Maximum filie size /optimum image processing[edit]

Using Photoshop CS2, I combined three large JP2 compressed images into a single image suitable for uploading on Commons. The combined PNG image is 16224px x 7651px and more than 125MB. I reduced the size to 8000px x 3775px and 32MB and when I uploaded it got an error message that it was could not be displayed because it was more than 12.5 million pixels (if I recall the number correctly). Can you recommend the best method to combine images 1, 2, and 3 from the page below?

Why not just upload as JPEG? 8000px x 3775px multiplies to 30,200,000 which is over twice the 12,500,000 limit, while the limits on JPEG are much larger... AnonMoos (talk) 17:54, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Old sepia[edit]

What would be the correct way to process heavily sepia-tinted scans of 130-year-old photographs? Someone else digitized the whole set (example - 12 megs pdf), but (IMO) the amount of tint is excessive. Options (all pics ultimately from the same digital source):

  • As-is (weak contrast)
    As-is (weak contrast)
  • As-is, stretched contrast
    As-is, stretched contrast
  • De-saturated to 20% of tint (GIMP scale, FWIW)
    De-saturated to 20% of tint (GIMP scale, FWIW)
  • Fully de-saturated
    Fully de-saturated

If you have only a JPEG source available, the safest way to greyscale (guaranteed to do the least damage) is to use the "greyscale" option of the IJG utilities. If you have a lossless TIFF etc. source, then whatever looks best, I guess... AnonMoos (talk) 19:20, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Personally I find "De-saturated to 20% of tint (GIMP scale, FWIW)" to be the most beautiful tone, but the one that does the less damage to the original image would be the best, indeed.-- Darwin Ahoy! 03:31, 12 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
