Thumb doesn't support animated PNG

There is no "animated PNG" as part of the main PNG standard (which specifically excludes animation from the scope of PNG). There are MNG and APNG, but those are completely different filetypes from PNG, and would have to be requested to be added as such. If you're uploading MNG or APNG files as PNG, then you're really mislabeling them, and they don't work because they're not PNGs... AnonMoos (talk) 15:08, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

It "works in original size" because your browser understands the format. It doesn't work in thumbnails because Wikimedia resizing software doesn't understand the format, because animation is not part of the PNG standard. To fix this, you really have to either request that MNG or APNG files be added as a new filetype, or file a bug request on http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/ . bad font rendering in chemical SVGs

When saving chemical formulas as text without text converted to path, there are severe (new?) rendering issues, especially when using scaled down versions. The font is sometimes too big, other times too small, but usually pixelish. Is this already a known bug that is being worked on? Matt (talk) 21:21, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

See above on this page for complaints about inadequate font rendering which in some cases seems to change unpredicatably over time. I had to change text to paths on the simplest and most trivial SVG file File:Simple inverse relationship chart.svg in order for the text to be readable at any thumbnail size (see my comment at meta:Talk:SVG fonts)... aspect ratio in ogg video on a mac... help!

OK. So I thought I was fairly technically minded, but I can't figure this out for the life of me.... is it impossible? I have some nice HD 16:9 videos that I want to bring to Commons and Wikiepdia but when I save on my mac it always squashes the aspect ratio. The methods I've tried are simply saving as an OGG from Final Cut (doest work, it kills the aspect ratio) or saving as a MOV file and using the "Simple Theora Encoder" software to encode it to OGG (an extra step, but if it worked I would be happy... but it didn't work either.) .... This is really frustrating me guys, any easy (or heck, even not so easy!) way to fix this problem? Cheers, Nesnad (talk) 14:06, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

Really can't advise you on the technical details of working with your specific software programs, but part of it may be due to the fact that video does not always have square pixels (in fact, none of the formats encoded on standard DVDs have square pixels), while most resolution modes on modern computer monitors generally have square pixels... To respond to some of the comments (in attempt to solve this problem!) AnonMoos, square pixels, heart pixels; that was incomprehensible technobabble to me. I guess I be less technically minded than I thought. I mean, I intellectually understand the concept of square pixels but not sure how that will help me solve my problem. Thanks though. The ratio your software uses may not be the ratio it would use played from a Wikipedia. Can you upload a short example clip somewhere that's not been tampered with too much? ¦ Reisio (talk) 22:12, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

SVG font rendering

I'm pretty sure that every SVG file I've ever uploaded to Commons has had a rendering problem of some sort. Here's the latest. The default-size rendering looks more or less like I intended it, except that the text is not antialiased. At all other sizes the text is misaligned and the wrong size (200px, 1000px, 2000px), not to mention still not being antialiased, which is a problem especially at thumbnail sizes. The text is all font-family="Times" font-size="20" text-anchor="middle" stroke="none" fill="black". My questions are:

1. What text attributes will work? I tried font-family="serif" but it looks pretty bad on my machine (where serif = DejaVu Serif, which I gather is also the case on Commons). I'm starting to wonder, though, if "serif" and "sans" are the only fonts that actually function properly on Commons and the list here is just a cruel joke.
2. Is there any way to experiment myself with text attributes without cluttering the image history with a permanent record of my failures? I know I could install rsvg locally, but it's a font problem and I would have to have the same fonts installed and the same font rasterizer and so on. Could I ask an admin to delete all image versions but the last when I'm done?
3. Is Commons ever going to switch to a renderer that doesn't suck? Given that they want people to use SVG it seems like it would be a good idea. Commons is littered with badly misrendered SVG files that the authors never bothered to fix. It's embarrassing. At least they could convert all the Postscript and TTF fonts into SVG fonts; rsvg presumably wouldn't be able to screw those up.

Followup: I got the bright idea of comparing different sized renderings of File:MediaWiki SVG fonts.svg to see which fonts are well behaved. (225px 450px 900px) Most of them aren't. The non-Latin-script fonts generally did the best, presumably because they're not hinted. Can rsvg be configured to ignore hints? The DejaVu fonts don't scale well (better than Times, though). I'm currently using Nimbus Roman No9 L, which isn't great but it's better. -- BenRG (talk) 17:21, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

How to remove metadata from an image before uploading it

I would like to romove some metadata before uploading an image. How can I do this? Currently when previewing a page before saving it the metadata is not shown. It only appears when saving the page. Any suggestions? PasoAPaso PasoAPaso (talk) 18:36, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Exiv2 is useful for manipulatin metadata. If you already uploaded the image, you will need to download it, remove the metadata and upload it as a new version over the old one. Regards, -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 19:00, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Can I totally replace the old image or will it always stay in the history file?

"This file may contain malicious code"?

I recently uploaded File:Featured article collaboration.svg, but it says that "Warning: This file may contain malicious code, by executing it your system may be compromised." I'm rather puzzled by this... for one thing, it is simply a combination of two existing Wikimedia Commons SVGs with some color and size changes, but also, I've uploaded SVGs before without this problem (e.g., File:Dazzle! Beta banner.svg and File:DrilBot logo.svg). All of them were created with Adobe Illustrator CS4; I'm not an expert in SVG coding, so I can't really figure out what the problem could be. There is some Sodipodi-specific code in there → w3-validator, maybe this can cause problems with the renderer? Matt (talk) 10:22, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Converting images to two colors black and white

Sorry, for beginner question, but my graphics skills doesn't go too far from cropping :-)

I made photocopy of public domain book (example), 631 pages. I need to convert gray scale image to two color black and white PNGs. My goal is to preserve sharpness of the text, but also make embedded images as good as possible.

Original images are in RAW format.

Please give me step-by-step instructions. I have Adobe Photoshop Elements which may be useful.
