in the credits section of that book (like "Anemometer image courtesy of Stegan Kuhn - used under license - http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Anemometer.jpg"), and distribute an entire copy of the GNU Free Documentation License in that book (yeah, this makes we wonder why he didn't dual licence that image in particular with a {{Cc-by-sa}} like he does now). Screenshots of copyrighted Audio files

If I load a copyrighted audio file into, say Audacity, take a screenshot of the waveform and save it as a PNG file, is this considered for copyright purposes to be "different enough from the original to be regarded as a new work" (under derivative works law), so it can be uploaded under GFDL; or, is it regarded as a derivative work and thus requires a fair-use rationale? I'd argue that since the bandwidth of the image is such that the original waveform cannot be reconstructed, it is "different enough". Thanks, seen it. Deals mostly with images and to a lesser extent text, but doesn't consider the meaning of "different enough"; whilst I appreciate caution is advisable, I practised UK law rather than US, specifically California law, so some caselaw and the WMF opinion might be useful to have. This is a gray area, part of my mind says derivative work, yet part of my mind thinks it would be {{Pd-ineligible}} due to it just being lines generated by a mechanical algrothim (which has in a way, "no originality"). ViperSnake151 (talk) 14:37, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Update image

Hi, Maybe i can help you. If you go to this you can upload it under a new name. If you remove {{Information |Description= |Source= |Date= |Author= |Permission= |other_versions= }} And replace it with the source of User:SterkeBak/temp you don't have to fill all fields. All will be the same like the old image :).

Either you click the "upload a new version" link on Image:Conscription map of the world.svg to upload a new version, or you use the normal upload form at Special:Upload and enter "Conscription map of the world.svg" as the destination filename, whereupon all fields of that form bar one should become disabled. Describe your modifications in the one field left enabled, and click upload. Can't get much simpler. If fields do not become disabled on your computer, do a shift-reload (Firefox) or ctrl-reload (IE) while on the upload form. (Though that feature was added on August 4, all users really should have it by now.) Lupo 09:19, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Help uploading images

Recently I'm unable to upload certain images because every time I try to upload it the browser just says "waiting for commons.wikimedia.org" for a very long time, staying there just like that. Any idea why? --Officer781 (talk) 05:18, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

Gallery

in Category:Pipeline transport, a gallery page is embedded Pipeline_transport, but if I select picture Image:Tubulaçao transportadora de fluidos.jpg it shows no gallery found, so how can i fix it ? thanks Mion (talk) 16:40, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

The word is "Subcategorized" -- the gallery Pipeline_transport has been subcategorized to Category:Pipeline transport. The way to change the fact that the image is not in that gallery is to add the image to the gallery. It should not be a problem that the image is in both the gallery and the category, however, as it is a very small image, it might have been a decision to only put images into the gallery which are large enough to be useful for more than web display. -- carol (talk) 04:30, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
I understand, but by putting it in the gallery i'm declaring it one of the finer images of the category, which it is not (now for reasoning), so only the the finer images refer to each other by showing a proper (bleu gallery link). To be honest, I did not even know they had a guideline like that here. What I gave to you just then was my opinion as quoted from the opinion of a user who a few months ago touched every file that I touched and put them into a gallery (I was categorizing). It is also an opinion that I made while looking for images that were large enough for my purposes and finding what I needed to know in the category (where size and name are displayed) and not in the galleries (which often tell nothing about the image and like categories contain images which do not belong there).
About guidelines for projects like this. The fact that I did not even know that this existed is one of the reasons that I think that the simplest of "rules" should be made. Every opinion that I made was while I attempted to find images here which would serve a specific purpose. This opinion should make some sense given the manner in which I formed it. Not a complicated guideline, but the simple towards making images available here, easy to find for whatever purposes people might be wanting to find them for.
Perhaps one of the users who has been involved with this since 2004 can explain the reason that a guideline exists about making galleries? I suggest deleting that document and allowing sense and simplicity to guide. -- carol (talk) 05:58, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
Well, if a gallery structure is favored in ways of implementing it, there should also be a document on it, there is another thing with it, while users on commons try to categorize galleries, there is no mentioning about it on the document that preferable a category is added. That is not math. Somewhat it is but it is a failure of mathematicians to not assign the variables before starting the problem. In this situation, it is not math. When the need to abbreviate happens, especially in an international situation like it is here at the commons, it is (in my opinion) time to get out. Images

That's what I did. The Natural Resources Canada website mentions: "Some of the materials and graphical elements found on Natural Resources Canada web sites are subject to copyrights held by other organizations. This is particularly true of sites that are jointly operated by Natural Resources Canada and an external organization as part of a collaborative arrangement. In such cases, some restrictions on the reproduction of materials or graphical elements may apply and it may be necessary to seek permission from the rights holder prior to reproducing the material." The creator said I can use them without a problem and therefore I have permission to use them on Wikipedia. Is this something appropiate for GFDL? Black Tusk (talk) 17:54, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

Yes. I also have permission from Melanie Kelman. Photos on the Geological Survey of Canada website have the authors name below them, Catherine Hickson would be C.J. Hickson or C. Image from uk:WP - could someone upload it to Commons, please.

Hello, I found this Image uploaded to uk:WP which I'd like to use in de:Patch-Clamp-Technik and en:Patch Clamp. I've already contacted the original author, but she/he seems to be active only very occassionally. As far as I was able to decypher the image description it has been put under GDFL 1.2. I don't want to upload it to Commons myself due to my lack of ukrainian language skills. Could someone capable of understanding image description and license upload it to Commons, please. Thumbnail broken.

Hi. Bit of a newbie here as far as Wikimedia Commons are concerned and I have a question about a thumbnail that doesn't show up at the top of my gallery: [[1]]

Is there any way to fix these things or do you just report them here?

Which image thumbnail did was broken, they all seemed all right to me. Maybe you need to clear your browser's cache. If the problem is still there, let us know, which image's thumbnail you cannot see. --Matt314 (talk) 05:12, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

How do I edit file history comments for images?

I uploaded a revised image (same filename, only rescanned for higher resolution and color corrected) but I didn't include the reason for the reload in the comments. (I'm referring to the "comments" box that appears on the image page, below the main image, to the right of the file history image thumbnails). I don't think you can edit the file history. What you can do is reupload your revised file and comment the upload. I'll then delete the intermediate version. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 13:51, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

Corrupted image

er, this image here: Image:USAr.insignia.e9comm.wag22.png seems to be corrupted as I get the 404 error when I click on the link to the image, and the image page itself doesn't show the preview for the image. Is there any way to get it back?--Officer781 (talk) 09:14, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Resolved

I downloaded this file Image:2008-0419-GarthJennings.jpg to my computer, removed the redeye, then uploaded it over the existing image. It didn't work however to replace the current image. If I want to help in cleaning up images like reducing the redeye, how to I then upload it to replace the existing copy so the corrected version is available? I reverted all I did, so if someone can correctly change it, please do so, but explain how I can do it in the future, please.--JavierMC 04:11, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

downloading for use elsewhere

Hi - I cannot find this on first glance. One of the reasons I want to use Commons is to have my students be able to download and not just listen, but USE the file - in slideshows, video, etc. Is there any way to convert ogg to mp3 or wav? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.18.231.61 (talk • contribs) 2008-10-07T15:49:30 (UTC)

For information on reuse, please see Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia.
Although free licenses allow conversion into patented formats like MP3 (but not always into formats with DRM), it is better to use only free and open formats like Ogg with Vorbis or Speex and Theora, and not proprietary ones like MP3 or, worse, WMA. Those who want to use the result you have saved in MP3 will legally have to pay for a codec.
Also, converting Vorbis → MP3 or Vorbis → WAV → MP3 makes the quality worse, because both Vorbis and MP3 are lossy compression formats. An example of a popular free lossless format is FLAC.
Some of the programs that support playback of Ogg/Vorbis are listed here; many of them may support simple decoding. E.g. you could use ogg123 or Audacity.

OK this is weird. I removed the caption from image:Alfredo.jpg and uploaded it. When you go to the image in commons, it still shows the caption, yet if you click on the image there for the full resolution version, it shows the image I uploaded without the caption. problem: viewing image in high resolution

Det der på engelsk hedder "Derivative works", hvad er det på dansk og hvorfor er det ikke tilladt her på Commons? Da man selv har taget billederne, må man pr. definition selv have rettighederne til dem?

Jeg mener den korrekte term for "Derivative works" på dansk er "bearbejdelser". Det går ud på at man under visse omstændigheder ikke selv kan få ophavsretten på gengivelser af førstehåndsarbejder, selv om man er fotografen. I Danmark gælder der (så vidt jeg forstår) således ifølge COM:FOP at man godt må tage billeder af det ydre af bygninger i det offentlige rum, men ikke f.eks skulpturer, hvis kunstneren lever eller er død for midre end 70 år siden. Det er på Commons valgt at man (selv om serverne står i USA) vil henholde sig til de copyright regler, der gælder i det land hvori billedet er taget. Jeg håber dette svarre tilstrækkeligt på spørgsmålet. Jeg må pointere at det er den mpde jeg opfatter reglerne på, det er ikke noget jeg er ekspert i. hvis du vil have et mere fyldestgørese svar kan jeg anbefale dig at spørge på engelsk til f.eks. Hi, ich hab' in Italien dieses Bild gemacht und jetzt hochgeladen. Leider habe ich vergessen, den Polizist nach einer Erlaubnis zu fragen. Er hat vor vielen anderen Kameras "posiert" und sein Helm verdeckt fast die Hälfte seines Gesichts, insbesondere seine Augen. Ich weiß aber nicht, ob das genug ist, damit eine zusätzliche Erlaubnis unnötig ist. Was meint ihr, löschen?


Hi, i've made this photograph in Italy and now uploaded it. Unfortunately, I forgot to ask the policeman for permission to upload it. Well, he was posing in front of many cams and his helmet disguises nearly 50% of his face, especially his eyes. But I dont know if that's enough to make a additional permission unnecessary. Question Re Uploading an Image to the WIKI Commons

I am trying to upload an image from my home computer to the WIKICommons.

I am logged in.

The error message says that there is no file by the name that I specify.

I have checked the spelling and it is OK

I need to know how to correctly specify the path to the source image

OR perhaps the file name should not end in .jpg ???

The image is located on my machine at 


      C:\Users\Norman\Documents\TIMBRO\WIKIscans  and the file name is  E7STD.jpg

When you get to the upload box, next to the location field there should be a browse button. If you browse to the file location on your system and click on it there, it will enter the information in the box and you should be able to continue to fill out the appropriate fields of the submit form. This is probably the easiest method, as it keeps any misspellings from occurring in location. Hope that helps. --JavierMC 01:44, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

You can reupload under a other name. Go to the old image and tag it with {{Duplicate|newname.jpg}} A admin can change all links with CommonsDelinker than. Sterkebaktalk 13:19, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Image upload problem

licensing different on same image on en version copied over

Hey there, hoping someone can assist who knows the licesing tags used here at commons. On Image:1CanadaSquare.jpg the license is given as GFDL but on the version on the english WP, it is a different license. When I copy the license template over from the english page, it is different here. Perhaps someone can find the matching coresponding version on Commons. Using a still image from a movie

I am writing an article about an actor on Wikipedia. Is it allowed to use a screen shot from a movie to display on his Wikipedia page? The still shot I want to use will not include a full movie scene, just the actor's likeness.

Lewes Pound

I have a Lewes Pound, and would like to add an image to the Lewes article. Question is, which licence would it come under? Can it be used under a free licence or would it have to be uploaded to Wikipedia under a fair use rationale as a copyright image. Categorising mistake?

Working on the electrical categories someone made me aware of a misspelling, and I can't correct it. Electricity meters are in fact kWh meters and for professional electricians it hurts to see KWh meters. I can't correct it, I found. So it is possible the the software created that KWh itself. I think that all the wiki's convert systematically all first letters in uppercase, why en:Deus (band) cannot be properly spelled like dEUS. Such difficult kWH lower/uppercase rules is asking for problems. Why not simply using a more popular name like en:Electricity meter (or en:Power meter). I asked Erik how to use the command, as it didn't work the way I used it. I have an escape: Category:Electricity meters (kWh). An electricity meter counts the kWh's in our house, not MegaWatt's and GigaWatts in plants and factories. If both of you pefer this solution, it is not necessary to use the given command. Unfortunately in that case I have to switch the files again.

Another question, as I have to work for people outside the profession. We have domestic electricity devices, as connectors, socket outlets and switches. I found Category:mains plugs and Category:mains sockets. Is it usefull to create a new category for the switches, mains switches or light switches? Re-upload hiccup

I tried to replace Image:RiggingDiagram.jpg, which I created and uploaded, with a more recent, and more correct version, which appears on Commons here: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a6/RiggingDiagram.jpg but does not appear on the image page, nor does it appear on the wikipedia article where it is needed. Can you help figure this out and not have similar problems if I need to do this again in the future? (Of the two images, the correct one is the one where the four circles are UNEVENLY placed...) How to add a photo to a photo gallery

Dear Helpdesk Folks --

No doubt I am overlooking something obvious but anyway I need help.

I am attempting to add a photo to the photo gallery at http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cimitero_acattolico_di_Roma#Galleria_fotografica

In August 2008, I added the photo to the commons. Its name is:

However, I see that the one I put in the Commons has disappeared. Did someone delete it? I have studied the edit history but see no evidence of this... Perhaps I am reading it wrong.

Re=upload image on Imette St. Guillen

Some time ago, specifically on February 25, 2008, I uploaded an image of murder victim, Imette St. Guillen. Specifically, this was an image from a memorial program pamphlet that was handed out at a John Jay College function for her which function I attended. There was no copyright marks or artist/photographer credits on the image or in the program. For some reason, this image was deleted off of her Wikipedia entry "Murder of Imette St. Guillen". Now I had scanned the image seeing no copyright or other problem with same. If I rescan, will this now be accepted? The photograph is copyrighted, no matter whether there is a copyright notice. If this really was the first publication of the photograph, it would be an anonymous work and protected (depending on jurisdiction) for 70 years from publication. If the photographer was given in a previous publication, it is protected for 70 years from the photographer's death. In any case, it is not free. You would have to find out the photographer and ask for permission. --rimshottalk 06:24, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Tagging for deletion, and other fixes

Merge new upload of DVI_Connector_Types.svg into the original

After making a minor change to the SVG of DVI Connectors, as discussed on the Talk page at en.wikipedia for Digital Visual Interface, I went to upload the changes as a new version of the original Image:DVI_Connector_Types.svg here.

As this is my first time using Wikimedia Commons (I've made minor edits on Wikipedia for a while), my upload was blocked, directing me to upload with a new filename and ask here for it to be merged in.

After this is completed, will I be able to make other uploads (like cascading my changes to Image:Dvi-d_types.svg) without this process?

Linking Photo Uploads to an Existing Gallery

I have tried several times to get my photo uploads of Tampa Union Station to appear in the Union Station (Tampa) gallery. No problems with the uploading or licensing, but the photos never appear in the Commons. Linking them to the gallery is not working. Not so much. But Union Station (Tampa) isn't a category but a gallery. So you have to add the files to the gallery manually. And use copy/past on the filename, to avoid problems with sub- and superscript. --Stunteltje (talk) 06:37, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Derivative of a photo on Commons (toolserver down)

Hi. I'm trying to upload a derivative version of a photo on Commons (this one), but the toolserver seems to be down. (When, on the upload form, I click on "It is a derivative work of a file from Commons", I get a "server not responding" message.) I'm not very familiar with the main upload form, or what templates are appropriate for a derivative use. Could somebody please walk me through what I need to do on the main upload form page? Why did life get difficult?

Hi. Previously I would load a pic ; lets call it Gazania pecinata. I would then put the name of the pic in the search box, which would then tell me that there was no such page, and would I like to create it? I would then click on the red Gazania pecinata and lo and behold, would get to a new page where I could put the image. I have just done that for a disa that i uploaded and rather than beig helpful, it merely told me that there was no such page. This led to some rather difficult acrobatics in order to get the page created. Is there any reason for making the system more complicated? P.S. While I am whinging, Is there any reason to create categories for pages? This seems to have happened to most of the ericas while I wasnt looking? Andrew massyn (talk) 15:49, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

Galleries and categories can and do co-exist via wiki-software -- there is no real need to choose one or the other and recently a few users have expressed the opinion that the galleries should contain the nicest of the images of a subject while categories should contain all of the images of a subject. In addition to there being no real reason to opt for one wiki display over the other, there is a bot which marks images now if they are uncategorized and uploaders of images who do not include categories create cumbersome work for others.
I happen to prefer the categories over the galleries as the management of them tends to be more like managing a database which is, in my opinion, what commons is more than a collection of articles -- a database of images of subjects. To enclose an image in gallery tags without putting more information into the comment section of the gallery is to display less information about the image than the categories do and this has been a problem for my attempts to find (in particular) images of species of plants. To insist on the categorization of images should allow the making of more informative galleries by those who are into that gallery thing.... -- carol (talk) 22:32, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

You would know if this information is useful and/or interesting and probably I wouldn't know it until I needed such information. What I do know is that a collection of images becomes more interesting and informative when the display options are used to make them more interesting and informative. I did that also and then one day, I started to look into it just a little more than what was here that I was simply pasting. My plan/idea is that the genera is already here and needs just a simple template paste on to new species categories or galleries. Why this file is not displayed well ?

Hello! I uploaded en:Image:Lindos2.svg as Image:Acoustic weighting curves.svg to use it in ja.wikipedia. (I used the name which was suggested in en:image:Lindos2.svg.) But the file is not displayed well. I wondered that it may happened because of its name. So I uploaded it again as Image:Lindos2.svg. But there is no difference. I compared these files with file compare tool. But I could find no differnce between these 3 image files. I have uploaded some svg files to commons. But I have never met such problem. Image:Acoustic weighting curves.svg displays fine on my machine. Commons has experienced display troubles in the past few days; your problem may be related. Try reloading the page when you're viewing your image (Ctrl + Shift + R in Firefox) or purging the cache of your browser. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 13:48, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
I guess the thumbnail that is displayed at enwiki is old, and the difference is because the one for the copy at Commons was generated after the switch to Ubuntu with different versions of the conversion software and font set. --AVRS (talk) 14:07, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Error in accessing my gallery

Will some one on the help desk try to resolve my problem, please? The problem is that Filbot has automatically introduced the following comment on my talk page. Filbot, "There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license." The two images are the following.

I cannot access my gallerry due to the following error appearing on the top of the page.

Unknown deleted pages

To Whom It May Concern:

I work for the United States Army. On Sepetember 4, I posted two wikis about our equipment that were immediately deleted for "blatant Advertising." My office is trying to post information about our equipment so accurate cleared information is available to the public. None of the equipment I will post about is for sale as the public cannot buy our equipment. Please let me know what I have to do in order to post wikis of this kind without having them deleted.

Fehlermeldung

Hi, bin noch relativ neu hier auf Commons und kenne mich daher noch nicht so aus.... Seit ein paar Tagen kommt in meiner Galerie nur noch die Fehlermeldung "Database Error: Unknown database 'commonswiki_p' (sql-s3) on sql-s3/commonswiki_p Failed to connect to database! Most data is up to date again, but one copy of the commons database is badly outdated. This means some tools may show wrong information for some wikis. Other eyes?

Hi. I'm a contributor at the English language Wikipedia (unified login). I have little experience with image work there and even less with it here. I used a handy bot to bring over an image from the German Wikipedia for the purpose of including it at wikipedia:Amalie von Wallmoden, Countess of Yarmouth. It's Image:Amalie Sophie von Wallmoden.jpg. There's a tag on it that indicates "It requires review because CommonSense could not categorise the image during transfer." Since it's loaded with categories, I suspect this means something other than the sense that I know it. :) I'd be grateful if somebody could take a look at this and either address any concerns there or let me know what, if anything, needs to be done to it. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:09, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

I work for the U.S. Army and I published two wikis on September 4. They were removed for "blatant advertising." I am trying to make wikis on the equipment we produce for our Soldiers. It is not advertising since the public cannot purchase anything we make. We are looking to get accurate information to the public about what we produce. Could someone tell me what I have to do going forward to ensure that the wikis I create will not be deleted?

Hi, i have to updated this image Image:MacedoniaNameDisputeMap.svg to this version Image:MacedoniaNameDisputeMap1.svg. Since i cant do it (im here just few hours now) can someone else update the Image:MacedoniaNameDisputeMap.svg to this Image:MacedoniaNameDisputeMap1.svg. Second question: i have used Adobe Illustrator to edit the SVG file, i dont know why its not 940 × 415 pixels but smaller even if its vector O.o thank you, Alex Makedon (talk) 21:52, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

What is included in the license?

  • Aha. Welcome to our free repository. You can read all about our licensing at Commons:Licensing but I will give you the rundown. We require everything here to be absolutely free for everything you can think of, commercial use, printing in brochures, making changes to the pictures etc. You are not limited to web use or limited run. Print a billion copies if you want. There are no fees or royalties. There are some basic restrictions, however, which depend on the specific license of the image. If you want a specific answer on a specific image just say which one and we'll help you, but here are the most common things to understand:
  1. If the work is public domain, do whatever you like with it. It is considered courteous to mention the name of the author and the source.
  2. Most licenses on Commons require attribution. You should mention the URL of the image, and the name of the author. You can use the uploader's nickname, but some people prefer their real name. You can leave a message on the uploader's talk page to ask what name they prefer. If you get no answer, don't worry, you don't need their permission, it's already given by the license.
  3. Most licenses also require you state which license you are using, so if for example the license is cc-by-sa, you should include the name of the license. Some, such as the GFDL are more strict and require re-printing the entire text of the license. You could put this in a legalese section at the back of your brochure with a footnote on the image saying which page the license was on. If the image is available under multiple licenses, you only have to pick one.
  4. Some licenses have what's called a sharealike clause. What this means is because you got the image for free, you are required to share alike. In other words if someone re-uses your work, you must let them. With most sharealike licenses, this only applies to the picture itself. So if you photoshop the picture in some way, anything you do to it must be shared under the same license. The GFDL, again, is more strict. Under the GFDL you must make your entire brochure sharealike.
