Wanted: Recommendation for (preferably free) video editing software to make 30 fps videos from large set of JPGs or PNGs

Article(s): Global warming etc.

Request
  • Background: I want to make a ≥4-second video or GIF from a set of JPG or PNG images, with each image having a 1/30th second frame duration (30 fps, with ≥120 frames total, from probably 1600x1200px JPGs/PNGs). (Unfortunately iMovie has a minimum 0.10 second per image (10 fps), which makes the video choppy.)
  • Request: Please recommend a preferably-free but reputable video editing program for Mac desktop MacOS ≥10.11(long story) preferably based on your personal experience. Not looking for bells & whistles. Ideas: List of video editing software. Thanks in advance. --RCraig09 (talk) 04:13, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

  • I've gone with Shotcut, which lets individual JPGs/PNGs occupy individual frames. The user interface brought me a few problems along the way, but the software let me get the job done (eventually). —RCraig09 (talk) 06:04, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

How to control thumbnail for videos

Article(s): [[]]

Requesting explanation/advice
I started my webm video with a single frame that I had assumed would constitute the clickable 'thumbnail' of the video. However, the thumbnail was an image somewhere in the first five seconds of the video (past the first frame). How can I control the thumbnail? —RCraig09 (talk) 19:53, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s)
RCraig09, just use the |thumbtime=, like so: [[File:20200320 ~140 and ~2000 year global average temperature charts (full speed).webm|thumb|thumbtime=9]]
That way, you can remove the first out of context frame and specify the thumb you want in seconds (or h:mm:ss, mm:ss, etc). Huntster (t @ c) 21:08, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
Profuse gratitude to User:Huntster, . . . . . thumbtime=0 did the trick, setting first frame as thumbnail. —RCraig09 (talk) 00:46, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

Recompile animated astronomy image

Request
I'm interested in recompiling this image from an original file (see https://jasonwang.space/orbits.html, specifically https://jasonwang.space/images/movies/hr8799_orbit_hd.gif ... warning, large gif), obviously cropping the border and reducing size to fall below the 100MP threshold for thumbnail animation. You'll notice our file was later edited to remove the credits (which I don't necessarily agree with, but whatever), and the quality was dramatically diminished. I've been unable to find a method to do all of this myself...animated gifs are hard. If someone would be willing to give this a go, and teach me along the way, it would be appreciated. Huntster (t @ c) 01:51, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s)
@Huntster: how does File:Hr8799 orbit hd.gif look? I used gifsicle to crop the borders out (--crop 60,60+-60x-60) and scale the frame size down to 1000 x 1000 pixels (--resize-fit 1000x1000), which puts it right on the 100MP threshold (1000 x 1000 = 1MP frame size x 100 frames = 100MP; it's actually a little less than that, since some frames are smaller than 1000 x 1000 due to optimization). There's still a drop in quality compared to the original, but I think it looks better than the existing GIF. I can share the full command I used to generate the new GIF, if desired. I don't have much experience with gifsicle, but it looks it has a lot of features to make working with animated GIFs easier. clpo13(talk) 20:38, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
Clpo13, oh my, job well done, thank you for taking this on. It looks so much better. Yes, I'd appreciate the full code...I'd like to eventually convert the other planetary systems for upload. Huntster (t @ c) 23:20, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
@Huntster: no problem! The full command I used for this GIF is gifsicle -U --crop 60,60+-60x-60 --resize-fit 1000x1000 -i -O3 -j4 input.gif -o output.gif. You can also use gifsicle to extract a single frame, which you can open up in an image editor to determine how many pixels wide the border is for the crop flag: gifsicle input.gif '#0' -o input0.gif. clpo13(talk) 16:32, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
Clpo13, outstanding! Thank you again. Huntster (t @ c) 04:11, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

Article(s): en:Dither#Examples

Request
The article contains a 16-bit sine wave and a 6-bit non-dithered one, but no 6-bit dithered version (which is kind of the point of the article). Note that a third field is already present in the article's source code, but missing the filename argument. --Sobsz (talk) 22:33, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

Simple editing

I've lately been shooting a little bit of video with my DSLR. Some of it works out great -- e.g. File:Squirrel in tree eating an apple.webm -- but I'm shooting hand-held, so unsurprisingly a lot of it could use some editing.

I'm working on a 10-year-old laptop with only 4GB of RAM, and it seems like video editing tools need more. I tried OpenShot, but it locks up, especially when trying to save. Basically, no successful saves.

It would probably be enough just to have something that would let me just cut and splice. Is there anything lightweight someone can recommend? Jmabel ! talk 20:21, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

Here's the one I'd like to fix. I messed up just before the 4-second mark, but nothing before that is terribly important. I'd like to just sacrifice the first 4 seconds or so and keep the rest. - Jmabel ! talk 23:32, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

Trimming video

Article(s): en:Football chant and possibly Chelsea F.C.-related articles

Request
Trim 10 seconds from both the start of the video and end of video
I'm interested in using the video as illustration of football chants, but want to trim the obtrusive profanity at the start and the part without chanting the end. I tried doing it myself but the result looked odd and I'm not sure why. Also no one appears to be reviewing video uploads for months now. Hzh (talk) 13:13, 2 August 2020 (UTC)

Plug-In for 360° Videos

hi,

there is a tool to display 360° images properly. i‘ve made use of this plug-in often. however, there seems to be no tool for visualizing 360° videos. here‘s an example from yesterday:

File:Deutschlandfunk_und_Deutsche_Welle_Köln_Rückbau_–_360°_Panorama_aus_der_Luft_–_Oktober_2020.jpg

Use the 360°-link to visualize it.

Any idea about a plug-in for 360° videon and webm? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maximilian Schönherr (talk • contribs) 19:51, 1 November 2020‎ (UTC)

@Maximilian Schönherr: There isn't a Wikimedia player for spherical video at the moment. There may be desktop players or other websites you can use, but I haven't tried them. The feature request for native spherical video support is at phab:T150624. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 02:02, 2 November 2020 (UTC)

The Adventures of Paddy the Pelican episodes

Please fix these encodes of the Paddy the Pelican episodes to look more like the originals, by removing the transparent watermarks on the top right corner. As the watermarks are transparent I suppose it should be possible. Thanks! PseudoSkull (talk) 09:09, 12 December 2020 (UTC)

Trimming creators' marks from video

Article(s): en:Burpee (exercise)

Request
I'm interested in using these two videos in the Burpee article, but some editors objected to the presence of the creators' names in the videos, maybe for the similar reason as with Commons:Watermarks. Therefore for the first video (CrossFit Burpee.webm) can someone trimmed the first 8 seconds off from the video, and for the second video (Burpee How To.webm) trimmed the last three seconds? The videos may be saved as separate files if that is considered appropriate. -Hzh (talk) 19:00, 26 December 2020 (UTC)

Please strip the audio, as it is probably unoriginal to the film and probably copyrighted. Requesting @Racconish: PseudoSkull (talk) 03:38, 27 December 2020 (UTC)

Please cut the ending tag off. I tried with youtube-dl with --postprocessor-args but as is apparent now, that did not work. Requesting @Racconish: PseudoSkull (talk) 13:17, 27 December 2020 (UTC)

Roi

Article(s): articles require pronunciation of "roi" in French

Request
This should not be saying "le roi", because that is misleading. It should be clipped to just say "roi". The current sound clip in the file should be placed in a different file for "le roi" (say File:fr-le_roi.ogg or somesuch)
