Discussion

  • Short explanation. I've run AWB under my username more than a few times. Basically I setup a bot and am requesting the bot flag so I don't have to sit there clicking "save" 600 times. --ShakataGaNai Talk 22:46, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Could you be more specific than "misc batch work"? --O (висчвын) 23:00, 11 June 2008 (GMT)
    • Well the last couple of times I've run big batches it has been to fix my own photo's. But I'd like to take the "show on the road" and help with moving images during category renames, or during other tag changes. --ShakataGaNai Talk 23:02, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
      • Your "cat and licence" runs include revoking your previous licences and replacing them ([1] [2] [3] [4]), which isn't allowed. You may add additional licences, but not revoke any. Category additions and removals look fine. --O (висчвын) 23:14, 11 June 2008 (GMT)
        • Huh. Well I meant to upgrade all my images from cc-by-sa to cc-by-sa-3.0. I did not realize I had mistakenly put some down as cc-by. I will endeavor to fix this (unrelated to the bot). Thanks. --ShakataGaNai Talk 23:19, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
        • You can update a license, but you are right that you cannot "revoke any". (You can only make something more free, not less free and this is not technically against policy, it's just if someone finds that it was released under a different license they can use that too... but this is really getting into nit-picking. ;-)) However, it probably doesn't matter anyway because Shakata is not gonna whine if someone tries to use cc-by-sa. • Initial question remains, I think. Why need a bot bit? So far you have not used the account. Start using it. As soon as you start making more edits than RC can handle, and on a regular basis, you probably need it. In general we have no issue with assisted processing without a bot flag. Cheers! • Well the reason I haven't used the account is that it serves no purpose w/o the bot flag. I can run AWB under my account right now - and have. Oh well, I'll fix things the slow way. --ShakataGaNai Talk 18:26, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • How about we just poll to add him to Commons:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage#Bots instead of giving him a bot flag? Cbrown1023 talk 01:30, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • I (personally) don't see the point in not bot-flagging if we give it AWB permission. giggy (:O) 02:22, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • I had assumed that to be an AWB bot it needed the actual bot flag. I see now that I was wrong. So "ShakataBot" doesn't need the bot flag and we can close this RFF. Thank you Cbrown1023 --ShakataGaNai Talk 02:23, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
      • Well, no, it doesn't need the bot flag, but if it's going to flood RC (by editing fast) then it probably should get one. In any case, this shouldn't be closed if there is discussion taking place about the actions you intend to make. giggy (:O) 02:30, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
        • There really isn't much talk interms of what edits I will be making. How about this: Unless someone has comments - close this RFF and I'll go get what I actually need and use the bot as I intend to for a while - see what I actually end up using it for. If I am indeed making a flood of edits - we can come back and talk about it again. I just don't want to drag this out and bore people since it seems it was a mistake (or at least premature) for me to open this RFF. --ShakataGaNai Talk 02:40, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
          • Add your bot to the list. Auto-save slower than you could manually. Wait for the flag. There's is a point in using a separate account even if it's not flagged. People will see "Bot" in the name and know it's (semi)automatic. It's a way to make trial runs for others to see if a flag is needed. Rocket000 (talk) 07:59, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've relisted my bot. 2 major reasons. #1 - It seems that once every few days someone has asked for something. Last time it was a license run (which Giggy was kind enough to grant me flag temporarily so I could help the user). #2 - I'm helping Rocket doing template subst's for archives. I'm running the bot "slow" right now since it doesn't have the flag - but there is only so slow I can run it and get over 1000 pages done. --ShakataGaNai Talk 08:03, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
