Limitation on Gif animation with GIMP ?[edit]

Hello, I meet some trouble to make animation .gif with the free software GIMP. My pics are nice, my layers are in a good quality, but when I save into .gif that become really ugly. Some friends said me that this is a GIMP issue, maybe link to an unfree compressing algorythm.
Someone know a solution [to make pretty animation with GIMP].

GIF transparency is either on or off, so you can't make a transparent image have smooth edges with GIF in most applicable cases. This seems to be your primary problem here. --Gmaxwell 23:29, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
In GIMP you just have to "flatten" the image (i.e. combine all layers with the background colour). 乙-order.gif has an opaque white background, BTW. -- ３２４７ (talk) 23:32, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hey! Yug - this is not problem with GIMP, only background - GIF doesn't support alpha channel. When you draw you image on white background it's anti-aliased with scale of gray, but when you do this on transparent anti-alias gives shade in alpha channel which is cut-off during conversion to GIF format :( --WarX 08:53, 9 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Wikiman 1m80.svg is here to help you to show the size of things, such dinosaurs, elephants, the Eiffel Tower, etc.

Hello, a "Graphic Tool"(s) category is open to put inside all files (mostly svg files) which will be useful to use, again and again, be really convenient for all the Graphists, or really pedagogic.

This may include :

  • Most uses blank maps
  • The Wikiman 1m80.svg
  • Example of map legend.
  • Color Gradients.
  • ...

Nice Idea : pics neutralization[edit]

An user have made nice and really encyclopedic image to show swimming clothes. This way is a little "70's like", but expose really clearly what is the subject. Moreover, while true pictures of women in such clothes can start editions wars, such picture will probably spread across all the wikipedia peacefully. This principle can be extended to other controversial topics such sex, cunillingus, sex possitions, etc, as seen in the image 2, and 4. Please take macro picture on white or unicolor background[edit]

Please take macro picture on white or unicolor background. Image such those ones may be cleaned up easily if you take in on uni-color background. A white A4 page is perfect in this use, you just need to put your little subject on the white A4 page.

Such clear images are more welcome on wikipedia, since they show exactly what we talk about, and only this. Moreover, such picture allow wikipedia to show really professional images, and so, to get more recognition from web readers and visitors.

Interesting choice of examples, in my experience insects are not very interested in staying put on a nice white sheet of paper, ... unless they are dead :-)

Better symbol for deleted images in galleries[edit]

Deleted or non-existent SVG-images shown in a <gallery> have the above shown icon (blue shape with bezier handles). In contrast to deleted JPG- or PNG-images which just show blank. I find both solutions non-optimal. The SVG-Icon does look like something meaningfull and can accidentaly be held for the actual picture. The empty images could result from a load error or sever cache problem. I would rather prefer to see a clear symbol like a diagonal red bar or a text in several languages that says "image deleted". My question is now how can we change this and who can do it? I suppose it must be done by an admin? -- Dr. Schorsch 07:09, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Within Temptation by AccidentAndEmergency.jpg[edit]

Uneditted version: [1] Technically this is a very bad image. However it's quite valuable, as it is currently the only full band picture we have from Within Temptation. What can be done to improve it? I already slightly cropped it; dimmed a light and removed a head. I also tried blurring the background [2] to put more emphasis on the main subject, but it did not turn out that well. Standardized encyclopedic view for Dinos (and animals)[edit]

Hello, it may be need, possible, and interesting to set up a clear protocol to answer to « how show dinos in images to be fully encyclopedic ? ». Dozens of images lack of colors, others lack of "something showing the size", other are in non-encyclopedic view (view is not from the side).
Someone may him merge all this ideas and images aboves to show the good way ?
set up a clear protocol may be usefull too.

Beta protocol :

  1. View : show the dino's left side (with this it will look the article text)
  2. Data : size (meters), height (meters), and masse (kgs or tons) it welcome
  3. Comparative : the blue Wikiman is need, or its hand for tinies dinos. A vertical stick black-white-black-... is welcome.
  4. ... other ideas ?

Thumbnail problems...[edit]

I've tried in two different browsers on my machine, and in neither am I able to see thumnails of images uploaded less than about 2 days ago. Where images have had newer versions uploaded, I see the older versions. Is there currently a problem server-side? Or is my machine/local net borked? Problems with some SVGs[edit]

I am having issues with some of my SVGs not appearing on the page: Category:Alkyl halides. They are there if you click all the way down, but the thumbnail doesn't show up, but only in some cases. These SVGs were all created in Adobe Illustrator. Armtuk 23:10, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What font do SVGs use?[edit]

I often have to tweak text positioning because of font issues. What font does the SVG renderer use, so I can use that when making the SVG? --NE2 23:40, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

From what I can tell, there are a couple of fonts available serverside. Based on guesswork and empirical observation Times New Roman is replaced with FreeSerif, Arial (and presumabl Helvetic) is replaced with FreeSans (and presumably Courier New is replaced with FreeMono, but haven't tested that one). Bitstream Vera Sans is available (and is used by many - personally I think it's ugly for screen use). Obviously FreeSerif, FreeSans and FreeMono would then render to themselves.
