i want it because im planning on doing Wikipedia pages (in Portuguese) of his books

thank you

 • Pretty sure it's copyrighted, if you're making Wikipedia pages and want to use this book cover you'll have to use it under fair use (see your local wiki's policies on that to find out how it works). It's not suitable for upload to Commons (or to any wiki under a free license as it's not freely licensed). Naerii (talk) 19:08, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
Portuguese WP doesn't allow picture uploads as is commonly known, so they also can't accept fair use. The book cover itself has no threshold of originality so it would be no problem to upload it here. The only problem is the little logo of the publisher (bicycle) which is copyrighted. If you can find a version without that logo, you could upload it, but otherwise you will have to ask the publisher to release the whole cover under a free licence. -- Cecil (talk) 07:47, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

deleting wrong photo

I've loaded Image:Capparis spinosa fruit opened ; but at first by mistake i loaded a wrong one. then i tryed to replace it and loaded another. the right one is in there, but when opening it shows the one that i want to remove. how can i make that the latest one will be shown? and beter, how to delete the wrong picture? thanks, Eitan f (talk) 05:20, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

It's a cache problem, refresh the page (Ctrl+R) to see the newest version.
I can delete the older version but I need to be sure which one it is. Can you confirm that the correct version is the one uploaded at 18:34, and that I must delete the versions of 18:13 and 18:45? Jastrow (Λέγετε) 06:49, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
Thank you Jastrow. yes, the right one is of 16:34 and the other two should be deleted. (btw, are you related to Marcus Jastrow of the Talmudic dictionary?) Eitan f (talk) 09:42, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
Done. (No, my username alludes to Joseph Jastrow (more precisely to his famous duck-rabbit image), Marcus' son, but I am not related to the Jastrow family). Jastrow (Λέγετε) 11:07, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

I am totally confused about uploading a corporate logo. I'd like to put it under the non-free licensing category. Help. I uploaded image:Fabrik_Red_Logo_low_res.jpg‎ but I can't find where to change its licensing status. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brightblue (talk • contribs) 16:59, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

If you will please refer to COM:L you will see that Commons only accepts free media. We do not have nor accept non-free images. If this image is to be used for an English Wikipedia article, I suggest you uploaded it there as they accept "Fair Use". Thank you for your understanding. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 17:13, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

License tag, revisited...

Hello, wise ones. OK, I thought I did everything right.

So what's up with this red thing under "Tags"? Looks like some sort of warning. *Sigh*

Thanks much. Snakesteuben (talk) 13:59, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Oddly enough, the "no license tag" warning means your file hasn't got any license tag ;-) Even though you mention explicitly that the picture is in the Public Domain, it's best to use a license tag. PD-user would do the trick here. On a side note, it would be best IMO if you mentioned explicitly the original file, maybe in the "source" line (e.g. "cropped by User:Snakesteuben from Image:Tree Swallow-27527-3.jpg"). Jastrow (Λέγετε) 14:08, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for your help, Jastrow. I will duplicate the link I put in the "other versions" section in the source line as well. (That was one suggestion I got the first time I asked this question, my first explicit mention wasn't clickable).
Jastrow, oh, gee, on second look I now notice that said clickable link was tweaked by user Ken Thomas so it now appears as a thumbnail. Perhaps the original link might have qualified as the explicit mention you wish to see, but the thumbnail does not? If that is a concern, do I need to take any precautions to ensure that the (second) explicit mention in the source line will not be similarly tweaked by another user?
Now, I'll ask again if anyone else has any additions, side notes, opinions, etc., to add to what I was told the first time when I said "I have a boatload of these, please tell me now if there is anything wrong," using this specific upload as my template example (see archived request first link above)? Glad I didn't actually rely on the silence after the first couple messages. ;-) Yeah, I know you guys are busy. And knowing that uploads are preferred on commons rather than my own wiki, I want to do the right thing. Still, just IMO, commons seems riddled with (occasionally inconsistent) technicalities, and it really bugs me sometimes. Valid local uploads, though they impart the same information, really are a lot less difficult to construct.
Thanks again. Snakesteuben (talk) 18:12, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
What Ken did is fine. The important thing is for the visitor to be able to easily find the original picture if they wish so. A derivative picture is probably one of the most tricky uploads; I'm perfectly happy with what you did. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 22:28, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Coat of arms image from a government website - is it legal?

Hi, I'm planning to update the article of the town of Folkestone, in the UK. The only place where I could find the official coat of arms for the town was from the Town Council website, which is a part of a more general website (Parish Councils of Kent). Am I breaking any copyright rules if I use that image? By the way, I am planning to use the logo on both the English and the Spanish articles about the town.

Thanks in advance

Based on what I saw at w:Image:Bristol city coa.png, I believe the coat of arms for British towns are copyrighted. However, if you are planning to add the image on the English Wikipedia you may be able to upload it there under fair use (but not on commmons as commons does not have fair use)Anonymous101 talk 08:02, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Administrative deletion of images without notification to the uploader

Shouldn't an administrator who deleted an image also have the ability to articulate what the perceived problem was? -- carol (talk) 08:12, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

What kind of pictures are we talking about here? Jastrow (Λέγετε) 09:38, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
Screenshot. Mozilla, no bookmarks. English Wikipedia, an administrative procedure there. Pure documentation of actual events. -- carol (talk) 09:50, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
Oh, and the logo was concealed due to potential copyright problems. -- carol (talk) 09:50, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
If you disagree with an administrator's actions, the polite thing to do is take it to their talk page first, and only go elsewhere (hint, you want COM:AN) if you can't resolve it with the admin. If you are disappointed with the response you're getting from me, you might want to consider the difficulty users have in communicating with you. But please, keep it all in one place if possible. —Giggy 11:14, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, I will think about that.... -- carol (talk) 11:27, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

The image itself was fine, but it was uploaded under a title that was intended as a personal attack on an English Wikipedia administrator, and its only purpose was to grace a page that was created as a personal attack on the same English Wikipedia administrator. There's no doubt in my mind that COM:AN would endorse the deletion, as do I. Hesperian 13:06, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Badname Rename is the way to change names of images here suggested with the complete understanding that the recent opinion has been expressed by an administrator who is more recent to administration here than the issue that was portrayed in the screenshot. Badname Rename is a template that can be used by anyone, without review by trusted users. It is a method to change names of images without creating a huge incident. It is MELLOW. The suggestion of AN here is also very recent to be suggested so much. -- carol (talk) 19:30, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Okay, but how about changing the name of an article without tagging it for deletion? I'm willing to add Badname to this one if I didn't think it meant uploading the image all over again. ----DanTD (talk) 20:00, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
Eh, at 19:30, 3 August 2008 (UTC) carol was new to this day. The suggestion should have been Rename as I changed my earlier text to show and as I have added to the image recently mentioned here. If you can think of a more descriptive name for your image (without being offensive to any user who might have actually participated in a sequence of events that caused the uploading of that image) feel free to change the name that I suggested in the template. -- carol (talk) 20:55, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
Articles can be moved. The gallery that I had in my userspace was an incident which happened to me; the deletion of the gallery did not delete the incident. It was explained to me that there was some embarrassment that was involved also that was part of the cause of the deletion. I suggest that deleting a gallery is not a method of deleting embarrassment either. That is an opinion of mine, btw. Renaming a gallery within a persons users space should probably be managed by administration/users who are not so new to commons, which is also an opinion of mine. -- carol (talk) 21:02, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
I hope this can be moved, and the name you chose was perfect. I should look for more images of mine that should be renamed. ----DanTD (talk) 02:42, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Webmaster would like to put their site's images (but not text) under free license. What to do?

For Wikipedia articles related to the BOINC distributed computing platform (e.g. Rosetta@home), I'd like to include charts from BOINCstats.com (e.g. a chart for Rosetta@home's daily performance). The images in question are currently under the Creative Commons by-nc-nd, a non-free license, and thus cannot be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons or Wikipedia.

I've started a dialog with the webmaster of BOINCstats, and he would like to put the images, but not the text, on the site under the Creative Commons by-sa license. Is this possible? Below is his response to my petition for free licensing on his site:

"Well, I have a problem with the more open license. I have no problem putting the images under the cc-by-sa license, but this license is too open for the rest of BOINCstats. I explicitly do not want to give permission to use the text (data) on the pages. I have had to many problems with scrapers in the past and this would give them legal permission to do just that.

So, a question I have not found answered so far: can I either have the license limited to the images or can I have a separate license for the pages themselves.

The first option would read something like:

Statistics images on BOINCstats are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Netherlands License.

Any advise, ideas?"

Thanks for any input. Emw2012 (talk) 17:11, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Photos of shops which include the logos

Hi, I'd like some guidance about photos of shops which I think should be freely licensed but which include as a smallish part of the whole shop the logo or some other design connected to the firm. An example would be HMV. At Wikipedia the logo is tagged as non-free, but the image of the shop here is tagged as PD, even though it includes the picture of the little dog. I'm not questioning this - in fact it makes sense to me. But I want to double check before I upload too many images of shop windows myself. Thank you. Stratford490 (talk) 06:43, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

I think it depends on Commons:Freedom of panorama, is logo pure text or is it main subject of photo. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:59, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for that link. It seems that buildings and also statues in public places in the UK can be freely licensed, unless I'm misunderstanding something. I had been less sure of statues than of buildings. I've just uploaded this, and would appreciate if someone more experienced could take a look to check that it really is okay, before I add it to an article at Wikipedia. Thank you. Stratford490 (talk) 19:39, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
The problems I have seen here are the French buildings and panoramas and others. If there is something wrong with this image, other than something specific to the rules of the location it was taken at, then perhaps 300,000 or more of the 3 million images that are here will have to go. There are a lot of photographs of statues here.... -- carol (talk) 19:49, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. I take it that means that the photo of that statue is okay. One reason for hesitating was that the page for uploading my own work[1] specifically mentions statues as things that should not be uploaded here. But the Freedom of panorama page suggests that statues in public places in the UK are fine. Stratford490 (talk) 20:23, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
Changing the skin I used here from monobook to classic got rid of that upload dialog which I was unable to use. Due to recent changes, toggling "classic upload" in your preferences will further reduce what I consider to be the bother of uploading here, although these are options that suit different needs and opinions and I have only listed the things that worked for my opinions and needs. -- carol (talk) 20:38, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Fuzzy translations

Hi, folks.

What's the commons procedure for "fuzzying" translated resources? I.e., how do you let language maintainers know when a substantive change is made to something important like a copyright template?

Example: Changing the text from "author" to "copyright holder" in the PD-self template way back in April 2007 was obviously a big deal. But it looks like a number of localisation teams didn't get the word, and translations still use the words for "author / creator / maker," etc.

Thanks much, Snakesteuben (talk) 22:06, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

I put the welcome template on your talk page which starts to have instructions for this situation. However, it is not considered to be a problem to keep the earlier versions here and so there is no direct way (that I know of) to delete them. -- carol (talk) 09:43, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Geocoding

I recently up loaded this image to the commons, and wanted to include geocoding information, so Google Maps and other apps could find it. I included GPS coordinates, but I don't think I did it correctly.

Please correct my errors if any, and provide better information in your FAQs on geocoding. For example, when I search "geocoding" in the the Commons I get no results.

Thanks!

Hi, and thanks for your contribution! The page you're looking for is Commons:Geocoding. Unfortunately, Commons' search facility is designed for searching for media, not for documentation. It's unfortunate, but Commons is primarily a media repository. Contributors may be best served by going to Commons:Welcome to start, or making sure to select the "Commons" namespace when doing a search (at Special:Search).
I'm glad you included coordinates in your image! We have a template Location (and Location dec for decimal coordinates) for geocoding; you can edit your image description and use Location dec, plugging in the latitude and longitude, and it should work.
Also, you should sign your posts with ~~~~, and you can link images by using a colon: :Image:Rock Lodge Stone House circa 1938.jpg produces Image:Rock Lodge Stone House circa 1938.jpg.

Possible language related bug?

Hi, folks. Would somebody do this for me:

1. Go into your personal settings, and change your language to dsb - Dolnoserbski. (Nothing overly special about that language--just one example I know works--or rather, didn't work.)

2. Send your browser to the master wikimedia page: http://www.wikimedia.org/

3. Click commons. Does it take you to the main page? It didn't for me. It took me to a redlink, and invited me to create the page. If you have the same results, don't bother trying to get there by clicking main page in the navigation side bar. (Głowny bok that is.) You'll end up in the same place.

If this happens to you, too, and if you want, I can tell you what I've figured out so far. (Which is unfortunately, just the mismatch and where it comes from, and not how to fix it. So somebody may be way ahead of me.)

Thanks, Snakesteuben (talk) 22:50, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

I see the same thing. Can you fix it by creating the main page in Dolnoserbski? --Amble (talk) 07:25, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Hi, Amble, thank You very much for Your answer and Your trouble.
Unfortunately, I speak neither that language, nor the many others that are likewise affected. I believe the issue should be addressed systemically rather than episodically. I can do so fairly easily, but without administrator privileges, my solution isn't as elegant as it could be. If there's still nobody who cares after one week, I will hack it take care of it. Cheers, Snakesteuben (talk) 15:49, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
What's the solution you have in mind? The only one that I can think of is to have a default page in a well-known language. --Amble (talk) 19:03, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

If you want to replace the current image (because you made corrections, for example), click on "Upload a new version of this file" on the image page. If you want to upload your new version as a separate file, and keep both of them, clik "Upload file" in the list of links to the left, under the Wikimedia Commons logo. --Amble (talk) 07:22, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

I'm back! Would it be ok to just save pic to my comp and then link the image to the image page I got it from? 78.148.128.50 20:19, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

That is what I did when I used images from here on my web site but I also included the name that was listed as author and linked to the image location here (if I remember correctly). Some of the licenses here ask for attribution which (I think) means that the author would like to keep their name with the image. Not all of the licenses include that stipulation but for the number of images I was working with, it was easier to default to the too much side of the information scale on all of them. -- carol (talk) 21:21, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks Carol, I like to keep the info of images I use with them, it seems only fair. I'll go with that plan then :)
It's odd there isn't more info for users of the images! 78.148.128.50 22:11, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
It is all there in the license. More than mentioning the license and where to read what that says would be an incredible amount of redundant text (more than 3 million now). -- carol (talk) 22:20, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
People like me, could do with a basic idiots guide lol. Like "How to use images" in the participate section. Bet loads just get used without regard to the liecences. But then I am pretty dence with these things...... as you can no doubt tell LOL. I really appreciate your help though and will be putting images on my site tomorrow :) Cheers Carol :)
There's a page to answer this question here: Commons:Reusing_content_outside_Wikimedia - but unfortunately it's still somewhat involved. The difficulty is that not all the images on Commons have the same licensing terms. You can find the specific licenses on each image's information page, with a link to the full requirements. However, all images here do have to meet some basic free content requirements. I think you will be safe for just about any Commons images if you give credit to the uploader and a link to the Commons page. About downloading the pictures: yes, save a copy to your computer, and put the copy on your web site. Make sure to click on the image to get the full-resolution version when you save it. Which specific images do you have in mind? If you post the file names, we can check on them for you. Hope this helps! --Amble (talk) 07:17, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
It's funny, I just came on to start using some images and stumbled onto the link you just gave! I couldn't find that at all yesterday! Thank you so much for your offer to check the images for me, but I know what I need to look for now thanks to you guys :) so I feel confident to do it myself now. Thankfully I now know where to come when I decide to upload images and can't do it LOL.... I see you all running to the hills as I type LOL.

b) Image:Baulinanakjheerasaab.JPG

What is the correct method for this transfer since the above files do not indicate the license details? can you help me transfer the above files. My Wikimedia Commons file name is Nvvchar--Nvvchar (talk) 10:13, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

I'm confused. Where are the images now? You mentioned a Sikhi Wiki article, but I don't see a Sikhi-language Wikipedia listed here, and I'm only familiar with the Sikh religion (not a Sikhi language). Perhaps it would help if you could give links to the images. --Amble (talk) 19:11, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Aha, I found it. The images are on SikhiWiki, the Encyclomedia of the Sikhs. It's a Wiki with a similar look and feel, but not under Wikimedia. Unfortunately, I don't see any licensing information for the images. Unless someone can find the license details, they cannot be used here at all.
Perhaps there's a general image license policy for all of SikhiWiki? --Amble (talk) 19:25, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
SikhiWiki does have a page about copyrights, here. Unfortunately, it may not mean much. It seems to be cribbed from Wikipedia; there's no attribution, but they forgot to change "Wikipedia" to "SikhiWiki" in several places. I don't think we can rely on this. The only option may be to contact the uploader directly. --Amble (talk) 19:29, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Self taken pictures of ships

Hello, i'm new here and uploded my first 3 pictures of a polish and a norwegian tall ship in/near harlingen (netherlands) which i did during a holiday. But now i'm confused about the copyright situation. Can anyone tell me if there if there might be copyright issues of the ship owners?

If ships is not covered with advertisement, it should be only industrial design what is OK to take photo of. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:54, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia Taxobox image use?

Quick question: I have managed to upload my file to Commons, and I understand how to place it in a Wikipedia article. However, I'm having trouble figuring out how to put the photo (or actually, a thumbnail thereof) into a Taxobox. Can anyone walk me through this? I think I am not sourcing the image correctly. (Every time I do it, rather than the image, there is a red/broken link with the name of the image.) I'd like to do this with a number of files in the future, so any help is appreciated. Thanks awfully!
- Jeyradan (talk)

A taxobox is not very much used overhere; we are already lucky if the image has the right categories or is used somewhere in a gallery.. So you need to give an example where you want to use it (should be not different on any Wikipedia). --Foroa (talk) 10:43, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Thank you! I'm looking to add an image to this particular box - and, if I can successfully learn how to do it, to update various other taxoboxes constructed in the same way (so the process should translate). The box I would like to edit is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinopterus. Thanks again!
- Jeyradan (talk)
See also Taxonavigation. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:56, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Have you sought assistance at English wikipedia for this? The taxonavigation here is very different than the taxoboxen there. -- carol (talk) 23:39, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
When linking the image inside an info box, you may need to leave out the usual and . The template probably adds these in on its own, so if you also give square brackets, you wind up with something like [[]]. --Amble (talk) 03:12, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

how do i upload a photography

 • Hi there. The first thing you need to do is create an account. Once you have logged in, if you look underneath 'participate' in the navigation menu on the left of your screen, you will see a link to upload a file: Upload file. From there you can upload an image, by selecting first the most appropriate description of the work you are trying to upload. Hope this helps. Naerii (talk) 21:54, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Licensing problem?

I got the following message from Filbot: There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above?

I uploaded an image 2 which I found on the German Wikipedia and which has full license information available. I followed directions on the uploading page of Commons and used the template provided, mentioning the licensing info as found on the German Wikipedia. But using this template apparently did not work properly. How can I resolve this? Encyo (talk) 11:38, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Unified log in

I had a log in at the Commons (Gabbhhh) and now with the new unified log in, I have a second one, Gabbhh. How can I join them so my previous history (in Gabbhh) is kept in my new unified log Gabbhh? Thanks! Gabbhh (talk) 15:47, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

 • Hi, at this time it's not actually possible to merge the histories of two seperate accounts. However:
 • If you ask for your global account to be un-unified at meta
 • Then ask here for Gabbhh to be renamed to some random thing, and Gabbhhh to be renamed to Gabbhh
 • And then re-unify
 • Your SUL will contain your edit history as Gabbhhh whilst renaming you to Gabbhh. This is assuming you still have the password to your old account. naerii 16:46, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

old patriarch

I found a website with some pictures of old patriarchs of Constantinople in which several wikipedia's might be interested, http://patriarchateofconstantinople.com/patriarchs.htm I assume these old pictures are PD. There are articles on Wikipedia about these men. I uploaded one as a test (see image), but I could upload several more if this is indeed permitted.

Some comments? Elly (talk) 09:58, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Why should this be in the public domain? Constantine VI was patriarch 1924-1925, and lived 1859-1930. Without info about the photographer and the first publication of this photo we cannot keep this image. For photos taken that recently, it is quite possible that they're still copyrighted. See also Commons talk:Licensing#Old images without an author, in particular the subsection "How long is enough?". Lupo 10:16, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the link. The discussion ranges from 300 years to only 70. Apparently no consensus on this subject? I thought I heard if the photographer is unknown (like on this website), you can safely use 70 years after the subject deceased. Elly (talk) 10:47, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
The discussion ranges from 200 to 120 years at the moment. The web site doesn't say the photographer was unknown. They just don't give the photographer's name, possibly because they don't know him either. Where's the reliable and verifiable source saying he was unknown in general? Lupo 10:51, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
Oh, and the subject's death doesn't enter the equation except by giving a cutoff year for the creation of the photo. If the status as "anonymous work" of this photo could be ascertained, the copyright term in countries with a 70-year rule would be "70 years after the creation of the photo, or 70 years after its publication, if published within 70 years after its creation". And if first published more than 70 years after the creation, beware of the publication right. Also, if the photo was copyrighted in its source country (Greece? Turkey?) in 1996, it became copyrighted in the U.S., too, with a term of 95 years since the first publication (if published before 1978), or (if first published 1978-2002, inclusive) of at least until the end of 2047, or (if unpublished or published after 2002) of 120 years since creation. Lupo 11:00, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
Okay, I was not aware of the publication date. Which means an old picture from an album can virtually never be used during our lives. Clear, thanks. Elly (talk) 11:20, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
Yes, media companies can afford to buy new copyright laws, so that in practice copyrights don't expire any more. The rule of thumb is that anything post-Mickey Mouse will never be in the public domain. --Amble (talk) 16:13, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
LOL, post and including Mickey Mouse I presume. I am confident, however, the free content movement will grow and will win eventually. Elly (talk) 14:27, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Delete a version

Hi. How can I delete a version of a photo I uploaded here to the Wikimedia Commons? And how do I post date and name behind each post, such as this one?

The last question I can answer. You add 4xtilde (~). Regards, Elly (talk) 14:42, 14 August 2008 (UTC). Many thanks Elly, regards Selkki (talk) 14:47, 14 August 2008 (UTC). Can anyone help me with the other problem, how to delete 2 of 3 versions of the same photo that I uploaded?
Those are fantastic images! I was very surprised when I looked closely at the image of a group of Sami. At first I only saw people's faces, leather clothes, teepees, dogs... but then I noticed the man holding a teacup and saucer! I noticed that you uploaded several versions of the same photo at
Image:Sami_Rasmus_Josefsen_Utsi_Kautokeino_Finnmark_Norway_1884_Bonaparte.jpg.
It's fine to have several versions in the "File history," so there's no need to delete in this case. You also uploaded versions of several files under modified names:
Image:Sami Rasmus Josefsen Utsi Kautokeino Finnmark Norway 1884 Bonaparte.jpg became Image:Same Rasmus Josefsen Utsi Kautokeino Finnmark Norge 1884 Bonaparte.jpg, and
Image:Sea_Sami_Man_Finnmark_Norway_Ivar_Samuelsen_1864_by_Bonaparte.jpg became Image:Sjøsamisk Mann Finnmark Norge Ivar Samuelsen 1884 av Bonaparte.jpg.
You can place this template on the image description page of the versions you want to delete: correct name. Important note: "bad name" should be literally "bad name", but "correct name" should be replaced with the corrected name. For example, on the image description page for Image:Sea_Sami_Man_Finnmark_Norway_Ivar_Samuelsen_1864_by_Bonaparte.jpg, you could use

Hope this helps!. --Amble (talk) 16:20, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Alternative: Place the "duplicate" tag. See what I have done to: Image:Same Rasmus Josefsen Utsi Kautokeino Finnmark Norge 1884 Bonaparte.jpg (note that I copied the Bokmal text over to the other image too). Ingolfson (talk) 14:05, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Or is there anybody here right now who is able to convert the image? Thank you very much! -- Wolfhardt (talk) 21:00, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Do you mean SVG? PNG is not scalable. Here's Image:AMT-ataide.svg, a scalable vector version. --Amble (talk) 08:45, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for the conversion. Yes, probably I meant SVG. It's just that other coat of arms are in PNG (like Image:AMT-gatao.png) and they seem OK even if are in a smaller scale than the original size, whereas Image:AMT-ataide.gif looked horrible when its size was reduced. Thanks again for your help. -- Wolfhardt (talk) 10:25, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Problem with new upload function

Hi people - I just tried to re-upload a file that I had slightly tweaked (re-upload over an existing file - not mine, but I think the same thing would have happened). Normally, I then fill in what I did (in this case, correct a tilted horizon), writing it into the main upload description box. This then doubles as an "edit summary window" as it does NOT overwrite the actual image info and description already there. Well, now suddenly, the thing flashes red and does not allow me to proceed, giving me a warning message that I haven't provided provided data:

"You must give the original source of the file, the author of the work, and a license."

Heck that is ALL ALREADY THERE!!! So I had to upload without entering anything into that window, which it strangely enough still took (and kept the old image description). But now there is no "edit summary". Can you transfer this comment to whoever works on the uppload UI? Cheers. Ingolfson (talk) 13:56, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Problems with some images

Hi. I'm not sure if this is the right place to report my problem, so I'm sorry in advance if I should be asking somewhere else. The problem is, I've uploaded some images tonight but something must have gone wrong, since the images don't appear. Here are the links so you can see what I'm talking about: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Image:Aloha_tahiti.JPG http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Image:Farwest_portaventura.jpg

I didn't find a way to delete them (is there a way? Can the uploaders delete their images?) so I'm asking here for help... Either to have someone deleting them (or explaining me how do I do it, if I can) or solving the problem in any other way...

Thanks.

Hello, I'm afraid we're having some problems with thumbnail generation. It's a server-side problem, and there's not much we can do right now. Most of the times, it's some sort of problem with server cache. If you click on the image link, the image is still there; at some point, the thumbnails will be generated again by the software. The license if fine, but you have no label on your Y-axis. What units are used? TimVickers (talk) 22:26, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
Also, the units on the X axis should presumably be Hz, and on the Y axis, a decimal point should be a period (.) rather than a comma (,). --Amble (talk) 23:22, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
The comma as a decimal separator is common in many countries. Powers (talk) 12:34, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Yes, that's true in many countries, but as far as I'm aware, not in English (or English-language Wikipedia). The decimal separators should be consistent with the language of the title and axis labels, that's all. --Amble (talk) 16:23, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

When you upload an image, the server just puts the generated Information template (full form) or the contents of the summary field (old layout) into the edit summary. When you upload over an already existing file, put your edit summary in the "additional info" field (full form; that should be the only field that's left enabled in this case, if not, force a reload of the script: go to the upload form and do a shift-reload in Firefox, ctrl-reload in IE) or in the summary field (old layout, replacing the Information template that's there. own photos freely available

In April I edited the article about my town, and included a photo I had taken of the town, from the common, so it was trees and church and cathedral and High street with buildings mainly dating from early 1900 or before. However it has been deleted, and I would like to re-insert it, but what do I do to make sure it isn't deleted again?

You need to decide which license to use. Neither of your three images Image:St Asaph river bridge.JPG, Image:St Asaph from bank of River Elwy.JPG, Image:St Asaph from the common.JPG had a license. I'd suggest using either GFDL, or , or . If you tell us here which liense you want to use for publishing these images, we can undelete them. Not so new here but question

Is it possible to assume things are listed wrong on Flickr? The user over there cyclist_jp has uploaded a lot of very useful historical photos, clearly from contents the copyrights in Japan on these photos have expired. (example) However, the user (not knowing how to license her/his uploads?) has them all listed as copyrighted? Since they are clearly vintage whats the go to idea here? Cheers, Nesnad (talk) 08:56, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

I had an image that I uploaded "change its license" between upload and a second review of it. This is actually a violation of the CC license, if what I read here is accurate. I was not so interested in the image to pursue this, but other images that have at one time passed a review legally still retain the original approved license. If there is a record of the approval and no knowledge of a glitch in the software or trusted user who approved it, legally, the license still stands. -- carol (talk) 09:00, 28 August 2008 (UTC) This is a good answer to a different question. -- carol (talk) 09:25, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
Flickr only lets its users reserve all rights or use a Creative Commons license for their uploads. It does not have a tickbox for "this is someone else's work" or "this image is Public Domain". If you are certain that the image is PD-old, you may upload it as such, whatever the license on Flickr. If the image is tagged for Flickr review on Commons, that is an irrelevance and can be reverted (human reviewers should notice that and remove the tag and not mark for deletion).--Nilfanion (talk) 09:14, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
Oh and with regards to the image you link, I'd be hesitant to call it "PD-old". The relevant copyrighted period is life+50 (as a postcard the photographer details are probably on the reverse side - so it is not an anonymous work). I can't date the image, but without knowing the date the author died, we cannot know the copyright expiration date.--Nilfanion (talk) 09:21, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Only if you know who the photographer was and if you can show that he died more than 70 years ago. Lupo 14:21, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Quick question: how can we create a "biography" of someone that is posted on Wikimedia (which, we LOVE!)? Thanks, Mario

Who is Woody??

I have a dispute about the facts on a page for Tom Hatten an old acquaintance of 30 plus years. I re-wrote the first page a few months back most of which is intact but some info has been changed by an administrator named "Woody" who not only does NOT ID himself but somehow blocks further editing. The person who re-wrote me went from an erroneous website instead of contacting Tom at KFI LA or at KTLA. What can I do to correct it??

This is related to the English Wikipedia, not commons. Presumably about en:Tom Hatten. Regards. Woodym555 (talk) 13:46, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Contacting member Lourdes Cardenal

I am a photo researcher for school education publications. I don't understand how to contact by email member Lourdes Cardenal, who is posted in these pages. I wish to speak with her about obtaining and/or licensing images from her. How do I do this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bruno69 (talk • contribs) 06:32, August 29, 2008 (UTC)

This particular user has not enabled his/her email feature, so the best way would be to leave a message at User talk:Lourdes Cardenal, just like you did here. --rogerd (talk) 10:49, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Categories

I have noticed that there is a category called Category:Photographs by Eric Draper that contains currently 182 photos by White House photographer Eric Draper, but when you do a search for his name, it returns nearly 600 images where his name is in the text, most of which say something like "White House photograph by Eric Draper". Is there an easy way to get a list of the 400 or so of those 600 images that are not currently part of the above category so that I may add them to the category? Thanks. --rogerd (talk) 15:32, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Is this the wrong place for this type of question? If so, please point me to somewhere where I can get an answer. Thanks. --rogerd (talk) 22:09, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
Nope, it's the right place. But sometimes questions are overlooked, or nobody has an answer. I have one: try our search engine like this. It shows 415 images. Alternatively, you might want to try this Google image search, which shows 512 images. I don't know which of these two searches is more accurate. Lupo 22:31, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, that helps. I have never been good with complex searches. Once I finish Draper's images, I will then tackle the other WH photographers in Category:White House photographers. --rogerd (talk) 06:56, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

How do I delete an image?

It depends on the community where you live. See e.g. Category:Shaved genitalia --Stunteltje (talk) 21:12, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

templates

how do you make templates / sandboxes too —Preceding unsigned comment added by Baronofhell26 (talk • contribs) 10:03, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

To create a template you just enter Template:Add the name of your template here to the search box and click the red link near the top of the page. After you are at this page just edit the page as usual.

To create a user sandbox just just click here and add your test content. Anonymous101 talk 17:47, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
