Making maps... or .png to .svg conversion

I use w:TIGER to get freely usable maps of areas and regions in the US. However, it doesn't produce very large maps so I end up stitching them together. Also it outputs raster, not vector. I'd like some pointers for further reading on how to convert .png to .svg format, or, alternatively, a good source of free vector maps... I need fairly high detail levels and I usually want water, streets, and political boundaries, as well as labels... pointers to where to read more about this gratefully accepted. For reference, some maps I've made:

Need purge??

My latest uploads at Image:Eastern Mediterranean 1450 .svg have not appeared on my pages since I uploaded them several days ago. I did try tacking "&action=purge" onto the URL and ended up with a "page not found" message. Can someone help?? MapMaster 20:55, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

I saw one upload on the 6th and two uploads on the 9th. Then I purged with this URL and nothing changed. To purge a thumbnail, please use the thumbnail purge function, substituting a bare number for WIDTHWIDTHWIDTH. Thanks!   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 23:52, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

Stroke-width limitations in Mediawiki

Can anyone tell me howcome Mediawiki will render SVG images with a stroke-width of 0.1 as though it was 1, when 0.10001 seems to work fine? Don't know if it makes a difference but the stroke-width is defined within a css style class. /Lokal_Profil 14:37, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

I cannot get you a direct answer. The help page about cvs Commons:SVG, says that if you want to preview what would be obtain whit the transformation into png, you can use the same program used for this, that is the libsrvg available at [1] or the rsvg-view to just preview the image. Depending on your Operating System these program may be available or not to you, easy to install or not. -- AnyFile 10:34, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Well actually the file differs not only but one change. Beside the stroke-width:0.1; -> stroke-width:0001; some other parameter has been changed. Among them stroke-opacity is explicitly declare to be 1. But this should actually has no effect (since it is its default value).

I cannot conclude nothing this way. I can suggest you to download the current version (14:31, 19 September 2007), edit it with a text edito and change the line number 35 do that it came back to stroke-width:0.1; and try to upload this file and see if it works. I've done that before as Image:Testar.svg (now deleted) the last upload there with width 0.1 is identical to the current Image:SWE-Map Län2007.svg except for 0.1 -> 0001. /Lokal_Profil 21:51, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Well, in that case, we can conclude that it is just nothing else than a bug of the program. But we can not conclude that every image that use stroke-width=0.1 are affected by this problem, and we can not even conclude that the problem in this image was caused by the stroke-width=0.1 (we should know the real cause of the bug to be allowed to conclude that). Badly downscaled SVG images

As a newbie to the commons and to putting SVG images up I would like some recommendations on the dragon curves I put up at Dragon_curve#Iterations (0 Order Dragon Curve - 15 Order Dragon Curve). Somehow the downscaled versions of my SVGs look really ugly in the gallery compared to Inkscape which displays them really nicely, even on a very small scale. The wiki gallery however makes the images almost disappear. What can I do to prevent this? I thought about increasing the line width, would that help? Cheers, Cerno 19:56, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

If I have understood correctly your images (I mean the full ones) are different in size, with the lower in number smaller and the bigger in number larger. Since in the gallery all the images are resized to a common size the larger the image the higher it will scaled down. So larger image (that is image with higher number)

is going to have details less visible in the resized image.

As far as I know there is no way to solve the problem in the gallery. For what concerns the images themselves, if the look fine and the line width is the correct one, then the images are correct. (of course if you can increase the line-width - that is called stroke-with in the svg jargon - this will help). The only way I can see now to display image in the Dragon_curve page is to not use the gallery system, but to interpose by hand each image specifying the correct dimension so that all the image are scaled by the same factor. -- AnyFile 10:54, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Does Commons have Redirects?

I recently posted an image named "Vap-Liq Separator.png" which is a diagram of a vapor-liquid separator. Such process vessels are also called "Flash drums". On Wikipedia, I can create a page entitled "Flash drum" and redirect it to the "Vapor-liquid separator" article. Does Commons have some similar way of redirection so that users searching for "Flash drum.png" are redirected to "Vap-Liq Separator.png"? - Mbeychok 18:45, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Yes, Commons has redirects, which are basic MediaWiki functionality. However, I believe redirects do not work for categories or images without special coding, which we do not have (and should not have in my view)... The example you gave from Wikipedia was for an article, which would work here too. One thing to consider doing to improve search results, perhaps, is to put the image in a gallery that has the other name. Hope that helps. ++Lar: t/c 19:58, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

SVG - how to change coordinates of objects

I've got problem with an image: Image:World map blank.svg. It was long ago exported from Corel and has path with coordinates below zero (whole image is starting in x=-6752). Objects could be moved using viewBox="-6752 0 13504 7697" or using transform="translate(6751.5,-7003.8546)", but either way mediawiki does not render thumbnails properly (in Inkscape, Opera and Renesis everything is ok). Is there any way to move and scale coordinates in-place ? I'm using Inkscape (but I can use other tool if required) Jacek FH 22:13, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Couldn't you just move the entire image to a new coordinate location? select everything, group it, and modify the location by hand (in the entry fields at the top) or by dragging it. I've done that in the past for images. Note that while grouped you can also resize the entire image to suit, by resize handle dragging or by the entry fields... ++Lar: t/c 15:20, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

How to fix background?

I made a hawk image with blurred round blue background. The background can be seen on SVG mode, but disappeared after converting to PNG by Commons. How to fix this problem? --

I have tried to analize codes of both images to find where is a problem but there is nothing special - same filters and gradients. The only thing different is positions and transformations. How did I create working image? I've just made in Inkscape another circle with gradient and blur based on previous one which I then removed. Nothing more. Jacek FH 12:51, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

I have seen this behaviour on other wikis with other images and I ended up not using a gradient background... I was unable to determine why it happened. (for example compare our Image:CC some rights reserved.svg with GreatLakesWiki:Image:CC some rights reserved.svg brought over from Commons and then modified to remove gradients as they were not displaying correctly on that wiki even after the version of MediaWiki was upgraded to the latest at the time... ) Any ideas would be very welcome. ++Lar: t/c 15:18, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

EPS (or PS) to SVG converter

Is there any converter available that can convert from EPS (or PS) to SVG file format. If such a tool exists, it would be easy to convert the image like Image:Aiga rightarrow.gif , since an eps image is also available form the web site cited in that page. -- AnyFile 14:58, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

After some search, I have fount this page that say that newer version of ps2toedit are able to translate directly into svg (well, using the eps2eps and ps2epsi before this transformation my be still good). Yes, I have used pstoedit compiled against GNU libplot to go directly to svg ("pstoedit -f plot-svg"). This works directly on PDF files too (it can take a -page parameter to pick out just one page). It works pretty well. I actually didn't know about the eps2eps and ps2epsi steps but it appears as though those can help as well. Carl Lindberg 04:50, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

The eps2eps call converts text to paths, and makes sure the output is an EPS file. ps2epsi seems to serve no purpose; as far as I can see, all it does is convert the EPS file to an EPSI (EPS with preview image) file. --Dapeteばか 08:15, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

The tests I did were not very enthusiastic. Calling ps2ps on a eps has as result a blank page in the ps (I do not know what happened. I tried to use pstoedit with the GNU libplot to create svg directly from the eps. The result was so and so. Te header of the sgv file was not correct (in particular the size of the image is declared to be zero). But if the starting is correct the image is then displayed correctly. However I have seen that GNU libplot is rather old: the last version of [plotutils http://directory.fsf.org/plotutils.html] was released in the 2000. The web page of skconvert (one program cited in the page en:Wikipedia:WikiProject_Electronics/How_to_draw_SVG_circuits_using_Xcircuit) seems to be newer. How to change nominal size of SVG images?

I just uploaded Image:Photon Mass Attenuation Coefficients.svg. The image showed up with heading "(SVG file, nominally 200 × 200 pixels, file size: 64 KB)". The nominal size should be much larger. How can I change it? Also can someone help me fix the colorbar - in Firefox the colorbar has a gradient change from right to left that was not in original or in inkscape rendering. Uhmmm ... if you open your svg with a text editor you will see that the svg image is defined (lines 12 and 13) to be

width="100%" height="100%"

(I actually do not where the 200 x 200 came from, this may be a default set somewhere in the mediawiki code or in some libraries used).

Try to modified these two line (line 12 and 13) into

width="600px" height="400px"

(of course put the value you need). Since there is a viewBox definition, the image should remain the same. You can edit the file by a text editor (and in this case it may be the easier and quicker way) or any editor that handle the svg format should be able to let you make this change. -- AnyFile 22:25, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Backlog on Category:Images with watermarks

Hi guys. Not sure if this is the correct place to ask attention for a 1500 image backlog, but I though it wouldn't hurt... We have almost 1.500 images in Category:Images with watermarks. • Download the image
• Remove the watermark (either by cropping or retouching - depending on the possibilities)
• Re-upload the image over the image with the watermark
• Remove {{Watermark}} from the image description page.

Many of those images (all with Template:Photo-by-Wojciechowscy-GFDL have identical, sometimes hard to remove, contact info for the photographers. I think people uploading 100's of pictures with intentional watermarks should be responsible for the cleanup. -- Jarekt 02:46, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Image:Molana Priory Ground Plan.svg

Hi, this is my very first attempt to create and upload a SVG graphic. Firefox displays it fine. However, the previews and thumbnails generated by the Wikimedia software fail. I am quite lost here why this is the case.

I've generated this SVG with xfig and hand-edited the result to adjust the bounding box and to include a comment. xfig is currently the only tool I have to generate SVGs.

If you triy to validate the image (see here) you have 3 errors in the image.

Moreover in your image you have several pattern defined that you do not use. It should be not a problem, but since they are not used and I am not sure that they are supported you can try to delete that line. -- AnyFile

I have tried to implement what I have said above, but it dis not worked, than I note (looking with a text editor) a strange thing. (for the technicians: in the path elements the path was declared by an M then a couple and then other couples. According to the specifications [2] this should be a legitimate code and a line-to command is implied before every couple except the first one). So I edited with a text editor the file inserting an L before any such couple. This seems to have worked (if you are going to check, be sure to fully reload the page or you can still see what you have in the cache). -- AnyFile 19:09, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks a million, AnyFile, I am glad to see now a working diagram. Apparently there are some problems with the generation of SVGs in xfig which is still in a beta stage. Yes the svg code generate the xfig (that if I remember correctly is the first vectorial graphics program I was able to use, around 10 year ago) is not very appealing. Anyway it is not just fault of xfig. There are some bug in the used version of the program that here convert from svg to png. -- AnyFile 12:49, 1 October 2007 (UTC)
