My first graphic

Hi ! I hope I'm at the right place for this message. I just created and uploaded my first graphic created with Inkscape. It's here : File:Eukaryote Tree of Life 2020.svg. I struggled with the text to appear correctly, but it seems it works now. In case someone has any comments, advices or remarks on things that need to be improved (either in the file itself or its description page), I would be glad to learn more! Thanks, --Tricholome (talk) 10:00, 27 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi @Tricholome: Excellent work, especially with the icons! Just a few minor comments:
  1. Some colours are very light, making the text hard to read against a white background. Perhaps darken them a bit?
  2. The font size of the radial text is also rather small. Perhaps make them a little larger?
  3. The text has been converted to paths. As the text goes along a curved path, it's difficult to keep it as text, but if having the text straight is possible, there are many advantages to keeping it as text.
Overall, it looks great – hope to see more of your graphics. Cheers, cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 16:41, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

Texts on map don't show

flowRoot etc converted to text

Hi, I just uploaed this map File:Habsburgse Nederlanden 1555.svg, but the names of the provinces don't show, even though they do show when I open them in Inkscape. What am I doing wrong? Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 16:38, 13 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi @Nederlandse Leeuw: Do you mean in the thumbnails or when the SVG file is opened in a browser? If the former, can you please ensure that they render correctly in a browser first? I don't see province names when the SVG is opened in Firefox or Chrome. Cheers, cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 21:49, 13 July 2020 (UTC)
Hi @Cmglee: , neither. The only names I see are city names and Noordzee, both in thumbnails and when opened in a browser. I think I don't understand how layers work in .SVG files, because the province names are there when I open the file in Inkscape but not outside of it. The same problem has occurred with the File:Apostasy laws in 2013.SVG map that I have just updated with an extra item in the legend on the lower left: next to the yellow square it should say 'Loss of child custody/marriage', but you only see those letters when opened in Inkscape. Btw I tried expanding the existing legend items, which *are* visible outside Inkscape, but the letters all mess up when I hit the 'Enter' key in an attempt to start a new line under the existing three items. Creating a new text object didn't solve the problem.... Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 16:01, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
Hi @Nederlandse Leeuw: it seems the Wikimedia thumbnail maker doesn't (fully) support flowRoot and associated elements (flowRoot (defined only in deprecated SVG 1.2 draft) not supported by rsvg) and Inkscape used them for the province names in your SVG. I've converted them to regular text elements and uploaded the change. You will likely have to reposition them correctly. I don't know why Inkscape made these labels flowRoot instead of text. Please start another thread here or at w:Special:NewSection/Wikipedia:SVG_help if other files have this behaviour. Good luck! cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 00:24, 19 July 2020 (UTC)
