Discussion

I did some apparent uncontroversial edits to com:regex since the bot started in 2013. Most changes were in fact uncontroversial but one of the more recent ones named "source cleanup" (1) got some negative feedback. Thus, I initiated a poll at the VP which has a result of 7   and 3  . Moreover, some users wanted the information to be more prominent than deleted or hidden in the page text in a comment.

It appears the majority would accept a trade-off to transform the information into a category:

New users and re-users would not be confused with uploader/source/author
Advanced users and bot/tool writers can still fetch the uploader's name without having to crawl the page text or page history

A sample diff showing the mentioned trade-off: diff. --McZusatz (talk) 18:54, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
"Uploaded […]" categories are meta categories (≠ {{Metacat}}) and as such must be hidden, which they can't if they're not created.    FDMS  4    20:15, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Which raises the question if they should be put in Category:Files by uploader or Category:User categories which is in category:Image sources‎ which is in category:Images by source‎. But the uploader is not the source which is the whole point the bot tries to clean up. So maybe some subcategories from Category:User categories should be put into Category:Files by uploader instead. --McZusatz (talk) 09:43, 27 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@McZusatz: Can you estimate how many files are affected by the intended task? Technically the task looks reasonable to me, but as feedback here is quite limited it might be a good idea this to a broader audience first. --Krd 04:58, 5 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Several 100k files are affected. Broader audience: Commons:Village_pump#YaCBot_consensus. --McZusatz (talk) 13:00, 5 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but why does uploader information matter? --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:57, 5 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It does not matter. There was "consesus" to present this information more visible than "hidden in a comment". --McZusatz (talk) 15:07, 5 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's fine, except why name the category "Uploaded by user Magnus Manske" instead of just "Uploaded by Magnus Manske"? "User" is implied by them uploading stuff. --ghouston (talk) 22:52, 5 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
To avoid naming conflicts. There are already plenty of "Uploaded by $some_name" categories and the bot can't check if $some_name is supposed to be a valid wiki* user name. --McZusatz (talk) 08:44, 6 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@McZusatz: As there is no objection so far, please go ahead and give it a slow start. If nothing new arises shortly, we can close this as approved in a few days. --Krd 07:20, 8 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Some users decide to opt out: diff. Imo, it is their right to do this and I won't force them to opt-in. --McZusatz (talk) 15:35, 11 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Approved. --Krd 09:32, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
