Highlight of the year 2017: Commons Photographers User Group meeting during Wikimania in Montréal

2017 was the first year for the Commons Photographers User Group. While they were waiting for the result of the official confirmation process, Commons photographers Raimond Spekking, Ansgar Koreng, and Frank Schulenburg met in Berlin on March 31, took photos, and discussed the future of the user group. Some of the pictures taken that evening later achieved quality image status. Shortly thereafter, in April 2017, the user group was officially confirmed by the Wikimedia Foundation’s Affiliation Committee.

A first larger gathering of user group members happened during Wikimania in Montréal, Canada. About 16 Wikimedians came together on August 12th, listened to a couple of photography-related presentations held by user group members, and discussed future activities of the group. The main outcome of this in-person meeting was the decision to prepare a larger user group meeting in 2018. Some group members said they’d love to meet in Iceland, given the fact that the country provides plenty of attractive photo opportunities.

Over the course of the calendar year 2017, a total of 67 members joined the user group.
