Shah Safi I of Persia (reg. 1629-42) on horseback carrying a mace. North India, 18th/19th Century. gouache and gold on paper, gold and brown borders, inscribed in cursive script, inscribed verso Shaw Suffee, King of Persia. Provenance: Scottish private collection. The inscription reads: shabih-e bandagannavvab-e aqda shah safidara-ye iran, 'Portrait of His Majesty, the most pure Shah Safi King of Iran'.
